Chapter 8*
The day dragged on, with the room filled with tense anticipation. Rodolphus's pain had become more frequent, his restlessness turning into sheer desperation. Each contraction felt like a tidal wave, crashing over him and leaving him gasping for breath.
Lucius stayed close, his eyes never leaving Rodolphus, who had begun pacing the living room. Rodolphus's breathing was ragged, a sheen of sweat covering his forehead. He gripped the back of the couch as another contraction hit, his knuckles turning white from the pressure. "I… I can't," Rodolphus panted, his voice hoarse from earlier cries. "It's too much."
"Just breathe, Rod," Lucius coaxed, brushing damp hair away from Rodolphus's face. "You're doing so well."
Suddenly, Rodolphus felt a sharp, wet sensation. He looked down to see his water breaking, a flood pooling on the floor beneath him. Panic flashed in his eyes. "Lucius!" he cried out, clutching at his stomach.
Lucius reacted immediately, waving his wand to clean up the mess and steadying Rodolphus. "It's okay, it's okay," he repeated, more to convince himself. "We're closer now. Just breathe."
Rodolphus's breathing was shallow, his chest heaving. "No, I need to push," he gasped, his voice strained with fear. He fell into a crouch, clutching Lucius's arm. The urge to push was overwhelming, an instinct he couldn't fight.
Lucius's mother stepped forward, her face a mix of calm and concern. "Go ahead, Rodolphus. When you're ready."
Rodolphus squeezed Lucius's hand, drawing strength from his partner's presence. He gritted his teeth and bore down, pushing with everything he had. Pain ripped through his body, sharp and unrelenting. "Fuck! It hurts!" he screamed, his voice raw.
"I know, I know," Lucius whispered, his voice breaking. He felt helpless, unable to do anything but hold Rodolphus's hand, offering what comfort he could.
"Again, Rodolphus," his mother urged, seeing the head crowning. "You're doing great. Just one more big push."
With a cry that tore from his very soul, Rodolphus pushed again. He felt the intense pressure release as the baby slipped out, his mother's hands catching the newborn. He collapsed against Lucius, his whole body trembling from the effort.
"There you go, that's one," Lucius's mother said gently, cleaning the baby and wrapping it in a soft blanket. The cries of the newborn filled the room, a small but powerful sound.
Rodolphus barely had time to register the first baby's cries before another contraction gripped him. His vision blurred, and he felt the world sway. "No, no, I can't," he mumbled, his strength waning. The pain was excruciating, pulling him back into the agony he thought had ended. He could feel his consciousness slipping, darkness creeping in at the edges of his vision.
"Rodolphus!" Lucius shouted, panic flaring. He grabbed Rodolphus's face, trying to keep him conscious. "Stay with me, love. You have to stay with me."
Rodolphus fought against the darkness, his breaths coming in short, desperate gasps. "Lucius," he managed to say, his voice barely audible. "Help me…"
Another contraction hit, and Rodolphus instinctively pushed, his body acting on its own. The pain was blinding, searing through his abdomen. He let out a guttural scream, feeling the second baby move.
Lucius's mother was ready, her hands steady as she guided the baby out. "Almost there, Rodolphus," she said soothingly. "Just one more push."
Rodolphus's entire body shook with fatigue, but he summoned the last of his strength. With a final, excruciating push, the second baby slipped free. The room was filled with the cries of his newborns and the labored breathing of Rodolphus.
Lucius pulled him close, his heart pounding. "You did it," he said, his voice choked with emotion. "It's over. You did it, love."
Rodolphus collapsed against him, tears mingling with sweat as he sobbed with relief and exhaustion. He could feel the warmth of the babies being placed beside him, their tiny cries filling the air. "Lucius…" he whispered, his voice trembling.
Lucius kissed his forehead, his own tears falling freely. "I'm so proud of you, Rodolphus. So proud."
As the twins' cries gradually quieted, Rodolphus finally allowed his eyes to close, his body succumbing to the much-needed rest. Lucius held him tightly, a mixture of relief and love overwhelming him as they lay together, their new family complete.
