Chapter 9*
Rodolphus slowly woke up to the soft murmurs of his children chatting. His eyes fluttered open, adjusting to the warm glow of the room. He saw Emmy and Adam perched beside the crib, their small hands reaching through the bars to touch the tiny fingers of the newborns. The sight brought a tender smile to his face. The twins, Izzy and Ben, were swaddled snugly in blankets, their eyes closed, and tiny hands occasionally twitching in sleep.
Lucius, who had been sitting nearby, keeping a watchful eye over both Rodolphus and the newborns, noticed his partner stirring. He moved closer, his hand gently brushing over Rodolphus's forehead. "Hey, love," Lucius said softly, his voice filled with warmth. "How do you feel?"
Rodolphus shifted slightly, wincing at the lingering soreness from the labor. The pain was still there, but it was duller now, overshadowed by the contentment of having his family around him. He managed a weak but genuine smile. "Tired, but okay," he murmured, his voice still thick with sleep. His gaze shifted to the crib, where Emmy and Adam were giggling softly at the twins' little noises. "Emmy, Adam, meet Izzy and Ben."
The children's faces lit up with excitement. Emmy, the older of the two, reached into the crib, carefully smoothing a hand over Izzy's head. "Hi, Izzy," she whispered, her voice filled with awe. Adam mimicked his sister, his chubby fingers gently touching Ben's tiny fist. "Hi, Ben," he echoed, his voice soft and affectionate. The love and curiosity in their eyes were palpable, and Rodolphus felt his heart swell with pride and happiness.
Lucius's parents, Harden and Abraxas, entered the room quietly, not wanting to disturb the moment. Their faces were lit up with smiles, radiating warmth and pride. "How are you feeling, Rodolphus?" Abraxas asked gently, his eyes full of concern. "You did wonderfully. They're absolutely adorable."
Rodolphus managed a chuckle, though it was weak. "Sore," he admitted, his eyes softening as he watched Emmy and Adam with their new siblings. "But it's worth it."
Lucius's face was a picture of pride and love. He leaned down, pressing a kiss to Rodolphus's forehead. "I'm so proud of you, Rod," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "You were amazing. Our family is perfect."
Rabastan, who had been standing quietly near the doorway, stepped forward. His usual stoic expression softened by a rare smile. "You really did great," he added, a hint of pride in his voice. He stepped closer to look at his newborn niece and nephew, his eyes showing a tenderness that was rarely seen.
"Thanks, everyone," Rodolphus replied, his voice filled with gratitude. His eyes were heavy, the exhaustion from labor still weighing on him. "I think… I think I'm going to sleep some more," he said, his eyes already starting to drift closed.
Harden and Abraxas nodded, understanding. "Rest well, Rodolphus," Abraxas said softly. "We'll take care of everything. You've earned this rest."
Lucius turned to his parents. "Could you help Emmy and Adam get ready for bed?" he asked. "I'll stay with Rodolphus."
"Of course," Harden agreed, placing a gentle hand on Emmy's shoulder. "Come along, kids. Let's give your parents some time to rest."
Emmy and Adam nodded, albeit reluctantly, their eyes lingering on the twins. "Can we see Izzy and Ben again tomorrow?" Adam asked, his voice hopeful.
Lucius smiled warmly. "Absolutely. They're your brother and sister, after all," he reassured them. "You'll have plenty of time with them."
With gentle understanding, the family began to leave the room. Rabastan cast one last look at Rodolphus and Lucius, a smile tugging at his lips before he slipped out. Harden and Abraxas led Emmy and Adam away, their voices fading down the hallway as they spoke about bedtime stories and what fun they'd have with the twins.
Lucius stayed by Rodolphus's side, watching as his partner's breathing steadied into a peaceful rhythm. He adjusted the blankets around Rodolphus, ensuring he was warm and comfortable. He then turned to the crib, looking down at his sleeping newborns. Izzy's tiny mouth was open in a perfect 'o' shape, while Ben's tiny hand had a grip on one of his sister's fingers. Lucius's heart swelled with love.
As the room quieted, Lucius sat down in the chair beside the bed, his hand gently resting on Rodolphus's. He looked around at his family—his exhausted but content partner, his sleeping newborns, the sound of his other children's laughter faint in the distance. He let out a contented sigh, feeling a profound sense of peace and happiness. "My family is perfect," he thought, his heart full.
Lucius closed his eyes for a moment, soaking in the quiet joy of the moment. His family was everything he had ever wanted. As he sat there, he knew without a doubt that whatever challenges came their way, they would face them together, stronger as a family.
