After a hard day's work ruling Mandalore and taking care of Olivia, Obi-Wan Kenobi and his beautiful wife Duchess Satine were both ready to get to bed.
Since the day they got married, Obi-Wan and Satine followed a very special routine when they got ready for bed. The usual stuff: wash up, brush teeth and hair, get into pajamas, that stuff. But, being the loving couple they were, they always said goodnight in their own special way with a little making out and cuddling in a… special way.
It might have been in part because the old Jedi Code forbade him from doing so, but every time Obi-Wan kissed his beloved Satine, he went all in, feeling her soft lips against his, never wanting to stop. Every time they kissed, each one was always better than the last. And Satine felt the same way. She'd initially been very unsure about her husband's beard. It hid a lot of his handsome face, but it also somehow made him more cuddly.
"Don't stop, Obi." Satine sighed as her husband stopped for air.
And Obi-Wan held his wife closer and was about to kiss her again, but just before their lips could touch.
Waa!
Olivia could be heard crying over the baby monitor. Obi-Wan was a little startled at first. But, when he realized crying was the only thing he heard over the monitor and nothing else, he felt some relief. It'd been only a few days since he and Satine returned to the palace, but Obi-Wan was still traumatized by the fact that Olivia had been kidnapped. If he hadn't been able to get her back, he didn't know what he'd do. Now that she was back, he and Satine were more protective of her than ever.
"I've got her this time, my dear." Obi-Wan climbed out of bed.
Sure enough, Olivia was crying as she lay in her crib. Her father gently petted her little head to soothe her.
"Shh. Shh. There now, Olivia. Daddy's here."
But Olivia didn't stop crying, and just squirmed in her little blanket, prompting her father to gently pick her up and rock her in his arms. She wasn't hungry, and her diaper was clean. What could be wrong? Obi-Wan wondered.
"What is it, Olivia? What is it?" Obi-Wan cooed.
Olivia cried again.
"Are you scared, being in here by yourself?"
Obi-Wan thought, what if Olivia was still scared by what happened not that long ago. Olivia may have been only a month old now, but it appeared somehow she had her first traumatic memory in the form of being kidnapped, and now being in the nursery, in her crib, all by herself was the trigger for her crying. It made sense, as this happened for the last few nights since returning from the Temple, where she'd shared a room with her parents.
"It's going to be okay, Olivia. Those monsters can't hurt you anymore." Obi-Wan promised. "Mommy and Daddy aren't going to let anyone take you away again."
Olivia was still crying, so Obi-Wan proceeded to give her a pacifier, which calmed her for a second, but she kept crying. That was when Obi-Wan had an idea to get his baby back to sleep.
"Shh. Settle down, my Baby Girl."
Obi-Wan sat down in a rocking chair, kissed Olivia's head and gently rocked her to soothe her crying again and gently rocked her as he sang a special song just for her.
Obi-Wan:
Evening is a-falling
So rest your weary head
Don't cry, little baby
Sleep tight in your bed
The songbirds are a-nestling
Way up in the trees
The scent of springtime flowers
Floating on the breeze
The full moon is a-shining
In the sky above
Hush now, little darling
Bundled up with love
Olivia closed her little eyes as her father finished his song. Obi-Wan kissed her head once more and proceeded to place her back into her crib and head back to his room. But shortly after he left, Olivia started crying again. So, Obi-Wan got up and rocked her again. Olivia fell asleep again, but she woke up again after Obi-Wan left her again. Obi-Wan went back again, Olivia still wouldn't stay asleep.
"Somehow, I think you're going to be the death of me." Obi-Wan said tiredly, sitting in the rocking chair with Olivia in his arms again.
The next morning, Satine found herself alone in bed. She got up and went to check on Olivia in the nursery, but was instead met by an unexpected sight.
Obi-Wan was leaning back into the rocking chair as Olivia slept peacefully in his arms. It was perhaps the most adorable sight Satine had ever seen.
Olivia scrunched her little nose suddenly, and sneezed, which woke Obi-Wan right up.
"I'm up! I'm up." Obi-Wan gasped, and Olivia started crying again. "Oh, come on!"
"Obi-Wan, what happened?"
Obi-Wan told Satine all about the previous night, how Olivia simply refused to sleep in her room by herself, and it was likely because she associated it with the memory of being kidnapped. So, when she woke him for the third time, he slept in the rocking chair, holding her in his arms when that proved to be what kept her asleep through the night.
"Let me hold my baby," said Satine, taking the baby girl into her arms. "Good morning, Olivia."
The baby only responded with crying.
"There, there. Mommy's here."
Olivia continued crying as Satine held her over her shoulder and gently patted her back.
"I think someone wants her breakfast. Is that right, Olivia?" Satine kissed her baby's little head, while Obi-Wan tiredly picked himself out of the chair.
Obi-Wan stretched out his back; no amount of having to make due with what he had and sometimes having to sleep on the floor or the ground during the war could make him adapt to sleeping in a rocking chair with a baby in his arms.
Thankfully, Olivia seemed to calm down once a bottle of milk was warmed up and being fed to her.
Obi-Wan couldn't believe how difficult it was proving to take care of a baby. He loved Olivia, but taking care of her was not easy, even compared to everything he'd faced in the war. Obi-Wan had been trained for lightsaber duels, defusing explosives, and constantly getting shot at. But feeding, changing diapers, and being woken up five times a night at three in the morning to settle a baby's crying… those were a real battle.
Olivia finished her milk, and Satine happily held her and patted her back until she burped.
"Excuse you, little one." Satine nuzzled her baby's tiny nose.
"How is it that you gave birth, yet you're not as exhausted as I am?" Obi-Wan groaned.
"You have been taking more shifts when Olivia has woken up in the middle of the night." Satine smiled.
It was true. Ever since Olivia was born, Obi-Wan had taken the night shift with Olivia, not letting Satine get out of bed if the baby cried because she needed a change or to be rocked. But, Obi-Wan said it was because he knew how exhausted Satine was being both a leader to her people and dealing with her pregnancy and then giving birth. She could barely pick herself up for hours after giving birth, so she needed all the rest she could get, but it looked like her husband was getting less rest.
"Obi-Wan. I know you're trying to be a good husband, but Olivia is my baby too." Satine said. "She requires a mother's love to help her as she grows."
"It's not just that." Obi-Wan sighed. "I… I worry sometimes… that I'm not able to be the father Olivia deserves."
Satine couldn't believe what her husband just told her.
Obi-Wan had raised Anakin, and he turned out okay. Although Anakin wasn't a baby when Obi-Wan started to raise him, and Anakin was raised by his mother the first nine years of his life. Although Obi-Wan didn't have to change Anakin's diapers, feed him a bottle, or rock him to sleep, being a father wasn't an easy job. Like any father, Obi-Wan had to take care of many aspects of raising Anakin: making sure he ate right, getting him to his classes and making sure he got his assignments done efficiently and on time, and making sure he was clean too.
Obi-Wan remembered getting to watch Anakin grow, he was like a really little kid when he got to see water in a large abundance. Seeing his first rainfall, Anakin rushed out, wanting to catch raindrops on his tongue and to splash in the puddles. And when Obi-Wan gave the boy a bath for the first time, he remembered Anakin being even more fascinated when he saw bubbles for the first time. Obi-Wan was a bit surprised to learn soap wasn't given to slaves, but it did explain why Anakin didn't exactly smell fresh as a daisy back then. But, Obi-Wan also faced the problem of getting Anakin out of the tub. Anakin was a sweet child, but he could also be a handful when he wanted to be.
Anakin didn't always listen to Obi-Wan, much like a lot of kids did with their parents, but Obi-Wan always did his best to be a good parent. Now that Obi-Wan was an actual father with a baby of his own, he put a lot of pressure on himself to be a perfect father. Having grown up being the golden child of the Jedi Order, it was no surprise Obi-Wan strove for perfection in everything he did from how he dressed to how he acted, how he did in classes and on missions when he was younger, and with keeping a steady routine. It was pretty much all work, no play for him growing up; like he didn't know how to just kick back and relax sometimes.
"Obi-Wan, you are a wonderful father." Satine said. "You've done so much for Olivia since before she was born. And you were willing to risk your life to save her when she was in danger. If that isn't a good father, I don't know what is."
Olivia started crying again, making Obi-Wan sigh.
"Oh dear." Satine said. "I think someone needs a change."
So, Satine took the baby to be changed, but Olivia got a little fussy when she was placed on the table. It seemed Olivia really liked to be held, but her parents couldn't do that while changing her diaper.
"Shh. Settle down, Olivia." Obi-Wan soothed while Satine unbuttoned the baby's onesie.
"Obi-Wan, watch her while I get a clean diaper, please." Satine said.
And Obi-Wan was left to the baby, who was crying again.
Obi-Wan wasn't sure what to do; Olivia needed to learn to not be scared of being set down. So, Obi-Wan picked up a little rattle and shook it. It looked like a cute little bee.
"Busy buzzy bee," sang Obi-Wan, shaking the rattle again.
Olivia looked up at the bumblebee rattle and started to grab it and yank it from her father's hand.
"My, you are very strong, aren't you?" Obi-Wan chuckled, especially when Olivia placed the rattle in her mouth and started sucking on it.
Obi-Wan gently stroked the little bit of hair on Olivia's little head. It was so sweet to look at that baby girl now. So small, so innocent.
"There we are," said Satine as Olivia was now in a clean diaper and placed in a new onesie.
"All clean now, Olivia." Obi-Wan said, picking up his daughter and giving her some kisses.
Olivia cooed and curiously touched her father's beard with her little hands. Satine chuckled.
"It looks as though she's not so sure about the beard either." Satine teased.
"Well, she's only seen me with it." Obi-Wan said. "I don't think she would recognize me without it, would you, Olivia?"
Olivia responded by grabbing her father's nose, making both of her parents laugh.
That night, as bedtime came about again, Obi-Wan was once again asleep with his beautiful wife by his side, only for the sound of crying to come over the monitor again, and he was about to get up, until Satine stopped him.
"No, no, Obi-Wan." Satine said. "It's my turn to take care of Olivia. You need rest too."
So, Satine got up to go and take care of the baby.
Obi-Wan sighed as he lay back down; Satine was right. He was a good father and was determined to give Olivia the loving father she deserved, but he would need to be rested to do that, and to allow her to have her equally loving mother to have a part in raising her as well, including helping her when she woke up in the middle of the night.
Short, I know. But I did my best. I'm open to requests for this story. Please review. :)
