Chapter 2: A New Day, A New Challenge

The sun, with its early morning rays, cast a golden hue over Vacuo, breathing life into the bustling downtown slums and the towering Shade Academy. The city was already stirring to life, but Ruby had almost slept through the dawn. Her dreams had been filled with echoes of her recent experiences—her Ascension, the Tree, and the vision of her mother on that fateful mission with Raven, the one she never returned from.

As she lay in bed, the remnants of those dreams lingered in her mind, leaving her with unsettling questions. Was everything that happened her mother's fault, or was it all just a coincidence? Ruby didn't know which was true, and the uncertainty gnawed at her. She had accepted herself in the Tree, found a semblance of peace there, but now, back in Remnant, she wasn't sure if she could live up to the person she had become.

With a deep breath, Ruby pushed those thoughts aside and forced herself out of bed. The day awaited her, and with it, new challenges that she had to face head-on. She couldn't afford to dwell on the past or let doubts cloud her mind.

After getting dressed and shaking off the remnants of sleep, Ruby stepped out of her room and into the common area where the rest of Team RWBY and Team JNPR were already gathered. The sight of her friends brought a small smile to her face—familiar, comforting faces in a world that often felt chaotic and uncertain.

"Morning, everyone," Ruby greeted, her voice still a bit groggy but carrying a warmth that hadn't been there the night before.

"Morning, Ruby!" Nora called out cheerfully, already full of energy despite the early hour.

Weiss, ever the early riser, gave Ruby a small nod, her expression a mix of concern and determination. Blake and Yang exchanged a glance, sensing the lingering tension in their leader, but choosing not to press her on it just yet.

"Ready for another day?" Jaune asked, his tone light but his eyes serious. He, too, was aware of the weight they all carried, but he was determined to face whatever came next with his friends by his side.

Ruby nodded, trying to shake off the lingering doubts and focus on the task at hand. "Yeah, I'm ready. Let's see what Vacuo has in store for us today."

After breakfast, Team RWBY and Team JNPR made their way to the courtyard where they had agreed to meet up with Qrow. As they approached, they saw him deep in conversation with a tall, imposing figure—Theodore, the Headmaster of Shade Academy. The two were discussing recent events, and as the teams drew closer, they caught snippets of the conversation.

"The return of Team RWBYJ has had a noticeable impact on the city," Theodore was saying, his tone thoughtful. "When they came back, there was a shift in the atmosphere. The city feels a little more positive, more hopeful. Grimm attacks are going down, and they're not as frequent as usual. But we can't afford to let our guard down. With the Crown having escaped from prison, we don't know what their plans are. We have to double our efforts to keep the Summer Maiden's identity a secret. And there's another concern—they might target Ruby. She's become a symbol of our unity, of our alliance. That makes her a prime target."

Qrow nodded gravely, understanding the weight of Theodore's words. "We'll keep her safe," he replied. "We've all got each other's backs."

As they finished speaking, they noticed the teams approaching. Qrow smiled and waved them over. "Everyone, this is Theodore, the Headmaster of Shade Academy and one of the members of the Inner Circle."

Theodore turned to the group, his expression softening into a warm smile. "Don't worry, I'm not going to be like Ironwood. After everything that happened, I'm doing my best not to repeat his mistakes." He extended a hand to Ruby. "It's good to finally meet you—you're the girl who brought the world together even more than anyone else. Your actions have inspired countless people."

Ruby hesitated for a moment, still adjusting to the idea that she had become such an important figure. But she smiled and took his hand, shaking it firmly. "Thank you, sir. We're here to help in any way we can."

Theodore nodded approvingly. "We've got a lot of work to do, and I'm glad to have you all on board. Vacuo is resilient, but we need to stay vigilant, especially with everything that's happening. The Crown's escape has everyone on edge, and we need to be prepared for whatever they're planning. And Ruby, as much as you're a symbol of hope, you're also a target. We'll need to keep that in mind as we move forward."

The teams exchanged glances, the gravity of the situation settling over them. But there was also a sense of resolve. They had faced impossible odds before, and they had come through it stronger. They would do so again.

Theodore continued, "For now, let's focus on fortifying our defenses and keeping morale high. The people of Vacuo need to see that we're united and ready for whatever comes next. And remember, no matter how tough things get, we can't lose hope."

With that, the group began to discuss their plans for the day, ready to take on the challenges that lay ahead. The sun was fully risen now, casting its light over the city—a reminder that a new day had begun, bringing with it new challenges and new opportunities to make a difference.

Ruby approached Yang with a serious expression, her voice tinged with hesitation. "Yang, I need to talk to you," she said softly.

Yang, sensing the gravity of the situation, nodded and followed her sister to a quieter spot where they could speak privately. "What's up, Ruby?" she asked, concern already creeping into her voice.

Ruby took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts before speaking. "When I went through the Ascension, I had a vision of Mom. I saw her on the mission she went on with Raven the night she disappeared... and her death."

Yang's eyes widened in shock. "What? You saw Mom? Ruby, what happened to Summer? All we've ever known is that she's... gone."

Ruby nodded, her expression pained. "Yeah, I did. But there's more to it, Yang. Do you remember that Grimm we faced? The one that was tough and intelligent?"

"Yeah, I remember," Yang replied, a hint of unease creeping into her voice. "What about it?"

Ruby hesitated for a moment, then continued, her voice barely above a whisper. "That Grimm... it was once a person, a Silver-Eyed Warrior like me."

Yang's face paled as the realization hit her. "Are you saying... could Mom be one of those monsters?"

Ruby's heart ached as she saw the fear and confusion in Yang's eyes. "I don't know for sure, Yang. But it's possible. Mom might not be a monster, but what if something happened to her? What if she was turned into one of those creatures?"

Yang clenched her fists, struggling to process the revelation. The idea that their mother, who had always been a beacon of strength and love in their memories, could have suffered such a fate was almost too much to bear. "We need to find out the truth, Ruby," Yang said firmly, her voice steady despite the turmoil she felt inside. "We need to talk to Raven. She might know what really happened to Mom."

Ruby nodded, her resolve matching her sister's. "You're right. Raven was there. She might have answers we've been searching for all this time."

Yang placed a hand on Ruby's shoulder, offering her support. "No matter what we find out, we'll face it together, Ruby. We owe it to Mom—and to ourselves—to know the truth."

Ruby looked up at her sister, grateful for her strength and determination. "Thank you, Yang. We'll find out what happened to Mom, one way or another."

"Raven has so many questions to answer," Yang said, her voice filled with a mix of frustration and anticipation.

"Are you two okay?" Weiss asked, her concern evident as she looked between Ruby and Yang.

Ruby and Yang both nodded. "Yes," they said in unison. Ruby added, "We just need to talk a bit."

Weiss nodded in understanding. "Well, Oscar needs us because the news wants to have an interview with you, Ruby."

Ruby felt a flutter of nerves at the thought of being interviewed. She had never been entirely comfortable with the spotlight. "The news?" she echoed, a bit anxious.

Weiss offered her a reassuring smile. "Yes, but you'll be fine. You've handled worse."

Ruby felt a knot of nervousness tighten in her stomach. She wasn't fond of interviews, especially knowing the weight of the questions that might come her way. But she steeled herself and followed Weiss and the others to the location where the interview was set to take place.

As the interview began, Ruby found herself sitting in front of the camera, feeling the weight of the moment press down on her. The interviewer, a composed and sharp-looking reporter, didn't waste any time getting to the point.

"Miss Rose," the interviewer began, "you've become a celebrity and a symbol for all the united forces of the kingdoms. Your message has inspired murals, and people are beginning to see you as a paragon. Many are asking for your autograph. But there are others, particularly some in the higher-ups of Atlas, who disagree with your actions. Some believe you are responsible for the fall of Atlas. Is it true you were part of General Ironwood's inner circle, and did you lie to him about the truth regarding Salem?"

Ruby hesitated, feeling the weight of the question. She took a deep breath and answered, "Yes, I did lie to him. But the truth is, I learned about Salem's immortality from Ozpin. I believed that if Ironwood knew the truth, he wouldn't have helped us. He might have given up before we even had a chance to fight."

She paused, her voice growing more somber. "I could have told him the truth. It was my mistake to keep it from him. But what really pushed him to the brink wasn't just my lie. It was Cinder. She infiltrated his office and left him a message—a chess piece, a taunt that she was always one step ahead. That might have been the final straw that drove him to... to go over the edge."

Ruby's voice wavered as she continued, "Should I have told him the truth? Maybe. But I didn't know he would go this far. What he did—sabotaging our attempt to save Mantle—left us with no choice but to retrieve the Relic of Creation to save the people of both Atlas and Mantle. I don't know if everyone will accept our decisions, but we did what we thought was right in the moment."

The interviewer nodded, acknowledging the complexity of the situation. "You did send the message that warned the world about the imminent threat of Salem and her Grimm forces. That message unified the world's militaries and Huntsmen in a united offensive against the greatest threat to our world. You may have doubts, but you did a lot to unite us and to prepare us for what's to come. The people thank you, Ruby. We all do."

Ruby managed a small, grateful smile. "Thank you," she replied, her voice soft but sincere. "I just hope that what we've done will make a difference, and that together, we can protect the future of our world."

The interview concluded with a sense of gravity, but also with a glimmer of hope. Ruby knew that she had made mistakes, but she also knew that she couldn't dwell on them. There was still so much to do, and so much to fight for. And as long as she had her friends and allies by her side, she would keep moving forward.
