Chapter One

Arrival Day

Billy never liked fights yet here, he was, dressed in blue spandex, fighting monsters of clay, animated to life by a sorceress from outer space!

He didn't know how his body moved as it did, skilfully avoiding getting hit by punches and kicks narrowly and striking back with carefully calculated attacks from his lance. This grace and fluidity… this certainly wasn't his own! His body seemed to move on auto-pilot, as if it had a mind of it's own. His senses were hyper aware, able to hear the sound of wind shifting behind his back and able to dodge being clobbered by a clay fist just in time.

He certainly wasn't this adept at fighting this morning when he was being slammed into his locker by Bulk and Skull!

Whatever this was… this wasn't him. It felt like he was possessed by something else, except it wasn't encroaching his free will exactly… It was more like his consciousness was playing a video game and his body was preprogramed with an innate knowledge of martial arts and highly effective fighting moves, which was impossible because he hadn't trained in martial arts at all and all efforts to do even the simplest feats of gymnastics had ended up in him falling flat on his face or accidentally injuring himself.

It dawned on him… It wasn't him but the coin behind all this! The mysterious golden coin etched with the symbol of triceratops, that had appeared out of the blue, forgive the pun, in his bag when he returned home and the moment he touched it, a small hologram of a blue head had appeared, nearly giving him a heart attack. That head, calling himself Zordon had explained to him that he was chosen to be a superhero to stop an evil witch called Rita Repulsa from destroying the planet because he was worthy, whatever that meant. Before disappearing, Zordon had told him to call upon "Triceratops" to activate his armour, say "Power Down" to deactivate it and that he would be joined by four others in his quest to save the world.

It all felt so surreal but he was holding the strange coin in his hand and had never done any drugs in his life… So, unless he was having some sort of mental breakdown, all of this was certainly happening, and then not even five minutes later, he heard it. The skies darkening as a woman's face appeared… Calling herself Rita Repulsa, she demanded Earth's surrender, just like Zordon said she would.

He wasn't imagining this. His phone was blowing up with notifications from new sites and messages from the school groups. His father called him in to see the news which was playing the footage on repeat.

Apparently, the face hadn't just appeared on Angel Grove, but in every city in every country and had spoken in every language known to mankind… This kind of thing was straight out of comic books or movies.

And then, it happened.

A skyscraper in down town Angel Grove crumbled to dust as a space ship appeared before them and thousands of golems dropped out of it.

Billy had been panicking. He shut himself in his room, not doing what to do. He could stay aloof… He wasn't a superhero, couldn't be in any possible scenario, but something compelled him back to the strange medallion. Zordon had said he was worthy of the power with absolute certainty. Some part of him felt bad for letting that guy down. Then he heard a shout from downstairs, the sound of doors being smashed… his dad!

He instinctively knew it was the golems.

All he needed to say was "Triceratops!" and he had yelled it and rushed down, his blood pumping with adrenaline as he had cut the golems which had cornered his father down with his lance. His father was too shell shocked to even understand what was going on but before he could explain, he was dragged out of the building by three other golems. The streets were crawling with these creatures and he was stuck all alone, a shining light of blue armour in the middle of a sea of grey golems. He had been fighting nonstop, stopping the golems from entering houses and directing them away from citizens… But it seemed like he has been doing it nonstop. No matter how many cronies he took down, others seemed to appear out of thin air. It was a good thing the suit was somehow preventing his body from getting fatigued because he knew this amount of prolonged exercise would have him hyperventilating otherwise.

Suddenly, the space ship which had hovered in the skies ever since dispatching the armies of clay soldiers, let out a screeching noise that hurt his ears as a purple beam shot out from it's centre and started incinerating anything in it's trajectory, including the clay soldiers as it progressively moved nearer to where he was…

Oh no, Billy realised with a gulp. It was targeting him.

The armour had granted him fighting prowess and protection against physical assaults but he doubted it would save him from being vapourised by that!

He tried to run away, ducking past the golems, only to realise no matter the beam was still following him.

Billy stopped in his tracks as he heard a cry. The golems had caught hold of a young boy, not older than six and were dragging him towards the beam. Other golems were holding back his parents as they were yelling.

This was a trap.

He knew that. Watching countless superhero films and reading a lifetime's worth of comics had taught him that but he couldn't not do anything.

He was the one with the armour.

"Let him go!" He shouted; his voice warbled by his armour yet still perfectly understandable. The golems didn't pay him any heed but the boy's parents looked up at him, their eyes wide and scared.

"Save him please!" The mother cried desperately.

He didn't wait. The beam was edging closer to the child.

He jumped towards them, twirling his lance and striking the golems around him. One of the golems holding the child let go, launching themselves at him like a raving beast, the impact knocking him over and forcing him to let go of his lance.

"No!" he murmured, grappling for his lance, which was lost as other golems jumped on top of him, pinning him to the ground. He watched from the corner of his eyes as the golem swung the child towards the beam.

"NO!" He yelled, trying to shake off the foot soldiers.

Everything seemed to slow down.

The child flailing his arms wildly, eyes wide with fear and apprehension, tears staining his cheeks as he fell ever so closer to the energy beam.

Just then, the beam disappeared and a blur of yellow caught the child before he hit the ground. It was another armoured warrior, just like him, except they had a tiger on their helmet instead of a triceratops. They placed the child safely on the ground before lunging at the golem, metallic claws extending from their gloved fingers, slashing through the automaton.

There was the sound of a deafening explosion and Billy looked up to see smoke from the space ship, as something else collided with it… something which looked like a giant mechanical pink pterodactyl.

The pterodactyl wrecked the ship with it's talons before flapping it's wings and swerving mid-air, to toss the ship in the upper atmosphere, where it exploded in a huge combustion.

"Need a hand?"

Billy had been so shocked at seeing the pterodactyl that he hadn't noticed that the yellow warrior had taken care of the golems restraining him. He looked up to see them extending their hands towards him.

"Thank you." Billy said gratefully, taking their hand as they helped him up to his feet.

He saw the young boy run towards his parents.

The streets were filled with the remains of the golems which had attacked them and with the ship gone, no new ones had appeared.

The giant pterodactyl flew away but a beam of pink appeared beside them… a warrior like them, but with pink armour and a helmet modelled after a pterodactyl.

"That was fun!" They quipped.

"Now what do we do?" The yellow warrior said.

"You die!" A cruel voice echoed across the streets as a golden blur knocked them off their feet.

Billy looked up to see a blue skinned alien with feline features wearing golden armour and pointing a very sharp blade at them.

"I am Goldar, the general of Queen Repulsa's armies and your executioner!" He growled at them with a predatory gleam in his eyes.

Billy turned to look at the other warriors, and though he couldn't see their faces, he knew they were as unnerved as he was.

There was an alien announcing that he was there to kill them, right after they had taken down an army of golems and a spaceship.

The other two nodded at each other and tilted their head at him.

"We are in this together." The yellow warrior told him.

He took a deep breath as he nodded back at them.

They got back on their feet. Billy's eyes widened as he felt the urge to hold out his arm. To his surprise, his lance reappeared in them.

He looked sideways to see he wasn't the only one with weapons. Yellow held a pair of daggers while Pink had a bow.

"We won't go down without a fight." Yellow snarled at Goldar just as he charged at them.

The three nodded at each other as they ran at the monster, ready to fight.
