Chapter 4: 8 Years Later
Izuku is walking in circles in his bedroom while the computer on his desk plays the hero news. His routine for the last eight years has been to study other heroes, practice with his quirk, and apply what he learns to new training methods. His strength has increased the older he got, his skills in crawling and walking on walls and ceilings has gotten a lot better, and he's learning how to better understand the tingling in his head. Along with bettering his quirk, he has also been studying a lot more at the library on the weekends.
His mother has been working a lot more since he turned eleven and could take care if himself at home. He spent his alone time doing his homework, studying, training, and tinkering. Over the years of his schooling Izuku has gotten far more ahead if his peers with only Katsuki being the exception. The boy developed a keen interest in science and engineering while doing his hero research. He has made several inventions, most of which have exploded or are still in the prototype phase.
Izuku has thought long and hard on how to use his quirk in different ways. One of his ideas is to make wrist attachments that shoot a substance that he can use for both mobility and in combat. The only problem is that he needs to create something that is lightweight, can fit lots of it in small capsules, and strong enough to subdue a villain. He also doesn't have the materials to work on such a project either.
the twelve year old boy unstuck from the ceiling and landed in a crouching position. The notebook in his hands reveal notes on how to create the wrist attachments from various cheap material until he could get better gear. He can feel the tingling in his head so he places his notebook on the desk right as a knock on the door is heard. Inko opens the door and peaks her head into his room.
"I'm heading to work now Izuku. Do you want me to bring you back anything tonight?"
The boy thought for a moment and smiled at his mother. She in turn gave him a tired smile back which is what he expected.
"Can you get a box of the chocolates that I like please?"
Inko nods at her son and closes the door. He hears the front door open and close a moment later leaving him alone once again. He decides that being cooped up in the apartment would be boring. The park would be a good place to go for a walk or even some more training. He changes into a pair of black shorts, a red shirt, and his red shoes.
Before he opens his bedroom door he looks at himself in a long mirror that's hanging on said door. His body has changed from the years of training he's done by himself. He is showing signs of a runners build but has the strength of more than one hundred body builders. He leaves the apartment through the front door and leaps off the rails. Landing into a crouching position he takes a moment to collect himself. Jumping from high places isn't as easy as all the heroes make it out to be.
The walk to the park is uneventful. Izuku practices using what he dubbed the 'spider sense.' He has learned that the tingling sensation in his head is more than just a warning or heads up. He is basically a human lie detector with how he experimented with using the ability when talking to people. He has trained his body to better react rather than relying on pure instinct.
He made it to the park without realizing how lost in thought he was. He looks around and sees kids in all ages having fun. He feels a tug in his head and steps to the side as a ball flies past his head. A few kids around the age of eight run up to him and bow their heads to apologize.
"We're sorry mister!"
He rubs the back of hid head and smiles at them. They look surprised that he isn't mad and smile back. Izuku gives the kids a thumbs up and lets them continue to get the ball.
"Just be more careful please!"
He shouts at them as they run off. He continues on his walk enjoying the breeze and the sun light. On the walk he finds a trail to follow that brings back old memories.
-Flashback Four Years Ago-
An eight year old Izuku is seen following Katsuki into the park with his lackys. Ever since the awakening of Izuku's quirk the blonde has been trying to prove that he is better than him. Izuku has noticed that Katsuki doesn't like it when he can do something better than him so he often holds back his true strength and skills. He remembers the feeling of anger when he pushed him down when they were four years old. Izuku doesn't want to accidentally hurt anyone with his abilities.
"Hey Deku, you'll be the bad guy in this game."
The blonde tells Izuku with a sinister grin. The other two kids with them are also grinning and trying to cover their laughter. Izuku on the other hand let's out a defeated sigh. He is always the one who is forced to be the villain during their games.
"But Kacchan I was the bad guy the last time we played and the time before that."
Katsuki just laughs and the other two boys join him. Izuku is hurt that they always make him the bad guy during the game. It goes too far sometimes and they end up hurting him on 'accident.' The only bright side is that it helps him train his spider sense and reflexes.
"You make the perfect bad guy Deku. Plus what hero is only good at climbing walls?"
The other boys point and laugh at Izuku as he tries to not cry. He gets that feeling in his stomach like something is boiling up. He's been getting that feeling a lot with Katsuki since the day he shoved him down. The blonde boy has been treating him very differently after he saw his quirk. It doesn't help that Izuku unconsciously holds back due to fear of hurting his friend.
-Flashback End-
Izuku found himself standing at the lake that he and Katsuki would hang out at. The log they used to cross the lake is still there as well. He smiles a bit at the memories that go through his mind before he and Katsuki got their quirks. After a moment of reminiscing the boy crouches and easily leaps across the lake. Upon landing he suddenly hears somone laughing deeper in the woods.
He looks around the area but all he sees is trees and mother nature. Deciding that he doesn't want to talk to anyone he jumps high onto a tree and sticks to it. He lands on a branch waiting for the person to walk by. To his slight surprise it's Katsuki who is walking by with the two boys that always follow him around. He let's them pass by and then checks the area that they came from to see what they were up to.
The clearing the boys were in had craters and burn marks all over the place. From the looks of it katsuki comes to this place to practice his quirk. The damage is pretty intense showing that the blonde's abilities are getting stronger. The smell of caramel lingers in the air from the nitroglycerin like sweat that Katsuki uses to power his explosions. Izuku realizes that he has to up his training if he wants to be on the same level or stronger than his old friend.
He takes out a small notebook from his back pocket and starts to rapidly write down information based on what he can see around him. If he wants to be the number one hero then he needs to learn as much as he can about other people's quirks to counter them. Not only does he need to be smart, he needs to be strong as well. He puts the notebook back into his pocket while turning around to leave.
When he gets back to the lake he sees Katsuki and the two other boys surrounding someone. There is the faint sound of whimpers and sniffling from the person on the ground. Katsuki laughs loudly as the person tries to stand up but he shoves her back down. Frowning at the display before him he starts to run at the group.
"Why are you bullying them Kac- Katsuki?"
Katsuki turns around with an annoyed expression while the others look bored. Izuku can see the person on the ground who appears to be a girl around their age. She has large eyes and a wide mouth with large hands and green hair similar to his own. She almost looks like a frog with the way she is crouching on the ground.
"What are you doing here Deku? Still can't leave me alone, huh?"
Izuku narrows his eyes at Katsuki as the blonde boy raises his hand with small explosions going off. The other boys also get into sloppy fighting stances. The girl on the ground looks scared at what is about to happen so Izuku thinks of a way out of the situation. He raises his hands up in surrender making Katsuki smirk.
"I don't want to fight Katsuki. Just leave the girl alone please."
The other boys laugh at him as Katsuki's smirk turns into a glare. Izuku feels the tingling sensation in his head telling him to jump back. As he does so Katsuki leaps forward while swinging his knee at Izuku's stomach. The blow barely missed so Izuku used Katsuki's momentum and did a backflip while tossing the blonde over him. The other two try to attack him as well but the frog girl uses her tonge to wrap around one of the boys leg and trip him. The other boy stretches his fingers to wrap around Izuku but he leaps out of the way accidentally wrapping up Katsuki instead.
While the boys are distracted Izuku helps the girl up and holds her bridal style. He says a quick apology before leaping into the trees and gaining distance from the trio. The girl lets out a surprised yelp as Izuku leaps from tree branch to tree branch. Once they get far enough he lets her stand on a branch whike he sticks to the tree.
"Sorry about that. Are you ok?"
Izuku asks the girl while he checks if they're being followed. She looks at him then back at the ground with wide eyes. Izuku can hear Katsuki and the others shouting while they run by. Thankfully Izuku and the girl are high enough in the trees that they can't be seen.
"That boy has some major issues."
The girl says bluntly with her tongue sticking out. Izuku noticed that she used her tongue to trip the boy earlier. She looks at him with a blank expression while placing her pointer finger on her chin. They can no longer hear or see Katsuki and the other two so Izuku let's out the breath he was holding.
"Thank you for helping me. Who are you by the way?"
Izuku lets out a nervous chuckle as he rubs the back of his head. He jumps off the tree and lands on the branch next to the girl with his hand extended. She takes his hand and shakes it before they both bow to each other.
"Sorry about picking you up without your permission, but I figured it'd be better to get out of there as quickly as possible. My name is Izuku Midoriya. Nice to meet you."
The girl nods in thanks as she looks down from the tree branch. Izuku also looks down and realizes that they are pretty high up from the ground.
"My name is Tsuyu Asui, but you can call me Tsu."
Izuku tilts his head at the nickname but smiles anyway. He didn't expect to make a new friend today. The look on her face doesn't show much emotion but he can tell that she's being friendly. Suddenly a beeping sound is heard and Tsuyu pulls out her phone to read a text message.
"I'm sorry Izu-chan but I have to go now. I hope to see you here again."
After she says that she leaps onto another tree branch and continues to leap away. Izuku is surprised that she can leap so far but waves as she disappears into the trees. He hops down from the branch and lands in a crouching position on the ground. After dusting off his pants he walks back to the park while going over what just happened. He thinks about how he was able to easily jump from tree to tree while carrying someone.
'I should add rescue training to my list of practicing my quirk.'
He thinks to himself as he continues to walk. Along the way his stomach start to growl causing a few people to look at him. He shyly smiles at them and begins to walk faster. Before he heads home he thinks about stopping by a local store for a snack. His mother has recently been giving him an allowance for taking care of the apartment while she is at work. He takes out his wallet and counts enough money to buy a snack and drink for when he gets home.
-About An Hour Later-
Izuku is walking home from the store with a grocery back full of snacks and drinks. After he got the first couple of items he wanted he thought about getting more for later. One snack and drink turned into a bag full. He's glad that he has a mini fridge in his room so that he doesn't take room in the bigger fridge. He feels his phone vibrate in his pocket and takes it out to see a text message from his mother.
"Mrs. Takiyoma called out today so I'll have to fill in for the night shift. I'll order something for dinner for you to get dropped off at the apartment."
Read the message from Inko. Izuku nodded and sent a quick reply of agreement and continues on his way home. He smiles a bit thinking of how to fill his alone time with more training. Taking out his phone, he looks up different gyms to visit so that he can better train his strength and maybe his combat skills. Nodding to himself he looks up and sees his apartment in the distance. He looks around to check if anyone is watching before running up the side of the building and climbing into the apartment through the window.
"Ah, finally snack time."
