Chapter Fifty-Eight: Fair Warning
Touya held Kagome's hand as they sat through the final speeches of their graduation.
He'd spoken to his father the day before and they'd managed to come to a compromise. He could attend their graduation but in exchange he would not be permitted to go to the wedding. That was the only way the doctors would approve of Rei's temporary venture outside the hospital. She was given permission to leave tomorrow morning and would stay the night at their house before she'd have to return. A nurse would be in attendance just in case to monitor her.
Shouto had been ecstatic when he found out so they would all be leaving tonight to head to their home in Fukuoka after they had lunch with Endeavor. It was his father's one request and he couldn't bring himself to deny him that much.
Touya sank his fingers into the spaces between Kagome's.
It felt like just yesterday that they first met. She'd become such a fixed part of his life so quickly that it was difficult for him to imagine what things were like before her. All the anger and loneliness he'd felt had subsided to a mere blip. He still hadn't forgiven his dad or Kikyou for that matter, but they no longer bothered him like they used to.
"Since we're having seafood catered tomorrow, you feel like hitting up an Izakaya after this?" Honestly he he was in the mood for a light atmosphere.
His academy training would start up a week from now and he had five to six months to graduate. Afterwards he'd have another year of probation. The finish line was in sight but he wanted to celebrate just this one victory.
His fiancée shot him a smile, "That sounds amazing right now. I could go for some sukiyaki."
The rest of the graduation ceremony dragged on for what felt like hours. Name after name was called and he heard the overwhelming cheer of his family when his was finally moved. Touya flushed in embarrassment as his father's boastful cheers emanated over the entire crowd.
Seriously, did he have to be so loud about everything?
Kagome followed in behind him, subtly trying to stifle her laughter as his siblings outdid their father that time. It seemed as if they were trying to turn this into a competition.
They filed out of the stadium and met up with his family. His siblings were the first to launch themselves at him. Shouto threw his arms around his waist as the boy hugged him for all that he was worth. Fuyumi clung into Kagome as tears streamed down his sister's face. Natsuo merely laughed at the ridiculous image they all made before Touya forcefully pulled him into the hug as well.
Endeavor stood off towards the side awkwardly. His expression was scrunched the same way it'd been when they'd gotten engaged. A look of pride had overtaken his features while he appeared to be struggling to hold back his tears.
"Hey old timer, if you cry I'm taking your credit card and buying half the town." Touya shot at him.
He wasn't quite ready to open up to his father yet. Seeing him cry just made him feel weird in a way that was uncomfortable. So it was simply easier to bully him for the time being.
Jaken, Rin and Sesshoumaru finally approached. The child threw herself against Kagome while Jaken was dabbing tears from his eyes. Sesshoumaru didn't speak a word but a small yet proud smile pulled at the corners of his lips.
"We're heading to an izakaya. Kagome wants sukiyaki." Touya announced to his family, "That sound good to the rest of you?"
Everyone all nodded in agreement.
When they arrived at the restaurant they were shown to their own room. His father had ordered a carafe of sake while the rest of them stuck to water, tea or in Shouto's case, ramune soda. Much to his surprise, Sesshoumaru turned down the offer of alcohol. Perhaps he stayed away from it due to his family's issues of abusing the substance.
"So we're heading to the house after this?" Fuyumi gushed in her excitement.
Kagome rested against his arm as he spoke, "We have to run by the manor to pick up Ohagi but yes."
He was looking forward to it.
Having all of his family in one place and staying the night. It sounded like fun.
His father had yet to even see the house but he didn't mind that fact. Whenever the man earned his forgiveness, only then would he be permitted inside his home.
"Mom will arrive in the morning. There should be enough rooms for you guys. Although," Touya shifted to glance towards Sesshoumaru and Jaken. "Are you three staying over as well? If so we might have to get a couple of futons for you."
They had five bedrooms. He and Kagome would naturally take the master suite. His mother had the room closest to the ocean with the best view. Natsuo and Shouto had two adjacent rooms that shared a single bathroom together. Then Fuyumi had the room that faced the street. They'd offered to let her take one of the other rooms but she insisted that it was perfect. She wasn't in her room much so it'd keep her from staying inside too much.
If Sesshomaru, Jaken and Rin stayed over then Rin could stay with Fuyumi in her room. Sesshoumaru and Jaken would be harder to place.
"We'll be staying in a hotel nearby." Sesshoumaru offered after a short moment. "The house won't be able to hold everyone. Incidentally, I've also booked your friends rooms there as well. They'll be arriving first thing in the morning."
Kagome nodded at her guardian's response.
Touya watched as his forget looked between the two of them in confusion. He could understand the reaction. Sesshoumaru hardly looked old enough to be her brother let alone her legal guardian. So seeing him act the part of a father must've been jarring for him.
"That will make things easier." Touya grinned as their food was finally ready. "I hope you guys know what you're getting into."
Staying over on the night of the wedding itself was treacherous waters for his siblings.
Natsuo blinked before the realization hit.
"Oh come on! Mom will be there!" His brother shook his head, "You can wait one day!"
Touya tried to make a quip but felt Kagome's hand grasping onto his shirt, pulling his attention away from his middle brother.
"Touya!" She hissed through her embarrassment. "Our family is here!"
Sesshoumaru gave him a baleful look while Jaken appeared scandalized. His own dad was starting to resemble a ripened tomato.
"Hey, I'm just giving them a fair warning in case they want to buy themselves some noise cancelling headphones." He laughed at his siblings dismay.
He then curled his arms around his fiancée's waist, "We've waited three years. I'd say that, that's long enough. At least consider yourselves warned."
Shouto then looked up from his meal, "Does this mean that I'll get to be an uncle?"
Touya laughed when Kagome buried her face in her hands in embarrassment.
"We'll see egg-head."
