Chapter 4: The interview

The building was old, something that probably was built during the 40s given the exterior, honestly it looked abandoned but its windows were blocked out. Yet this place had come highly recommended, Ted Grant was once big news in the city the Starling City southpaw, he was known as back in his boxing days.

Stepping forward, she entered the dingy old gym. The place was dimly lit, with a boxing ring at the center, a series of punching bags to one side, on the other weight equipment of various shapes, and on the second floor what looked like an indoor track.

"Can I help you?" A male voice caught her attention. Laurel turned around, to see a Latino man probably only a few years older than herself. "Ted Grant, I presume?"

"Yes, I'm Ted Grant. What can I do for you ..." he gestured looking for a name.

"Hi, I'm Dinah Laurel Lance," Laurel responded.

"So you want to fight Dinah? Do you want some training?" He asked, knowing the woman's reputation as a lawyer friend of the very people he worked with every day in this gym.

"It's Laurel. And yeah, I wanna learn how to fight, I've been kidnapped one too many times, rattling the cages of various scumbags that hurt this city" she responded.

"Alright Dinah," Ted said leaving her deeper into the gym where they stopped at a table "Black or Red," he asked.

"Black, and it's Laurel" she answered.

Ted smirked at this, thinking this woman certainly did have the fire, and teaching her was going to be fun.

"Oliver I told you, I'm not taking that job" Felicity announced as she entered Oliver's office.

"Felicity, will you hold on for a moment" Oliver suggested, trying hard not to facepalm.

"I don't even know why I bother to show up for the interview. I'm not accepting the job as an executive assistant. I didn't go to MTI to be a secretary"

"Felicity, sit I'm not naming you as a kind of assistant I'm offering you the head of the company's IT Department" Oliver announced with a slight bit of annoyance in his voice.

Felicity now sounding apologetic "Head of the IT department?"

"Yes," Oliver answered back.

"Oh my god, Yes! I accept," She jumped up, clapping her hands.

"Good, you start Monday in the new position," Oliver responded.

Knock knock

Oliver looked up, seeing a professionally dressed red-headed woman hearing through the glass. That must be Adrien Rivers, he thought waving her in.

"Mr. Queen, I'm here for my interview for the Executive Assistant position" she greeted Oliver politely.

"Welcome, Miss Rivers you came highly recommended by my stepfather please take a seat" Oliver gestured to her to take a seat.

Adrien nodded, taking a seat.

"Your work record for Queen consolidated it's quite impressive," Oliver said, looking through her file.

"Thank you, Mr. Queen," she said with a smile.

"What made you transfer from our Seattle offices to Starling City?" He asked, with curiosity, given that Seattle was thriving compared to Starling.

"Well Seattle's nice, I loved living there working for QC's operations there. But it didn't offer an opportunity for advancement" she answered honestly.

Oliver nodded, in the five years he was gone the company's Seattle operations have been reduced greatly, much of it shipped overseas to China. "I understand, Seattle operations have been cut in half these past five years"

Adrien smiled, she had loved her time in Seattle so different from her hometown Metropolis. But it didn't provide an opportunity for advancement, her parents had protested the move to a dangerous city like Starling sitting here right now she knew it was the right decision.

"So What attracted you to Queen Consolidated?" Oliver asked, wanting to know why an East Coast girl chose the West Coast.

"Well, I wanted to be at the forefront of new technologies. And Queen Consolidated provided that" she answered.

Oliver nodded, "Hudson University, Upstate New York your grades were impressive, top your class. I can see why both Wayne Enterprises and Lexcorp pursued you," said turning the page of her file.

"Thank you, Mr. Queen," she smiled.

"Well, your administration history in both Seattle and here in Starling speaks for itself. And giving my stepfather's recommendation I'm going to hire you right on the spot for the executive assistant position"

And this Adrien's eyes widened, "Thank you, Mr. Queen, I won't let you down"

The pair stood shaking hands, "Miss Rivers, you start Monday good luck"

Oliver smiled watching her leave. Despite his reservations about becoming CEO, things are off to a decent start with Felicity heading the IT department, John accepted the role as head of security, and finally, Adrien took the position as Executive Assistant.

But the true test was yet to come, Adrien would eventually have to be brought into the circle. So at the very least, she could provide cover for his work at the Arrow. But that trust would have to be earned.
