The Lazarus Experiment
After taking Mom home we started out on the short trip to take Martha back to her time. It wasn't very long before the Doctor put on the hand brake. "There we go. Perfect landing. Which isn't easy in such a tight spot." said my uncle.
"You should be used to tight spots by now." I said with a smirk.
Martha laughed and asked "Where are we?"
"The end of the line," said my uncle, as Martha rushed do the door, "No place like it."
She stepped outside and found herself in her own apartment. "Home. You took me home?" she asked.
"In fact, the morning after we left, so you've only been gone about 12 hours," I said, "No time at all, really."
"But all the stuff we've done. Shakespeare, New New York, old New York?"
"Yep, all in one night, relatively speaking," said The Doctor, as he walked around, "Everything should be just as it was. Books, CDs," he picked up a pair of Martha's underwear off of a drying rack, "laundry." Martha took the underwear from him and I shook my head, "So, back were you were, as promised."
"This is it?" asked Martha.
"Yeah," said my uncle as he took a deep breath, "We should probably…"
Just then Martha's phone rang, "Hi!" said Martha's voice on her answering machine, "I'm out. Leave a message."
"I'm sorry." said Martha.
" Martha, are you there? Pick it up, will you?" said the woman on the phone.
"It's Mum. It'll wait."
"All right then, pretend that you're out if you like," said Martha's Mom, "I was only calling to say that your sister's on TV. On the news of all things. Just thought you might be interested."
Martha turned on the TV. They were showing a press conference with a man who looked
like he was in his 70s, Prof. Lazarus. Next to him was Martha's sister, Tish. "The details are top secret," said Prof. Lazarus.
"How could Tish end up on the news?" asked Martha.
"Tonight, I will demonstrate a device which will redefine our world."
"She's got a new job. PR for some research lab."
"With the push of a single button, I will change what it means to be human."
Then Martha turned the TV off, "Sorry. You were saying we should…?"
"Yes, yes, we should. One trip is what we said." said The Doctor.
"Yeah. I suppose things just kind of escalated," said Martha.
"Seems to happen to us a lot," I said.
"Thank you. For everything." said Martha.
"It was my pleasure," said my uncle as he went back in the TARDIS.
"See you in a minute…" I said with a smile and wink, then I followed him in the TARDIS. But I didn't move away from the door.
He started up the TARDIS and by the time we entered the Time Vortex, he said, "Wait a minute." I smiled, rolled my eyes and shook my head. We rematerialized inside Martha's apartment and he went to the door, "No, I'm sorry. Did he say he was going to change what it means to be human?"
That night we made our way to Lazarus Laboratories. Martha called her sister and found out that she was invited. So, The Doctor and I decide to tag along. It was black tie, so we had to dress up. I was wearing a blue ankle length dress and had my hair up in French twist. Martha was wearing a purple knee length dress and was wearing her hair down. The Doctor was wearing a nice black suit with a black bow tie. As we walked he was buttoning the cuffs of his dress shirt, "Whenever I wear this, something bad always happens."
"It's not the outfit, that's you." I said.
Martha laughed, "I think it suits you. In a James Bond kind of way."
"James Bond?" he said defensively. Then he thought for a moment, "Really?"
"I'll say this much…" I said, "I like the bowtie… Bowties are cool…"
We walked into the reception room. In the middle of the room was a large, white box almost as big as the TARDIS surrounded by for large pillars. As we looked at the machine in the middle of the room my uncle saw a waiter walk past with a tray of hors d'oeuvres, "Oh, look, they've got nibbles! I love nibbles." He took some off the tray and tossed a whole one into his mouth.
I shook my head, "I swear sometimes you act like a little kid…" I looked at a tray of food that passed by me, "ooh, Those look good…" I picked some off the tray and tossed one in the air and caught it in my mouth…"Mmm…"
"Hello." said Martha's sister, Tish as she came up to us.
"Tish," said Martha as she hugged her.
"You look great. So, what do you think? Impressive, isn't it?"
"Very."
"And two nights out in a row for you. That's dangerously close to a social life."
"If I keep this up, I'll end up in all the gossip columns."
"You might, actually. You should keep an eye out for photographers. And Mum, she's coming too. Even dragging Leo along with her."
"Leo in black tie? That I must see," Martha could see Tish was looking at me and the Doctor. "This is, er, the Doctor and his niece, Teddy."
"Nice to meet you," I said.
"Hello." said my uncle.
"Are they with you?"
"Yeah," said Martha.
"But they're not on the list. How did they get in?"
"He's my plus one," said Martha.
"and I'm his plus one," I said.
"So, this Lazarus, he's your boss?" asked my uncle to change the subject.
"Professor Lazarus, yes," nodded Tish, "I'm part of his executive staff."
"She's in the PR department," said Martha as she rolled her eyes.
"I'm head of the PR department, actually."
"You're joking."
"I put this whole thing together."
"So do you know what the professor's going to be doing tonight?" asked The Doctor, "That looks like it might be a sonic micro-field manipulator."
"He's a science geek. I should have known. Got to get back to work now. I'll catch up with you later."
"Science geek? What does that mean?"
"That your obsessively enthusiastic about it," I said.
"Oh, nice." he said with a smile.
I shook my head, "900 years old and you don't know what a science geek is…"
"Martha." called a woman.
We turned and saw Martha's mom and brother. Martha went up to her mom and gave her a big hug, "Mum!"
"Oh…All right," said Martha's mom, "what's the occasion?"
"What do you mean? I'm just pleased to see you, that's all."
"You saw me last night."
"I know. I just… miss you," then she turned to her brother, "You're looking good, Leo."
"Yeah," said Leo, "If anyone asks me to fetch them a drink, I'll swing for him."
"You disappeared last night." said Martha's mom.
"I… just went home." said Martha.
"On your own?"
"These are some friends of mine, this is Teddy Duncan…"
"Nice to meet you," I said as I shook Mrs. Jones' hand and Leo's hand, "This is my uncle, The Doctor."
"Doctor what?" asked Mrs. Jones.
"No, It's just The Doctor," said Martha, "We've been doing some work together."
Leo shook my uncle hand and then he shook Mrs. Jones' hand, "It's lovely to meet you, Mrs. Jones. Heard a lot about you."
"Have you?" she asked, "What have you heard, then?"
"Oh, you know, that you're Martha's mother and… um… no, actually, that's about it. We haven't had much time to chat. You know, been busy."
"Busy? Doing what, exactly?"
"Oh you know. Stuff."
I rolled my eyes that my uncle couldn't think of anything. Just then there was a tapping on a glass. We turned and saw Professor Lazarus standing in front of his machine. "Ladies and gentlemen, I am Professor Richard Lazarus and tonight I am going to perform a miracle. It is, I believe, the most important advance since Rutherford split the atom, the biggest leap since Armstrong stood on the moon. Tonight, you will watch and wonder. Tomorrow, you will wake to a world which will be changed forever."
Lazarus entered the cabinet. Two female technicians started the machinery from a bank of instruments behind the cabinet. There was a high-pitched whir and a bright blue light as the four pillars began to spin individually. Creating an energy field. They began to rotate around the cabinet, going faster and faster. Then, a warning alarm went off.
"Something's wrong." I said.
"It's overloading." said The Doctor.
The technicians tried to stop it, but some of the panels exploded, sending off sparks. The Doctor and I ran over to controls. We took out our sonic screw drivers and aimed them at the control.
"Somebody stop them," shouted an old lady. She was Lady Thaw, Prof. Lazarus' backer, "Get them away from those controls!"
"If this thing goes up, it'll take the whole building with it. Is that what you want?" I shouted.
The Doctor pulled one of the main wires that connected to the machine and it slowly stopped spinning. Once, it stopped Martha ran to the door and we joined her, "Get it open!" shouted my uncle.
Once we got the door open, my jaw dropped. I saw a man 40 years younger than Prof. Lazarus. He stepped completely out and declared, "Ladies and gentlemen, I am Richard Lazarus. I am seventy six years old and I am reborn!"
The assembled crowd went crazy. Needless to say, The Doctor and I were less than enthusiastic. A little later, Lazarus was talking with his guests and taking pictures. Martha and I were just watching the goings on, while The Doctor examined the machine.
"It can't be the same guy. It's impossible. It must be a trick," said Martha.
"It's not a trick," I said, "I wish it were."
"What just happened then?"
"He just changed what it means to be human," said The Doctor
We walked over to him and watched as Prof. Lazarus cracked his neck in pain and gasped. A waiter walked by with a tray of hors d'oeuvres and Prof. Lazarus took the whole thing and started shoveling one after another into his mouth. "Richard…" scolded Lady Thaw.
"I'm famished."
"Energy deficit," I said.
"Always happens with this kind of process," said The Doctor.
"You speak as if you see this every day…" said Prof. Lazarus.
"Teddy," I said.
"Doctor," added my uncle, "And well, no, not every day, but I have some experience of this kind of transformation."
"That's not possible." said Prof. Lazarus.
"Using hypersonic sound waves to create a state of resonance," I said, "That's inspired."
"You understand the theory, then."
"Enough to know that you couldn't possibly have allowed for all the variables."
"No experiment is entirely without risk."
"That thing nearly exploded," said my uncle, "You might as well have stepped into a blender."
"You're not qualified to comment," said Lady Thaw.
"If we hadn't stopped it, it would have exploded.'
"Then I thank you, Doctor," said Prof. Lazarus, "But that's a simple engineering issue. What happened inside the capsule was exactly what was supposed to happen. No more, no less."
"You've no way of knowing that until you've run proper tests," said Martha.
"Look at me. You can see what happened. I'm all the proof you need."
"This device will be properly certified before we start to operate commercially," said Lady Thaw.
'Commercially?!" I said, "You're kidding! That'll cause chaos!"
"Not chaos, change," said Lazarus, "A chance for humanity to evolve, to improve."
"This isn't about improving," said The Doctor, "This is about you and your customers living a little longer."
"Not a little longer, Doctor. A lot longer. Perhaps indefinitely."
"Richard, we have things to discuss, upstairs," said Lady Thaw.
"Goodbye, Doctor. In a few years, you'll look back and laugh at how wrong you were," said Prof. Lazarus. Then, reached out, took Martha's hand and kissed the back of it before leaving with Lady Thaw.
"Oh, he's out of his depth," said my uncle, "No idea of the damage he might have done."
"So what do we do now?" asked Martha.
"Well, this building must be full of laboratories," I said, "I say we do our own tests."
"Lucky I've just collected a DNA sample then, isn't it?" said Martha, with a smile.
The Doctor and I smiled, "Oh, Martha Jones, you're a star." said my uncle. Then we went to find a Lab. A few minutes later, we finished the DNA test and were looking at the results on a computer screen. "Amazing," said The Doctor.
"Remarkable," I said.
"What?" asked Martha.
"Lazarus's DNA," said The Doctor.
"I can't see anything different."
"Look at it."
Just then the image of DNA strand on the screen changed for a split second, "Oh, my God. Did that just change? But it can't have."
"But it did," I said.
"It's impossible," said Martha.
"And that's two impossible things we've seen so far tonight. Don't you love it when that happens?" asked my uncle.
"I know I do," I said with a smile.
"That means Lazarus has changed his own molecular patterns," said Martha.
"Hypersonic sound waves to destabilize the cell structure, then a metagenic program to manipulate the coding in the protein strands," said The Doctor, "Basically, he hacked into his own genes and instructed them to rejuvenate."
"But they're still mutating now."
"Because he missed something," I said, "Something in his DNA has been activated and won't let him stabilize. Something that's trying to change him."
"Change him into what?" asked Martha.
"I don't know, but I think we need to find out," said The Doctor.
"That woman said they were going upstairs."
"Let's go." Then we rushed out of the Lab to find Prof. Lazarus.
We stepped out of the elevator and into Prof. Lazarus office. The Doctor turned on the lights and Martha said, "This is his office, all right."
"So where is he?" I asked.
"Dunno. Let's try back at the re…ception…", said Martha. I could see why her voice trailed off as she poke. There was a pair of skeleton legs in high heels sticking out from behind the desk. We went around the desk and saw the remains of Lady Thaw, "Is that Lady Thaw?"
"Used to be. Now it's just a shell," said my uncle as the three of us knelt down beside the husk.
"She had all the life energy drained out of her like squeezing the juice out of an orange," I said.
"Lazarus?" asked Martha.
"Could be." said the Doctor.
"So he's changed already?"
"Not necessarily," I said, "You saw the DNA. It was fluctuating. The process must demand energy. This might not have been enough."
"So he might do this again?" asked Martha.
"Mmm." nodded the Doctor. We quickly stood up and ran back to the elevator to get back to the reception.
We got back to the reception and started looking around for Prof. Lazarus, "I can't see him." said Martha.
"He can't be far. Keep looking," said my uncle as we spit up to search for the Professor.
"Hey, you all right, Marth?" asked Martha's brother, as she and I walked past him, "I think Mum wants to talk to you."
"Have you seen Lazarus anywhere?" asked Martha.
"Yeah. He was getting' cosy with Tish a couple of minutes ago," said Leo.
My eyes got big when Leo said that. The Doctor walked up to us as Martha said, "With Tish?!"
Then, Martha's mom walked up to us, "Ah, Doctor." she said.
"Where did they go?" asked my uncle, ignoring Martha's Mom.
"Upstairs I think, why?" asked Leo.
"Doctor—" started Martha's Mom. But again my uncle ignored her and rushed pasted her spilling her drink.
"Sorry about him," I said as I followed him.
"I'm speaking to you!" called Martha's Mom.
"Not now, Mum!" said Martha.
We got back to the Professor's office and looked around for Tish and Lazarus. "Where are they?" asked Martha.
The Doctor took out his sonic screwdriver, "Fluctuating DNA will give off an energy signature. I might be able to pick it up." He it out at arm's length and slowly turned in a circle. The beeping of the sonic increased. "Got him."
"Where?" I asked. The Doctor pointed the sonic screwdriver at the ceiling.
"But this is the top floor!" said Martha, "The roof!" We ran for the stairs.
When we got to the roof we saw Tish standing beside Lazarus, "I find that nothing's ever exactly like you expect," He told her, "There's always something to surprise you. 'Between the idea and the reality, between the motion and the act-'"
"'Falls the shadow.'" finished my uncle.
Lazarus turned to look at us, "So the mysterious Doctor knows his Eliot. I'm impressed."
"Martha, what are you doing here?" asked Tish.
"Tish, get away from him," said Martha.
"What? Don't tell me what to do."
"I wouldn't have thought you had time for poetry, Professor," I said. What with you being busy defying the laws of nature and all."
"You're right, young lady," said Prof. Lazarus, "One lifetime's been too short for me to do everything I'd like. How much more would I get done in two or three or four?"
"Doesn't work like that," said my uncle, "Some people live more in 20 years than others do in 80. It's not the time that mattes; it's the person."
"But if it's the right person, what a gift that would be."
"Or what a curse. Look at what you've done to yourself."
"Who are you to judge me?"
'Over here, Tish," said Martha, as she called her sister over.
Tish walked over to Martha, "You have to spoil everything, don't you? Every time I find someone nice, you have to go and find fault."
"Tish, he's a monster!" shouted Martha.
Just then Lazarus collapsed and started to convulse. "I know the age thing's a bit freaky," said Tish, "But it works for Catherine Zeta-Jones."
Then there was a growl behind Tish. She slowly turned around and we saw the monster that Lazarus had become. It looks a cross between and human skeleton and a scorpion. It was huge! It rears up.
"Run!" shouted my uncle as it reared up ready to attack. The four of us ran inside with my uncle using his sonic to lock the door. We went to the elevator and Martha pressed the down button.
"Are you okay?" Martha asked Tish.
"I was gonna snog him," She replied.
The monster banged on the door. Sirens began to go off and a computerized warning went over the PA, "No one at the reception knows what is going on."
"What's happening?" asked Martha.
"Uh, an intrusion," said Trish , "It triggers a security lockdown. Kills most of the power. Stops the lifts. Seals the exits."
"He must be breaking through that door," I said..
"The stairs, come on!" called The Doctor, as he led us down.
As we ran, we heard the door crash open, "He's inside!" called Martha.
"We haven't got much time!" I said.
We got back to the reception and my uncle asked, "Tish! Is there another way out of here?"
"There's an exit in the corner, but it'll be locked now." she said.
I tossed Martha my sonic screwdriver, "Martha, Setting 54. Hurry!"
Martha went with Tish to unlock the door. The Doctor and I jumped on the platform in front of Lazarus's machine. "Listen to me!" said The Doctor, "Your people are in serious danger! You need to get out of here right now!"
"Don't be ridiculous," said a woman, "The biggest danger here is choking on an olive."
Then, we heard the sound of glass shattering and Lazarus appeared on the landing over looking the party, before leaping down onto the reception floor. Everyone ran for the exits
Glass shatters and Lazarus appears on the landing above before leaping down to the reception floor. Martha and Tish rush to open the door as everyone runs for the exits. I heard Leo tell his mom to get back and watched he was hit by a table the monster sent flying. Lazarus closed in on the woman who wouldn't believe The Doctor and she just stands there and screamed., "No! Get away from her!" screamed my uncle. I turned my head into his chest. All I heard was the sound of her being sucked dry before her shell fell to the floor.
I turned around and saw the monster go towards Mrs. Jones and Leo, "Lazarus! Leave them alone!" I shouted.
The monster turned toward us and I saw Martha come and take her mom and brother to safety, "What's the point if you can't control it? The mutation's too strong. Killing those people won't help you." said my uncle.
"You're a fool, a vain old man who thought he could defy Nature. Only Nature got you back, didn't she?" I yelled, "You're a joke, Lazarus! A footnote in the history of failure!" Then, the Doctor and I ran out of the reception hall and through the hallways with the monster hot on our heels. "I knew I should have worn flats tonight!"
We ran into a service corridor filled with all sorts of piped. We creped through quietly. As we walked Lazarus hissed at us, "It's no good, Doctor. You can't stop me."
"Is that the same arrogance you had when you swore nothing had gone wrong with your device?" asked my uncle.
"The arrogance is yours. You can't stand in the way of progress."
"You call feeding on innocent people progress? You're delusional!" I shouted.
"It is a necessary sacrifice," he responded.
"That's not your decision to make," said my uncle.
Just then the lights came back on. "Peek-a-boo." said Lazarus.
We looked up and saw the monster on the ceiling, "Oh, hello…" said my uncle. Then we ran out of the room. We entered a lab and my uncle jumped on one of the tables and fiddled with the battery of a light fixture. I went around turning on all the gas jets. We ducked down when we heard Lazarus come in. "More hide-and-seek, Doctor? How disappointing. Why don't you come out and face me?" he asked.
"Have you looked in the mirror lately?" I asked as we stood up, "Why would I wanna face that, hmm?"
We ran out of the room with my uncle turning on a light switch as we left. We were blown forward by the force of the explosion behind us. We got up and started to run again. We ran around a corner and ran into Martha, "What are you doing here?" I asked.
"I'm returning this," she said as she handed me my sonic screwdriver, "I thought you might need it."
"How did you-?" asked my uncle.
"I heard the explosion," interrupted Martha, "Guessed it was you two."
"We blasted Lazarus."
"Did you kill him?" she asked.
Just then we heard Lazarus come crashing down the hall.
"I think we just annoyed him…" I said, then we started running again.
We ended up back in the reception room, and Martha asked, "What now? We've just gone 'round in a circle!"
Just then Lazarus burst in and we head for the machine, "We can't lead him outside," I said.
"Come on, get in." said my uncle as he opened the door.
We got inside and found it to be very cramped, "Are we hiding?" asked Martha.
"No, But he knows we're in here," I said.
"This is his masterpiece," said The Doctor. I'm betting he won't destroy it, not even to get at us."
"But we're trapped!" said Martha.
"Well, yeah, that's a slight problem."
"You mean neither one of you have a plan?!"
"Yes, the plan was to get inside here!"
"Then what?"
"Well…" I said, "Then either my uncle or I would come up with another plan."
"In your own time, then," said Martha as she rolled her eys.
The Doctor gave me a look then he tried reaching in his pocket to get his sonic screwdriver, "Hey!" said Martha.
"Sorry, sorry, sorry." he said as he got it out, "Here we are."
"What're you gonna do with that?" she asked.
"Improvise," he said as he slid down slowly to the floor and popped open a panel.
"I still don't understand where that thing came from. Is it alien?" asked Martha.
"No, for once it's strictly human in origin," I said.
"Human? How can it be human?"
"Probably from dormant genes in Lazarus's DNA. The energy field in this thing must have reactivated them. And it looks like they're becoming dominant."
"So it's a throwback."
"Some option that evolution rejected for you millions of years ago, but the potential is still there. Locked away in your genes, forgotten about until Lazarus unlocked it by mistake."
"It's like Pandora's box."
"Exactly."
Just then a blue light filled the capsule. "What's happening?" asked Martha.
"Sounds like he's switched the machine on," said my uncle.
"That's not good, is it?"
"Well, I was hoping it was gonna take him a little bit longer to work that out."
We heard the pillars on the outside of the machine start to turn. "I don't want to hurry you, but—" I said.
"I know, I know. Nearly done." said The Doctor.
"What're you doin'?" asked Martha.
"Trying to set the capsule to reflect energy rather than receive it."
"Will that kill him?"
"When he transforms, he's three times his size—cellular triplication—so he's spreading himself thin."
"We're gonna end up like him!"
"Just one more!" Just then we heard a bang and then the machine slowed to a stop.
The Doctor opened the door and we stepped out, "I thought we were gonna go through the blender then." said Martha.
I looked at my uncle, "It shouldn't have taken you that long just to reverse the polarity."
"I must be a bit out of practice," he said.
We saw Lazarus lying on the floor, naked, he was human again. "Oh God," said Martha, "He seems so…human again. It's kind of pitiful."
"Eliot saw that, too," I said, " 'This is the way the world ends, not with a bang, but with a whimper.'"
We watched from the steps of the lab as he paramedics came to take the body away. Tish came up to us, "She's here. Oh, she's all right." she said as she hugged Martha.
Just then, Martha's mom stormed over to us. The Doctor smiled and said, "Ah, Mrs. Jones, we still haven't finished out chat."
She didn't say anything she just slapped us both across the face, like we were The Three Stooges, "OW!" I said as I put my hand to my cheek, "What was that for?!" I shouted.
"Keep away from my daughter," she shouted back, "The both of you!"
"Mum, what are you doing?" asked Martha.
The Doctor puts his hand on his cheek, "All their mothers, every time."
"I can understand why she slapped you," I said, "But I didn't do anything!"
"They are dangerous! I've been told things," said Mrs. Jones.
"What are you talking about?" asked Martha.
"Look around you! Nothing but death and destruction!"
"This isn't their fault. They saved us, all of us!"
"It was Tish who invited everyone to this thing in the first place," said Leo, "I'd say technically, it's her fault."
Tish elbowed Leo in the side. Then there was a loud crash. The Doctor and I looked at each other and at Martha. Then, The Doctor and I started to run in the direction of the sound. We found the ambulance that took Lazarus body away. The rear doors were open and the medics inside were just husks. Martha and Tish join us as my uncle said, "Lazarus, back from the dead."
"We shouldn't be surprised," I said. My uncle took out his sonic and started to scan for Lazarus.
"Where's he gone?" asked Martha.
"That way. The church," said my uncle.
"Cathedral." said Tish, "It's Southwark Cathedral. He told me."
Once we were inside the cathedral, we started walking up the aisle. My uncle led the way with his sonic screwdriver held out in front of him. "Do you think he's in here?" asked Martha.
"Where would you go if you were looking for sanctuary?" I asked.
We moved forward through the empty cathedral to the open space behind the altar. We found Lazarus sitting there gasping, a red blanket from the ambulance wrapped around him. The Doctor and I walked in front of him while Martha and Tish stood back by the alter.
"I came here before. A lifetime ago," said Lazarus, "I thought I was going to die then. In fact, I was sure of it. I sat there, just a child…the sound of planes and bombs outside."
"The Blitz," said my uncle.
"You've read about it."
"I was there."
"You're too young."
"So are you."
Lazarus laughed but it turned to gasps of pain as he fights the mutation. The Doctor and I started to walk around him, every so often my uncle would look up. "In the morning, the fires had died, and I was still alive," said Lazarus, "I swore I'd never face death like that again. So defenseless. I would arm myself, fight back, defeat it."
"That's what you were trying to do today," I said.
"That's what I did today," replied Lazarus.
"What about the other people who died?"
"They were nothing. I changed the course of history."
"Any of them might have, too. History isn't made with equations… Facing death is part of being human. You can't change that."
"No, my dear. Avoiding death. That's being human. It's our strongest impulse, to cling to life with every fiber of being. I'm doing what everyone before me has tried to do. I've simply been more…successful." Lazarus groaned in pain as his body tried to change.
"Look at yourself!" shouted my uncle, "You're mutating! You've no control over it! You call that a success?"
"I call it progress. I'm more now that I was. More than just an ordinary human."
"There's no such thing as an ordinary human."
Lazarus groaned in pain, as he continued to fight the change. Martha walked up to us and whispered, "He's gonna change again at any minute."
"I know," said my uncle, "If I can get him up into the bell tower somehow, I've an idea that might work."
"Up there?"
The Doctor nodded. Then we started walking around him again
"You're so sentimental, Doctor," said Lazarus, he looked at the two of us "Maybe you are both older than you look."
"We're old enough to know that a longer life isn't always a better one," said The Doctor, "In the end, you just get tired. Tired of the struggle. Tired of losing everyone that matters to you. Tried of watching everything turn to dust." we squatted down next to Lazarus and my uncle continued, "If you live long enough, Lazarus, the only certainty left is that you end up alone."
I took my uncle hand and said telepathically, "Not if I have anything to say about it…" I squeezed his hand. He looked at me and smiled and squeezed back. Then he turned back to Lazarus.
"That's a price worth paying," replied the Professor.
"Is it?" asked my uncle.
Lazarus groaned as felt the change coming, "I will feed soon."
"We're not gonna let that happen," I said.
"You've not been able to stop me so far," he said.
"Leave him, Lazarus!" said Martha, "He's old and bitter. Thought you had a taste for fresher meat."
"Martha, no," said my uncle.
Lazarus snarls started to chase after Martha with Tish following her. "What are you doing?" asked Martha.
"Keeping you out of trouble!"
"Doctor! The tower!" said Martha as turned a corner and started to climb up to the upper level.
The Doctor and I heard Lazurus scream in pain. We looked at each other and knew he transformed again. We looked up at the upper level and my uncle asked, "Where are they?"
"Martha?!" I called out.
Just then, Martha peers out of one of the archways in the upper level, "Teddy! Doctor!"
"Take him to the top, the very top of the bell tower, d'you hear me?!" said my uncle.
"Up to the top! Then what?" she asked but she disappeared before we could answer.
"Come on…" said my uncle as he started to run toward the large pipe organ. We sat down at the keyboard and he pulled out his sonic, "Hypersonic sound waves. Inspired." He jammed it into a slot in the organ and we started to pull out all the stops. We heard a commotion coming from the bell tower and heard one of the girls scream. "I hope it's good acoustic in here." he said as he cracked his knuckles and started to play.
We heard the screams coming from the bell tower as The Doctor played more frantically. I took out my sonic screwdriver and pointed it at the volume control of the organ, "We need to turn this up to 11." I said. Then, he resumed playing.
After several moment we heard something land with a thud on the floor. The Doctor stopped and we looked down and Lazarus in human form on the floor, dead.
"Martha?!" called my uncle.
After no response, I called, "Martha?!"
"I'm okay! We're both okay!" said Martha. The Doctor and I both breathed a sigh of relief and then we went to go check on Lazarus. The Doctor kneeled by his body and closed his eyes. As he did the body became old again. We both knew that Lazarus was truly dead.
After that saw Martha and Tish come from the bell tower. We ran up to her and both gave her a hug. "I didn't know you could play?" she said.
"Oh, well, you know, if you hang around with Beethoven, you're bound to pick a few things up," said my uncle.
"Hmm, especially about playing loud," I said.
He leaned forward and said, "Sorry?"
I rolled my eyes and hit him on the shoulder. Martha laughed.
Later we were back at Martha's place. The Doctor unlocked the TARDIS and looked at Martha, "Something else that just kind of escalated, then."
"I can see a pattern developing. You should take more care in the future. And the past, and whatever other time period you find yourself in," she said.
"It's fun, though, isn't it?" I asked.
"Yeah." she said.
"So, what d'you say, one more trip?" asked my uncle.
"No. Sorry." she replied.
I was shocked, "What do you mean? I thought you liked it."
"I do, but I can't go on like this. 'One more trip.' It's not fair." she said.
"What're you talking about?" asked The Doctor.
"I don't want to be just a passenger anymore. Someone you take along for a treat. If that's how you still see me, well, I'd rather stay here."
"Okay, then. If that's what you want."
"Right. But we've already said good-bye once today so it's really best if you just go." The Doctor and I just looked at each other as Martha walked away from us. She looked over her shoulder. "What is it?"
"What? I said okay." said my uncle.
"Sorry?"
I rolled my eyes, "And I thought my uncle was thick… He said you could come!"
Martha ran over to us and hugged us, "Oh, thank you! Thank you!" and laughed.
"Well, you were never really just a passenger, were you?" said my uncle as he lead her inside and we started off on our next adventure…
