Lorelai had spent the time since Sookie had left showering, doing her hair and makeup (soft and subtle, just the way Luke liked) and picking out what to wear. Her stomach was in knots waiting for Sookie's call. She was dying to know what Sookie had discovered in her fishing expedition. Maybe this wasn't fair to Luke, and of course she would tell him about the baby either way, but Lorelai had enough surprises today and needed to know what she was walking into.
As she pulled on her jeans the phone rang. She grabbed it from the bed and turned it on, "Sookie?"
"Honey, he loves you."
Lorelai felt every muscle in her body relax.
"Your mother and Chris got into his head and he feels you deserve better than what he can offer you, but he wants to be with you so badly."
Lorelai exhaled and nodded, "Thank you Sookie! You really are the bestest friend a girl could ask for."
"Go get him Honey!"
"How will I ever thank you Sook?"
"You will obviously name your baby after me," Sookie laughed.
There was a knock at Lorelai's door.
"Okay, I gotta go, someone's here and I have to get rid of them so I can go to Luke's. I'll talk to you later to fill you in." Lorelai said on her way down the stairs.
"Bye Sweetie, love you,"
"Love you too." Lorelai smiled as she hung up and placed the phone on the table before answering the door. She was shocked to see Luke on the other side.
"Hi," she said with a confused grin.
"Sorry, I know we agreed that you would come to me. But I wanted to do this in private"
Lorelai stepped aside and motioned for him to come in, "Do what?"
"Talk, I guess. You know, work this out."
Lorelai's heart skipped a beat, she was excited that he wanted to work things out, she knew what Sookie said, but it's different hearing it from Luke himself.
"Can I get you something to drink," she offered.
"No, just come sit,'' he gestured to the couch. "I know you said that you needed to talk to me, but can I go first?"
"Uh sure," Lorelai nodded as she sat on the other end of the couch.
"I'm sorry, I was wrong. I told you I was all in and then I at the first sign of trouble -"
"You were out," she said softly.
He bowed his head, "Yeah. And I've been miserable without you. I was mad, hurt, confused. But I never stopped loving you."
Lorelai touched his arm and he looked at her, "I love you too." she smiled. "I'm so sorry that you got hurt. Hurricane Emily leaves quite a mess in her wake."
Luke scoffed, "Let's not forget Chris. He's a big part of this too. He'll always be."
"Luke, he's Rory's Dad. But he means nothing to me anymore. He's in the same boat as my Mom as far as I'm concerned. Rory is an adult and can choose to have whatever relationship she wants with her father, doesn't mean I have to have a relationship with him."
Luke nodded, "I know you believe that now. But what happens when some time passes? You have history with this guy. And I'm sure having a kid with someone creates a bond."
Lorelai knew this was her 'in' to the conversation she really needed to have.
"Luke, I really need to tell you something. The reason why I wanted to talk to you today,"
"Yeah, sure."
"So I've been feeling a little weird the past few days and Sookie finally convinced me to go to the doctor."
A look of concern washed over Luke's face. Sookie came to see him, to push him to get back together with Lorelai. Did she do this because Lorelai is sick and will need support? Luke didn't know if he could survive losing Lorelai, flashes of his parents' different stages of illnesses ran through his mind. He took a deep breath to summon all the strength he could.
Lorelai placed a hand on Luke's to ease the fear that was written all over his face.
"I'm pregnant."
Luke was obviously now stunned, "You're . . . who's the . . ."
Lorelai let out the breath she didn't realize she was holding in, "Luke, I'm six weeks along, it's your baby."
The room was filled with a deafening silence, and it was what Lorelai feared. They had never seriously talked about having their own kids. He's not known to be cuddly or what anyone would expect to be a 'kid person'. But she saw the love and protectiveness he had for Rory. From the time they first met when Rory was ten, he made her laugh and gave her a safe space. Often Lorelai wished Chris was more like Luke where Rory was concerned. But she really didn't know how this news would hit him.
"Luke? Did you hear me?" She inched closer to him on the couch.
"You're . . . We're having a baby?" Luke asked, finally making eye contact with her.
She nodded with tears in her eyes, "I know this wasn't planned. Something we never really talked about."
He scooched closer and took her face in his hands, "I have wanted a life with you for so long. When we were together, it was the happiest time of my life. Of course I want to be with you, I want to marry you and have kids with you."
Lorelai laughed through her tears, "I've missed you so much! I can't believe we're having a baby."
Luke's face suddenly fell and Lorelai could see the wheels in his brain turning, "Six weeks ago?" He asked softly.
"Yeah," she nodded.
"My Dark Day," he whispered.
More tears escaped Lorelai's eyes, "Yeah."
"Wow,' he sighed. "I can never hate that day again." He looked lovingly into her eyes, cupped her face with his hands and began kissing her tears away. "You took the darkest day of every year and gave it light. No matter how much I think of my Father on that day now, there will also always be this. You sat with me and listened to stories about my family. You didn't try to change how I wanted to grieve, you just comforted me. You were perfect that night. And now forever more I'll have a reminder of that night."
"I love you," was all she could say in response.
"Let's go upstairs," he smiled.
"You go on," Lorelai nodded towards the stairs. "I'll be right there, I just want to call Sookie quickly."
"Tell her Thanks from me," he winked.

The next morning Lorelai woke happier than she ever remembered being. She lay there thinking about the previous night. She had rushed upstairs and found Luke looking around the second floor knocking on walls with a concerned look on his face. When she asked what was wrong, he told her that he was looking around to see about renovations. He then talked about making her bedroom bigger, turning into a master bathroom. He talked about adding another bathroom and two more bedrooms, saying that there was no reason they couldn't have their baby, get married, stay in her house and possibly have more children and still be comfortable there. Her eyes welled up as he spoke about their future, not expecting her to leave the house she loved so much. She had to stop him when he said that he wanted to check with Rory about if she wanted to keep her room or if he should look into expanding the kitchen and giving her a suite within the attic. He went on and on about how great the space was up there and that they weren't using it to the full potential. The fact that her grown up, away at college daughter was still part of his planning, how he respected Rory to want her input and ensure her comfort, she had to drag him into the bedroom immediately. From that point on there was not much talking.
"You're awake early," Luke mused. He was on his back, with Lorelai curled against his side. She was using his chest as a pillow, his arm around her gently stroking her back.
"Mmmm, I guess." She sighed, "I was sleeping a lot the last few weeks, I hated being awake and not able to talk to you."
"Yeah, I hated being awake and not hearing your voice," he smiled.
He kissed her head and began to climb out from under her, "I'm going to start making us breakfast."
She held onto his hand, "Or you could stay in bed with me a little while longer and you could make us brunch."
He smiled, slightly shaking his head as he crawled on top of her.
