Welcome one, welcome all!
The sequel to Forever will be. Please read that one first before starting this one. :)
Some notes:
- English is not my first language, if you see any error please let me know.
- I do not own the Twilight Franchise and its character's. I do however own Evelyn Swan and any other character you don't recognize in this story.
For those interested I also am currently writing another Twilight story called "Down in the Willow Garden" which is a Carlisle/OC romance story.
Chapter 1: At the beginning
Every morning she stared into the mirror, wondering if the reflection she saw was really her. A porcelain face, which sparkled as soon as the rays from the sun glided into the room. Golden hair which shone just as bright and a pair of light amber eyes. The colour of honey, or so she thought.
It had taken a while and oh, how she'd struggled. But eventually that dark burgundy red had changed, slowly but surely. With the help of the man she loved and his two adopted siblings.
The first weeks she hadn't dared to look in that mirror. Afraid of the pair of red eyes that would greet her. Perhaps one day she could get over it. After all, she was one of them now. But until then, any pair of red eyes would always remind her of Demetri.
Evelyn traced the crescent shaped scar on her neck, then lowered her fingers to the same mark located in the soft tissue where her collarbones met. Two bites. Both created by Carlisle Cullen. An intimate gesture, one that had pulled her back from the dead. If he hadn't done it, she wouldn't be standing here.
Some days she cursed him. Some days she was thankful. Was it normal to struggle like this? They all assured her it was. None of them had accepted their immortal live immediately. Rosalie still had days she wished it had never happened to her.
With one final glance at her reflection, Evelyn left the bedroom and descended the stairs of their current home. A log cabin somewhere deep in a forest in Canada. This was the second home they'd stayed at since her transformation.
The first one had been in Alaska. A good place to learn how to hunt properly. A remote area, away from humans as to avoid any temptation during that time. Once her eyes had gradually begun to change colour, they went to Canada. A bit warmer, not by much, but less snow.
A few months had passed and Evelyn had been in contact with her cousin and Alice through letters. Bella had been upset with her at first. Voicing slight anger and disappointment for not having said goodbye. How she wasn't going to marry Edwards until they'd come back to Forks. The last letter had practically begged her to come back. Even if only for a little while.
Alice had been upset too, but more so because she hadn't gone with them to Alaska and Canada. She made sure Bella had some company, they'd even gone shopping for wedding dresses and Alice promised in her letter that she already had picked out the best bridesmaid dress for her and Rosalie.
Those moments made Evelyn feel a bit human again.
Evelyn reached the downstairs area where the kitchen was located right next to the living room. Wooden walls and floors. It was a small space, but large enough for the four of them. Two bedrooms, both located upstairs, and each with their own bathroom. That was really all they needed. The real gem was the forest right on their back porch, granting access to all sorts of wildlife for them to hunt. Which was what Jasper and Emmett were currently doing.
Rosalie was still upstairs, getting ready for the day. Evelyn walked to the piano situated in the living room. An unnecessary object perhaps in such a remote area, but it had been a constant source of entertainment during most nights. With her playing and Rosalie singing.
For a moment Evelyn halted when multiple sounds came from the front of the house. Voices. Young and playful. An older female voice comforting the sobs of another. There were people approaching the cabin. She rushed to the door and peeked through the small circular window.
Children, about a dozen of them and a woman carrying a child. A school trip? That must be it. All of them wearing little backpacks. Why were they coming this way? Evelyn stepped back as they reached the door and a loud knock followed.
"Hello? Is anybody there?" The woman spoke.
What was she suppose to do? Opening the door was the obvious answer, but what if she were to lose,- No. No, she could do this. She had never bitten a human since becoming immortal. She was strong. Just ignore the delicious smells beckoning her to sink her teeth into,- Evelyn opened the door just as she heard Rosalie coming down the steps.
"Hello." She greeted the woman and nodded her head at the children. "Everything alright?"
"Oh thank goodness. One of the kids fell and hurt their knee. I thought I'd packed a first aid kit, but I can't find it anywhere. Do you have something to clean the wound?"
The teacher lifted the boy in her arms and Evelyn's eyes landed on his knee. She'd already noticed it, had felt her throat ache as if she hadn't had a drink of water in,- well months. Parched and famished.
"Evelyn!" Rosalie appeared next to her and slightly pushed her aside. "Why don't you let me take care of this? I am a nurse after all."
The lie was obvious to Evelyn, but not to the teacher. Evelyn growled at her friend. But Rosalie didn't budge in the slightest. She told the woman at the door she'd be right back and shut it, not giving her a way to reply.
"Have you lost your mind?" She hissed between her teeth after turning to Evelyn.
"Nothing happened."
"Not yet. Your eyes are dark as the night." The other woman replied. "Come on, go upstairs. I'll get rid of them. And don't you dare go outside while I'm taking care of that child."
Rosalie ushered Evelyn towards the stairs, which she begrudgingly ascended. It was for the best. Rosalie could handle herself better than she would be able to. But still, Evelyn couldn't withhold herself from stealing a glance out of the window as she passed it.
Eleven children, huddled together behind their teacher. Some on the floor, looking incredibly tired. Others standing, kicking rocks with their feet. The door opened once more and Evelyn heard the teacher entering with the kid. Just a small wound, nothing too serious. Rosalie had everything ready to clean it.
But the scent of blood, no matter how little it was, made its way to her nose. Evelyn inhaled deeply and shuddered, licking her lips in the process. The sight of all those kids outside was not helping either. She could test herself and wait it out. Or leave and hunt alongside Jasper and Emmett.
No. No, she had to stay put. Up on the first floor, with all her thoughts focused on her self-control. The day might come when she would be somewhere alone, perhaps in a big crowd. Being independent had always been important to her and she really hadn't had any of that since becoming,- this.
Tilting her head back, Evelyn glanced up at the ceiling. Rosalie had just finished cleaning the child's wound. The teacher thanked her and once again the door creaked.
"Enjoy the rest of your trip!" Rosalie said out loud to the group of kids.
Evelyn looked out the window and watched them walking away from the cabin. Had time past so quickly? But she'd done it. Somehow she had. She puffed her cheeks and leaned her back against the wall.
A couple of days had passed since the short visit from the group of schoolchildren and still Evelyn did not dare to enter a larger crowd of people. She stared at her reflection, most specifically her eyes. She'd come this far. The next logical step would be entering a town or maybe a small village. If she was going to head back to Forks at some point, it was unavoidable anyway.
Another person appeared in the mirror behind her. A pair of golden eyes, honey blond wavy locks hanging over them. His lopsided lips grinned mischievously and a pair of arms wrapped themselves around her.
Jasper.
"Daydreaming, my darlin'?" He asked with his velvet voice.
Evelyn smiled at the mirror. "Something like that."
"Thinking about when we'll return to Forks?"
He was no mind reader, yet he could always tell what was on her mind. Where her emotions such a dead giveaway? They most likely were to him. He saw right through her.
"I have patience," She told him firmly.
Which she had. Part of her couldn't wait to see Bella again. The way they parted hadn't been ideal, but necessary. The moment would soon come that she was going to be in the same room with her cousin again. But she wasn't ready yet and Jasper knew this. He must miss them terribly too. Carlisle, Esme, Alice and Edward.
They'd all graduated. The wedding between Edward and Bella was going to happen this year, but only once Evelyn would be back in Forks.
"I can't believe Bella is going to get married and then once they are…"
"She'll become one of us." Jasper filled in.
"I hope she'll feel less pain because of the morphine plan Carlisle and Edward have come up with."
It sounded like a good idea. A chance of changing without any pain. Sharp stabs, like walking barefoot in the snow, only the snowflakes were knives slicing into your skin. And then the cold was replaced by an intense warmth. Hot, boiling flames crawling up and down your spine,-
"Darlin'?"
Evelyn blinked once and looked at Jasper in the mirror.
"It's alright." He whispered, moving his hand to cup her jaw, gently turning her face towards him. "I know how you feel."
Jasper planted a swift kiss on her mouth, trailed down to her neck, pausing for a moment to press his lips against the crescent shaped mark.
"I'm extremely happy you're still with me."
"I am too" Evelyn replied, meaning every word of it.
Beautiful Evelyn. Jasper looked at the woman in his arms. He'd never felt happier and he counted himself lucky that Carlisle had managed to bite her in time. If she'd died on that table, Jasper would have asked his family to grant him the same fate. Living without her,- it would have been impossible.
And this time away from the house, where all of that had gone down, was just the thing they needed. Time with each other. Alone. Sure, Rosalie and Emmett were there, only around when they wanted to be except for the evenings when he and Emmett would listen to the girls playing the piano and singing.
Jasper was grateful for them being there, they were a great with helping and guiding Evelyn through her newborn phase. But that's all it was. A phase. They would return to Forks and then things were bound to change again. Part of him did not want to return. He enjoyed his time alone with her too much. The thought of having to share her with others detested him.
"Now who's daydreaming?" Evelyn stared at him with a small smile.
He grinned back. "Just thinking how beautiful you are."
Intertwining their fingers together, Jasper pulled her with him. " Come, let's head downstairs."
"Are we going somewhere?" She asked curiously.
"You'll see."
Rosalie and Emmett had suggested to him earlier to take Evelyn for a ride to Alberta. One of their former homes before moving to Forks. Considering they had already gone on a trip down memory lane with her, Alberta was a nice next stop. The other couple was already downstairs with their bags packed.
Evelyn's face fell a little at the sight of it. "We're not going back to Forks yet, are we?"
"We're going to Calgary, Alberta!" Emmett exclaimed loudly.
Jasper rolled his eyes. Leave it to Emmett to spoil the surprise.
"Calgary? Your former home?" Evelyn looked at Rosalie, who nodded.
Emmett walked up to her and made a fist. "What do you say to one last wrestle match before we hit the road?"
Another thing that returned almost every day, Emmett's ongoing need to wrestle Evy because at this point she was still stronger than him. Jasper crossed his arms over his chest and gave his brother-in-law a look. He for one did not care much about these wrestling matches. Sometimes he suspected that Emmett was doing it on purpose because he knew how much it annoyed him.
"You'll just lose again." Evelyn chuckled.
Emmett shrugged at her remark and without warning pushed Jasper out of the way. Rosalie rolled her eyes as her husband reached for the other woman. Jasper growled but didn't interfere, he could tell Evelyn secretly enjoyed being able to beat somebody as tall and strong as Emmett.
"He'll be so disappointed once she's out of this stage." Rosalie sighed.
"I won't be. I'm not enjoying this at all."
Rosalie snorted. "I know you're not concerned about her getting hurt."
That he wasn't and he knew Emmett would be careful nonetheless. But he didn't like the idea of Evelyn being in any kind of close proximity with anyone, even if this was a friendly and well intended wrestling match. Damn, Jasper knew he was incredibly territorial when it came to his mate. And he'd have to be careful with that behaviour some point in the future. For the Volturi would still want to meet Evelyn, see her, like they were going to want to see Bella once she's turned. He had to make sure to keep his own emotions in check once that day would come.
A big blurry thing, shaped an awful lot like Emmett, flew past Jasper and Rosalie. He got beaten once again. Rosalie quickly went after her husband as Jasper turned to Evelyn. She was already smiling at him, making a 'come hither' movement with her index finger. Excitement and lust pouring out of her like seductive sweet perfume. Jasper had no reason to ignore her plea.
Jasper scooped her up in his arms and planted a kiss on her lips. "Victory is yours once more."
"Was there any doubt?" She frowned.
"None." Evy, his Evy.
Rosalie cleared her throat at their little display of affection before telling Emmett to go and put the bags in the car so they could leave.
"This is it, my love. A new adventure before we go back home." Jasper said to the woman in arms.
Evy stroked the back of his neck with her fingers and shivers shot down his spine. "I'm going to miss this house…" She said to him with a sad voice.
"It's not goodbye forever." Jasper smiled, but he also shared her sadness. These weeks alone had been wonderful. Who knew, maybe someday they would go back there.
Deep in the forest
"These are your targets." He said firmly, no questions asked.
"And once I'm there, what is my next step in your little plan?" The other man asked him.
The cloaked immortal waved his hand. "Nothing extreme, I want you to befriend them. Especially her."
He pointed at the woman in the picture. She was beautiful. Golden hair, blue eyes. Mortal?
"A human?"
"She's no longer mortal. But she is a newborn, so you have to be on your guard. One slip of the tongue and she will have your head."
His head? The guy looked at the picture again. The pay was too good to pass up. But he still didn't know what reasoning was behind all of this.
"Why her and not one of the others?"
"She's your ticket into their coven, you get her to trust you and you'll be safe."
There were others on the photograph as well. A male with honey coloured wavy hair, his arms encircled around the woman. He was smiling at her. Obviously a man in love. He pointed at him in the picture.
"Who is this?"
Immediately the hooded figure pulled the picture from his hands and he hissed through his teeth.
"It's not important who he is. He is nobody."
Clearly this was not a topic to push. The instructions were clear. She was the ticket into their coven and anything else was apparently a touchy subject.
"What if she doesn't trust me?"
"Then you'll be an even more dead man than you already are." The guy threatened. "Kindness and sympathy is the way in. And whatever you do, don't mention me or this place."
Somehow part of him at already deduced that, but he still had some questions. Just as he was about to open his mouth, there was a knock on the door.
"You're needed, my lord." A young female voice said from the other side.
"Tell him I'll be there in a minute."
"I'm afraid the orders are quite clear, my lord. No more waiting." The girl said clear and loudly.
"Fine." The other vampire growled and he turned back to face him. "Contact me once you get there...and do remember, if you don't succeed…"
He didn't have to finish his sentence, it was more than apparent what threat he was going to make once again. The mission was clear as day. Find the woman. Gain her trust. Befriend the coven and new instructions would follow.
