The Egg Of Joy
The very next day after Ash had taken the Indigo League Admissions Exam, the group decided to stop at a small town Pokemon Center in order to take a rest before finding a port to get to Cinnibar Island. As Ash, Misty, and Brock sat at a table, Cobalt and Green watcheed strangely as Brock kept the egg Aiden found close.
Ash: Hey, Brock? When do you think that egg'll hatch?
Brock: Only Arceus knows, good buddy. But I made sure it's nice and healthy and I've even seen Cobalt sleep with it sometimes.
Green: You sleep with that thing?
Cobalt: I saw Azula do it once and it… It just felt right.
Brock: It's actually a good thing Cobalt does it anyway. Since he's mammalian, his fur'll keep the egg warm.
Misty: So, one question remains. What Pokemon will it hatch into?
Brock: To tell you the truth, MIsty, I'm not sure. I've never seen an egg pattern like this before. It could be anything.
Green: Sick! It could hatch into something awesome, like a Dratini! Or a Houndour! Or maybe even another Treecko!
Ash: *nervous* Uh…. Could it possibly be another Aerodactyl?
Brock: I hope not…. I'd like it to be whatever evolves into that Boldore we saw yesterday.
Ash: Hmm, Boldore… *types into Pokedex, shows Brock* I think this mght be what you're looking for.
Pokedex: Roggenrola, the Mantle Pokémon. A Rock type. Roggenrola's body contains an energy core which is hard as steel from being compressed underground. It walks in the direction of sounds it hears with its hexagonal ear, but if the sounds cease, it panics and topples over.
Brock: Cool, it's like an alternate Geodude.
Misty: Oh, imagine if it were a lovely Lapras~.
Ash: I'd be happy with whatever hatches out of the egg, no matter the species as long as they're happy.
However, their conversation about a rare and unknown egg didn;t go unnoticed as three figures in trenchcoats, one shorter than the others, nodded to one another and began to leave as just the group we know and love left the cafe.
Oh….. This can;t end well, huh?...

Later on, Misty read a map as she and the others walked along a cliffside path, where a river ran down from the cliffside nearby. As they walked, Cobalt tapped Ash on the shoulder to get his attention.
Cobalt: Hey, Ash. Can you ask Brock if I could hold the egg for a minute?
Ash: Hey Brock. Cobalt wants to know if it's okay if he could hold the egg.
Brock: *suspicious* Hmm….. Alright, but be CAREFUL. Okay?
Cobalt nodded as Brock passed him the egg as it laid in the incubator, where Cobalt then proceeded to snuggle it close to his body.
Ash: So Misty, how far is it to Cinnabar Island?
Misty: It looks to be really far, but we should be able to reach a pier where we can hitch a hide on a ferry in the next town.
?: *gruff voice* Well, unfortunately for you, you guys won't be making it to Cinnibar.
The group looked ahead as the three figures from earlier stood in front of them, trnechcoats covering them as fedoras covered their faces.
?: *female voice* Now, why don;t you be some good little pushovers and hand over that rare egg you got?
Ash: In your sick dreams!
Misty: Who do you think you are?!
?: You really wanna know?
The three figures nodded once more as they tore off their tren chcoats and fedoras, revealing one of them to be a woman with long blonde hair tied into pigtails and pink triangle earrings, the other tallest being a man with short green hair, and the shortest one being a small, purple gremlin like Pokemon with pointed ears, jagged teeth, and gemstones for eyes. Though confused, the massive red R's on their black uniforms immediately clicked for the group.
Ash: Team Rocket?!
Woman: Prepare for trouble...
Man: ...and make it double!
Both: Here's our mission, so you better listen!
Green: Oh Arceus, they have their own stupid motto?!
Cobalt: Actually, this one seems different.
Woman: To infect the world with devastation!
Mam: To blight the people in every nation!
Woman: To denounce the goodness of truth and love!
Man: To extend our wrath to the stars above!
Woman: Cassidy!
Man: And Butch, of course!
Cassidy: Team Rocket, circling the Earth all day and night!
Butch: Surrender now for you will surely lose the fight!
?: Uh…. That's... Correct?... Look, I didn;t think of my part yet, sue me.
Misty: More Team Rocket members? And what's with the little guy?
Pokedex: Sableye, the Darkness Pokémon. A Dark and Ghost type. Sableye's jeweled eyes shine with an eerie light that can strike fear into the spirits of living beings. It uses its claws to dig up gems for it to eat.
Brock: Kinda weird how it doesn;t talk like Meowth.
Cassidy: OH, you know those idiots?
Ash: Know them? They've been following us for months!
Butch: Well then, might as well finish the job they've put on themselves. And once we do, we'll finally be promoted, unlike those dumbasses! They can;t even get my name right!
Green: To be fair, Butch is one of the most forgetable names. Eh, Sableye? You agree with me, right?
Sableye: Well, I never do, because my friend! *to Butch* I got your back…. Uh… Buddy!
Cassidy: Enough of this Sabeleye, get that egg!
As the Darkness Pokemon crawled forth cackling, Cobalt turned to keep the egg away from them as Ash and Brock stepped up, holding a Pokeball in each hand.
Ash: You're not getting our egg! *throws Pokeball* Azula, I choose you!
Brock: *throws Pokeball* John, let's go!
Both the Drizzile and Mankey were released ready for battle as Butch smirked, taking out a ball of his own.
Butch: 2 on 1? That ain't fair. I'm gonna have to change that. *throws Pokeball* Go, Hitmontop!
The ball opened, revealing a mostly brown and blue spherical Pokemon with a triangular head. The Pokemon spun on its head point before flipping, landing on its feet in a fighting position. Curious, Ash also scanned this Pokemon.
Pokedex: Hitmontop, the Handstand Pokémon. A Fighting type. Hitmontop gets on its head and spins like a top to add momentum to its attacks and make them more powerful. It travels faster spinning than it does walking.
Butch: Now it's a party! Hitmontop, use Rapid Spin!
Cassidy: Sabeleye, use Shadow Claw!
The Hitmontop leapt onto its head and began spinning towards Azula and John as Sabeleye charged forth with elongated black claws.
Ash: Azula, stop Hitmontop with Mus Shot!
Brock: John, use Karate Chop!
Azula's mud slicked up Hitmontop's head, making him slip and fall over, but when John tried Karate Chopping the Sabelye, the attack simply phased through him, making Sabeleye smirk as he then kicked John across the face and sent him back.
John: What?!
Brock: Why didn;t the attack hit?
Ash: The Pokedex, remember? Sabeleye is a Dark AND Ghost type. It's immune to Fighting type moves. We'ree need to try something else.
Brock: *nods* Alright. *to John* John, target the Hiitmontop and use Take Down!
Butch: Hitmontop, Triple Kick!
Both attacks connected as they cunteracted one another, sending both back, but John took the damage due to recoil.
Cassidy: Now Sableye, take down that lizard with Thunder Punch!
Sableye's fist coated itself in electricity as he charged at the Drizzile, Ash becoming nervous de t her type disadvantage, Seeing Azula in danger, Cobalt switly placed the egg down and charged, countering Sableye's Thunder Punch with a Bone Rush of his own. However the impact of the two clashing caused a shock wave to occur, knocking the egg over as it then rolled off the cliffside, much to everyone's horror.
Misty: NO!
Brock: HOLY ARECUES!
Cobalt: *panicked* THE EGG!
Throwing his own safety into the wind, Cobalt ran over to the cliff and jumped, head facing the river as he caught up to the egg. Grasping it in his paws, Cobalt held the egg close as he turned over, allowing his back to hit the water.
Ash: Cobalt, no!
Suddenly, much to Ash's horror, Azula then pulled her goggles over her eyes and jumped after Cobalt as she fell into the river. Breaking the surface of the rapids, the Drizzile looked around worriedly for any sign of her friend.
Azula: Cobalt!... Cobalt, where are you?!
Cobalt's head breached the surface, the Lucario taking a deep breath as he raised the egg above the water, his body having many visible bruises.
Cobalt: Azula!
Swiftly, Azula swam over to Cobalt, who was doing his best to keep the egg close, which made it all the more difficult for him to tread water. Seeming this, Azula quickly swam under him, making Cobalt loop his free arm around him as Cobalt used his other to hold onto the egg.
Cobalt: Guess now would be a bad time to tell you I'm not that good of a swimmer, huh?
Azula: Hold onto me! Use your other arm to keep the egg close!
Nodding, Cobalt kept kicking as Azula guided them along the rapids. However, Cobalt gasped as they were about to go off a waterfall. Knowing Azula couldn't outswim the current, Cobalt swung over, curling up with Azula and the egg on his stomach as his back faced the falls.
Azula: Cobalt?! Cobalt, what are you-
It was too late as Azula's worried questioning were replaced with frightened screams as Cobalt was knocked unconscious just as his back hit the water.

Cobalt had no idea how long he was unconscious for when he awoke, but when he did, Cobalt noticed a significant ringing in his ears and his vision blurring as he laid on his back with his head lulled to the side. Muffled speech caught Cobalt's attention as he turned his head, seeing a worried Azula on his stomach, his hearing and vision clearing up within a few seconds.
Azula: Cobalt?... Cobalt?!
Cobalt: *groans* Az….. Azula?...
Azula: *sighs* Oh thank Arceus… I thought you drowned.
Cobalt: The egg…. Where's-
Azula pointed downwards, Cobalt looked to see the egg still in his paw.
Azula: It's still there. I kept it near your fur to keep it warm, but…..
Cobalt: Hey, don;t worry. You did the best you could…. Where are we?
Azula: Uh… *looks around* I think we're in… lake….
The Lucario looked around, seeing that they were in a small cove, where the river they were just in earlier fell from the waterfall and into the nearby lake.
Cobalt: Great, we're lost, we're cold- AH!
He had tried to get up, only to stumble as a sharp pain coursed through his right leg, which had a huge red scrape on it.
Cobalt: And I don;t think I can walk.
Azula: Yeah, we're really banged up and I don;t see a Hyper Potion or a Pokemon Center anywhere. We'll have to wait somewhere and rest before we head out and find Ash and the others.
Cobalt: ASH! *tries to walk* We have to-! UGH!
He almost falls over, nearly dropping the egg. He would've fallen on top of it if not for Azula catching him mid-fall.
Azula: You literally just proved my point. *points over* Look, there's a cave. We can rest there, right?
Cobalt: I don't sense any human or Pokemon's aura for miles, we should be good.
Nodding, Azula helped Cobalt walk into the cave. It was only a few feet away, but with his injury, Cobalt felt as if it were over 20 miles. As they got deep enough into the cave, Cobalt managed to sit down on the rocky ground, curling up with the egg in his lap in order to keep it warm, though his wet fur probably didn;t help.
Cobalt: You're gonna be just fine, buddy. Trust me, you're gonne make it. *to Azula* Thanks for saving my life earlier, Az. I really owe you one.
Azula: Don't mention it. *jokingly* Just make sure not to do anything stupid like jump off cliffs after eggs.
She chuckled at the joke, only to stop as Cobalt looked down as if he were ashamed.
Azula: Hey, I was just kidding. It was actually… Really noble of you to go after the egg like that. But… Why?
Cobalt: To be honest, I'm not sure. Maybe it's because this egg… Kinda reminds me of, well… Me.
Azula: You?
Cobalt: Yeah, you see. I was actually adopted by Green's parents when they were traveling in Sinnoh. They found as nothing but an egg *holds up wood carving* and my lucky charm. Don;t get me wrong, I love Green being my brother and I love our parents, but… I can;t but wonder; why did my birth parents give me up or what happened to them. When Aiden found this egg, I saw a little of me in it. So… I wanna be there for whatever Pokemon comes out of it, so they could have the same love I did.
Azula: Wow, that's…. That's actually really mature of you, Cobalt.
Cobalt: Thanks. So… Since I answered your private life question, could you answer mine?
Azula: I, uh….. I guess. What?
Cobalt: Why did YOU dive to save me?
Azula: What?
Cobalt: You could've had Ash send out Aiden or Psi or Misty let out Mel, but no…. You dove after me. You saved my life….. Why?
Azula: Look, it's just that… You, Ash, and Green were a few of the first peopleI met that were nice to me. You know how us Pokemon metally age really quick, so by the time I was a month old, the same mons in my litter all started…. Do you really want to hear this?
Cobalt: Yes. Please.
Azula: *sighs* Okay. So.. Despite me really liking this nice Shellos guy that was being shipped with me, I also… Showed lots of affection to another Pokemon. A Buizel. But the man that was going to buy me back on the St. Anne… He saw what I was doing. I tried standing up for myself, but then he…..
Azula held up a finger, taking a breath before simply turning to show Cobalt her upper arm. On it was a small bruise he never noticed before, but what was on it seemed like a PokeBall symbol ndented into it, almost as if the symbol was from a ring. Putting the pieces together, Cobalt growled as Azula turned back to him.
Cobalt: I'm so sorry we couldn;t save you sooner, Azula. To think, such a horrible man would do that just for showing another Pokemon affection!
Azula: Um…. Actually, the Buizel I was showing affection too….. It was… Female….. *ashamed tone* I'm bisexual…..
Cobalt's eyes grew wide at this, everything falling right into place.
Cobalt: So…. Do you-
The fact she turned away even more answered Cobalt's question, which only seemed to anger Cobalt even more.
Cobalt: That's just such a…. Such a disgusting reason for that guy to do that to you!
Azula: You mean…. You're…. Okay with how I am?
Cobalt: Why wouldn't I be? Believe it or not Azula, humans and most Pokemon… They don;t care of the gender of whoever they date. The way you tell is just by observing their love lives. For Pokemon, it's the egg groups they worry about.
She gasped and looked in shock as Cobalt scooched closer to her, egg still in his lap as he placed a hand on Azula's shoulder in a supporting manner
Cobalt: Azula… You're more than what that man thinks of you as nothing but fight bait. You're smart. And crafty… And just so… So beautiful just being who you are. And most of all…. You're braver than most of us just by telling me this.
Azula: Uh….. I… *blushes* Thank you, Cobalt…..
He nods as Azula settles down, her cold-blooded biology catching up to her as she begins to shiver. Cobalt notices this as he holds and arm out to her.
Cobalt: Come here.
The Drizzile obeyed, climbing into Cobalt's embrace as she also tuked the egg close to her, the two just sitting in silence in the embrace. Azula felt some sort of feeling towards the egg. An instinct telling if something were to happen to whatever hatched from it, she must kill everyone in Kanto and then herself. But, things got strange as when she wrapped an arm around Cobalt's back, she heard some sort of thumping coming from behind him.
Azula looked behind Cobalt, only to see that his tail was wagging and hiting the cave wall.
Azula: So…. You mean…. Do you….
Cobalt nodded, only making Azula hug him tighter as he made the Drizzile look him in the eye.
Azula: So…. is this really happening?... I mean, I'm not sure if we're in the same egg group.
Cobalt: Let everyone stare. I want us to be more, Azula…. I love you.
Azula: …*smiles* I love you too.
Cobalt gently gave Azula's cheek a small ick as a sign of affection, causing Azula to blush like mad and snuggle closer to him. The fact he not only accepted her but now… Wanting to be in a relationship together? It just made her feel…. So happy.
But suddenly, there was a rock…. Then a crack. Surprised, Cobalt moved away so they could look at the egg, seeing a crack that only seemed to get bigger.
Cobalt: I…. No way…..
Azula: Oh no, did we break it?!
Cobalt: No, no Az. This is a good thing! The egg's hatching!
She gasped as she backed up a bit to see the hatching egg as it gave one last crack before the top half of the shell gave way, revealing a cream-colored top that opened up into spikes. Two small, stubby arms grew from the sides as a pair of two toed feet came out from the bottom. Interestingly enough, the rest of the egg didn't come off. The small Pokemon opened its small eyes looking up to Cobalt and Azula as they stared in wonder.
Azula: Holy crap…. It's adorable….
The little guy immediately felt safe within Cobalt's embrace, having been exposed to the Aura Pokemon's influence for a while, but as it saw Azula, the little guy cooed and reached out to her, thinking she was its mother. Getting the message, Cobalt passed it to Azula, who took it into her hands and smiled down on it, all the while it just smiled and cooed.
Cobalt: ….I think he has your eyes.
Azula: Cobalt, shut up. He's a different species…. But yeah… I guess he does.
Cobalt: So, what do we do now? He already imprinted on us, so we can;t just dump him.
Azula: Uh, "him"? How do you know it's not a girl?
Cobalt: I can read aura, remember?
Azula: Oh, right… Hey, I know we just decided to start dating and all, but… Since the little guy doesn;t know where his parents are, maybe we should raise him ourselves. After all, he already imprinted on us.
Cobalt: Yeah….. Yeah, we could. At least until he's old enough to choose whether he wants to stay with us or not. Ooh, I wanna be the mom!
Azula: I don't think you can be the mom, Cobalt. You don;t have the slim enough physique.
Cobalt: You're right. If I was a mom...
The camera draws back to reveal Cobalt's furry and slim, yet muscular form.
Cobalt: This would be rather shocking…. Just call me Daddy!
Azula: Speaking of dads, your's is probably somewhere not in this cave. We better get out of here and find the others. Can you walk?
Cobalt: *gets up* Stings a bit, but it no longer feels like a million tiny knives sink into my muscles when I stand on my foot.
Azula: Great, now let's go find our friends.
As Azula passed Cobalt the baby, he grasped onto her hand as he led her out. As they looked around for any sign out of the cove, Cobalt picked up the sound of beating wings. Looking up, he saw a large orange mass flying around in the sky.
Azula: I see a huge airborne orange blob!
Cobalt: That's OUR huge airborne orange blob! *to the sky* AIDEN! AIDEN, WE'RE DOWN HERE!
Cobalt waved his arms to try and get his attention. The blob then stopped before flying off and landing on a ravine. On the cliffside up top, a huge crowd climbed down the cliff, revealing them to be Ash and the others.
Cobalt: Hey! Guys!
Ash: Cobalt! Azula!
The boy ran faster than the others, trapping his two Pokemon and the baby in a huge hug as Green also joined in the embrace while Yami, Psi, and Aiden stood by, smiling.
Misty and Brock came up to them as Brock checked on Cobalt's leg.
Cobalt: What happened while we were gone?
Aiden: After you guys fell into the river, Green got all crazy and sent those Rocket guys flying with Dragon Rush. After that, we spent nearly the holw day looking for you guys.
After diagnosing it as a simple sprain, Brock's eyes widened as he and Misty laid eyes on the newly born Pokemon.
Brock: That pattern… Is that the-?
Cobalt nodded as he and Azula snuggled up to the baby, who cooed at the affection from his parents and made everyone smile at the sight.
Misty: It's so cute!... But what is it?
Finally, with the ehh hatched, Ash scanned the baby with his Pokedex, finally answering the long hanging question.
Pokedex: Togepi, the Spike Ball Pokémon. A Fairy type. Togepi is filled with an energy that makes people happy. When treated well, Togepi shares this energy with others, but when it comes near a human with an impure heart, this energy quickly disappears, leaving Togepi exhausted. This Togepi is level 1, Male, and has the ability, Serene Grace. It knows the moves Fairy Wind, Charm, and Metronome.
Ash: Togepi, huh? Really cool. But the only question now is… Who gets to keep him?
Misty: Brock? You're the one who raised him.
Brock: Sorry, Mist. Breeding is making Pokémon, not caring for them.
Misty: I would, but… I wouldn;t want to break up such an adorable relationship.
Both Green and Ash noticed how loving both Cobalt and Azula were of the baby, the two holding hands as they quietly discussed names. The other 2 humans would assume they were simply talking, but with Ash and the other Pokemon seeing the two holding hands and having that look in their eyes, Ash smiled as he gained a newfound happiness for his starter.
Green: Well, I'll be damned…. Congrats, little brother.
Cobalt: Ash… Would you like to hold him?
Ash: *surprised* Me? But-
Azula: Come on. You know you wanna~.
Taking the offer to heart, Ash nodded as his Drizzile handed Togepi to him. Despite mostly having contact with his parents, the Togepi immediately took to Ash as he snuggled close into his chest, making Misty cover her mouth and gasp at the sight. With both Lucario and Drizzile nodding, they came up with their decision.
Cobalt: Guys, and especially Green, I'd like you all to met the newest member of our family…. Kestrel.
Green: Daw, buddy. He;s adorable.
Ash: Nice name…. But why Kestrel?
Azula: Dunno. It just sounded right.
Misty: Kestrel? Where'd you get that name, Ash? Not that I think it's bad, just curious.
Ash: Cobalt and Azula thought of it. After all… *strangely sly* It makes sense for the parents to name their child.
Misty gasped at what Ash said as she noticedthe two Pokemon seemingly closer than before. Honestly, she would've wanted to keep Togepi, but she couldn;t bring herself to break up such an adorable bond.
Brock: *desperate* HOW DID A POKEMON GET A GIRLFRIEND BEFORE ME?!
Despite this, the group stayed in the cove for the night before heading off the next morning with Azula staying out of the ball, walking beside her new boyfriend… And carrying her newborn son the whole way.
