Chapter 29: A Lesser Man Might Gawk at the Center of Our Universe Being a Real, Living Entity. Not…the Question?...
/
In his dingy Chicago apartment, papers were strewn across the room walls. It was a bridge and trailed into the kitchen, right where a stray window had been so carelessly left ajar.
"Victor –
"Not now, Helena. I think I might have a breakthrough on the abduction cases." Helena Wayne Kyle. She stood in a purple trench with a tall umbrella under her arm at her side. Rolling her dark eyes, her dark ebony hair masked very little about how she felt with her partner from this universe and his…. cases.
Vic Sage; otherwise known by this world's Justice League as The Question, was the world's top conspiracy theorist. He had however found out before anyone that Helena's real time wasn't this one, so Helena Wayne stuck around to one day get home. Even when she was here for a month since the time hole had spat her back out into those dark Chicago streets, she imagined he 6me up with some useful excuse to keep her busy.
In her time, she was kno.6wn as "The Huntress" and was the daughter of the infamous Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle. A cat and a bat, she'd chosen not to disclose too much and didn't let her father and mother snoop around at her file. Not that they'd find one. One month, she'd be back home. One months, no more questions to ask.
Until, she came to realize how insane this man's prerogative was.
His M.O was being right. Always . If she stung his operation, he stung right back. With illogical logic that made her science - loving head spin.
"So, any closer to solving one mystery, detective know it all? Like, the one that will send me back to –
She rushed after a stack of papers as they started to flap up into the ceiling in a….giant spiral. OK. Well, that sold them on poltergeists being real.
"Stay back!" She had Vic behind her in his outfit. His face was hidden in the view of two others. A blonde with a trench and a shaggy look to him, a man with a brown tan jacket and a sharper face who needed to catch more sleep.
"Where's Zee?" John turned to Chas, and that was how they knew something wasn't all fine and dandy anymore than it had been ten seconds earlier…
/
" This is so soon, John. We just got home from Dracula's keep. Are you sure –
"HE was seen in the city in this time. Chicago, was it?" Chas turned to the edition for this week. He pointed to the screen as John checked what the title said. "Fire breathing monster loose. Citizens call a hoax, conspiracy theorists think otherwise?"
"Why is that important. " Zee put her hands to her hips. "It could be some kids playing a prank. Or a me –
"The house sensed magic. I'm just relaying the message back to you, lot." Chas sighed and put the tablet onto an armchair seat by the fireplace. The house of mystery had a beacon, a way to find trouble on earth and off. If it sensed a dragon, then it had to be a dragon. "We just fought dragons and fought with them to stop vampires from creating a takeover of some mystical backdrop. Chas, she's right. Why is this so important? If we go along with this lead at any time, it could create unrest. Recall the boy and his father…?" John hinted what had transpired in Gotham. Damian Wayne was probably getting his first chest hair because of that little expose.
"This won't be as messy. Trust your favorite bloke, Johnny. I'm coming too. There is an old source I got in touch with while you were gone."
"Chas, what is your angle, mate?"
/
"Vic? Friends of yours?..."
John dusted off his coat of the paper cut system and this wa….
"Where did we land, John?"
"Oh, I noticed the file. Hold on a second." Vic Sage moved quickly as John's eyes boggled at the faceless man running for his file cabinet in the next room. "John, Constantine to be exact."
John blinked and that, was when perceptions changed over.

~ Who was this cluttered convict? Bloody hell!...He was worse off in the present to me than I was on the lamb long before my little awakening in magic… If I could gain his approval, bugger. Then, so be it. Better than having Chas please the host. Once again…I just came out of a dragon's den into a new one. What fun! ~
"Hi." I clear my throat and wow. Who is this lily of my valley stating to hurt with her glare? I must ask. Would be rude, ya' think?
"And, who is your companion?"
"Who is yours, Johnny boy." She scrunched her face at me and it's not love. I see the resemblance and pull Chas by the ear. "A word, if we might?"
"Toilet is there." Blue suede here pointed. "Don't take too long. On a deadline." Faceless McGee is ignoring us. I feel restless anyways. Could use a tinkle.
His retort is silenced as I give Chas that same lazy eye. "We cannot stay here long….maybe. That woman has his eyes. Damn … I was right!"
"John, it's no new news. The league –
"Hush it." I quiet us both to listen. "Look. We need to be in and out. That woman to me would bring trouble with a capital B. If you know –
" What has got your attention, mate?" Chas pulls away and seats himself by the John. "If I had a nickel, I'd say you are embarrassed around the Batman's kid."
"Which one? The beauty or the beast." I quip. "She's no sore sort on me, Chas. If that woman gets the idea that I can "warp" travel, she'll demand it. Not like I have to use the data from the house to appear natural." Here, I thought I would be on easy street with a case that involved STAYING on our world. No time hops. The works.
This bites, period.
"So, what is our motto then. Run, hide and deny all charges of forced entry?"
"Don't do that, Chas….really?"
"Calling you a crook might get us to act faster. I'd rather find Zee in the time we can finish up. I brought you here for the house's damned sake. If I didn't, who knows what might have come along. Maybe more –
"Gah, fine! Finish here, don't lie. As, much." I drag my hand to the knob. "Coming, smartie - pants?" I can be plenty immature. I'm not that old. Am I?
I start to wonder. If my hunch is spotty, then that woman out of that doorway will drag me along on her monster hunt in three…
"I know you're an exorcist. And you use magic, from Vic's file?" She holds out her hand. "I'm Helena, this is the Question. We are….kind of close…circumstantial, in a way. You? What are you in for, Constantine?"
Two. I'm waiting, fate! Send it my way, lad!
"Would you….help us with a missing person's case?"
And, there. There it is as I see Chas seething from behind. "We'd love to. Call me John as you like, lov." In this universe, I'm not a snake charmer for nothing. Chas will have to keep by me every step of this adventure.
"Ah, and the part she didn't tell you – the person who took our victim, breathes fire."
Come ON, mate!?
THREE. YOUR TIME IS UP .
