Chapter 11 - The beginning of an Animosity

Remus woke up, an extreme feeling of Nausea accompanying him. He tried turning, hoping to throw up on the side of the bed, but he had a searing pain in his side, purging out everything that was in his stomach…

Madame Pomfrey came, noticing that he had vomited. She changed his blanket, and helped Remus settle back in.

"How are you feeling?" she asked gently, brushed away the hair in Remus' eyes, and he tried to

Talk but no words would come out of his dry mouth.

Madame Pomfrey handed him a glass of water, and Remus drank the cold fluids greedily, feeling satisfied now that his throat was moist.

"Fine…" he replied, though that was a lie. Remus didn't want Madame Pomfrey to use up her

Potions on medicines to help relieve his pain, besides… He didn't deserve it anyways…

"Ok," she said calmly, "Let me redress your wounds though," she helped Remus take his shirt off and Remus couldn't suppress a gasp of horror when he saw a large, bloody, gash on his side.

"You injured yourself pretty badly," she informed, adding some healing stuff to the wound, which made Remus wince in pain.

"Almost done," she said quickly, applying the last bit and patching the wound up. Remus yawned suddenly, an extreme feeling of tiredness overcoming him.

"I'll fix your foot up now -" she said but Remus didn't catch the last bit because he fell against his comfy pillow, sleep overcoming him…

Remus woke up, feeling much better than he had the last time he was awake. This full moon probably wasn't too bad, he thought happily.

"Are you feeling better?" Madame Pomfrey asked, as though she had been summoned the moment he opened his eyes.

"Yes," he began and Madame Pomfrey smiled. "Much better." Madame Pomfrey adjusted his pillows making it much comfier.

"Do you think I can go to school tomorrow?" Remus questioned. He didn't want to have to catch up on any school work, and even more so, he didn't want his friends questioning him for being away so long.

"I don't know dear," she replied and Remus' heart sank. "But we'll see, if you're able to finish your breakfast tomorrow I'll let you go."

Remus nodded, and surprisingly, he had an appetite, unlike most full moons.

"I'm going to bring you something to eat," Madame Pomfrey said at last, leaving Remus in the hospital wing alone. He scanned his body, noticing that the only horrible wound was the one on his side. Though it was healing, it still hurt like fire.

Madame Pomfrey returned, carrying a tray with a sandwich, some asparagus, and a glass of water.

"You don't have to eat it all," she began, positioning the tray on his lap, "Just at least finish the sandwich."

She left the room, leaving Remus in peace. He took a bite of the sandwich, cherishing the warm, chewy, turkey that was placed between the two small pieces of bread.

He ended up finishing most of the sandwich, and a bit of the asparagus. After that he settled down, quickly falling asleep afterwards…

Remus woke up, blinking in the blurry morning light. Madame Pomfrey walked to where he was laying, and stopped at the side of his bed.

"Feeling better?" she asked, as she began mixing two concoctions. Probably my medicine, Remus thought shivering as he remembered the tastes of the horrid liquids.

"Yes, can I go to class today?" he was anxious to hear the answer, though he felt way better so Madame Pomfrey would probably let him go.

"Yes, but first I need you to eat a bit and I have to look at your wounds again," she said and Remus was relieved he'd be able to go to school, even though he'd probably be missing a few of the first classes.

Remus was served breakfast, which was turkey flavored soup, and a side sandwich. When he finished, his wounds were redressed and then he was told to rest for a while.

Remus changed into his clothes, took his last doses of medicine, and got his nasty scars redressed.

"If the wound on your side opens up, come here straight away," Madame Pomfrey said sternly, but her face quickly became a look of kindness.

"Ok Mam," Remus replied politely, waving his goodbyes as he exited the room. He remembered that he would have Flying with Madame Hooch at the time, so he hurried down the many staircases of the school, eventually finding many students standing next to broomsticks.

"Am I late," Remus asked shyly, feeling embarrassed under the eyes of all the students standing in front of him.

Madame Hooch just gestured towards a broom laying on the floor and Remus scurried over to it, well aware of the confused expressions from his friends.

"Where were you?" Sirius whispered, and Remus tried to think of an excuse, but none came to him.

"Erm… I'll tell you later," Remus whispered back and Sirius nodded. At least I have time to think up an excuse, Remus thought.

Madame Hooch instructed everyone on how to mount the brooms, which Remus and his friends already knew how to do from Oliver.

"Now, on the count of three, kick off from the ground," she ordered firmly, "One… Two… Three!"

Several students shot up into the air, though they all hovered very close to the ground, warily looking around.

James and Sirius began zooming around as Remus had expected, earning gasps and comments of awe from the gathered students.

Remus heard a grumble come from somewhere in the crowd and he turned around to see Severus with a mad expression on his face.

"Just ignore them…" Lily said, walking off to the side with Severus.

Sirius and James were yelling now, but not of terror, but of excitement. All the students were cheering louder now and even the teacher seemed quite impressed.

Suddenly, James lowered to the ground and began eyeing Severus every few seconds. He pulled out his wand and muttered something very quietly under his breath.

"Ok everyone," Madame Hooch said, traveling to the front of the crowd, "Everyone try to ride your brooms."

Remus positioned himself, kicking off the ground and hovering a couple of feet from the ground. Madame Hooch shot him an approving look and began walking around, helping students who were struggling.

Suddenly, a yelp of terror sounded from a few feet away, and Remus turned around to see Severus' broom shaking as though it were a bull.

Remus turned and saw James laughing and Sirius laughing lightly from where he was seated on his broom.

Severus' broom began heading towards a large tree, and he fought to stay in control, but he couldn't.

"Jump off!" Lily screeched, running quickly to catch up with Severus, "Jump off!"

Severus' eyes flashed in terror, eventually, he jumped off, and his broom crashed into the tree, splintering into several pieces.

Lily rushed over Severus, checking if he was ok, then she turned and saw James and Sirius laughing and her face was a mixture of anger and annoyance.

"Did you jinx his broom?!" Lily boomed, her gaze dark as it landed on James, who immediately stopped laughing.

"Erm… Yeah… But it was all in good fun…" Sirius said in James' place.

Suddenly, Madame Hooch came walking angrily towards the two boys, anger flashing in her gaze.

"Off to Dumbledoore's office, now!" She screeched, pointing her finger towards the school. James and Sirius guiltily began walking towards the school, though Remus noticed that they were laughing a bit under their breath.

"Now that that's over…" Madame Hooch began, "continue practicing…"

Remus saw that Lily and Severus were now sitting off to the side, not wanting to get involved in the broomstick riding anymore.

"Honestly! What's their problem!" Remus heard Severus say, and he right away knew that he was talking about James.

"I don't know, he's just a jerk." Remus couldn't help stifle a gasp of amusement, it was clear that James liked Lily, but Lily didn't like him, not at all.

"I mean, he's quite good at flying," Lily pointed out.

"Too good. That bratty, arrogant, Grifindor just wants to show off…"

Remus noticed Lily giving Severus a mad expression, probably because she was in the Grifindor house as well.

"Sorry…" Severus said, dipping his head and Lily just nodded.

"One thing for certain though," Severus began, "I don't like James, not one single bit…" Lily just nodded, and Remus thought, what if this ends in a true rivalry?
