The planning for this wedding was thrown into overdrive. Everyone was trying to give as much of a normal wedding as possible. Luckily for me, I found the perfect dress with the help of a fashionista friend from Washington. I wasn't sure why we were rushing it. Bucky and I had plenty of time to redo our wedding for something we wanted.
"How are you feeling about all of this?" Natasha asked, standing beside me as we arranged the final details of the wedding.
"I'm nervous because all of this is happening so fast because of my fucking crazy mom. I'm scared because I know that this whole thing could blow up in our faces," I sighed.
"Alex, Bucky loves you. He wants this because he wants you. He doesn't want to make you feel afraid of living. He wants to spend his life with you and have everything that comes with that," Natasha said.
"Thanks, Nat, I really needed to hear that," I smiled at her.
"You're welcome, Lexi," Natasha said with a smile.
As I witnessed everything come together, I smiled because I knew that everything was playing out the way it was supposed to be. All I wanted was to have a semi-peaceful life where the worst thing I had to deal with was some dumb supervillain trying to take over the world. Every single one of them fails, so it is super amusing to watch.
"So, how is my bride to be?" Bucky asked.
"Exhausted, I just want this wedding planning to be over with. I hate all the fuss and excitement that people make about weddings," I sighed, moving to coil myself around him and hug him.
"Just think, tomorrow we get married," Bucky whispered in my ear.
"I know, and I know all of this is happening so fast, but I love you, James," I whispered.
"I love you too, Alexandra," Bucky replied, kissing my forehead.
We walked through the tower until we arrived in the main living area, and I smiled at seeing everyone finally sitting down and relaxing for the day. I was so grateful for the wonderful people in my life; they were all doing so much to save me from something my fucking crazy ass mother had planned.
"So Alex, are you excited for our little party tonight?" Wanda asked.
"Yeah, I am," I said.
"Why don't you take her to take a nap before the party tonight? She looks like she's about to pass out where she stands," Dad said, coming into the room.
"A nap sounds wonderful," I mumbled sleepily.
"Come on then, doll," Bucky said, helping me to my feet.
"Thanks, Bucky," I mumbled.
Bucky nodded and led me out of the room and into my bedroom. When I saw my bed, I just wanted to flop face down on it and sleep for an eon. I hated feeling like I had to move constantly to accomplish something. I liked peace and taking my time doing things; I saw no need to rush or move in haste. I fell asleep with Bucky dozing off right beside me, though that sleep didn't last long. Bucky started thrashing and panicking.
"Bucky, you're all right," I whispered as I watched Steve and the rest of the team come to the door. Bucky looked at me, and the look on his face broke me, but I couldn't say it. Instinctively, I pulled him close to me. I felt eyes on me, and I knew Steve was watching me.
"Alex?" Bucky said as if he were testing out his voice, unsure of its sound to his own ears.
"I'm right here; I'm not leaving," I whispered. Bucky hugged me closer to him like I was his lifeline. I didn't know what had startled him so badly, but I knew he needed me, "Can you tell me what happened?" I asked him softly.
"Nightmare," Bucky said, still regaining some composure.
"Do you wanna talk about it?" I asked him.
"Alone, please…" Bucky asked.
Steve herded everyone away from the door and back to their getting ready for the party. Bucky still looked rather tense, and I wanted to make sure he was all right.
"So what was this nightmare about?" I asked, sitting next to him on the bed.
"I had a nightmare that I lost you…" Bucky wanted to speak more but cut himself off.
"Buck, listen to me. The assholes who took my sight had intended to kill me, and they didn't succeed. If that couldn't take me from this earth, nothing will until I allow it to. I love you, James Buchanan Barnes." I kissed him, and something in me was set afire.
"I love you too." He looked at me with so much emotion in his eyes that I couldn't resist. I leaned in and connected our lips. Bucky's response was immediate: I felt like I was in heaven.
"We should probably get ready now," I reminded Bucky, smiling.
"Are you still sure about this, the whole getting married like this thing?" Bucky asked.
"Of course, I'm sure, Buck; while this is rather unconventional, I know that I love you and am more than happy to marry you," I said, grinning at him. Bucky kissed me again quickly before pulling away.
"I love you so much, but you're right. I should probably get ready," Bucky said, taking his leave to go back to his room to get ready. I smiled to myself after Bucky left; it made me realize that despite the circumstances, I really did love Bucky and would have been happy to marry him at any time as soon as he said the words. I put on my party dress, looked in the mirror at my appearance, and smiled. This wasn't the usual modern-day party dress. It looked like a page straight from the forties. I smiled at the dress, but after a moment, my sight still wandered to my completely blind and sightless eyes. Most days, because of my powers, I forget that my human eyes can not see a thing. I tried not to focus on them, but when I actually noticed them, it was hard for me to see anything but them.
Taking a deep breath, I steeled myself and took the first step out of my room. I almost felt like I couldn't breathe; I was so nervous because I had never been dressed that way. As I'm taking a few more deep breaths, Natasha makes her way to the gathering.
"You look beautiful, Alex," Natasha complimented.
"Thanks," I said, letting out a deep breath.
"You wanna walk down together? The guys are already down there."
"Sure, thank you," I said, smiling and gaining the last bit of confidence I needed to proceed with it.
As Natasha and I walked into the room, everyone's attention turned to us. I felt my nerves rise as Bucky looked at me. His eyes were watering slightly, and I knew that I had made him very happy. That was the look and the type of reaction I was hoping for; I wanted him to know that I loved every part of him.
"You look beautiful," Bucky said, coming to take my hands in his.
"Thank you, Bucky," I smiled at him.
"So Alex, are you nervous about tomorrow?" Bruce asked me as he came over to talk to us.
"I'm a little bit nervous, but I wouldn't want it to be anybody else," I said.
"I know the last few months have been anything but ordinary, but they've been well worth it," Bucky said, kissing my temple. Bruce walked away, leaving Bucky and me alone once again.
"You really do look good dressed that way, Alex. Clothes from the forties really fit you," Bucky said softly, like velvet.
"I thought you'd like this outfit because I know I do. I find it surprisingly comfortable," I said, smiling at him. By the end of the night, everyone except for Bucky, Steve, and myself were fucking hammered and passed out. The three of us were sitting and watching some crappy chick flick. As our eyes began to droop, it became evident that the three of us were extremely exhausted.
