The barracks were eerily quiet again that night. Sasha had been taken to the infirmary, her condition stable but critical. The cadets who had witnessed the day's events were subdued, their usual camaraderie replaced by an uncomfortable tension. The reality of their situation had become starkly clear: no one was safe, not even in training.
Eren sat alone on his bunk, staring at his hands. They were still trembling slightly from the adrenaline of the day's battle. He couldn't shake the image of Sasha being caught in that Titan's jaws, the helplessness he had felt as he watched it happen. If she didn't survive, it would be his fault. His decision had led them into that trap.
Mikasa and Armin sat across from him, their eyes filled with concern, but Eren couldn't bring himself to meet their gaze. He felt like a failure, like he had let them all down. The weight of his responsibilities pressed down on him, heavier than ever before.
"I can't do this," Eren muttered under his breath, more to himself than to his friends. The words hung in the air, a painful admission of the doubt that had been festering inside him for days.
Armin frowned, leaning forward. "Eren, you're not alone in this. We're all fighting together. What happened to Sasha… it wasn't your fault. We're facing Titans, not humans. They're unpredictable. We're still learning."
Eren shook his head. "But I'm supposed to be better than this. I'm supposed to be a leader. How can I lead when I can't even protect the people I care about?"
Mikasa, always the calm and supportive one, reached out and placed a hand on Eren's arm. "You did everything you could. No one blames you, Eren. We all know the risks."
Eren wanted to believe her, but the guilt was like a knife in his gut, twisting with every breath. He had fought so hard, trained so relentlessly to be strong enough to protect everyone, but it never seemed to be enough. Every victory felt like a hollow achievement, overshadowed by the losses that came with it.
"I thought if I got stronger, if I fought harder, I could save everyone," Eren whispered, his voice laced with frustration. "But no matter how much I push myself, someone always gets hurt."
Armin sighed softly. "We can't save everyone, Eren. That's the harsh truth of this world. But we can keep fighting for those who are still with us. That's what matters."
Eren clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white. He knew Armin was right, but it didn't make the guilt any easier to bear. How could he keep going, knowing that every decision he made could lead to more suffering, more loss?
"Eren," Mikasa said gently, her voice soft but firm. "You've always been the one who pushes forward, no matter how hard things get. Don't lose that part of yourself. We believe in you."
Eren looked up at her, seeing the sincerity in her eyes. Mikasa had always been his protector, his unwavering support, even when he didn't deserve it. But now, more than ever, he felt like he was failing her, failing all of them.
"I don't know if I can keep doing this," Eren admitted, his voice cracking with emotion. "What if next time, it's one of you? What if I lose you?"
Mikasa's expression softened, and she squeezed his arm reassuringly. "You won't lose us, Eren. We'll fight together, no matter what. That's a promise."
Armin nodded in agreement, his eyes filled with determination. "We've been through too much to give up now. We'll get stronger, just like we always have. And we'll survive this, together."
Eren wanted to believe them, to hold on to the hope that they could all make it through this nightmare. But the fear of losing them, the fear of failing them, was a shadow that refused to lift.
That night, sleep eluded him once again. His mind replayed the events of the day over and over, each memory sharper and more painful than the last. The darkness seemed to close in around him, suffocating him with doubt and fear.
The next morning, Eren's exhaustion was evident in the dark circles under his eyes, the stiffness in his movements. But he pushed through it, determined to keep up with the day's training. He couldn't afford to show weakness. Not now.
The cadets gathered on the training grounds, their faces serious as they prepared for another day of exercises. Instructor Shadis stood before them, his usual stern demeanor in place as he addressed the group.
"Yesterday was a wake-up call for many of you," Shadis began, his voice booming across the field. "The Titans won't show you any mercy, and neither will I. Today's training will push you even harder. I expect nothing less than your absolute best."
Eren glanced at his squad—Mikasa, Armin, Connie, and Sasha's empty spot. The weight in his chest grew heavier. He couldn't let them down again. He had to be stronger, better, for all of them.
As the exercise began, Eren threw himself into the training with a renewed sense of urgency. He pushed his ODM gear to its limits, maneuvering through the trees with blinding speed. His blades flashed as he struck down the training dummies, each movement precise and deadly.
But no matter how hard he fought, no matter how many targets he hit, the nagging doubt remained. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Sasha's face, heard her scream. He couldn't shake the feeling that it was only a matter of time before something worse happened.
"Eren, slow down!" Armin called out from behind him, struggling to keep up with Eren's frantic pace.
But Eren couldn't slow down. He couldn't afford to. The fear of losing someone else was driving him forward, pushing him to fight harder, faster. He couldn't stop, couldn't let up, or everything would fall apart.
"Eren!" Mikasa's voice cut through the noise, sharp with concern. "You're pushing too hard. You need to pace yourself."
Eren ignored her, his focus narrowing to the next target in front of him. He had to keep going. He had to—
Suddenly, his ODM gear malfunctioned, one of the hooks misfiring and sending him off course. Eren's body slammed into a tree, the impact knocking the wind out of him as he crashed to the ground. Pain shot through his shoulder, and he gasped for breath, his vision swimming.
"Eren!" Mikasa and Armin were at his side in an instant, their faces filled with worry.
Eren groaned, trying to push himself up, but the pain in his shoulder made him wince. He had pushed too hard, lost control. Now he was paying the price.
"Stay still," Mikasa said, her voice firm as she gently pressed him back down. "You're hurt."
Eren clenched his teeth, frustration boiling inside him. He had been so determined to prove himself, to make up for his mistakes, and now he had failed again. He had let his emotions get the better of him, and it had cost him.
Armin knelt beside him, his expression filled with concern. "Eren, you don't have to do this alone. We're here to help you. You need to take care of yourself too."
Eren closed his eyes, feeling the weight of their words sink in. They were right. He had been so focused on trying to protect everyone else that he had forgotten to take care of himself. But the fear, the guilt—it was overwhelming.
"I just… I don't want to lose anyone," Eren whispered, his voice filled with pain. "I can't lose you."
Mikasa's hand rested on his uninjured shoulder, her touch gentle but grounding. "You won't. We'll survive this together, Eren. But you have to trust us too."
Eren opened his eyes, meeting Mikasa's steady gaze. He could see the worry in her eyes, the fear that she was trying to hide. She was just as scared of losing him as he was of losing her.
"I'll try," Eren said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper. "I'll try to be stronger."
Mikasa nodded, her expression softening. "That's all we ask."
As the medics arrived to tend to Eren's injury, he let himself relax, if only for a moment. The weight of responsibility was still there, but for the first time, he realized that he didn't have to carry it alone.
His friends were with him, fighting beside him. And maybe, just maybe, that would be enough to keep them all alive.
