A Dog's Purpose Is Strange Magic Chapter 40

Bailey is grateful for the Headmaster's interference when it comes to the Mirror of Erised. It made her very uneasy. Just to be on the safe side as a precautionary measure Bailey would sit on his trunk each time it appears like he's about to take out the Invisibility Cloak for a stroll. She didn't want to risk it in case the object hadn't been moved as of yet. That doesn't mean her job is complete. As a result of that encounter for the remainder of the Christmas holiday, Harry was tossing and turning in his bed from nightmares. The only thing to somewhat calm them is her presence snuggled beside him on the bed. That was all she could do.

Fortunately, Harry's mind is soon removed to other things. Like returning to researching about this mysterious Nicholas Flamel and honing his Quidditch skills in training.

Watching Harry improve more and more under an actual teams guidance made her proud and is a lot of fun, but getting drenched in rain would hit them from time to time not as much.

Finally, when it came to Nicholas Flamel there was a breakthrough right before the next Quidditch game between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff. Information on Nicholas Flamel is actually on the back of a Chocolate Frog Card. That's when Hermione recognizes the name and retrieves a book she'd checked out from the library weeks ago. Turns out he's an ancient wizard who's been able to prolong his life with an elixir created by what's called the Sorcerer's Stone. It can turn anything into pure gold, but most of all with the Elixir of Life it can make a person immortal as long as they drink it at intervals. It's easy to conclude this is what Fluffy is guarding and why someone would want it so badly.

The big day comes for the Quidditch match. Bailey is secure in the stands with Ron, Hermione, and Neville for the match. The match went on well even with Snape acting as referee for its duration. But as much as Bailey would've preferred to have kept a sharp eye on her boy's progress, she finds herself distracted. Malfoy and his cronies made their way over to where the four of them were in the stands and stirred up trouble. With Malfoy making jabs at Ron's family until he finally snaps when the former takes things too far. Hermione is wise enough to stay out of the conflict while Bailey leaps in to assist the other two Gryffindors. Honestly, Goyle is probably going to be facing a ton of ridicule from the student body for having a huge hole in his pants after the Quidditch match reaches its conclusion, courtesy of a proud red retriever.

Afterwards, Bailey naturally assumes that they'd reunite with Harry right away once he exits the locker rooms to join the celebration in Gryffindor Tower. Instead, no one sees him until much later. Harry explains the reason behind his absence, shedding light on a secret encounter between Quirrell and Snape he happened to spy on after following the latter into the forest while riding his Nimbus Two Thousand. Luckily he hadn't been spotted otherwise he'd be facing a lot more than simply scrubbing cauldrons for a month.

"So we were right, it is the Sorcerer's Stone, and Snape's trying to force Quirrell to help him get it. He asked if he knew how to get past Fluffy. And he said something about Quirrell's 'hocus-pocus'. I reckon other things are guarding the stone apart from Fluffy, loads of enchantments, probably, and Quirrell would have done some anti-Dark Arts spell that Snape needs to break through-," suspects Harry.

"So you mean the Stone's only safe as long as Quirrell stands up to Snape," exclaimed Hermione in obvious alarm.

"It'll be gone by next Tuesday," said Ron, flopping down into a neighboring armchair.
