AN: Things get a lil' hawt at the end

Spring - March

Humming to herself, Ellie scattered the feed across the basins. Their sheep were baa-ing like crazy and she chuckled before speaking to them. "Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know, I know, you're hungry. Don't worry, there's enough for everyone." She scooped more feed from the pail before sprinkling it in the basin again.

That's when a flashing silhouette caught her attention.

"Hey! Daisy I see you, don't steal Poppy's food!"

Daisy let out this loud baa before Ellie stood her ground and gave her a mean look.

"Don't make me put you on a diet! I know you've been snacking more than you should!"

She baa-ed again as if she was sassing her back.

"Why you…"

Ellie pointed her fingers at her eyes before pointing them at Daisy. She then scoffed at her fluffy friend before turning away and finishing the rest of her barn chores. Dina and her had discussed heading back to Jackson today so once their sheep were all given food, she took Shimmer and Japan from the stables before shutting the barn door. After the horses were settled, she made her way to the chicken coup before giving them their breakfast as well. The chickens were quick to cluck in excitement and just as she was about to wrap it up, she got blindsided and knocked to the floor.

"Oof— ah fuck! What the hell Buddy?"

Buddy wolfed at her before excitedly wagging his tail. He impatiently nudged Ellie's side with his nose before wolfing at her again. Shortly after, he started licking her face as his sibling rounded the corner.

"Argh— stop!"

To her dismay, Poncho joined his brother and became an accomplice. He pranced around Ellie's side, practically head-butting her, before barking loudly and distracting the chicken in the process. They clucked out loud before hopping around and spreading their feathers in the air.

"Ah— hey! Knock it off, not you too Poncho!" Ellie pushed away Poncho's nose before sitting up and glaring at the two brothers. She rolled her eyes before sitting up and dusting off her ass.

"Damn, why are you two so big now? You two were just cute puppies a few months ago." She finally looked up and saw Missy sitting in place. She looked content, wagging her tail every now and then as she lay on the cushion Ellie had made for her.

"Missy you hear that? Your kids are killin' me!"

Her ear twitched and Missy looked at Ellie with a blank face. She licked her lips before sniffling and turning away.

Ellie's face flattened. "Talk about cold." She sighed before giving the chicken the rest of their food. "Alright alright, let me finish up here and I'll grab you some breakfast."

Buddy barked loudly before running off with Poncho on his tail. As the two brothers ran around in the field to use their energy, Ellie smiled before looking for the other unaccounted pup. When she rounded the corner where the wolf feed was, she spotted Estelle in the corner, napping away. Compared to her siblings, she was still a little smaller in size but was still growing well despite being the runt of the pack. Thankfully, Missy didn't mind her presence either so all was well for the small wolf family.

By the time Ellie was finally done feeding their furbabies, she had gathered a handful of freshly laid eggs before heading back inside and hitting up the shower. Once she cleaned up, she went into the kitchen and saw Dina cooking up some breakfast. She smiled before asking, "Hey beautiful, where's our son?" She went up behind her fiancé before kissing her neck.

"Hey," Dina nuzzled into Ellie before nodding her head upstairs. "He was still asleep so why rouse the little monster?"

That made Ellie chuckle. "Fair point."

"Mmhmm," Dina turned to face Ellie before cupping her cheek. She rubbed her freckles with her thumb before brushing her hands back and running them through her wet auburn hair. "You got up early today. I could have helped you feed them."

Ellie just shrugged. "I just… felt restless. Wanted to keep my hands busy and all." She blinked before looking at the ceiling and adding, "And let you sleep in."

Dina smiled warmly at her fiancé. "You're sweet…" She leaned in to kiss her lips. "But next time, let me help you. I don't want you straining yourself and catching a cold. Again."

"I was barely even sick!" Ellie defended before pulling away from Dina and walking toward the fridge.

"Sure you were," Dina teased back while shaking her head. "You were sniffling for days."

"Like you weren't?" She easily shot back with equal amounts of sass.

"At least I didn't wake JJ up with my sneeze."

"That's— urgh…" She had no retort before snagging a cup from the cupboard. "Whatever."

Dina tapped her ass before kissing her neck and pulling away. "I'll make us that omelet you like."

Ellie rolled her lips together. "Mmh, that sounds good. I'll… cut up some ham?"

"Sure, just don't fuck that up now."

"How would I fuck that up?!"

Her fiancé shrugged. "I don't know, cut it into cubes rather than stripes."

"For the last time, I can cook babe!"

Dina raised a challenging eyebrow. "So you don't want me to make you an omelet?"

"I can cook… but you'll always be better than me." She gave her a sleazy grin before adding, "Nothing beats mama's cooking."

Dina opened her mouth to say something just to be cut off by JJ's sharp cry which made them turn around. "I was going to say something but on second thought can you get him? I'll make you that cheese thing you like to."

"Oh heck yeah, consider it done."

Ellie quickly made her way upstairs before walking into their room. She went over to his crib and the second JJ saw Ellie, he stopped sobbing out loud. "Hey there grumpy pants, did you get lonely?" She quickly wiped his tear-stained face before picking him up. She held him closely by his stomach against her chest so that he was facing forward with her hand supporting his butt.

"Ready for breakfast bubba?" She bounced him up and down to soothe his residual cries. "Mama's making breakfast right now. Are you excited? I'm excited. Today's going to be a good day, I just know it." She made her way downstairs just as Dina chopped up some veggies.

"Hey, took you long enough." Dina announced before glancing at the two, "Did my sweet boy sleep good?"

Ellie began bouncing him up and down and JJ started giggling before letting out a loud, "Bah! Bah bah!"

That made his mommy giggle before she looked at him and asked. "Mmh? What was that? Yeah, yeah I know lil' man, your mama is super pretty this morning."

Dina smiled before shooting them a look. "Oh, is that what he said now?"

"Yup," Ellie popped the 'p' before adding, "Isn't that right JJ?"

JJ wiggled around in her arms before babbling some more. He let out this soft grunt before whining and wiggling his feet while waving his hand.

"See? He thinks you're pretty mama."

Rolling her eyes playfully, Dina laughed at her before turning on the stove. "Well thank you, JJ, mama thinks you're super handsome too."

Their son let out this cackle-like giggle which immediately made Ellie snort and bust out laughing. Following in her suit, Dina quickly laughed alongside her family before continuing on with breakfast. They ate their food in a reasonable amount of time and after they packed up their to-go packs, they nicely tucked JJ in a wrap to Ellie's chest before heading outside where Shimmer and Japan were chilling.

Dina raised an eyebrow when she noticed something before asking Ellie. "You think they're dating?"

Ellie shrugged her face before clarifying, "Who? Japan and Shimmer?"

"Yeah," her fiancé confirmed before adding, "Shimmer's awfully cuddly with Japan."

Her statement was confirmed when Ellie saw Shimmer rub up against Japan. "I mean… maybe? Not like they have that many options to choose from out here." She fanned her hand out to their farm.

Chuckling at that, Dina cooed at Japan before rubbing his neck. "Are you two dating?" She asked in a teasing voice before clicking her tongue at Shimmer. "You two make a great couple."

"Oh brother," Ellie rolled her eyes before hopping onto Shimmer and getting settled. "Any time now babe."

Dina started scratching Japan lightly before putting him again. He happily neighed as Dina started loading her go-pack into his saddle. "You think they've fucked yet?"

Ellie quickly covered JJ's ears. He was spaced out as usual but his eyes were beginning to get droopy as he drooled a little onto her shirt. "Dina!"

There was a playful smile on her lips. "What? Don't tell me you're not curious either." When Ellie shot her a blank look, she added, "Ya know," she clicked her tongue while gesturing her hand outward from her lower region.

"Dina."

"What, you know people saw it's huge."

Ellie sighed, "Our baby's doomed to be a pervert."

"Hey, he's not gonna be perverted."

"If he takes after your nasty ass, he will." Ellie sassy back jokingly before looking down at his big old eyes. "Right potato? Don't you think your mama is too much?" JJ blinked a few times before rolling his lips together and whining. "See? He thinks you're nasty too."

Dina rolled her eyes. "Fine fine, I'll tone it down since someone is such a baby."

"Excuse you, there is a baby here!" Her fiancé laughed at her reaction before Ellie huffed and tugged at Shimmer's reins. "Whatever, stop horsing around and hurry up."

"You did not just use a horse pun," Dina said as she hooked her foot into the saddle's stirrup and pulled herself up.

Ellie shrugged it off as she started a slow trot. "Wasn't really trying."

Dina lightly scoffed with a smile before catching up to Ellie's side. After a second, she leaned in closer before starting out of the blue. "Mmh? What's that Shimmer?" She then gasped abruptly before saying, "You don't say."

"Oh no." Ellie just eyed Dina, having a vague feeling where this was going.

"Ellie, Shimmer says we should find a bakery."

Rubbing her face, she looked her fiancé right in the eyes. "Why?"

Dina just smiled at her smugly before answering, "So she can go buy some thorough-bread."

A soft sigh came out of Ellie's mouth along with a small smile she was trying to stop. "I've created a monster."

"You only have yourself to blame."

"Hey, at least my puns have more style."

"Well, mine are amazing, thank you very much."

"You're such a dork."

"Takes one to know one."

Ellie shook her head with a smile before making a silly face at JJ. She made some kissy noises and after a while, they arrived in Jackson in due time. They left their horses in the stable and dropped off their belongings at Talia's place before eating an early lunch together. After that, they caught up on the town's most recent gossip, which honestly didn't compare to the drama they caused.

Just poor old Martina getting cheated on by that asshole, Thomas, and little Jack getting hit by a horse because he got too close (he was fine though), albeit, the most exciting news though was some twat named Jerry that got his ass handed to him by Ashley. He was getting too frisky with his hands and she had enough.

After that, the three of them went on a walk.

A walk to Jesse's grave.

With JJ.

His son whom he never got a chance to meet.

It was a good thing that Dina was carrying him there because Ellie was already having a hard time dragging her own feet there. She felt weaker than normal and would have probably dropped him. Her mind was even mush and by the time they somehow made it in front of his tombstone, reality set in.

Jesse was still here, buried six feet under in this cold tombstone and well, fuck. Ellie sucked in her breath and it wasn't until Dina grabbed her hand and gave her a warm squeeze that her lungs pulled it together and let out the air trapped inside. Dina's mouth parted and she said some things which Ellie couldn't understand until she faced his gravestone. She stared at it a second before speaking up.

"Well, we're here again."

There was this weird tension in the air and Ellie finally took in another deep breath before letting out a shaky huff. "Shit, this feels weird."

Dina turned her way and chuckled softly before bouncing JJ up and down. "It does feel weird."

The two of them stared at his tombstone, feeling bittersweet before Dina eventually breathed in and smiled.

"Hey, Jesse." She started before poking at JJ's chubby cheek, "I never got a chance to prove it to you but uh…" She paused and stared at a random stone on the ground before speaking up and giving him a slow rundown. "I wasn't kidding, I was pregnant with your child, and well… this is your son, JJ, short for Jesse Joel."

On cue, JJ let out this little whine and Dina bounced him up and down again before playfully pinching his nose.

"He's the most adorable nugget around who just turned eight months old not too long ago. He loves nap time and playtime and so far, he's not too picky with food, just a little messy but that's okay. He gets excited when he sees animals which Ellie and I have a bunch of, we got Shimmer and Japan, a herd of sheep, a small coup of chickens, hell, even a small pack of wolves." The last part was somewhat bitter and she glared at Ellie before quickly laughing it off. "I'm sure you would have loved him if you were still around."

Watching Dina boast about JJ to Jesse's gravestone was surreal and bittersweet. Nothing she said had been wrong though, Ellie agreed with everything Dina said. She was proud of JJ and the happy little goofball he was but sharing all of that with Jesse made it hard. She couldn't comprehend how Dina could have such warm eyes, informing him of the son he never met? Unlike her, Ellie thought about what she could share with Jesse but she drew blank, so it was weird that Dina could share all these stories with him without hesitation. Honestly, Ellie respected her for that. At least one of them could be normal.

Dina wasn't like Ellie.

Her fiancé was different and so much better than her. It seemed like Dina could go on and on, gushing about their family with pride. They stood in front of his grave for what felt like hours and Dina had done most of the talking. It wasn't until she ran out of things to say that the grave site grew quiet minus JJ babbling.

That silence was crushing Ellie and it made her chest tighten in pain as if she was suffocating beneath someone's knee. She couldn't take it, she had to escape. She took a deep breath through her nose. Everything was okay. She held it in for as long as possible before letting go of it with a soft sigh. After a second, her lips parted before she randomly spoke up in a shaky and bittersweet tone.

"There was… this one time that we were exploring this abandoned building." Dina turned to face her. "We were talking about random shit and somewhere along the line, I told him that he was handsome and all but he wasn't my type." She smiled at the memory before looking into Dina's eyes. "And you know what he said?" She paused for a second before continuing, "He asked if I wasn't into Asians and I said sure, that's the reason even though it wasn't the truth. He just wasn't in my ballpark. Didn't help that I hella had a crush on you for the longest time too."

Dina smiled before leaning in to kiss her lips. She giggled in their kiss before joking, "Good thing I'm not Asian."

That made Ellie snort. "Yeah, good thing."

Her fiancé quickly pulled her into a side hug and kissed her forehead. She looked up at the sky before kissing her neck again and again. After a second, she asked in a soft voice, "You okay?"

Ellie's eyes were moist but at least she wasn't crying. "Yeah…" She looked down and saw JJ's bored face. When he made eye contact with her, he immediately brightened up and let out a happy giggle which warmed her heart. She smiled before reassuring herself. "Yeah, I'm okay…"

Dina hummed before squeezing her tightly. "Okay." She kissed the back of her ear before snuggling against her and rubbing her back gingerly. "You're doing great."

Her voice was weak and quiet. "Yeah…?"

"Yeah," Dina kissed her freckled skin again. "I'm proud of you."

Ellie took a deep breath before sighing and turning away. "Okay…" She sniffled before pulling away from Dina. "I'm gonna… find Joel. He wanted to give me something."

"Okay," Dina smiled before repositioning JJ in her arms. He grunted before grabbing onto the collar of her shirt and tugging on it. A whine left his mouth before he buried his face into her neck. "I'll go ahead and head over to his grandparents' place then. They've been wanting him for a while now."

She forced herself to make a stiff smile. "Alright, I'll catch you later then."

"Yeah, love you."

"Love you too."

Ellie turned on her heels before walking away. She wasn't running away. She wasn't. She made it to Joel's in record time and as she raised her fist to knock on his door, she hesitated for a second. She quickly shook her head before pounding the door. It didn't take long and Joel opened the door looking as old as ever.

"Hey there kiddo, everything okay?" He was eyeing her cautiously but at least he wasn't one to press.

"Yeah, I'm okay."

"Cool," he stepped aside before nodding inside, "Come on in, I got a surprise for ya."

That made Ellie raise an eyebrow. "A surprise…?"

He hummed with a nod. "Tommy and I thought it'd be nice to have around."

Ellie followed Joel inside and they walked upstairs to where he had his gun locker. Her face flattened as she gave him a skeptical look. "You're not giving me a gun are you…"

Rather than responding with words, he opened the gun locker before handing her a shotgun. "For your protection.

"A shotgun?" She deadpanned, "Seriously? You're giving me a shotgun?"

"You said you ran into a wolf. What if you run into a pack? Besides, boars are dangerous too."

She couldn't help but laugh a little. "A little excessive though, don't you think? We already have hunting rifles and pistols."

"You can never be too prepared Ellie, one shot from this bad boy is enough to scare away a few stragglers."

"Or aggro them even more," she sarcastically spat back. He shot her this look before she brushed it off. "It's nothing."

"Anyways, why don't you go down to the gun range and test it out? Rodney knows about our arrangement."

"Okay…" She blinked before adding, "You comin'?"

Joel looked at her before shrugging. "If you want."

She picked at her thumb before looking at the ground. After a second, she looked back up before responding, "I think I'm good."

"Alright." He nodded before adding, "Let me know if you need me."

"Will do." She nodded as well before handing over the shotgun so Joel could pack it in the case. Once it was put away, he handed it to her. "Thanks."

Shortly after, she made her way to the gun range and once she was inside, as Joel had said, Rodney greeted her before pointing to the back with his thumb. Ellie made her way to her designated spot and true to his words, there were a decent amount of rounds for her to use. Since this wasn't the first time she had used this range, she set up the target before putting on some nose mufflers and readying herself for practice. She cocked the slide before holding up the gun up and eyeing the target with precision. Once she was ready with her shot, she pulled the trigger, getting shot back from the unexpected amount of force.

"Damn…" She breathed out before cocking the shotgun.

Readjusting her hold, Ellie changed her posture before aiming again. As long as you were within point-blank range, aim didn't really matter when handling a shotgun but it was good practice to know your gun. At least that was what Joel taught her and ever since he showed her how to shoot a gun, she found it somewhat relaxing and therapeutic. It helped her focus on one thing alone and made her mind sharper. At least until someone shot a round in her lane.

That made Ellie freeze before lowering her gun. She glanced to her side before seeing a group of guys, probably around her arm, staring at her like some show. Her instincts told her they were up to no good and that somehow made her nose flare. Of course, they had to ruin the fun that was finally setting in. She took off her ear muffler and set it down before glaring at them.

"What are you lookin' at?"

One of the three guys just laughed before whispering something and nudging his mate's arm. Ellie took a breath through her nose before setting down her shotgun. She turned her body toward them before practically growling at them.

"The fuck's your problem?"

The taller of the three chuckled before snickering at her. "Nothing, just strange seeing a girl here."

Oh for fuck's sake.

Ellie sighed before making eye contact. "And?"

He shook his head. "Nothing, was just worried about our safety, that's all. Not sure if a woman can handle that big toy." He nodded toward her shotgun. "A little too big for ya don't cha think?"

Her eyes shifted to their stations and none of them had anything impressive. Just a standard hunting rifle that couldn't compare to the specs Joel and her put together on her gun back at home. She scoffed before shaking her head.

"I don't think you're one to talk," she nodded toward their guns. "Looks fresh out of the box, are you sure it even works?"

That implication seemed to tick him off. "Oh trust me," he grabbed his gun before holding it in her direction. "This bad boy has seen his fair share of battles."

She couldn't help but roll her eyes. "'Battles' my ass, what are you? Some war hero?"

"What was that?" That ticked him off and he scoffed before grinning. "You must be new around here. Haven't seen you 'round before but I'm this town's best shot."

That comment immediately made her snort. "Sure you are."

Of course, that only angered him more and he had the audacity to point his gun at her. An eyebrow immediately shot up and Ellie ended up reaching backward to grab her gun.

"The fuck do you think you're doing?"

He just shrugged with a smug face. "Seems like you don't believe me." He cocked the gun, "I'll just have to show you a demonstration."

"You're fucking insane."

Ellie was about to pull her shotgun off the counter when an unexpected savior came to her recuse. One second, she was staring down a rifle's barrel, the next, Dina popped in out of nowhere, kicking him behind his knee and elbowing his face before disarming him and nabbing his gun. She raised the rifle, aiming at him, before speaking in a firm yet cold voice.

"You better back the fuck up unless you want a bullet through that thick skull of yours." She then pointed the gun off to the side, away from Ellie.

"Woah woah woah…" One of the friends tried smoothing as he backed up. "Let's not point guns at each other alright? It's not right."

Ellie's eyebrow twitched at the comment while Dina didn't even bat an eye.

"You're the one who pointed first." She shot back with a cold tone and serious face.

"Hey hey, it was just a joke sweetheart, no need to get your panties in a bunch." The other guy commented as if his friend hadn't done anything wrong.

Not believing her ears, Dina scoffed. "First of all, don't call me sweetheart. Second, you think pointing a gun at someone is a joke? Guns 101. If you're not prepared to be shot at, then don't aim it at someone."

"Hey now, let's be civil." The shit bag who pointed his gun at Ellie started. "Let's talk it out okay?"

From the corner of Dina's eye, she saw one of two guys reaching for his gun and Dina immediately cocked the gun before pulling the trigger. At the same time, Ellie had noticed that as well and she snatched her shotgun off the counter before pointing it at the three fucktards. Dina's shot hit the glass cover of a light which shattered upon impact. She immediately reloaded before aiming at them again.

That's finally when someone from the back came outside. "Whoa whoa whoa, what the fuck is happening here?" Clark, one of the employees asked as he tried assessing the situation. "Dina, Ellie, why don't you lower the guns?"

The cocky guy smirked. "These bitches are crazy! Stole my gun and is threatening us for no reason."

Dina and Ellie shot each onto this look before rolling their eyes.

Clark's eyebrows just creased. "The fuck is goin' on?"

Ellie was the first to speak up. "These fucktards pointed a gun at me and Dina came in and disarmed them before shooting the light."

"Lairs! They're lying, Clark!"

Clark looked back and forth between them before settling on Dina. "Dina?"

Dina just shrugged. "It's true, I came to get Ellie but saw one of these fuckers pointing their rifle at her."

"Oh great," Clark sighed before reaching for the phone. "Let me call the sheriff, why don't you girls head on out? I'll handle it from here."

Glancing back and forward between the scumbags and Clark, Dina sighed before disarming the gun, taking out the magazine, and ejecting the bullet before setting the slide. She then slammed down the rifle on the counter before walking to Ellie's side. She quickly helped her fiancé grab her things before grabbing her hand and pulling her out outside.

The guy just growled before shouting, "Where do you think you're going!"

Dina just flicked her middle finger at them before heading out the door and just when he was about to chase after them, Clark stood in front of him.

"The only place you dipshits are going is the slammers. No one fucking points a gun at someone in this range and you better watch your back. Those two aren't the two gals you wanna mess with in this town. Consider yourself lucky that you're still in one piece for now."

The second they were out the door, their feet began heavily crunching on the gravel. Dina had a tight grip on her hand and for once, Ellie felt as if she was going to trip over her own feet.

"Dina…"

Her fiancé looked upset and angry.

"Dina… Dina!"

They came to a stop and Dina turned to face Ellie with a crease on her forehead. "What the hell was that?"

Ellie only scratched her nose. "What was what?"

She pointed toward the gun range. "That! I came looking for you and Joel said you were down at the range. Why the hell was some bastard pointing his gun at you!"

Sighing on that note, Ellie tried pulling away but Dina still hadn't let go of her hand. "Just some sexist pig. Said some shit about having a 'too big' of a gun."

"You're fucking kidding me." The scowl on Dina's face only grew. "I knew I should've shot the sonuvabitch!"

"Babe…" Ellie took a step closer before pulling Dina in by her hips. "Please don't." She cupped her cheek before giving her a peck on the lips.

Dina's glare hardly subsided. "Maybe I should've jammed the stock into his stomach? Or better yet, shoot him in the foot!"

Ellie smiled before gently backing Dina up into the nearest wall. "Okay okay," once she had her fiancé pressed up against the wall, Ellie gave her a big smooch. "You were seriously hot back there."

Her lips finally curled into a smile and Dina chuckled before grabbing a hold of Ellie's waist. "Yeah?"

"Yeah," Ellie whispered without hesitation before leaning in and kissing her passionately, focused on their little world. Their lips parted again and again before she spoke in a quiet voice. "Like really hot."

Dina bit her lower lip before wrapping her arms around Ellie's shoulders. "Is it bad you're turning me on?"

"You're the one who started it."

Their kiss grew a little sloppy and their tongues brushed up against each other before a soft moan came from Dina's lips.

"Mmh…" She then tapped Ellie's back. "Okay, that's enough. Any more and you're gonna have to take me to bed."

Snorting at her comment, Ellie grinned and pecked her lips again. "I mean… Eugene's cabin is not that far away."

That made Dina roll her jaw.

Ellie's giddy smile never left as she looked up at the sky. "We can… smoke some weed since JJ's on solid food now."

This time, Dina licked her lips. "Don't tempt me like that El."

Her fiancé shrugged this time. "After we… confirm the quality, we can round some up and sell 'em to our regulars. Two in one situation."

Dina let out this cute giggle before patting Ellie's shoulder and kissing her cheek. "Okay, you have me sold." She pulled away before moving her lips and checking out Ellie's body. "And I may or may not have a surprise too."

"A surprise?"

"Yup," she popped the 'p' before grinning at her. "Something we'll both enjoy."

Whatever it was, it put a smile on Ellie's face. "Okay."

The small smile on Dina's face was more than enough to make Ellie's heart skip a beat. "I'm gonna have to grab something from Talia's… After that, we're free to head over to the cabin."

"Sounds perfect."

By the time the two of them were settled at the cabin, it was just past evening when they set foot inside the weed bunker. As they took off their jackets, Dina couldn't help but shoot Ellie a glance.

"Talk about déjà vu." Her tone was a little playful and flirtatious, foxy even.

Ellie's lips twitched up into a smile. "Yup."

They held eye contact for a moment before getting more comfortable. By the time they were unwinding and chilling, Ellie did the honors.
