Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton were enjoying a quiet evening on their couch, the room dimly lit and the atmosphere relaxed. Suddenly, a loud knock echoed through the apartment.
Jay glanced towards the door, puzzled. "Who could that be at this hour?"
Hailey sighed as she got up. "I have no idea. I'll check."
She walked to the door and opened it, revealing her father. He was visibly drunk, swaying slightly with bloodshot eyes and reeking of alcohol.
"Hailey Anne Upton! Where have you been hiding?" he slurred loudly.
Hailey was shocked but tried to keep her composure. "Dad, what are you doing here?"
Jay stood up, concerned. "Is everything okay?"
Ignoring Jay, her father stumbled forward. "I need to talk to my daughter. Now!"
Hailey stepped in front of him, trying to calm him down. "Dad, you're drunk. Let's get you home."
"I don't need to go home! I need to talk to you!" he shouted, raising his voice.
Jay stepped forward, placing a supportive hand on Hailey's shoulder. "Sir, let's take this outside. We don't want to disturb the neighbors."
Hailey nodded, looking at Jay gratefully. "Come on, Dad. Let's go."
Hailey and her dad were arguing loudly on the quiet street outside Jay and Hailey's apartment. The distant hum of traffic was the only other sound.
"Dad, you need to go home. You're not thinking straight," Hailey said, frustration evident in her voice.
"Don't tell me what to do, Hailey Anne!" her dad slurred angrily.
In a sudden burst of anger, Hailey's dad pushed her to the ground and slapped her.
Hailey fell, shocked and hurt. Jay rushed forward, his face a mix of anger and concern.
"Hey! That's enough!" Jay yelled.
He quickly cuffed Hailey's dad and pushed him down, ensuring he couldn't hurt anyone else.
Then he turned his attention to Hailey, who was trembling and starting to panic.
"Hails, it's okay. I've got you," Jay said softly, kneeling beside her.
He helped her up gently and guided her back into the apartment. Hailey was crying, her breaths coming in short, panicked gasps.
Inside the apartment, Jay sat Hailey down on the couch, holding her hands to steady her.
"Let's get you to Med, you gotta get checked out," Jay said soothingly.
Hailey shook her head, still sobbing.
"No, I can't…"
"What if I called Will to meet us there? He'll take care of you," Jay suggested gently, using a pet name for her.
Hailey looked at Jay, her eyes filled with tears, but she nodded slightly, trusting him.
"Okay, let's go. You're safe now," Jay reassured her.
Jay and Hailey walked into the bustling emergency department of Chicago Med. Jay had his arm around Hailey, guiding her gently. Hailey was still visibly shaken, her eyes red from crying.
"We're almost there, Hails. Just a little bit longer," Jay said softly.
They approached the reception desk, where a nurse looked up and immediately recognized them.
"Detective Halstead, Detective Upton, what happened?" the nurse asked, concerned.
"We need to see Dr. Will Halstead. It's urgent," Jay replied firmly but gently.
The nurse nodded and quickly made a call.
Within moments, Will Halstead appeared, his expression shifting from professional to worried as he saw his brother and Hailey.
"Jay, Hailey, what happened?" Will asked, rushing over.
"She needs to be checked out, Will. She had a rough night," Jay said, holding Hailey close.
Will nodded, his face serious as he led them to a private room. Jay helped Hailey onto the bed, staying close by her side.
"Hailey, I'm going to take care of you, okay? You're safe here," Will said gently.
Hailey nodded, her breathing still uneven. Jay held her hand, his eyes never leaving her face.
"You're going to be okay, Hails. I'm right here," Jay said softly to Hailey.
Will Halstead checked Hailey over, his expression serious and focused. Hailey sat on the examination bed, trembling slightly.
"Hailey, I need to check for any injuries under your shirt and on your legs. Is that okay?" Will asked gently.
Hailey hesitated, her hands shaking. She looked at Jay, her eyes filled with fear and uncertainty.
"I… I don't know if I can…" she whispered.
"It's okay, Hails. I'm right here. We'll do this together," Jay said softly, holding her hand.
Jay helped Hailey lift her shirt slightly, revealing bruises and gravel embedded in her skin. Hailey winced, tears streaming down her face.
"I'm going to clean these wounds, Hailey. It might sting a bit, but I'll be as gentle as I can," Will said carefully.
Hailey nodded, her body trembling. Jay stayed close, his presence a comforting anchor.
"You're doing great, Hails. Just a little more," Jay soothed.
Will continued to clean the wounds, his touch gentle but efficient. Hailey's breathing was ragged, and she started to panic again.
"I can't… I can't do this…" Hailey panicked.
"Look at me, Hails. Focus on me. You're safe. You're strong. We've got this," Jay said firmly but gently.
Hailey locked eyes with Jay, his calm and steady gaze helping to ground her. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself.
"Just a bit more, Hailey. You're doing great," Will said, almost done.
Finally, Will finished cleaning the wounds and bandaged them carefully. Hailey was exhausted, her body trembling from the ordeal.
"Let's get you home, Hails. You need to rest," Jay said softly, brushing her hair back.
"Thank you, Jay… Will…" Hailey said weakly.
"Anytime, Hailey. Take care of yourself," Will replied, smiling gently.
Jay helped Hailey off the bed, wrapping his arm around her protectively.
Jay and Hailey lay in bed, the room dimly lit, creating a calm and intimate atmosphere. Jay was shirtless, wearing only his boxers, as he always did. Hailey was curled up next to him, her head resting on his chest.
"Jay, do you have your gun?" Hailey asked softly, her voice trembling.
Jay tightened his arm around her, his voice gentle and reassuring.
"Yeah, Hail. It's right here. You're safe with me."
Hailey nodded, her body still tense but starting to relax slightly. She took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart.
"I just… I can't stop thinking about what happened," she whispered.
"I know. But you're safe now. I'm not going to let anything happen to you," Jay said, kissing the top of her head.
Hailey looked up at Jay, her eyes filled with gratitude and trust.
"Thank you, Jay. For everything."
"Always, Hails. Now try to get some rest. I'll be right here," Jay replied, smiling gently.
Jay was fast asleep, his breathing deep and steady, but Hailey was restless. Suddenly, she heard a noise from outside the bedroom, causing her to sit up quickly, her heart racing.
"Jay… Jay, wake up," Hailey whispered, shaking him gently.
Jay stirred, half-asleep, and rolled over to face her, his eyes barely open.
"Hails? What's wrong?" he mumbled.
"I heard something. Can you check?" Hailey whispered anxiously.
Jay blinked a few times, trying to wake up fully. He sat up slowly, rubbing his eyes.
"Okay, okay. I'll check it out," he said softly, reassuring her.
He got out of bed, grabbing his gun from the nightstand. Moving quietly towards the bedroom door, his senses were on high alert. Hailey watched him, her anxiety palpable.
"Stay here. I'll be right back," Jay whispered, turning back to her.
Hailey nodded, clutching the blanket tightly. Jay stepped out of the bedroom, moving cautiously through the apartment.
After a few tense moments, he returned, his expression calm.
"It's all clear, Hails. Just some noise from outside," Jay said softly, putting the gun back.
Hailey exhaled, her body relaxing slightly. Jay climbed back into bed, wrapping his arms around her.
"You're safe. Try to get some sleep," he soothed
