Chapter 20: Just When Things Were Starting To Work Out
In the same night in which Akira and Jun confessed their love for the first time, a police car could be seen on patrol in the trafficked streets of the city.
"That stupid geezer chief just won't give us a break, will he?" spoke an annoyed cop in the police car, a well built man that had short black hair and blue eyes, not at all happy at how his boss had put him on patrol for yet another day instead of having him do some paperwork for a change or sending him on vacation for even a week given how he and his colleague had been on duty for more than a two months.
"He's relying on us Jin. Hey, congratulations for the promotion by the way." spoke his colleague and friend, a younger man, with a slightly slimmer build and light brown hair and green eyes, sitting next to him, driving the car, congratulating him for his recent promotion to lieutenant. The two had met each other during the law enforcement entrance exam and had graduated from the same academy, the Metropolitan Police Academy, three years ago after six long months of training.
"Heh, that's weird, i don't feel any better." replied sarcastically Jin, with a fake happy tone, earning a chuckle from his colleague. The two had become best friends immediately ever since they first met at the exam. And that bond of friendship only got stronger with those six months of hard training.
"What? Would you rather ask for a transfer to the narcotics?" Asked in a teasing tone his friend causing Jin's face to turn pale.
"Hell, no! I don't want to become a drug addict. Less time i spend around that shit, the better." abrubtly replied Jin causing his friend to chuckle in amusement at his colleague's reaction, before Jin continued "I just wish they would give us more paperwork for a change."
"You did that till yesterday." replied casually his friend, causing Jin to sweat-drop. Still, his friend in some way felt exactly like Jin. They could really use a week or two of vacation given how Christmas was not too far away.
The two continued their scheduled patrol for a while until Jin's friend spoke again "Say, Jin, have you heard of those bizarre dissappearances?" his voice taking on a serious tone, while he was driving the car through the Rainbow Bridge, on the bay.
With a nod, Jin replied "Yes, Toya. Apparently there were some outlandish reports of people having simply dissappeared without a trace." his voice equally as serious. "And it all started two weeks ago. At least 20 people have been reported to have dissappeared like that."
"And not just humans. Beasts too." stated Jin's colleague, now known as Toya with a grim look on his face "But wait, there's more: four days ago there was a train crash in the countryside." continued Toya, his voice and his face becoming even more grim.
"Yeah, i've heard of that. I've also heard that one of the cars was found, despite having been hardly damaged at all, with all of the passengers gone, their clothes all that remained of them." spoke Jin, his voice and face becoming as gloomy as that of his colleague "You don't think, that the one responsible of those dissappearances is also the one responsible for that train crash?"
Toya replied "Don't know. Guess we'll have to wait and see." his friend and colleague who replied "A serial killer of both humans and beasts. Can you imagine that?" in slight disbelief. True, the world had changed a lot ever since the defeat of the God Child but even this was on a completely different level. Who would be so cruel to take the lives of not of one, but two different races just for pure enjoyment?
At that moment a comunication came out of the radio "Attention, all units. The suspect responsible for the train crash in the countryside four days ago, has been reportedly spotted in the Chiyoda District. All units in the vicinity are to be dispatched at the district." the comunication coming directly from the headquarters of of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.
Sensing an opportunity, Jin grinned before saying "Great. The perfect opportunity to get some vacation. They'll give us a month of holidays for banging in this guy!"
His friend on the other hand, wasn't so sure "You sure, Jin? We're talking about a serial killer of both men and beasts. It would be better to call some support before we go in." he replied, not sure if just the two of them would be enough for the task.
"Don't worry, our rifles will be more than enough to get the job done." reassured Jin. In fact, after the beasts were finally given equal rights as the rest of mankind, the Police Department of Tokyo had given the autorization to all their officers to carry rifles, shotguns and machine guns given how simple handguns were judged as not sufficient to deal with beasts, if some were to turn into criminals.
"And besides…." he added, before turning towards his friend "I woudn't have come this far if it wasn't for you. With you on my side, i feel like we can accomplish everything!" spoke reassuredly Jin at his friend. Ever since becoming police officers they had almost always worked together, solved cases together, brought criminals to justice together and even survived the goverment crisis and the campaign of the rogue beasts together. What would just yet another criminal be compared to everything they went through together, especially the national emergency?
Encouraged by Jin's confidence and by his trust towards him, Toya replied "So do i, Jin. Let's bring this maniac in." with a smug grin. And so the two cops made their way to the Chiyoda District and started their sweep on the district. Little did they know of what they were about to get themselves into.
For only 10 minutes in their sweep, they discovered another police car. Overturned and in flames, with the cops driving it outside of it, one of them, a man with short blonde hair with minor cuts and the other, a humanoid wolf-like beast with brown fur and silver hair, severely injured, with a broken leg and several ribs. Because, yes, as unbeliavable as it was, even some beasts had been accepted into the Police Force and even in the military after the crisis ended.
Utterly shocked, Jin and Toya shouted in distress "SUZUKA! KURO!" recognizing their colleagues and friends, before quickly parking their car at their colleagues's side, getting out of it and coming to their aid. They were completely disbelieved to see the state in which their colleagues's car now was. They way it now laid upon the sidewalk seemed like it had been….. thrown there.
"What the hell happened here?!" exclaimed Jin, utterly shocked by the state of the other car and of its colleagues, while coming at Suzuka's side, helping him on his feet, while Toya went to give Kuro help.
"It… it was him… that bastard who derailed that train… He overturned our car…..as if it was a pancake…..." Weakly managed Kuro, his voice muffled by blood, before choking on it, shocking both Jin and Toya. That guy did this with his bare hands? As if those outlandish reports weren't enough, this was the proof that this serial killer was not human.
"Don't push yourself Kuro!" spoke calmly Toya before turning towards Suzuka and throwing his microphone at him before shouting "He needs help! Call an ambulance now!" distress clearly present in his voice. Despite knowing him for only two months, the wolf like beast had quickly become friends with both Toya and Jin due to his honesty and devotion to duty, proving to the two officers that you can't judge a book by its cover
"But what about you? You're not really thinking of going after that monster on your own?!" asked a worried Suzuka, while coming at Kuro, who laid on the ground, his breathing getting more and more frantic.
He then watched as Jin pulled out two machine guns and two bulletproof jackets, before handing one of both to Toya. He then spoke reassuredly, visibly angered by what the serial killer did "Don't worry, we're not letting him get away. That bastard ain't gonna survive these. Where did he go?" he asked. Suzuka pointed towards an abbandoned building behind the two armed cops before stating "That building. Be careful. You haven't seen what he's capable of." still in a worried tone.
"We're going in. You stay with Kuro. And call an ambulance and some support. If this guy is what i fear he is, we're gonna need all the help we can get." Ordered Toya, earning a nod from Suzuka before the two cops, now armored and loaded before setting towards the building.
The two cops made their way through the building unopposed, as if the place was empty, but they knew better that it was the lair of a predator, hiding for the perfect moment to strike, when the two were least expecting it. Floor after floor, Jin and Toya searched the entire building looking for even a hint of the killer's presence. The only thing they found was silence. An all too disturbing silence.
"Don't like this. It's way too quiet. Maybe we should go back and wait for some support to arrive….." spoke Toya, breaking the silence and causing Jin to raise his eyebrows at his friend's voice. He could clearly hear the anxiety and the doubt in Toya's voice after seeing with his own eyes what the killer had done to his friends's car.
Coming at his side and putting a reassuring hand on his shoulder, Jin spoke "Toya, look at me." causing the younger man to turn towards him. "We've been through so much together. This maniac's nothing compared to all the crap that happened in the crisis." he continued, his voice serious but at the same time reassuring.
"Jin…" was all Toya could say before his colleague put his hands on the younger man's chin and after meeting his eyes with his own, pulled him into a kiss. Indeed, the crisis in its full swing had put a heavy toll on both officers, that made them question themselves not only as persons but their sexuality. But in their time spent together, through their shared struggle they found peace within each other which later turned into love.
"Nothing will change the way i feel towards you. Not even your true nature…." Declared Jin once again, causing Toya's eyes to shake in passion. Indeed during the crisis, it wasn't just their relationship that changed from friendship to love.
"Jin…. We already talked about this…. It's one thing to show our relationship together as human beings….. but what will the others think? What will they think of a man and a male beast being in love?" asked Toya, his voice getting dry and troubled. Indeed, before confessing their feelings to one another, Toya awakened as a beast. Despite that, he was accepted in the police along with many others. And even though there were still many who looked at beasts with apprehension and anxiety, Jin was the one who always stood up for him in these last two months, reminding everyone of the service and the dedication to duty Toya had done ever since he first became a police officer. And that only served to strengthen their bond. But Toya was still afraid of showing himself in his true appearance to the others as well as his relationship with Jin to everybody given what he had become.
"I don't give a shit about what the others think. If they mess with you, they mess with me. Never forget that." declared once again Jin, reminding his lover that he will do everything for him.
"Jin…" spoke passionately Toya, his heart once again being warmed by his lover's feelings, before the more heavily built man said "But right now, i need your true self, Toya. We can't let that bastard get away after everything he's done. And if he is like you, these guns might not be enough. But i know you have what it takes Toya. Believe in yourself as i believe in you." he concluded with a soothing smile.
Heartwarmed and with is resolve strengthened, Toya spoke "Jin….. thank you." before removing all of his clothes and bullet-proof jacket. He then assumed his true form, that of a two meter tall insect-like humanoid with a slim yet athletic build with a green and yellow exoskeleton, gunmetal gray colored joints, an insectoid head with red compounded eyes, two pairs of mandibles and a purple third eye in between his red eyes and a pair of caterpillar-like antennae. His arms remained relatively the same only with small but sharp claws and he now had only two clawed toes and a third claw coming from his ankles.
Having transformed, Toya put his bullet-proof jacket back, picked up his machine gun and spoke with a deeper and reverberating voice "Let's bring this fucker to justice." earning a nod and an approving smile from Jin who replied "Right. Let's roll out!"
Little did they know who was waiting for them on the roof.
As the couple reached the roof they quickly spotted the one who was waiting for them them, under the moon's shining light, standing with his back turned towards him, a man of normal height, dressed in the standard uniform for train guards, complete with a hat, that had short black hair and eyes and an impassive look on his face. The man was staring at the moon, seemingly oblivious to the cops who had found him.
After spotting him, the two officers immediately aimed their machineguns at him and bellowed "FREEZE!" finally earning the man's attention.
"Oh, look who's come to greet me. A man and a roach. I was beginning to wonder when the rest of you would show up." spoke the man in a calm, taunting and disturbingly soothing tone, while glancing towards the two cops who were now pointing their guns towards him.
"ON THE GROUND, HANDS BEHIND YOUR HEAD!" Ordered furiously the insect-like humanoid beast (even more enraged by the man in uniform's insult) and his partner, having no doubt that the one before them was the one responsible for all those dissappearances, the train crash and Suzuka and Kuro's injuries.
"My, such impatience you cops have. You are no fun at all." spoke the man in uniform once again in a teasing and creepy tone before while chuckling darkly unnerving the two cops.
"DON'T PLAY GAMES WITH US! WE KNOW WHAT YOU DID, YOU SON OF A BITCH!" shouted again Jin, enraged by the arrogance and insolence of this man. However in his voice, there was a hint of uneasiness, due to how creepy that man sounded.
"YOU'LL COME WITH US OR WE'RE GONNA MAKE YOU EXPERIENCE THE SUFFERING YOU PUT ALL THOSE PEOPLE TROUGH!" roared Toya, just as enraged as his colleague and friend.
However at that moment, as soon as Toya spoke those last words, the man in the black uniform stopped chuckling completely and straightened his posture, taking the two cops completely by surprise. They then noticed that the man's upper body began to shake slightly, not out of emotions but due to something more sinister….. and more horrifying than the two cops could possibly imagine.

"Suffering? How dare you use that word!" spoke the man again, taking off his hat and tossing it away, his voice having changed completely, now devoid of teasing and arrogance but full of outrage and suppressed anger and bloodlust at the two cops's use of a word that was sacred to him, before his body began to change completely.
Immediately noticing the back of the man beginning to grow exponentially, his arms and legs doubling in size, the two cops began to lose their composure and Toya spoke, startled "Wh-what the hell is he?!"
"What you think of as suffering, is only a shadow…" continued the man once again, his voice becoming depeer, monstrous and reverberating like a snake's hiss. The two cops then watched in terror as the man growing back tore through the uniform like it was paper and began to harden itself, becoming a brown in color with a green rugose outline and assume an oval shape with a pointed tip, essentially becoming a turtle's shell. In the meantime the man's arms and legs tripled in size, his hand nails and toes (which were reduced from five to three) turning into sharp turtle-like claws, tearing through the sleeves, trousers and shoes, gaining very powerful looking muscles, the skin becoming rugose like that of a reptile and assuming a brownish red color.
A red turtle-like tail sprouted from under the newly formed carapace, and something seemed to emerge from the bony plates of the turtle-like creature's carapace. Something that horrified the two cops that were pointing their firearms at the creature, chilling them to the core so much, that they started gasping.
"T-Those are…" spoke both cops at the same time, their mouths (or rather, in Toya's case, his mandibles) hanging open in horror and shock at the realisation that the bumps that came out of the creature's bony plates of its shell were in fact faces. Faces of both humans and beasts who were clearly contorted in agony and pain, crying uncontollably and weakly mumbling and pleading in help or in pain.
"It….. it hurts…
"Help… Help us…."
"Kill….. kill me….
Spoke dozens of dozens of faces on the creature's shells, their voices and their cries full of umbridled agony and terror. At that moment the two cops were starting to believe that what was happening before them was a nightmare. Truly such a horror and hideous imagery coudn't possibly exist in this world.
But the two cops were in for a rude awakening when the humanoid hulking turtle-like creature spoke again, after all the faces appeared on its shell "Suffering has a face…." its reverberating snake-like voice chilling the two cops to the core. Oddly enough though and most disturbingly, there were two empty-spaces in the centre of the creature's carapace. Finally the creature revealed its head at the two cops, attached to a long, extendable red neck. A half turtle, half dragon-like head with a green upper skull with a a pair of green dragon-like horns, a smaller pair of bluish horns under them, yellow eyes with a slit, reptilian pupil which rested on a rose, fleshly outline and a dark blue snapping turtle-like sharp beak, with interlocking sharp teeth in the inner part of the mouth, near where the jaw and the mandible articulated each other.
With its transformation completed, the creature, now standing a good three meters tall, dwarfing even Toya, spoke, after opening its mouth and letting out a long snake-like forked tongue "Allow me to show it to you….. Gentlemen…." while fully turning its head towards the cops, the yellow reptilian eyes meeting the cops's own, paralizing the two men in fear.
"I….. AM….. SUFFERING!" finally declared the turtle-like monster, drool coming out of its mouth, in the most depraved, unhinged voice one could imagine. The moment the creature spoke those last words, the two cops finally lost it and screamed in unbridled horror and fear before finally opening fire at the creature.
To their horror however the creature turned its back at the two cops and their gunfire instead struck the carapace and the faces on it. The bullets bounced off the creature's hard shell and punched through the faces, killing them immediately while those who survived screamed in fear and terror and began to plead for their lives.
"NOO! I DON'T WANT TO DIE!" screamed a middle aged man's face, fearing for its life.
"PLEASE, HAVE MERCY ON US!" Screamed a young woman's face, just as frightened.
"M-MAMA! HELP ME!" Wailed a young girl, less than 10 years old, overcome by fear, longing for a mother's embrace that will never come.
Immediately the two cops ceased firing, horrified at the realisation that those faces…. No, those people on the turtle monster's shell were fully alive. And they had just gunned some of them down.
"N-no….. What have we done….." was all Jin could mutter out, horrified at the realisation that he and Toya had just murdered those people.
"Hehehehehehe! KAKAKAKAKAKAKAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" Chuckled darkly the humanoid turtle monster before erupting in a cackling, gleeful and maniacal laugh at the psicological breakdown of the two cops in front of him. This was what he lived for. The torment, the screams, the sweet suffering. There was no greater joy in his life than breaking his prey emotionally before consuming it and adding it to his collection.
"Look at what you've done. And you had the nerve to call me a killer? HAHAHAHA! You're not all that different from me now! And i have a special seat reserved just for you two on my shell!" Declared gleefully and ravingly the hulking turtle monster, laughing maniacally again, before turning back towards the two cops and extending one of its arms towards Jin as if it was made of rubber, who reopened fire in an attempt to beat it off but to no avail as it coiled hard around him, causing him to drop his machine gun and to wail in pain as the monster's crushing grip started to crack some of his bones.
"NO! LET HIM GO!" roared Toya before tossing his gun away and launching himself towards the turtle monster, aiming to slash at him with his claws, but all the monster had to do was extending its other arm that stopped Toya dead in his tracks, coiling itself around the humanoid insect beast's body from the shoulders to the thigs, immobilizing him completely and lifting him off the ground as if he weighed nothing more than a feather.
The monster then pulled its muscular arms back towards him, with the two cops, still ensnared in them before declaring "I know your fear….. I can smell it…." his yellow eyes meeting the eyes of the two cops who were now trembling uncontrollably in utter fear and dread, their eyes shaking in terror, their teeth gritting uncontrollably in fear, having lost all hope. The hulking humanoid turtle then continued " "Please, don't separate me from my better half …" " its voice taking on a disturbingly soothing and calm tone, drool falling out of its mouth, terrifying the two cops even more to the point Jin started crying uncontrollably, not even managing to scream in terror at his inevitable doom, while Toya could only watch in horror and grief at his lover's emotional breakdown. It didn't matter how different they were from each other, the two police officers were the same to the turtle monster. Food, fresh meat.
"I give you my word. That will never happen." finally concluded the creature, before opening wide, exposing a throat large enough to swallow an entire human being whole.
From the streets Suzuka and Kuro, who were now finally receiving the help from an ambulance and its crew, and with their reinforcements having finally arrived, froze in their tracks as soon as nothing but screams and cries of terror and panic could be heard from the top of the building before being quickly muffled out. Suzuka at that point fell on his knees, the rest of his body limp due to the horrifying realisation that his two friends had been killed.
"No….. Jin….. Toya….." was all he could manage, in utter hopelessness and horror, completely oblivious at how gruesome and horrifying his two friends's demise was.
Jin was the first one to go. The hulking turtle monster's jaws clamped themselves on him all the way to his lower abdomen causing him to scream in utter agony as he was lifted in the air by the monster's jaws before shaking him around like a ragdoll, breaking many of his bones due to the force with wich he was being shaken. Finally the turtle monster raised its neck upwards before swallowing him whole, while the cop screamed in agony all the way, before his cries dissappeared. And Toya could only watch in horror the whole time. He then began to weakly mumble under his breath "N-no…. Toya…" distraught at the realisation that it was all his fault. If only he could have convinced Jin to wait for backup instead of just storming in to keep the monster busy this woudn't have happened.
"I'm sorry… it was all my fault….." mumbled again the humanoid insect beast, devastated at the realisation that Jin's confidence, the trust he put in himself and in his lover….. was exactly what doomed them both.
After having swallowed Jin, the hulking creature turned its attention towards Toya and with a malicious grin, spoke "Oh, do not worry, you will join him soon enough! That is what i promised you after all, did i not?" nothing but pure sadism and viciousness radiating from every word that left the creature's mouth. Being a man, or rather a creature of its own word, the turtle-like monster always kept in promises… in his own dark, messed up way.
The then creature tightened its crushing grip before the poor beast's entire body, along with his spine, snapped in two with a loud crunch, insides falling out. Toya could only gurgle in unspeakable pain before blood suffocated his cries and came out of his mouth not even allowing him to breathe its last as life abbandoned him. The turtle creature then lifted up the beast's upper body with its two hands upside down, holding it like a kid would hold a cup of soup, before diving its head in, messily devouring the man's intestines, liver, heart and other organs before swallowing its torn upper body whole. Finally the creature swallowed up Toya's torn lower body, completing its dinner.
Soon afterwards two new faces appeared on the monster's shell. The faces of the two cops, human and beast that it had just eaten emerged out of the bony plates, screaming in agony.
Jin's face could only look around in horror, noticing the faces of dozens of other people including those the two cops had gunned down before noticing his lover Toya's face on his right, moaning in pain open due to his gruesome last moments.
"You monster….. what have done to us?!" weakly exclaimed the older cop, forever trapped on the creature's shell. Just when things were starting to work out for the couple their lives had been cut short and this was to be their fate. To suffer on this monster's shell until they would slowly fade away with time.
"Is it not obvious? I have reunited you. Are you not grateful to have been eaten by me?" replied soothingly the hulking turtle monster after glacing his head towards his shell, due to its incredibly flexible neck, staring at Toya's face.
"Bastard…. I will never forgive you! YOU HEAR ME?! I WILL CURSE YOU FOREVER!" roared the human's face in a weak act of defiance but this only earned a disturbingly satisfied humming from the humanoid turtle.
"Yes! Curse me as much as you want! To be hated! To be feared! That is the greatest joy for a demon such as myself! THAT IS THE PRIDE OF I, JINMEN! KAKAKAKAKAKA, MWHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!" Declared pridefully and in ecstasy the hulking turtle-like demon now known as Jinmen, before spreading his arms, closing his eyes and letting out a primal, animalistic and maniacal laugh, the full moon shining brightly behind him. For some sick twist of fate, the cruelest demon ever to have existed had returned. For a month he remained hidden, slowly regaining his powers as he made the city his hunting ground, emerging out of his hiding once every single week to feed.
Soon, he'll become strong enough, that his powers will increase to the point nobody would oppose him. His powers had grown in hell due to the hatred towards the one who slew him, who tore him apart. But now, his vengeance was at hand! He could feel himself becoming stronger and stronger with every single passing week! Soon, every living being in existence will bow before the master of suffering, the one above all other living beings, the most evil demon ever to have existed!
"PUNY HUMANS! I SHALL RULE YOU ALL! YOU WILL ALL BOW DOWN BEFORE MY MIGHT AND SERVE AS THE NOURISHMENT OF I, JINMEN, YOUR PREDATOR!" Declared the Turtle-like demon, overcome by its hubris, pride and pleasure at the newfound powers he now held while retracting the faces back into his shell, causing every single one of the cops and emergency personell on the streets below the abbandoned building to cower in fear at his declaration. Never before in his entire existence had he felt so powerful, so mighty! He felt as if not even the likes of Devilman and Zennon could oppose him now!
And with another maniacal laugh, Jinmen began to float in the air due to his newfound powers before retracting his hindlimbs into his shell and ejecting flames out of the holes from which his hindlimbs would come out before flying away like a fighter jet and gradually dissappearing in the dark of the night.
Umberknownst to him, he had been watched the whole time.
High in the sky, hidden by its black colored plumage, hovered a humanoid owl-like beast, with its arms folded over its chest that had patiently watched the entire gruesome murder and devouring of the two cops with its extraordinary night-vision. The beast had black colored feathers, that covered the entire body save from the legs from the knees down which were scaly and dark blue in color which ended in three owl-like recurved claws and relatively skinny arms that were feathered in the upper arms and scaly in the forearms which ended with only two fingers equipped with small but sharp claws. The beast sported a pair of large black feathered wings that protruded from its back and most unusually, the beast had an owl head that heavily resembled an eurasian eagle owl's with a pair of ear tufts, yellow eyes devoid of pupils, a lighter blue eagle-like beak filled with small but sharp teeth and a lighter blue beard coming from the throat, but it also sported a half-human, half-demonic face in the center of its comparatively small torso in proportion to its large legs and wings, that had orange colored eyes and slightly sharp teeth.
It was none other than Kitano, one of Satoru's four henchmen, in his true form, who had been ordered to patrol the city in search of some of those so called "Demons" who could be persuaded into joining their cause, given how their goal was basically the same as the Crusaders's own.
Kitano, under the cover of darkness had watched Jinmen's psichological torment and devouring of the two cops. In spite of remaining calm and showing little to no emotion, Kitano had to admit that the turtle demon was one nasty piece of work. Sure, he and his colleagues were utter sadists, taking pleasure in hurting others, especially those puny humans, but the turtle demon's depravity and animalistic savagery was simply on another level.
"Mmph. This Jinmen is quite the artist. Not to mention that ability of his. Master Satoru would surely benefit from someone like him's help." spoke Kitano with the face on his chest, to himself with a grin. Being the stoic and quiet one of the Crusaders, Kitano was the least sadistic of the four. In fact he had quickly grown bored of torturing those puny humans. There was simply no fun in torturing such weak and frail creatures. He would rather fight against strong opponents to prove his strength as the master of Wind.
