AN: short chapter. The very last chapter is next...
Two weeks later…
Bobby was typing away at his desk, hip deep in electronic paperwork. 25% of his job was catching the bad guys; the other 75% was sitting at a desk, wasting the day away with reports and filing. He was somewhat excited that the bullpen received new computers less than a week ago, for the bureau was finally connecting the company to a larger server where they could finally go paperless for the rest of his days as an FBI agent. The hardest part was the transition; old paper files weren't to be shredded until they were imputed into the database, and unfortunately, since he had free time, he was forced to be one of those agents to carry out this duty.
Halfway through the morning, Bobby looked at the desk where Myles usually sat and stared at the empty chair. Since Elke left, they hadn't needed an extra body. The reason was that the team didn't need one until a serious case was assigned to them. Believe it or not, Elke had only been with them for two weeks, and he missed her; despite his disdain for her in the beginning. It's not that he hated her for the sake of it, but because he was angry at the bureau for tossing Myles aside so easily, and she just so happened to take the brunt of his anger. Luckily, he was able to put aside his feelings, apologize to the agent, and give her credit where credit was due despite her mistakes. He missed her…but he missed Myles more. He was devastated when Myles had informed their chief that he was taking another month's leave of absence. He was happy that Myles was finally seeing past his stubbornness, and on the road to getting better for the sake of his team, but he felt bad for causing this mess in the first place. He hadn't seen Myles since he arrived back from Lake Moomaw and wouldn't for another month due to him flying out of the country with Anne. For now, he just needed to carry on with his boring life, start spending more time rekindling his relationship with his former ex girlfriend, and maybe help Jack and Sue with the remainder of their wedding plans.
Sue was on the computer, also transitioning hard copy files into electronic ones, but she was taking a break, searching the web. Today was the day her, Tara, Amanda and Lucy were going to pick up Sue's wedding dress for its first fitting. At the same bridal shop, she was searching on their online store for bridesmaids dresses that Lucy and Amanda could try on…again. The previous ones Tara discovered weeks ago looked great online, but different when worn in person; it didn't quite fit Sue's vision. Then, Sue looked up and saw Bobby still looking at Myles' side of the desk whilst tapping his fingers on his own. She said, getting his attention, "Bobby."
"Hmm?"
"Are you alright? Are you well?"
Bobby shrugged. "I miss Elke…and Myles…now that neither of them are coming back…" he trailed off.
Sue rolled her eyes. Bobby could be just as overdramatic as the rest of her coworkers sometimes. "And it's okay to miss your co-workers. Elke still works in the building; nothing is saying that you can't drop by her department and say 'hello', and even though Myles isn't in the country right now, God will take care of him, help him get stronger, and he'll return to us. The guy is too stubborn not to come back to work…he just wants to make sure that he doesn't detriment the team."
"I still feel bad. It's my fault to begin with. I allowed Jack and the bureau to put Myles on paid suspension rather than give him a month to see if he could put himself together."
Sue shook her head. She assured the man, "Bobby, I saw Myles while he was in Lake Moomaw, because…you know…he was being a…well I have a word for that, but I'd rather not say it. He wasn't in his right mind. You, Jack and chief made the right decision. I'm afraid that if you wouldn't have put Myles on paid suspension, he would've self-destructed and be in a mental institution instead of his home."
Levi, beside her, whined.
Sue looked at Levi. "Maybe you can keep him company, huh?"
Levi then took the initiative to go to Myles' desk and hop into the empty chair to keep Bobby company for an hour or two. Bobby commented, "My, my Myles, what a big snout you have?" Levi barked.
Later that night, Jack and Sue were sharing a bottle of wine at the dining room table. They sat beside each other, looking over one another's shoulder as they booked their wedding in Bermuda. After going through the list of who they were inviting to the wedding, they concluded that their wedding would consist of twenty-five bodies; most of them immediate family and friends. Then, after a couple of hours of booking the venue and other items, they decided to also book their honeymoon in the same location. They searched 'things to do' on travel advisory, and through a process of elimination had a general itinerary of what the remainder of their stay would contain.
When they were finished for the night, they moved their bodies and wine glasses to the bedroom, and cuddled in each other's arms. In the midst of the quiet, they both heard the roaring of the wind outside as another snowstorm hurled its way into the city. Jack said, "It's the weekend, but I don't want to wake up early and shovel snow. I just want you to be in my arms forever."
Sue gawked into her fiancé's eyes, and got lost in them. She was in a trance, and all she could say was, "Me too." A pause…then, "keep me safe."
"I always will," Jack responded before kissing Sue on the lips, and hugging her tighter. "I just want to say that…I'm so proud of you."
"For what?"
"For everything that you've done for Myles…for me. You take the initiative and care for people, and I love a woman that takes the initiative and has sympathy - even empathy - for others…even if it has consequences."
Sue nodded. "I promise not to keep secrets from you anymore."
"I concur. Regardless, I can't wait for you to be mine forever. Now, let's sleep tight. We have plenty more to plan in the morning...and plenty of snow to shovel." Then, they kissed for a while before falling asleep in each other's arms. There was no point in setting an alarm now.
