While Rita Morin was finally getting settled in with her new "parents" and there was finally a sense of calm at the Saint Louis Community Church, in California a personal crisis was emerging.
Billie had just experienced another night of magnificent lovemaking, and was totally spent, and slept for several hours. In the morning, she finally woke up, her naked body on top of the sheets. Next to her was a man not her husband Jay. Instead, it was Kevin.
Ever since Ruthie had married Hope, Lucy was in denial.
It wasn't that she wasn't happy for her sister. She was. And she liked Hope even more than they had first corresponded years ago. She was especially delighted when she learned her sister and sister-in-law had taken in a girl they hoped would be their daughter some day.
Nor was it she helped marry Lisa and Brigitte. Despite her initial reluctance, it turned out to be one of the happiest days of her life, even if the proceedings had been interrupted by the man who had raped Lucy's niece, Lisa and many others.
Instead, Lucy was in denial that her marriage had been in trouble for nearly two years. It was the night of rough sex that really turned her off. The ninety day cooling off period for sex she demanded from Kevin as punishment ended up going to nine months. The evening supper rituals were formulaic. Six months prior, she - not Kevin - had stopped saying "I love you." But within one week, he had too. This went on, and on. But she thought she and Kevin could work it out. But then things took a turn.
About four months prior to that morning, Kevin asked Billie if they could have a business dinner after one of their patrols. She agreed. Jay was out of town for a couple of months, joining a patrol of the NYPD. It was the first time he had ever worked in a big city and he was delighted to learn how the big boys and girls did their job. In turn, the hosts enjoyed Jay's laid back and common sense but gently tough approach to law enforcement. Meanwhile, Lucy was attending a conference for women pastors in Dallas and her children were being babysat by Annie and Eric.
At Kevin's insistence, they met at a restaurant in another town in case one of their targets was tracking their movements. After a couple of hours, they drove back to her house. She invited him in for a coffee. It was his intention to leave right after. Instead, Billie gave Kevin a long, fierce but sincere kiss. She invited him to her bed. He agreed. Three hours later, he left in a daze. When Annie and Eric asked him why he was so late, he said he needed to take a long walk, then spent too much time in the Promenade - ordering a pizza and a bottomless glass of cola.
Kevin wanted it to be only a one night thing. But several days later, he and Billie had an afternoon fling. It kept progressing until they were making love three times a week. And this last time was the best they ever had, with anyone.
After several minutes, Kevin finally woke up. Like her, he was also in the buff and on top of the sheets.
"Kevin ..." Billie hesitated. "I ... need to tell you something."
"What is it?" asked Kevin.
"I've been feeling really funny the last few days," said his lover. "On a hunch, I went to the hospital. I thought it was a flu passing through my system. It's not. Kevin, I'm pregnant. I'm three months along. And you are the father. There's no doubt."
Kevin was in shock. "Billie ... are you sure it's mine?"
"Yeah, Kev. Jay and I more or less stopped having sex six months ago, with one exception. We did another time, once, when we were in North Dakota, but he used a condom. Having a baby was wonderful, but it took a toll on both of us. You're the only one I've slept with since. We're having a baby."
Kevin leaned over sideways, and kissed Billie. But he had a question.
"What are you going to do?"
"I'm not getting rid of him or her, if that's what you're asking," said Billie angrily.
"I wasn't suggesting -" said Kevin.
"Well, why did you ask what I was going to do? Kevin, unlike you, I'm pro-choice. Strongly pro-choice. And I'm choosing to have this baby!"
"I'm glad you are ... and I'm glad the child you have now will have a sibling. And my kids will have another sibling. I ... wasn't expecting this. I thought you were on the Pill. You and Jay wanted to wait three or four years before having another."
"Ninety-nine point eight percent effective. Meaning a one in five-hundred chance it won't work. Our number came up."
"Are you going to tell him?" Kevin asked after a pause.
"What choice do I have?" Billie started crying. "I don't know how I'm going to tell him ... things have been weird for us lately, but I love Jay so much. This will destroy him! How are you going to tell Lucy?"
"I don't know either. But we'll get through this. Given how rotten things have been with Lucy and me ... maybe it's better to ask for an uncontested divorce, with joint custody. What about you?"
"That might be the only way for Jay and me," Billie said after having finally stopped sobbing.
A phone then rang, with five high pitched pulses, meaning the owner of the phone was being summoned to the police station.
"Your phone or mine?" groaned Kevin.
"Who cares?" said Billie wearily. "It means both of us!"
The lovers took a shower together for nearly ten minutes. Finally, the detectives got into their "undercover" dress - he with a business suit, shirt and tie; she with a jacket, revealing blouse and a skirt. They then slapped their respective badges onto their belts, and put their phones on their holders.
"Let's go, partner!" Billie said.
As they walked out to the door, Kevin had a thought.
"Billie ... before they left on their trips ... do you think Lucy and Jay may have kicked heels behind our backs? And gotten pregnant too?"
"Wouldn't be damn surprised. She's friends with my husband and me. Frankly ... if Lucy had approached me first, I would have done her."
"What?" Kevin was shocked.
"Oh come on, Kev, you know she goes both ways! She slept with Roxanne, remember? I'm surprised she has suppressed the urge for this long! If it wasn't me, it would have been someone else. A few of the deacons are lookers. I would have tried it, just for fun!"
Kevin was silent until they got to her car. Once they got in, he said, "I can't wait for our baby! What do you think it is?"
"Well, I have boy, so I'd like for him to have a sister!"
"I guess we'll find out in a couple of months."
"We'll get to that when we get there. For now, honey ... let's roll!"
Billie slapped a portable blue beacon on her side of the car, backed out the car, and they drove with speed to the station.
