Cinder observed the smoke coming from the city. Arms crossed and an unhappy frown on her face. Emerald at her side observed with dread, while Mercury looked on with discomfort and annoyance. Her eyes wandered to the Bullheads being loaded with students that went from first years like the Invincible Girl's team to second years like Coco Adel and Velvet Scarlatina—Two other possible obstacles in getting the power she desires.
Emerald looked at her, brows furrowed in worry. "Is that… What I think it is…?" She asked.
"It certainly looks like it," Mercury scoffed. Say what you want about the son of Marcus Black, but he wanted a job well done like his father.
"But that's days away!" Emerald exclaimed; her eyes wide with panic. "It was supposed to occur during the festival, along with everything else!"
"Emerald, calm yourself!" Cinder snapped, scowling at the girl. She cowered and lowered her head, muttering a low 'sorry' from beneath her breath. Ignoring her, Cinder focused her eyes back to the smoke. "And yes, it was supposed to happen then. But it seems there's been a change of plans…"
"What do we do then?" Mercury asked, arms crossed.
Cinder turned and walked towards the Bullheads. "We assess the situation, see if at the least the purpose of the operation was made…" Her left eye burned as she clenched her fists. "Then we find the one responsible for not heeding to my orders."
She could hear her two subordinates gulp in fear. Good. At least those two knew to not act out of place. Time to get to the bottom of this.
The claw of an Ursa broke through the steel of one of the train's cabins, ripping away the wall as if it was made of paper. Its red eyes boring into its insides, wanting to find any pray to tear apart.
Sad for the poor thing. All it found was a canon to its forehead and its brain blown out. Its body slowly dissipating as it fell into the cabin.
Felix emerged from the whole the Grimm made and observed the scene in front of him. Grimm of all sizes and shapes, from Taijitus to Beowolves stalked the main plaza of the city, citizens running and chaos altogether was what he could see.
'Still tame compared to Reach…' Felix thought, a bitter taste on his mouth. 'Mission accomplished I suppose.'
However, he made the mistake of lowering his guard. A fist smashed against the side of his face and sent him down from where he stood over the cabin and down to the floor.
He looked up to see an enraged Nicholas glaring down at him and jumping with his axe held high. Felix rolled out of the way and got back to his feet, taking out one of his knives and ready to engage the Huntsman in combat.
"Look at what you've done!" Nicholas spat, gesturing to all the Grimm. "How many will die because of this!"
"A whole lot more if you just keep attacking me rather than help your precious students," Felix said with a sarcastic tone and pointing right at the middle of the plaza, where Team RWBY was surrounded by Grimm. "Poor things about to become snacks."
Nicholas sneered at him, but luckily Felix knew his kind. Heroes. First the innocent, then personal vendettas. The blond man turned around and charged head first into the crowd of monsters, his aura glowing and allowing him to jump over them to reunite with his students.
Felix scoffed, one problem less then. Now he has to get out of here before the Grimm decide to take a bite of him too, he wasn't exactly the epitome of joy and positivism right now. He had to get out of here and—
"Agh!" Something struck the side of his face; he lost his balance momentarily and looked around. "What the—Ugh!" Another strike, then another to his stomach. His body spammed out of control with every strike he received.
'Locus!' He thought in realization. His treacherous partner was attacking him. 'Now of all times?!'
The HUD of his helmet told him his aura was at sixty-six percent. A lot of it must have been taken from the crash. He brandished one of his knives and took a page from Agent Washington's book. He dropped his aura and cut his hand open and waited.
Another strike impacted him in the sides, and Felix whipped his hand out. The blood spraying and landing on the target. Locus growled and leaped back, whipping away the blood from his helmet. Felix could tell he was glaring and he was doing pretty much the same.
"What the fuck are you DOING?!" Felix growled, going for his gun only to freeze when Locus was faster and aimed his SAW at him.
"This… All this death and chaos," Locus' voice was laced with anger and hate. "We have unleashed the equivalent to the Covenant into innocent people. All for what? Some credits."
"We agreed to—" A round was fired straight at his chest, making him stagger backwards. His aura going down by a sizeable amount. "Agh, fuck!"
"I know what we agreed to. And I was a fool for considering it," Locus marched forward. He turned around, giving a shot to an incoming Grimm, blowing its head off. Felix couldn't take on the chance to charge, for Locus quickly aimed his gun at him. "You are never going to change, Felix. And this world… sending kids to fight their wars, the discrimination that gave birth to the White Fang…"
"… It was you," Felix realized, snarling. "You are the reason Team RWBY was there. You sold us out, you fucking rat!"
"I told them of their plans, and they send children!" Locus growled. "And just a single capable person. The civilians don't deserve what is happening to them, they are innocent, but it's clear its criminals like Cinder are not the only problem if their guardians are this ineffective."
"You self-righteous fucking piece of shit…!" Felix growled. "Is this really the fucking time?! You are in much danger as I am surrounded by Grimm! We have to get out of here first!"
As if responding to his negativity a pack of Ursas made their way towards them. Locus held the shotgun with one hand and took another pistol—A magnum that Felix realized belonged to him, much to his infinite ire—and shot with expertise at every single one of them with a marksman ability straight into their foreheads. Their bodies slumping and disintegrating.
Felix swallowed a lump as he stared at Locus with fear. This… this is what he always dreaded, deep down. As much as it pained him to admit it, Locus was always better than him when it came to being a soldier in almost every aspect. And now, those abilities have been turned against him, and here he was now: defenseless, with just his knives and without the chance to use his shield.
"I'm sorry it has to be this way, Felix," Locus said coldly. "But the boy you once were is clearly gone and dead… only leaving a man broken by war like you."
Felix snarled at him from beneath the helmet. Looking around, hoping that something would come up his way. But he couldn't see Roman anywhere, and Team RWBY was too busy fighting off the Grimm to pay attention to an enemy dispute.
However, he forgot about another element. One that ended up saving him. Pretty much like he was before, Locus was struck by an invisible force from behind. Then proceeded to be attacked in all directions from said force, in the process dropping Felix's magnum.
The man didn't wasted time and ran for his weapon, taking advantage of Locus' distraction. He unloaded the holster and reloaded it with one full and aimed it at Locus, who was still struggling against the unseen attacker.
Much to Felix misfortune, this strike of luck didn't last. Soon Locus regained control of the situation, adapting quick and probably using the motion trackers to detect whoever was attacking. He gave a shot and struck his target, revealing a startled Neopolitan as her camouflage was broken in a thousand shards. The blow of the shot sending her backwards.
Felix got up and caught her before she could fall on her back. "You, okay?" He asked, receiving a silent nod in response. "Good, because we need to take this guy out."
Locus stood still watching them silently, before his form vanished in front of the two. Felix growled, his helmet's trackers showing how the man was getting away from the center of the chaos they unleashed. "Coward…! Get back here you fuck!" He roared, rising his gun and firing in the direction where his former partner was getting. "Give me back my sword and face me like a man!"
However, before he could continue his angry attack, a hand grasped his wrist making him lower the gun. He glared angrily at Neo, who gave him a blank look and a shake of her head. "What?! You telling me to let him get away!?"
She nodded, looking completely serious. She extended a hand gesturing around them. To the Grimm surrounding them, and that's when Felix noticed the sounds of machinery, looking up to see Bullheads coming down, to deal with the threat of the Grimm and to apprehend White Fang and criminals alike.
"Crap, we have to scatter…" Felix said, clenching his hands in frustration. "You're right then. How do we get out without the Grimm chasing us? And what about Torchwick?"
Neo grabbed his hand and her Semblance washed over them. He didn't feel any different, but he guessed the girl was using the same trick she did before to attack Locus. "Okay… and Torchwick?"
A sour look crossed her face, she shook her head and tugged him forward indicating that she wanted to leave as soon as possible. Felix just blinked in confusion, this girl was almost Torchwick's shadow and the man acted like a father to her. Why were they leaving… It clicked a second later.
"It's part of the plan, isn't it?" He asked, though he was pretty certain of the answer. "Torchwick has to be captured for a reason, right?"
Neo turned to glare at him. Though it was clear that the glare wasn't aimed at him specifically and more on the fact that she had to leave the bowler-hat wearing criminal behind. It seems the whole father-daughter thing they had going wasn't as one sided as Felix thought.
"Fine, got it, not touching that nerve again," Neo gave a silent huff and rolled her eyes. Gripping Felix's arm tighter in the progress and making him wince and slap her hand slightly. "Hey, hey! Watch the nails, girl!"
She rolled her eyes and made a pouty face. Felix just shook his head; this girl could go from murderous to childish in the blink of an eye.
Looking around, the sight wasn't pretty. Felix had to look away for the scenery was something really familiar. He had seen scenarios like that when the Covenant attacked colonies of the UNSC, though they were usually sent to try and reclaim them in the front lines. Only for them to turn around and run with their tails between the legs and wait for Spartans to do the job. And in some cases, not even they would be able to do much of a difference.
'Like Reach.' Felix thought, shaking his head he tried to push those memories away. 'Welp, this ain't my problem anymore. I have to get on Cindy's good side after Team Rwby just decided to come back and be a pain in the ass again! And now Locus has gone AWOL, who knows what that bastard will do on his own. He could go straight to the authorities and exposes us. We'll have to mobilize the White Fang and locate him, hope the poor guys don't die a horrible death at his hands and then—Fuck!'
Felix eyes widened as he looked around and saw that while the members of Team RWBY and Nicholas were busy, a big Taijitu was crawling towards a certain red-cape wearing girl. Who was distracted fighting a pack of Creeps and Ursas.
He didn't think. His body moved on his own. Detaching himself from Neo he dashed towards the Taijitu with his gun drawn and a couple of knives on his hand as a yell erupted from his mouth:
"DAMN IT, CRATER FACE! LOOK OUT!"
They were surrounded, backed into a corner. All around the red eyes of the Grimm glared at them with hunger and anger as it was usual. Ruby swallowed a lump; civilians have escaped but there were others who didn't and they had barely scraped the numbers of the monsters around them.
When a king Taijitu lunged down at them to take a bite, something struck the back of its head knocking it down. Nicholas had stabbed the back of its head with the edge of his axe, ripping it off and rejoining the girls. "Everyone alright?"
"Yes," Yang said between pants. "For now."
"Where are Torchwick and the others?" Blake asked, looking frantic for an answer.
Nicholas stood in front of them. "Not the priority right now, Belladona," He said, glaring at the Grimm surrounding them. "Listen. We have to keep their attention on us, they are still focused on the plaza due to the negativity lingering. Kill as many as you can and avoid them getting out of the perimeter!"
Ruby stared at the man with admiration before cocking Crescent Rose and nodding. "Yes, sir!"
The team scattered, Ruby stabbed her baby on the floor, in the middle of a group of Ursas. The Grimm lunged at her, and she counted on that. Grabbing the shaft of her weapon she spun around, throwing kicks at fast speed and knocking them back.
She unplugged her weapon from the floor and aimed it at the knocked Grimm, shooting at them and piercing their softer parts. Killing them in a burst of smoke and making her smile in self-satisfaction; finally! A victory after a long stroke of defeats since yesterday!
The thought was premature however, when she heard a yell and turned back to see a yellow figure crashing on the floor after being attacked by a murder of Nevermores. Her eyes widening in worry as she knew who it was: "YANG!"
Her sister's aura was just recovering after fighting in the train, 'To rescue me…' She thought guiltily. She dashed, activating her Semblance to get to her, only for a pack of Beowolves to block her way. She scowled at them and swung her scythe at them, hacking down their arms and cleaving another in half.
She looked to where Yang was and deflated in relief when she saw her sister getting back to her feet, Semblance active and punching a car towards a pack of Creeps. Even weakened her sister was just awesome like that, and as she looked around, she saw her teammates blasting and freezing the Grimms around her.
Her eyes wandered when she saw a Grimm sailing through the sky, its body dissipating as its descent. She followed its initial trajectory to see Mister Arc chopping and backhanding and just straight up YEETING Grimms from left to right. His body glowing every time he had to activate his Semblance.
THIS WAS AWESOME! Things were finally coming up their way.
Creeps and Ursas surrounded her, growling at her. She smirked and charged Gravity Dust before blasting towards them. Just like back in Patch when they ambushed her when visiting her mom, she cleaved their torsos in half and sent them packing. She stopped, smiling as the work was done and regaining her breath.
Her smile faded when a large shadow loomed over her, she turned around to see a Taijitu looming over her. Mouth ready to bite her down, and in her impression, she didn't have time to prepare to reload and shot it down.
And then…
"DAMN IT, CRATER FACE! LOOK OUT!"
Two blasts struck the back of the Taijitu and something then jumped onto the back of its head. The beast roared but soon it went limp and collapsed on the floor. Ruby took a step back and looked up, her eyes wide.
Felix—The bad guy, not her friend—was there. His knives were dug deep into the back of the Taijitu's skull. He unplugged them and looked at her. His face hidden by the ever-present helmet on his head.
Her hands shook. She opened her mouth, which was trembling from a different array of emotions. "W-What did you called me…?"
Crater Face. That was the nickname Jaune gave her in exchange of her calling him Vomit Boy when they met in Beacon's schoolyard. No one else knew that nickname, it was something silly Jaune only used when they were alone. How does he, a man who also sounds like Jaune, know that.
Could it be… It couldn't be… Could it…?
"Jau…" Before she could question him, call out to him, anything, he vanished. Suddenly he was there and the next it was like something covered him. His armor? Like with the green guy?
Just what was going on here?!
"Ruby?!" She turned around, and saw Team NPR arriving in the scene. With Pyrrha leading the charge. "Are you alright?!"
"Pyrrha?" She shook her head, vanishing the thoughts of Jaune-Felix-Whoever was under the helmet for now. "What are you guys doing here? And your mission?"
"We were heading out later today, but then THIS happened!" Pyrrha said, keeping a professional, if slightly worried tone as she gestured at the destruction around them. "What happened?"
"We'll explain later!" Ruby promised. "For now, let's continue to keep this Grimm at bay…"
"Right," Pyrrha said, brandishing Milo and Akoúo and getting into a stance.
"YEEEE-HAAAAA!" Meanwhile, Nora used Magnhild to shoot herself to a nearby King Taijity and then slammed it down on one of its faces in its hammer form.
Looking around, Ruby saw how other teams were arriving and the Atlesian robots she saw the day they faced the Paladin. Slowly but surely, the threat of this breach was coming to an end. Especially when she saw the second-year team, Team CVFY, arriving into the scene.
She would have to ask their leader the schematics of her weapon later, it was amazing how Mecha-shifts could go from something so plain as a purse, to a weapon of mass destruction like a Mini-Gun. So cool!
Professor Goodwitch also arrived, swatting the Grimms like flies and knocking them out without an effort. Ruby sometimes forgets that this woman is their fighting instructor for a reason, behind all the strictness there is a powerful Huntress who could take on Grimm no problem.
And with one wave of her teacher's crop, it was done. The hole where the Grimm had crawled off was sealed, and it seemed that everything was over. With the forces of Atlas and the other teams from Beacon—and even some of the other Academies—the Grimm were swiftly dealt with.
And so, that'd leaves her to ponder on what happened. On the rescue from that came from whom she thought was one of their enemies, but his words resonate to that of her friend.
'It can't be can it…?' She thought, head down and gripping the handle of her weapon tightly. 'He wouldn't be a part of this… right?'
He did cheat his way in… No, that's different. One thing is wanting to attend an academy and the other to assist in an act of terrorism of this scale.
And yet the nickname resonates in her head with strength.
She folded Crescent Rose back into rifle mode and put it to her hip, her brows furrowed and fists clenched. She has now come to a decision. In this mission she didn't do much, she knows it, she let herself be captured and used as hostage for the enemy. She was going to improve; she was going to be better.
She didn't know if they would see the 'Bad Felix' again, considering their victory and that as she observed Roman Torchwick being pulled out of the train carts and being held by Emerald and her teammate Mercury, she was determinate for this new goal of hers:
Next time she sees that mercenary she was going to unmask him and see who was beneath the mask. To confirm or deny their worst fears.
She looked around to see Mister Arc, talking with Miss Goodwitch, probably about what happened during the mission, and thought about how good of an idea would be to tell him. If Bad Felix wasn't Jaune she would be giving him false hope, but if he was then he would be heartbroken to see their son being responsible for this.
She sighed and looked ahead, to see their team gathering after the battle. They already dismissed her the first time she told them she believed the armored man and Jaune were the same person, and even with the added evidence, they could argue that she may have misheard.
Maybe for now, it's best if this is just her personal mission. For only her to know.
"Yo, sis!" Yang called for her, a bright smile in her face. "Come here you!"
Ruby smile ran up to her sister, colliding with her in a hug that Yang quickly reciprocated. Before she does her mission, she was going to enjoy this victory with her team.
"Hehe, you think dad will get mad at us?" Yang asked, looking around. "We did go into another dangerous mission, again."
Ruby shrugged. "Totally worth it!" She said, smiling back at her.
He was in trouble, he gathered that much when Neo just kept glaring at him after pulling him out from the top of the Taijitu. The two now observed the aftermath of the fight from the top of a building, with Neo's Semblance cloaking the two from plain sight.
"Look, let's not search for guilty ones here," Feix told her, only for her to raise her foot and stomp on his. "AGH! You, little—!"
She turned to glare at him, before clicking her teeth and continue to ignore him. Her eyes focused on the scenario bellow. More specifically, how Torchwick was being loaded into a bullhead by both Emerald and Mercury, as well as many of those tin-cans from Atlas.
"It's part of the plan, right? For Torchwick to be captured," He asked her, only to receive silence in response. But not the typical silence from Neo, just no response at all.
Felix rolled his eyes in annoyance. "Really, you're just gonna give me the cold shoulder the whole time?" He asked, not receiving another response from her. "What do you want me to say, 'sorry'? Then fine! I'm sorry I ran to save that girl! You happy?!"
She turned around to glare at him, teeth put back into a snarl.
Felix sighed. "Okay. Not what you wanted to hear." He said, rolling his eyes under the helmet. "You are not happy I helped her in specific, right?"
She stopped snarling, but was still scowling. Turning his face away from him before giving a tiny nod.
"Jealous?" He asked, smirking under the helmet. "OUCH!" That earned him another stomp. "Look! I saved her because I need her for something, okay!? Future plans!"
Taking her under his wing, showing her how this world worked. Getting rid of her stupid friends and make her his protegee if possible. Those were his plans for Ruby and were pretty damn good if they were to ask him.
Neo didn't share the sentiment; she huffed and rolled her eyes. And Felix could see it in her eyes, more than angry she looked disappointed. And quite honestly, Felix didn't like that.
Huffing and taking a deep breath he looked at her. "Okay, listen, I can't explain it fully but that Ruby girl, for me is… like whatever the hell Torchwick is to you, okay?" He told her. "I own her for something a while back, it's complicated. And I need her alive to pay her back."
Neo looked at him for a second with softer eyes. Apparently, the analogy with Roman enough to reach her. She still looked annoyed though, making him roll his eyes.
Women were so damn complicated in his opinion.
She tugged his arms to grab his attention. She was making a cross over her face and putting on a scowl and grumpy expressions all over her face, it took just a few seconds for Felix to realize what she was trying to tell him.
"Locus?" She nodded. Felix scowled and shook his head. "Bastard is a treacherous, holier-than-thou piece of shit. No doubt will he give us trouble; he's the one who ratted us out and the reason they sent Team RWBY and the Huntsman after us."
Neo crossed her finger across her throat, an eager smile on her face.
"Join the line, gorgeous, I also want to kill him," he told her, making her pout. "My identity in Beacon, as well as Cindy and her goons is compromised; Locus has gained the good side of the big wizard of Oz by ratting us out and uncovering the operation. The only thing in our favor is that he now deems the higher ups as incompetent for sending children and just one adult; which I hate to admit makes some sense…"
He trailed off as he looked at Neo, her head nodding off and her eyes half open. She even went so far as to let a trail of droll fall from her mouth.
Felix's eyebrow twitched. "Am I boring you?" She snapped back to attention, looking around as if searching for an excuse, before shrugging and nodding shamelessly. "Well, excuse me princess!"
The area below was soon cleaned up. The students and robots that came to help left and the corpses of the Grimm vanished without leaving a trace behind. Once when they were really in the clear, Neo let go of his hand and the illusion around them vanished and she bent over and let out a sigh.
"Strained?" He asked her, with her giving a semi-shrug before straightening her back. "Now what?"
"Now," A new voice answered him, he turned around to see Cinder and her two pets accompanying her. She was giving him a dark look. "We talk."
Felix sighed. "Hey boss…"
"Felix, dear," She tutted, walking to him and pressing a hand in his chest-plate. "I thought you said those kids wouldn't get in our way anymore after the highway incident."
"Yeah!" Emerald said, barking like the little dog she was. "Those kids made a mess of things!"
"It's clear that someone wants those brats in the frontlines," Felix said, frowning at the group. "And it was Locus who snitched us."
"Where is he?" Cinder asked, eyes narrowed.
"He got away in the chaos," he told her. "Now he's off to God knows where. Want to take it out on me? Fine, I'll refund the money myself!" He told her, even though he didn't have any intention of doing it. "But he's a threat to the plan and—"
"Oh, let him be," Cinder waved him off.
"What?!" That wasn't what he was expecting. "He knows our identities, if he snitched once he can do it again! And they know they can trust him after this!"
"But we have control over the CCT now, remember?" Cinder smirked at him, waving a Scroll at his face. "All calls that he might sent to Ozpin, General Ironwood, or the police will have to pass through the tower and therefore us. We already had the possibility of a spy on our ranks, or an element going rogue. If I were to guess, Locus did that call before the dance where we plugged the virus."
"Tch, talk about bad timing… He could just use other people's Scroll. He could steal Goodbitch's or another teacher's numbers to get to Ozpin," Felix raised. Wanting to cover all bases of what Locus could do.
"If they let themselves get mugged that easily, then our plans would be a lot smoother," Mercury said, just in time to grasp a sneaky Neo's wrist as she tried to take his wallet. "Nice try."
Neo pouted.
"We will keep an eye on numbers we don't recognize," Cinder said, pocketing the Scroll. "I doubt Ozpin is that popular after the breach."
"Fine then," Felix said, allowing himself to relax. "What now then? Locus is still a threat."
"One we'll deal with after our plans are fulfilled," Cinder reassured. "No one crosses me and gets away with it," Her eyes narrowed at him.
Felix got the message and saluted. "Dully noted…"
"Keep the money though, Felix," Cinder told him with a smile. "Despite everything, today was a success."
"A lot of Faunus didn't make it out of the tunnels," Mercury said, crossing his arms. "Would the White Fang continue to listen to us?"
"Maybe not to you…" A brand-new voice cut through the conversation. Felix turned to see a man with red hair and bull horns joining them, a White Fang mask over his face. "But they'll listen to me."
'I can feel the cuts coming from his edge…' Felix thought dryly. "And you are…?"
"This is Adam Taurus," Cinder introduced. "Leader of the White Fang of Vale."
Adam looked at Felix with a sneer and a scoff. "A soldier from Atlas?"
"You offend me, I'm not from fucking Atlas, for the last time!" Felix told him. "So, you're the big boss of the White Fang?"
"… Of Vale, yes," Okay, that was too specific. Adam walked pass him and looked at the scenery bellow. "So, Blake was part of stopping the plan?"
"Blake…?" Felix muttered. "You two know each other?"
Adam turned to him; his face pulled back into a scowl. "She's a treacherous, holier-than-thou coward. Who ran away when things didn't go her way."
"… Oh, wow, buddy, I know the feeling," And he meant it. Now he wanted to grab a beer with the guy. "So, she was with you in the White Fang, huh?"
"Yes. Until she decided to throw everything overboard and be a part of the system that constantly puts Faunus under the boot of Humans," Adam ranted.
An idea then came to Felix's mind. His face forming a wicked smile. "Do you have… proof of it? Videos? Pictures?"
"Why?" Adam asked, for the first time his voice leaving the constant loathing and forming genuine curiosity.
Felix walked to him. "You want to get back to her? What better way to do it than to take away that for which she worked so hard?" He took off his helmet as a sign of good will. "This way Team RWBY will finally be taken off the equation, or at the very least one of them, AND you get back at her for betraying you. And we'll do it by exposing who she was on the past."
He extended a hand, Neo, Cinder and the others were watching them he knew that, but he would pay them mind later. Meanwhile Adam stared at the hand, before shrugging and taking it.
A new plan has formed in Felix's mind. One that would help in finally taking away one piece of Team RWBY.
