A sudden and inexplicable pair

AN: First fic I have ever written, and first time writing in awhile, don't murder me please. Do I even have to write the disclaimer above? I'm just mimicking what I see others do. Constructive criticism is always welcome. Also, I'm just uploading this with minimal editing. It's 5 AM, I'm tired.

As the sun rose, and cast its light upon beacon academy's towering peaks, its residents awakened and began their day. Some showered first, others brushed their teeth first, and a few psycho's ate first. That was the thing about this place, its inhabitants were routine. People woke up, got ready, ate, and then went to class. People sat with their friends, hated enemies, and hung out with who they belonged with. However, recently something had disrupted this cycle, nobody knew when it had happened exactly, all they knew is it did in fact happen. And no one understood it.

Blake Belladonna and Jaune Arc were talking to each other. That alone would be something to take note of. That was not all that they did, they walked to class together, went to the library together, they even went out to Vale together. Now, just what the hell was going on?

Blake Belladonna was an 'enigmatic beauty' as some would say. She was quiet, intelligent, mysterious, liked books, was intimidating to approach, and didn't like conversation with 99% of remnant's population. She was also really paranoid, didn't trust people and used to be a terrorist.

Jaune Arc was almost as far as you could get to the opposite. He rambled, liked video games and comic books, and was to be frank, a bit of a moron. He also had basically zero skill on the battlefield. He was simply a normal guy.

So, for the life of her, Yang Xiao Long couldn't figure out why the two of them would be friends. It seemed like an impossibility, a joke that whatever god's existed was playing on the world. Then again, she and Blake were pretty different and they got along. But she just couldn't see it, Blake was by all accounts a badass, and Jaune was... Jaune. Tall, scraggly and a little wimpy.

And so, Yang found herself mulling over all this information alone in her team's dorm room. She had theories ranging from mundane to fantastical, so much so that she was starting to form a headache, so she resigned herself to ignorance, for now.

Jaune had found himself in some odd reality where Blake Belladonna was talking to him. A lot.

It started when Jaune was in the library, this wasn't a particularly shocking sight, he and his team studied here all the time. This time however, his team was not here and he was not studying. He was here for relaxation, he was here to read. Hell had truly frozen over. However, despite what everyone thought, Jaune liked to read, a lot. Sure, these days he preferred quick, easy to get through comics, but that was only because his schedule was so packed now.

Back when he still lived in Ansel, he loved to read novels. Sitting down and being immersed into these worlds for hours. Becoming familiar with the characters, their personalities, goals, hardships and heartbreak. It was something truly special to him. And recently, he got the itch to read once more. Coming to the library, he found a book he had been meaning to read. 'The man with two souls' he had heard good things about it from a writer he liked, he had it on his 'to read list' perhaps now was time to cross it off.

He reached for it before noticing another, more familiar book next to it on the shelf. 'Ninja's of love' He stared at it for a few moments. "What the heck is this doing here? In a School!?" This was not expected, this book had awakened him to... certain tastes, it was one of his favorites and held a special place in his heart. A hand grabbing it broke him out of his reminiscing.

He looked to see who would grab this lovely, perfect, filth ridden story and found, "Blake?" Amber eyes, seemingly startled, darted to look at him. "Jaune? I didn't know your team was studying right now." Jaune exhaled an airy laugh. "I'm here on my own, looking to get around to some books on my list."

Blake just stared. For several moments. One could say she was staring at him like he grew a second head. "Uhh, Blake? You ok?" Her mouth opened, then closed as she was seemingly at a loss for words. "You read?" She blurted out, before blushing a little at how direct she was being. Jaune just smiled while scratching the back of his neck.

"Yep, I love reading, always have." He grabbed 'The man with two souls' and held it up to her. "I've been meaning to get around to this for a while. Heard it was great from an author I like" Jaune could tell Blake was shocked, he just sighed "is it that hard to believe I enjoy novels?" This seemed to make Blake actually capable of speech. "No... ok, yes, sorry but I just never imagined you would like reading. I thought you only liked reading comics like Ruby."

They moved to a table in the corner of the library to discuss in a more private location. "Sooooo, Ninja's of love huh?" Jaune saw Blake go through the five stages of grief in the span of 5 seconds, before she resigned to look down at her shoes. "You know about it?" Her voice was low and meek sounding, Jaune decided to come clean and save her some embarrassment. "Yeah, it's one of my favorites." He could see her bow move, as her cat ears perked up. Blakes head followed suit and she stared at him, wide eyed.

"You... like NoL?" Jaune's face took on a slight pink hue. "Yeah" came his simple reply

And that's how it started. He and Blake had bonded over their mutual love for literature and Ninja's of love. He felt great. Finding this connection to Blake, who until recently, he was pretty sure hadn't even said a word to him, made him feel some type of way. Having someone to talk to about books he liked, books she liked, making recommendations to one another, going out for new book releases in Vale together and, of course, talking about Ninjas of Love as well, was brand new to him.

When he was younger he couldn't relate to a lot of the kids who only liked things with pictures in them, they were often too shallow and lacked the substance he enjoyed in his stories. He loved comics, he always will, but they just weren't the same as a good solid book. But now, with Blake, it was like a breath of fresh air.

It felt like they were always together now. They sat together for lunch, walked together to class, and whenever they had free time, they would sit in their little corner in the library and get lost in their own world. Even though they were mostly silent, the only noise being the turning of pages, it felt better than reading alone.

Something concerning was happening however, Jaune started to see Blake in a new light. Ok, if he was being honest with himself, he was in love with her. How could he not fall for her? She was one of the most beautiful woman he had ever laid eyes on, she whooped ass in combat class, she was one of the sweetest girls he had ever met once you got past her thorny shell, they shared a love for reading, and, to top it off, she read Ninja's of Love, not only that, she loved it, just like him.

So yeah, Jaune Arc was in love with Blake Belladonna, "What a joke." He shoved his face into his hands. There was just no universe where she would feel the same, it was honestly torture, knowing that he was to forever be just her friend. His chest hurting where his heart happened to be became a daily occurrence. But when he saw Blake, talked to her, read with her, saw her smile, it all washed away. He never thought he could feel this way about another person. All thoughts of Weiss vanished. something that the heiress was most likely thankful for.

Jaune sighed. It just wasn't meant to be, she was Blake Belladonna, and he was... Jaune. He would never risk her friendship by confessing his feelings for her. The edge of the roof started to become a bit more alluring these days. But he would never brood for too long till Blake came around and made his days not so dark. He would just have to accept his lot in life. But that didn't stop him from hating Sun, even though he did notice Blake was talking to him less. Maybe? ... no. It had to be a coincidence.

Blake loved reading. It was her special time, her oasis, she valued it as much as her loved ones. But she liked to read alone, reading near someone wasn't the end of the world, but it wasn't the ideal conditions for her most beloved pastime. That was, until she met Jaune in the library that day. Finding out that the goofy knight loved reading, and not just comics was a shock to her. But the depth of his love for literature and books was earth shattering.

And to top it off, he had read, and loved, Ninja's of Love. Honestly, it felt contrived, where was he all her life. She did feel a little guilty, they had been going to beacon together for 2 years and they had barely talked to one another, she had written him off as just another moron. But with tastes this good, how could he be?

She couldn't help herself, she always wanted to be around him, to discuss new books, old ones, and maybe some she should give a shot. But as they hung out more, they started talking about other things, their childhoods, classes, and other hobbies. The change from him being 'that guy' who her friend was friends with, to one of her closest friends who she felt she could confide in about almost anything gave her whiplash.

It was an unassuming day, around a month after she met Jaune in the library, she was sitting in their spot waiting for him to show up. She was nose deep into 'The man with four souls' not to be confused with 'The man with two souls. 2' when she felt her cat ears twitching, she had memorized the sound of his footsteps by now. She looked up to see him flashing that goofy smile of his towards her, book in hand, when, a Warmth filled her, she felt her heart quicken its pace, as he got closer to her. He sat and they gave their greetings before he pulled out his latest book and started to read.

"What the hell was that?" That was not a common feeling for her the last time she felt something even similar to that was with... Adam. But that didn't have the Warmth she was feeling now, more of just a quickening heart rate and a flushed face. Was she- She could hardly bring herself to say it, those words, those two damn words. Was she, 'In love?'

She was looking at her book, but she didn't see, didn't read, she could not focus. She dared a glance at him, he was focusing on his own book 'The man with one soul' she observed him, the slight movements he would make. She could tell when he was at an exciting scene, he would shift in his seat. She could tell when he was confused, his eyes would narrow, and his brow would furrow. The way he would lick his lips, when he went to the next page. "His lips" They looked so soft, she imagined what they would feel like, they were soft yes, but she imagined they had a certain firmness to them tha- "WHOA, what in the world am I thinking about." She hid her now scarlet colored face behind her book. She paused, coming to a realization.

"I love him." She realized it suddenly, but it made so much sense. It was like it was a simple fact in life, the sky was blue, the moon was shattered, the grass was green, and she was in love with Jaune Arc. "huh" if you told her two months ago that she would fall for him, she would've laughed in your face. Now, it made sense, too much sense if she was being honest, now she found the idea of not loving him odd.

But... Did he feel the same? "No way." Someone so pure and noble would never fall for her, an ex terrorist, a coward who ran when times got tough. Besides, he liked Weiss. Although she had noticed that he stopped asking her out and stopped devising plans to ask her out. Maybe? ... no. It had to be a coincidence.

Blake couldn't take it anymore. It had been about a month since she had realized how she felt about Jaune before it became too much to bear. Every time she thought about him it hurt a little, like a hand was strangling her heart. The thought that they could never be together was simply too much. Whenever she was with him it was better, him just being there with her calmed her down, but it was still there, like a low buzz in the back of her mind, like a dark presence, unseen, but always there, lingering, lurking.

She realized what she had to do. She had to ask him out. To confess her undying love for him, he had to know just how deeply she felt for him. But she didn't know how to go about it. So, she begrudgingly went to the one person who could help her.

She opened the door to her dorm, finding her target alone in there, laying on her bed playing with her scroll. "Hey kit-cat." She sighed, this was going to be the second hardest thing she ever had to do, actually asking Jaune out would be number one, but this was a close second.

"Hey Yang, I... need your advice" Yang quickly rolled off her top bunk bed and sat on Blakes bed just below hers. She patted the space next to her, signaling Blake to take a seat. "I thought you would never ask!" Yang was too happy about this. Blake hung her head low as she made her way to the bed, she had truly become too desperate if she was asking Yang Xiao Long for relationship advice.

Blake sat and just stared at the floor for a few moments before opening her mouth. "Well, there's this guy I know and... I kinda wanna ask him out, but I don't know how to go about it" Yang's eyes lit up and she gasped, "You're finally asking him out!?" Blake's head shot up and she looked at Yang with wide eyes, "You knew?" Yang scoffed, "Of course I knew, I mean, it was kinda obvious. If you ask me, I think you should just corner him and ask him out."

God, was it? Did everyone know? Did Jaune know!? Then maybe he did know, and was just avoiding it hoping she would give up on him because he didn't feel the same. Blake's head hung low. "But, what if he doesn't like me? Our friendship would be ruined." Yang shot her an odd look. "Uhh, trust me Blake, he likes you too."

Blake shot up, now standing. "Really!?" Yang had never seen the moody girl give such a strong reaction to anything before. Yang just chuckled and Blake took that as her cue to leave. Her mind was set, she was going to get Jaune to the roof, and confess there. She closed the door behind her, leaving a smiling Yang alone. "Ahh, young love. 'm glad she's FINALLY getting with Sun, he's been following her around with puppy eyes for long enough, but... they haven't really talked in a bit right? OHHHHH probably cause Blakely was so hung up on how to ask him, what a cute kitty. They'll make a good couple.

Jaune couldn't take it anymore. His unrequited love for Blake was eating him alive. He could hardly focus on anything, anything but her, he watched her a lot, he tried to stop cause it was a little creepy. But he just couldn't help it, the way she would brush the hair out of her eyes and tuck it behind her ear, the way her eyes would light up whenever she was reading an exciting scene, the way her lips would pout whenever they had to stop reading to attend to their studently duties.

She was just too damn cute, it made his heart feel like it was battered and bruised, he couldn't take this, he had to do something, he had to tell her. But how? she would almost assuredly not feel the same, there was just no way a girl like her would like a guy like him, right? Well, it didn't matter, if he didn't confess to her, he was likely to drop dead of a heart attack someday soon. But first, he needed to get advice, from the guy he knew to be 100% in touch with his emotions.

He walked into his teams dorm room, to find the man himself sitting on his bed, evidently he got Jaune's message to meet him in their room, alone. "Ren, sorry to drag you here like this, but I need to get your advice for something, something really important" This seemed to grab his friends attention. Ren gave him a small nod "I'm glad you came to me Jaune" Jaune nodded back before sitting on his bed across from Ren.

"Ok, Uhh, I really want to ask out... this girl, but I don't know what to say, or do. Hell, I doubt she even likes me back." Ren hummed, "Is it Weiss?" Jaune looked confused for a second, "No? I gave up on her awhile ago." Ren smiled and nodded. "Ok, why do you think this girl wouldn't like you." Jaune sighed and looked at the ground. "Well, I mean, she's just so great, I mean, she's smart, pretty, strong, I mean... I just couldn't see how she could be interested in me. And asking her out could ruin out friendship, that would... gods, that would crush me."

Ren chuckled lowly, before walking over to Jaune and putting a hand on his shoulder. "Jaune, you're a good guy, and a great friend, I'm sure whoever 'this girl' is would be delighted to date you. Jaune looked up at him with doubt in his eyes, "How do you know that though? Bla- this girl might just want to be friends, which would definitely be ruined if I ask her out." Ren just smiled at him, "Trust me Jaune, she likes you." Jaune stared, mouth opening and closing like a fish. "Y- You knew?" Ren sighed and sat down next you Jaune. "Jaune, just trust me on this, she likes you."

Jaune got up and started heading towards the door in an instant. Just before turning the doorknob, he looked over his shoulder at Ren, "Thanks man, I'm gonna go ask her. Right now." Ren smiled at the now closed door, glad he could help his friends find happiness. "I guess Pyrrha won't have to wait for him much longer" The boy mused to himself.

As Jaune left his dorm room, he got a message on his scroll from Blake, that simply said "Meet me on the roof in 10 minutes" Jaune's heart started to beat faster, this was really happening, he was doing this. It seemed crazy, he should just call off his plan and keep his feelings locked up where they could never be found. But he needed to do this, he wouldn't be able to live with himself if he never told her how he felt.

He felt a pit in his stomach the whole way to Beacons roof. Getting there 8 minutes early, surprised to see Blake was already there, sitting on the edge looking out towards Vale. Her ribbon was off, letting him see her ears twitch when he opened the door. Blake turned to look at him, her amber eyes enthralling him like they always did. She smiled, that smile... he couldn't explain what it made him feel in words, words would sell it short.

She stood and turned to face him. Silence reigned, making his heart's brisk pace almost deafening. He clenched his fists, praying to whatever god or gods that existed to bless him. "Bla-" "Ja-" They spoke at the same time, the pair chuckled at the cliché. "You can go first." Blake said, once again reminding him of the herculean task ahead of him.

He had this, he could do this. "Blake." He took a purposeful step towards her. "Blake, I don't know how to say this, so ill just use as little words as possible." He had his arms at his sides, looking like a kid who was about to get a verbal dressing down from a parent.

"Blake, I love you." Wow, he said it, he really said it. He was surprised with himself, usually he would just give up and call it a day. Blake just stared at him. His stomach sank, and his heart felt like it was being ran through a wood chipper. "Does she not feel the same? Was Ren wrong?" "Of course he was wrong, you idiot! Did you really think Blake Belladonna would like you? Now you've ruined your friendship for nothing dumbass.

While Jaune was mentally scolding himself, he failed to notice Blake run at him, catching him off guard and making him lose his balance when she rammed into him, they fell together, her on top of him. He looked up at her, confusion dominating his facial features. Before He felt something warm on his lips. Dear god. She was kissing him. He couldn't think, his senses being overloaded by the intoxicating and highly addictive drug called 'Blake.' Realizing his brain wouldn't work no matter how hard he tried, he resigned himself to not thinking, just doing. Kissing her back like she was his only source of oxygen.

He lost track of time. It could have been one minute or one hour before they finally broke apart. His mind was still foggy, failing to think of something to say, he resorted to just smiling like an idiot at her. She laughed before hugging him and burying her head in his chest. He wrapped his arms around her, and just sat there, basking in her presence. They didn't need to talk, they always were comfortable with silence, if it was good enough for reading, it was good enough for confessing your love for someone.

The RWY and NPR of teams RWBY and JNPR were confused when they got a message from Jaune and Blake respectively, that they should all meet in RWBY's dorm for something. Yang and Ren looked like they knew something, Yang having a smug smile on her face. They were all wondering why they were called here when the door opening cut off all chatter. Blake and Jaune walked in together, hand in hand, both were smiling. All six people in the room just stared at them expectedly, wondering what the heck they were sitting around waiting for.

"We're dating!" Jaune said excitedly. Blake averted her eyes with a faint blush, unfamiliar with so much attention.

"..." No one spoke. No one gasped. No one even breathed. Until six voices shouted out with such an intense volume, all of Vale and some of Atlas heard them

"WHAT!?"

AN: Well, that's it. Took me two nights to write this, I like it and hate it. Writing romance is odd. It is currently 5 AM while I'm writing this. And I just wanted to get this done. I love the Knightshade pairing and just wrote this on a whim. Sorry if that's obvious, this is my first time writing fanfic so I feel like this is destined to be bad, I also have little experience writing romance so I'm expecting this to be a bit of a train wreck. How did I do? Was it bad? Mid? The best thing since sliced bread? -NeroCaus
