Chapter 42: Infiltration Station
Dawn broke over the Lake of Zombies as the clouds rolled into the sky, overcasting the land. The day of reckoning had finally dawned over the world, and one thing was certain...this day would determine which side would win the horrible war that plagued the world. Only then could the victorious side either would rule in supremacy or rebuild from the ashes.
Misery still slumbered in the house she had "borrowed" from merciless witches who wouldn't mind due to their deaths. The sunlight peaked through the curtains that Misery had closed. Her eyes slowly opened not used to the brightness of the sun.
Misery then got up and walked to the bathroom in the house. It had all the amenities she needed so now she had to prepare herself for the most difficult fight she'd ever faced. She knew she had to sneak into the base where we were being kept. Free us from the cages, and somehow find a way to stop the witches from destroying the world. No pressure at all am I right?
Misery then turned on the shower and let the water run for a bit before undressing and getting in, it's not like she had to pay the water bill or anything. About 10 minutes later after cleansing herself and drying herself off she suited back up in her black spysuit, fingerless gloves and stiletto boots.
Misery then made her way downstairs and knew that since the house was uninhabited now she could take anything she needed. She knew how crucial time was for that day and realized she'd have to make it a light breakfast since she knew she needed something to keep her strength up. Misery made her way down to the kitchen and made herself a kettle of tea (sans frog innards) and ate up an apple, an orange, a muffin, a few strawberries and a croissant she found in a breadbox she had assumed would be empty. Once she had finished eating she scrounged together all the rest of the food she could find (which was all of it) took a deep breath and exited out the front door. The town was quiet, but that was a good thing for her and likely since a large portion of the population was massacred yesterday by her own hands. Misery knew she had to err on the side of caution though and quickly donned her cloak, just so there'd be no more surprises.
Misery paced her way through the cobblestone streets as her boots pounded the streets beneath her. The last thing she needed was to draw any unwanted attention towards her. Luckily she managed to make her way through the streets without being noticed, the town wasn't completely empty though as there still were some witches trying to pick up the pieces from yesterday's gruesome battle, but whenever she saw them she managed to hide out of sight and remain incognito until they left.
After what felt like hours wandering the streets, Misery finally reached the lair that withheld DeDe's dungeon. She managed to remain out of sight as she spotted some guards beneath a barred window high above the ground.
"Hmmm, there's one way in but security seems pretty tight, Sneaking past them isn't going to be a cakewalk. But they wouldn't have guards by a window unless they're trying to protect something about that's where they're keeping Zaí and everyone else but I'll never be able to get past them
Guess I'll have to find another way in." She said to herself before slipping away.
Misery managed to avoid the line of sight as she snuck around the facility. Eventually she gazed up at an open window that was ripe for the taking. "Hmmm it's a stretch but it's the only chance I've got."
Luckily she had some rope to throw up to the window and a metal rod that could be fashioned into a hook, she just had to hope that it caught onto something and that no one was around to notice. No voices could be heard so it was safe to assume the room was empty. She twirled the rope and threw it but she was short by a foot, she tried again but she aimed too far to the left, the to the right, then too short again and on her 8th attempt she threw it in the window and heard something shatter. Misery winced "Oops" She exclaimed, now she had to twist the hook until it was sturdy or else she'd have to throw it again. She twisted the rope until she felt it caught on something heavy. There was no telling how sturdy it was but it was a chance she would have to take she grabbed onto the rope and started climbing her way up to the window when she reached out she peered in and saw that the room was empty luckily the rope had caught onto a table leg and it had supported her weight.
Misery glanced around the room and saw it was a kind of laboratory with several beakers and test tubes full of rainbow coloured potions. "Hmmm.. These look interesting, no doubt that the witches have some plans for these, and probably not good plans."
She then heard footsteps drawing nearer as a sense of dread flew into her system, acting on impulse she dove underneath a table and shrouded herself in the darkness.
The door opened as DeDe entered the lab as her mauve boots clacked upon the floor. Misery saw her wearing a magenta brooch in the shape of a diamond around her neck and she heard her speak to herself "With this one single jewel we shall become the dominant alpha species of this earth." She mused before she spoke to the diamond itself "Your sacrifice will not be in vain noble chimera, your blood will give us immortality and allow us to be eternal forevermore. But until further notice it's probably best to keep you under wraps." with that being said Misery was in shock at the amount of power the witches had as DeDe opened up a cabinet door and put the jewel inside before grabbing a padlock and chaining it shut. "There now no one will be tempted. Stay safe, I'll need you for the execution today. Now to get the stage set up before the armada gets here." and she left the room. Once Misery was certain she was gone she crawled out of her hiding spot. "Okay I need that diamond, it'll weaken their powers and give us a chance to stop them." She concluded before thinking about how she could reach her imprisoned friends before the execution ceremony. "Once I've got the diamond, I need to figure out some way to find the dungeon without being seen. But how?" She pondered.
"Oh well, guess I'll just have to wing it." She said before she pulled out Shreiking Vesper and easily broke the chain of the lock. She saw the gem in all of its brilliance shining in the morning sun, but knew she had no time to lose. Misery took the gem and zipped it inside one of her pockets.
"Now to take my leave" she said as she peered under the door and saw there was no one around to hear her upon which she left the room. "Hiding spots around here are few and far between, what I need is an alternate route, but I need a sign."
As if by some sort of miracle she saw a small spider dangling in front of her as she then gazed up and saw it was dangling from a ventilation duct, it was her Hail Mary, her ticket to save her friends. The coast was clear so Misery proceded to use her scimitar to quietly unscrew the bolts and leap up to the open hole into the duct. Misery knew she should've put the grate back on but her time was thin enough already so she simply hid the grate out of sight and prayed that no one noticed it was missing for just a few precious hours. With that she started crawling through the metal labyrinth before her.
"Now to set Zaí free..."

Once again a load of procrastination took me so long to update. I'll do my best to get another chapter ready as soon as I can. There's less than 10 chapters to go until we get to the end. Stay tuned for the results readers.
