Hailey Halstead sat in the jury box, her mind divided between the case at hand and thoughts of her husband, Jay. She fidgeted slightly, glancing at the clock. When the judge called for a recess, Hailey seized the opportunity to approach the bench.

"Your Honor, I just wanted to clarify a point about the evidence presented earlier…" she began, but was interrupted by the urgent crackle of her police radio.

"Detective down! Repeat, detective down!"

Hailey's heart stopped. She and Jay were the only detectives on duty today. Panic surged through her as she looked at the judge.

"Your Honor, I need to leave. That call… it could be my husband."

"Go, Mrs. Halstead. We'll manage here," the judge replied.

Hailey nodded gratefully and bolted out of the courtroom. She ran to her truck, fumbling with her phone to pull up the police radio app. Officer Burgess's tense voice came through.

"Hailey, it's Jay. He's been shot. We're at the corner of 5th and Main."

Hailey's face paled. She slammed the truck into gear and sped off, her mind racing.

When she arrived at Chicago Med, her truck screeched to a halt outside the emergency entrance.

She jumped out and ran towards the hospital, her eyes scanning for any sign of Jay.

She spotted Ambulance 61, its doors wide open.

Inside, Jay lay on a stretcher, covered in blood. Paramedic Sylvie Brett was applying pressure to a wound in his lower abdomen.

"We have a male, mid-30s, gunshot wound to the lower abdomen. He's lost a lot of blood. BP is 90 over 60, heart rate 120. We need to get him inside, now!" Brett called out.

Dr. Connor Rhodes rushed over, assessing the situation quickly.

"Get him to Trauma Room 1. Let's move!"

Hailey followed them into the ER, her heart pounding. The medical team swarmed around Jay, working frantically.

Hailey stood frozen, watching as they wheeled him away. The unit members noticed her and rushed over.

"Hailey, he's in good hands. They're doing everything they can," Burgess reassured her.

Hailey's vision blurred, her breathing became rapid and shallow. She felt the room spinning and then everything went black.

Moments later, Hailey lay on a gurney, slowly regaining consciousness. The unit members were around her, concern etched on their faces.

"Hailey, can you hear me?" Burgess asked.

Hailey blinked, trying to focus.

"Jay… is he…"

"He's in surgery. They're doing everything they can. Just try to stay calm," Burgess said.

Hailey nodded weakly, tears streaming down her face.

Later, Dr. Ethan Choi walked into the waiting area where Hailey and the unit were gathered. He looked serious but calm.

"Hailey, everyone, I wanted to give you an update on Jay's condition. He's stable for now, but he's been through a lot. We had to remove part of his lower intestine and he's in a lot of pain. He's groggy but lucid," Choi explained.

The unit members exchanged worried glances.

"How bad is it, really?" Burgess asked.

"He's going to need time to recover. The surgery was extensive, and he'll be in a lot of pain for a while. We're managing it as best as we can, but he needs rest and minimal stress," Choi replied.

Choi led them to Jay's room and opened the door. The unit rushed in, surrounding Jay's bed. Jay looked pale and weak, but he managed a small smile when he saw them.

"He's been asking about you all. Just keep it brief, he needs to rest," a nurse advised.

"Jay…" Hailey whispered.

"Hey… I'm okay. Just… tired," Jay replied.

Hailey took his hand, tears in her eyes.

"You're going to be okay. We're all here for you."

The unit members offered words of encouragement, trying to keep the mood light despite the gravity of the situation.

"Alright, everyone. Let's give him some space to rest. He needs it," Choi said.

The unit slowly filed out, leaving Hailey alone with Jay for a moment.

"I love you, Jay. Just focus on getting better," Hailey said softly.

"Love you too, Hailey," Jay replied.

Hailey leaned down and kissed his forehead before stepping out of the room, her heart heavy but hopeful.

Jay startled awake in his hospital bed, his eyes wide with fear and pain. Hailey, who had been dozing in a chair beside him, immediately noticed the tears streaming down his face. Without hesitation, she kicked off her shoes and climbed onto the bed, gently pulling Jay into her arms.

"Shh, it's okay, Jay. I'm here," she whispered soothingly.

Jay sobbed, his voice trembling. "My belly hurts…"

Hailey kissed his neck softly, trying to soothe him.

"Where does it hurt, baby?"

"Lower right…" Jay's voice was barely a whisper as he indicated the spot.

Hailey placed her hand gently on the area, applying light pressure to comfort him.

"I'm right here. Just breathe with me, okay?"

Jay nodded weakly, his sobs gradually subsiding as Hailey held him close, whispering soothing words.

She continued to stroke his hair and kiss his neck, offering him as much comfort as she could.

Later, Hailey gently laid Jay back against the pillows, trying to make him comfortable. But Jay sobbed, reaching out for her, his voice filled with desperation.

"Please, Hailey… I need you…"

Hailey's heart broke seeing him in so much pain. She climbed back onto the bed, wrapping her arms around him and holding him close.

"I'm right here, Jay. I'm not going anywhere."

Jay buried his face in her shoulder, his sobs gradually quieting as he felt her warmth and comfort. Hailey continued to hold him, whispering soothing words and gently stroking his back.

As Jay nestled in Hailey's arms, his breathing started to even out. The door opened, and a nurse walked in, noticing the scene.

"Looks like he's in good hands. How's he doing?" the nurse asked.

"He's in a lot of pain, but he's calming down now," Hailey replied, her eyes never leaving Jay's face.

"We can offer him some sleep aids to help him rest," the nurse suggested.

Hailey shook her head gently.

"No, thank you. I'll rock him to sleep. He needs to feel safe right now."

The nurse nodded understandingly. "Alright. If you need anything, just let us know."

The nurse quietly exited the room, leaving Hailey and Jay alone. Hailey continued to hold Jay, gently rocking him back and forth, whispering soothing words.

"Just rest, Jay. I've got you. Everything's going to be okay."

Jay's eyes fluttered closed, and he finally drifted off to sleep, feeling the comfort and love of Hailey's embrace.
