The next morning, Tara found herself writing on the Bullpen's whiteboard with a blue marker. When she finished writing and taping pictures to the board, she put the lid of the marker back on, turned to her teammates and started:
"So I did my research, and hacked into Mr. and Mrs. Ray's computer; there is definitely proof that they were engaging in identity theft…particularly phishing. There were suspicious emails created, harmful files, codes of viruses, a list of credit card and security numbers, and lists of target's names and emails that mostly belonged to elderly folk."
"What was the scam?" Bobby asked.
Tara replied, "The target would be sent an email saying that there was a refund on a transaction they recently made. They would click the link that would lead them to the "refund." Once that link is clicked, all personal information from that computer is taken. For them, they cared about credit card numbers; that's how they were able to afford to pay off their debts and buy new stuff."
"So, the girl was right," Jack muttered.
"To a point," Tara replied, "I was able to get the couple's neighbor's phone number, and I talked to them. I asked them about the Rays and what they were really like? They said that they like to keep to themselves and that they aren't well versed in technology." She then turned to Myles. "Did you find anything on Diana?"
Myles, looking and feeling better today, responded, "I briefly looked at her profile and didn't see anything that aroused suspicion, or told me that she was a genius delinquent. So, this whole scenario is either she's clever and this is a set up, or there is somebody else involved in the scam that only the parents know."
Dimitrius said, "Did anyone do some digging on the brother? Just because he has a shady relationship with his parents doesn't mean that he's out of the picture."
Bobby replied, "I did, and I discovered something interesting. He owns his own ranch, but he's not a full time worker there."
This was interesting indeed. Tara crossed her arms. "Really?"
Bobby responded, "Yes. He is a contracted IT technician that is capable of working at all of the banks in the city. He knows how to use computers and use them well."
Sue asked, "Does he have a criminal record?"
Bobby shook his head. "No, he's clean, but something tells me that if he's a computer genius in the family, and his mom and dad aren't, that he is also involved in this scam."
Myles said, "But that doesn't make any logical sense. If Devin and George hate each other, then why would Devin want to help them scam innocent people out of their hard earned money?"
Jack shrugged. "Maybe they're putting aside their differences. He might hate his dad, but he doesn't hate his mom."
Sue said, "Desperate times call for desperate measures; he might be helping them save the ranch. Diana said to Tara and I earlier that she believes her parents are capable of doing illegal things in order to benefit their lives. And like you said, Myles, I don't understand why Devin would want to help them after they kicked him out of the house?"
Dimitrius mentioned, "Maybe they're blackmailing him? Or he's having financial trouble himself that Diana doesn't know about. It sounds like there's a lot of secrets being kept from Diana here. Okay, I think we have a strong case to get a warrant and search the parent's computer at their home. Once we bust them, we can see if Devin is involved in this case. We'll have to make sure to bring a rifle or two."
Sue said, "Wait…are guns really necessary?"
Dimitrius answered, "We're going onto the property of a rancher who is desperate. And he will do whatever is necessary to stop us, which means that he could shoot us. It's happened before to people who get their land taken away by the government, or rich bureaucrats."
Jack assured, "It's just a precaution, Sue. I doubt we'll be using them."
Myles was on his computer, examining the profile of Diana Ray again. Something about her was bugging him inside. She originally said that she liked her parents, but didn't want to live with them. However, she knew they were making lots of money now and providing for both her and the farm, so, wouldn't she be supportive of her parent's shenanigans rather than turning them in? She said she had morals she followed, but still, something sounded fishy. Why fix something when it's working?
"Hey…um…what's your…uh…Thomas," Myles called from his desk. Levi put his paws on Sue's legs. She looked up, and noticed Myles waving at her. She went to him.
"Yes, Myles?"
He asked, "Do you have Diana Ray's phone number? There's a couple of questions I would like to ask her about the relationship between her and her brother. There's got to be more to her story."
"Did you find anything?"
"No, but…the reason for her wanting to turn in her parents comes off as an overreaction to me. I mean, we all get tired of our parents at some point in our lives, but there are other ways to leave if you want to go live somewhere else. There's something more going on, and I know it has something to do with her brother. We need to bring her back in for questioning."
Sue said, "Yes, I have her number, but she's deaf remember?"
"Oh…yes."
"I'll text and ask her to come in as soon as she can."
Luckily, Diana was in the area, and she was able to come to the office at 1:30pm. Myles, Tara and Sue brought her into a boardroom to start a new round of questioning. After everyone was comfortable, Sue started by signing to Diana, and talking at the same time:
"This is Myles. He's helping us with your case, and he has a few questions that he'd like to ask you."
Myles said to Sue while watching Diana, "Tell her the information we found about her parents."
Sue signed and spoke, "We searched for your parents in our database. They both have a criminal history, but none of their crimes correlate to fraud or any other type of cyber crime. It was odd to us, so we talked to your neighbors - the Tavares family - about your parents, and they told us that they aren't very good at working technology; they can barely work a cell phone. Because scams like this require knowledge of a computer, we have reason to believe that there is someone helping them."
Cutting to the chase, Myles said, "We have to talk about your brother."
Sue signed what Myles said to Diana.
Diana looked shocked. She then signed back, "Talk about my brother? Why?"
Myles continued, "I'm not sure if you're aware, but Devin is a contracted IT worker for banks around Washington. We called his buddies at work, and they told us that he's a genius when it comes to computers, and that he likes to code things as a hobby."
"Okay? And?"
Myles sighed, "We believe that your brother is connected to your parent's affairs."
Diana quickly responded. She denied, "Devin? Helping my parents? No way."
Myles continued, "Diana, how well do you know your brother? You're fourteen and he's nineteen; a five year gap is quite excessive when it comes to siblings and their relationship status? I would know because my eldest brother is seven years older, and we don't talk."
Diana looked offended. She answered, "We see each other once a month."
Myles rolled his eyes. "We know that, but do you actually know him? For example, do you know who his friends are? What kind of crowd he associates with?"
Diana said, "What kind of questions are these? Devin and I have a close and solid relationship, and he would never get involved with our parents."
Myles shook his head. This girl was lying about something. "Diana, be honest here. What's the real reason that you wanted to turn your parents in? We're not stupid. You said to us the previous day that even though you'd prefer to live with your brother, you and your parents have a good standing relationship. Yes, they are involved in cyber crime, but if it was to save their ranch, wouldn't you want to side with them?"
Diana scrunched her nose. She answered, "When I see something wrong, I tell somebody about it…whether they are my parents, or a random stranger. A crime is a crime and there should be consequences."
Tara then said and signed, "What if you knew that your brother was engaging in crime with your parents? Would you snitch on him?"
Diana quickly signed back, "My brother is not involved. That's impossible. He hasn't talked to them in over a year. They also hate each other's guts; especially him and dad."
Myles said, "There is an accomplice in this crime, and they are familiar with technology. Unfortunately, the first suspect we have in mind is Devin. Maybe he's doing this behind your back for his own reason. And if it's not him, do you know if your parents know someone who's good with computers?"
Diana shrugged. "Not really?"
Myles exhaled. This was starting to go in circles.
Sue said and signed, "Thank you, Diana. I'll lead you out of the building."
Once Diana and Sue left, Tara turned to Myles, and said, "She doesn't think her brother is involved. I believe her. Should we go pay a visit to Devin's work, and engage in an interview?"
Myles replied, "You and Sue go. But I will be keeping an eye on her. She's hiding something."
And so Sue and Tara paid a visit to Devin's place of work to meet with the man himself. He was an IT worker for the banks around Washington. Unfortunately for them, Devin wasn't at the office today, but they met with a coworker of his named Clint. He was a short and young man who looked unsure of himself, but he was more than willing to be interviewed by the FBI.
Tara started, "Clint, how long have you worked here with Devin?"
Clint, a tad overwhelmed by their presence, responded, Oh - I've known Devin for a while. We were both hired at the same time. He's a brilliant computer scientist. He does a lot of programming and he's good at coding too. It's a hobby of his."
"Very interesting," said Sue.
Clint asked, "Did Devin do something wrong? I mean, he must've if the FBI are here."
Tara answered, "He's a prime suspect in a cyber crime investigation. The crime is phishing, and stealing credit card numbers. Is Devin capable of misusing his powers?"
"No…I…don't think Devin is capable of doing the things you mentioned. Why would he do that?"
Sue answered, "To save his parents from bankruptcy."
Cling laughed. "That's a good joke. There's no way he'd help them with anything. He hates his parents and they hate him."
Tara asked, "Have you met his little sister? If so, what's their relationship like? Are they close?"
"Diana? Oh yes. They don't see each other often, because of his parents, but when they are together, they're inseparable. I also know that she wants to live with him, and he told me that he'd gladly take her in if given the chance."
Sue then questioned, "Does Devin have any financial problems of his own?"
Clint said, "Well - he's in danger of losing his ranch. Business is slow over there, and he doesn't make enough money here to sustain both him and his ranch." A pause. Then, "It was odd. I did see him come here with a nice new pair of boots the other day. I didn't know that he could afford those when he's barely able to keep the heat on."
Tara and Sue looked at each other. Devin was definitely involved, and it sounded like it could be voluntary rather than influenced via blackmail.
Chapter 5 is next…
