Episode 3: Chapter 8

Sophie bit her lip as she considered her predicament. It surprisingly had nothing to do with Carver and their suspicions of him. They were still seeking more evidence against him and trying to find more stuff that would lead to clues. Sophie had checked what belongings of her parents had survived but shockingly did not see anything connecting her parents to Carver, but she hadn't checked everything. Yet none of this was her problem right now. Instead her problem was in fact her own sister. Minerva stood, looking severe in her black T-shirt, leggings and sneakers, a red jacket being her only non-black item of clothing. She was being critical right now of Sophie's own clothes, namely a pair of jean shorts, a white oversized T-shirt which kind of covered the shorts and a pair of black sneakers to finish.

"Look at you, dressing like this, this isn't you." She was saying. "It's that's boy isn't it, he's already started trying to get you to dress to your liking."

Sophie glared. "Kyle is not doing anything to me, Minerva. The only person who's trying to control how I dress or anything like that, is you."

"How dare you-!?"

"Very easily." Sophie snapped. "You just can't accept that I'm happy, Kyle and I are dating, we're happy, I'm happier than I've been in a long time, I'm a much better person, I'm finally comfortable with myself, even my scar, I-"

"He is taking advantage of you, while cheating on you." Minerva cut her off angrily.

Sophie was stunned by that, she glared, unable to believe Minerva had the audacity to say something like that.

Sophie shook her head and did her best to stay calm, she couldn't let her emotions get the better of her.

"You have some nerve, Minerva, making such bold lies about Kyle." She said firmly.

"Um hello, are you blind, you saw it with your own eyes." Minerva snapped. "At the party, with that skank, Rondi, he-"

Sophie couldn't contain herself hearing that. "Excuse me, are you stupid or just wilfully blind, he was drugged, she was trying to rape him, it was all confirmed!"

Minerva snarled and stood up, suddenly getting into Sophie's face.

"I've had enough of this, I'm trying to save you from that boy, you will not see him again or-!"

"Get out of my face!" Sophie yelled. "You have no right to tell me to do anything, I am eighteen, I can do as I please, I'm an adult, I am in love with Kyle and you can't stop me from seeing him. I've had it up to here with you!"

With that she pushed past Minerva who let out a surprised yelp and tried to yell something, only for Sophie to storm out of the house, slamming the door behind her. She had decided enough was enough, she wasn't going to put up with Minerva's treatment any longer. It took her a while to get to her destination, enough for her to calm down and therefore had a clear head when she knocked on Kyle's door. It was Cindy who answered the door, dressed casually in a purple T-shirt, black jeans and black socks.

"Sophie, hello dear." She greeted the girl warmly.

Sophie managed a smile, just. "Hi Ms. Sherman, um...is Kyle in?"

Cindy looked at her worriedly. "Of course, come in...are you okay, you look upset."

Sophie sighed but felt calmer already when she saw Kyle, again casually dressed in a dark red T-shirt, black basketball shorts and white socks. She walked through to the living room and prepared to tell them everything.

She finally finished the story and was being hugged by Kyle, taking deep breaths to calm herself down.

"I can't believe she'd say stuff like that, do that…?" He remarked. "Crazy bitch, I mean...sorry mom."

Cindy shook her head. "Don't apologize Kyle, you were almost raped and this stupid girl is saying such things about you, making it seem like you are the guilty one."
Sophie sighed and shook her head. "I couldn't take it anymore, I just left, but…"

"Well, that reminds me...we better head things off, if your sister is indeed like you say." Cindy said.

This confused the teens but they left it and Sophie settled in to rest her head on Kyle's shoulder as they hugged while Cindy went off and made some phone calls, most notably to the police. It was clear she was trying to make sure Sophie and Kyle's side of the story was heard before Minerva could muddy the waters with her lies and dissembling, to cut off any avenue Minerva could use to try and cause trouble for Kyle or force Sophie to return to her.

"There." Cindy said, coming back to the much happier teens. "Now Minerva can't make any false claims against us, we already have our side of the story out, so she's going to have to make things very convincing."

Sophie smiled, knowing Minerva well enough to know that she'd never manage that, if anything, she'd make her situation worse.

It seemed they were right for some time later there was a lot of heavy knocking at the door of the Sherman house. The three of them went together to stand united as Cindy answered it, revealing the irate Minerva on the other side.

"How could you do this to me, how dare you lie about me?!" She cried out. "Sophie, you're not safe here, you need to-"

Sophie cut her off. "Oh stop, you're so embarrassingly obvious, Minnie. In fact, the way you carry on, your control freak actions. I'm safer here than I ever was with you."

"How, you can't-"

"I can and it's for my good I did. If this keeps up, I will have to intervene to protect Tenn from you as well, got that." Sophie said.

Minerva spluttered. "Protect, that's not...I am not a threat to Tenn, he-"

"You are, just like you are to me. You keep trying to make everything be your way or no way." Sophie explained firmly. "Now back off...you realize you're going to lose Tenn and I as your siblings at this rate."

"But I'm just trying to keep you safe!"

"No, you're not." Sophie said. "You're just trying to control me, well I'm done with it, goodbye Minerva."

Minerva stood frozen in shock and disbelief as Sophie turned and walked away. After an awkward pause, Cindy closed the door, leaving Minerva to recover and leave, horrified and dismayed at what had just happened, but unable to figure out why this just happened.
