The cozy apartment was filled with the mouth-watering aroma of garlic and tomatoes. Hailey Halstead was in the kitchen, stirring a pot of pasta, while Jay lounged on the couch, his shirt slightly ridden up, revealing a hint of his abs. He was engrossed in texting Kevin, chuckling at something on his phone.
"Kevin's got the funniest stories, I swear," Jay said, still smiling at his screen.
"Yeah? What's he saying now?" Hailey asked, her focus on cooking.
Jay didn't respond immediately, too absorbed in his phone. Hailey turned her attention back to the pasta, not noticing the water starting to boil over. She reached for the pot handle, but her hand slipped into the boiling water.
"Ah! Damn it!" Hailey yelped in pain.
Jay's head snapped up, phone forgotten. He jumped off the couch and rushed to her side.
"Hailey! Are you okay?" he asked, grabbing a towel and gently wrapping it around her hand, his face full of concern.
"Yeah, just burned myself. I wasn't paying attention," Hailey grimaced.
"Let me take a look. We need to run it under cold water," Jay said softly.
He guided her to the sink, turning on the cold tap and holding her hand under the stream. Hailey winced but relaxed slightly as the cool water soothed the burn.
"You need to be more careful. I can't have you getting hurt on my watch," Jay said gently.
"Guess I got distracted by your abs," Hailey smiled through the pain.
Jay laughed, shaking his head. "
Well, I guess I'll have to keep my shirt on from now on."
Jay was still holding Hailey's hand under the cold water when she suddenly felt a slight pop in her hand and screamed, wincing in pain.
"Ah! Jay, something's wrong!" she cried.
Jay's eyes widened with concern. He quickly turned off the tap and examined her hand more closely.
"We need to get you to Chicago Med. Now," he said urgently. He gently but firmly guided her towards the door, grabbing his keys and phone on the way out. Hailey, still in pain, leaned on him for support.
"Jay, it's probably nothing. I just… it hurts so much," Hailey said through gritted teeth.
"I'm not taking any chances. Let's go," Jay said determinedly.
They rushed into the emergency room at Chicago Med. Jay quickly explained the situation to a nurse, who nodded and led them to a treatment area. A doctor arrived shortly after, examining Hailey's hand.
"It looks like you might have a second-degree burn. We'll need to treat this right away," the doctor said calmly.
Jay stayed by Hailey's side, holding her uninjured hand and offering words of comfort.
"You're going to be okay, Hailey. I'm right here," he said softly.
The doctor prepared to suture Hailey's hand. Jay stood close by, his presence a comforting anchor for Hailey.
As the doctor began the procedure, Hailey winced and tears started to form in her eyes.
"It hurts so much…" Hailey sobbed softly.
"I know, Hailey. Just hold on, it's almost over," Jay said, gently stroking her hair.
Hailey squeezed Jay's hand tightly, her sobs growing louder as the doctor continued. Jay's heart ached seeing her in pain, but he stayed strong for her.
"Almost done, Hailey. You're doing great," the doctor reassured.
Finally, the doctor finished suturing her hand and applied a bandage. Hailey, overwhelmed with relief and pain, collapsed into Jay's arms, hugging him tightly. Jay wrapped his arms around her, holding her close.
"Thank you, Jay. I don't know what I'd do without you," Hailey said, her voice muffled against his chest.
"You're strong, Hailey. I'm always here for you," Jay replied softly.
They stayed like that for a moment, finding comfort in each other's embrace. The doctor gave them a reassuring smile before leaving them alone.
In the dimly lit bedroom, the soft glow of a bedside lamp cast a warm light over Hailey and Jay. Hailey lay in bed, restless and struggling to find a comfortable position with her bandaged hand. Jay watched her with concern, lying beside her.
"Can't sleep?" Jay asked softly.
Hailey sighed.
"No, it's just… my hand hurts, and I can't stop thinking about everything."
Jay shifted closer, gently wrapping an arm around her shoulders.
"It's going to be okay, Hailey. The pain will get better, and you'll heal. Just try to relax."
Hailey nodded, but her eyes were still filled with worry. Jay leaned in and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead.
"Close your eyes. I'm right here with you," he whispered.
Hailey took a deep breath and closed her eyes, trying to focus on Jay's comforting presence. He started to hum a soft tune, his voice soothing in the quiet room. Slowly, Hailey's breathing steadied, and she began to relax.
"Thank you, Jay. I don't know what I'd do without you," she murmured.
"You don't have to worry about that. I'm not going anywhere," Jay replied softly.
With Jay's comforting words and the warmth of his embrace, Hailey finally started to drift off to sleep, feeling safe and loved.
