Chapter 4: Demetri's spy

Nobody stopped her, they couldn't even if they'd wanted to. Jasper sensed the sudden spike in Evelyn's emotions, stood up when she did, but not in time to hold her back. Evelyn had no idea whether or not the other's had picked up the stranger's scent, the exact same one that surrounded their house and the woods near it.

The conversation between Arthur and the guy fell quiet the minute Evelyn approached them. Arthur frowned as she halted next to the bar. "Evelyn, are you alright?"

"I want to have a talk with you if that's okay with you?" The question was directed at Arthur though her eyes stayed focused on the dark blond man next to him.

He didn't seem surprised at all by her words, as if he knew this was coming. Arthur on the other hand frowned, but nodded and stepped away.
"We talk alone." He said and Evelyn blinked, "Just you and me."

Definitely not surprised by her request. It worried her as this felt like a clear indication that he hadn't just been passing by their house. Evelyn glanced over her shoulder and motioned for Jasper to stay put. He shook his head, having heard the 'just you and me' part perfectly.

"I don't think my mate is comfortable with me leaving his sight."

"Protective sort, eh?" The stranger huffed.

"If you knew the reason why, you wouldn't say that." Evelyn hissed in return. Was it her imagination or did he try to hide a laugh?

"I'm sorry," he apologized almost instantly, "you probably want to talk about why I was near your house?"

"You were watching me and my sister hunt."

This time he did laugh, "is there a crime against watching two women hunt?"

"No, there isn't it."

"If you want to know the truth, at first I was just passing by. Then I saw you hunting down a bear and it tickled my interest to take a look." He said,
"Seeing your eyes and the eyes of your,- coven, I reckon it's a normal thing for you to hunt animals?"

"Keen observation of you if you were only passing by."

He smirked at me, "Well, observing is something that I do best."

There was no doubt in Evelyn's mind that he hadn't been passing by. As he'd said so himself, at first...There was a lot more going on and she was going to find it out. There was one way to do it. A little eye locking, a little persuasion. That came a lot easier nowadays compared to when she could still taste normal food.

"You've passed by our house a lot more, haven't you?" By the look on his face Evelyn knew what she'd suspected was true.

"Yes, I have." He answered.

Evelyn crossed her arms, "Why?"

"Before I tell you, is it not politer if I were to introduce myself first?" He smiled as he extended his hand towards her.

"Richard O'Donnell. You may call me Rick."

"Evelyn Swan." She firmly grabbed his hand and shook it shortly.

"You're strong."

"And impatient. You were going to tell me why you've been hanging around as much as you have?"

Rick opened his mouth but then his eyes darted towards the door, I followed his line of sight and fell quiet too.

"Well, well…look what has come to honor us with her presence." Arthur suddenly exclaimed loudly.

There, standing right in the entrance to the bar, a small short haired woman with bright amber eyes.

"Alice?"

Alice Cullen. Without warning, no message, no phone call. She had come all the way from Forks, right to this bar in the middle of nowhere. From the look on her face it was obvious how pleased she was with the response to her sudden appearance. The girl did love making an entrance. With a grand smile she walked up to Evelyn and Rick, throwing a quick glance at her other siblings in passing.

She halted right in front of the male vampire, taking her coat off in the process. "I've been waiting for you."

Rick blinked and cocked his head, his eyes tracing her up and down. His mouth turned into a lopsided grin.

"I knew if I waited long enough you would find me." He said in a deep and warm voice and winked.

It was then that Alice finally understood, seeing Rick, what it stirred within her. This was how it had been for Jasper when he met Evy for the first time, though less aggressive and dangerous. Her mate.

Everything and everyone was in place now. Carlisle and Esme, Emmett and Rosalie, Edward and Bella, Jasper and Evelyn, and now she and Rick.

"I'm glad the future cleared up so I could finally see you" Alice replied to him as she gently placed her hand on his arm.

"I'm Alice Cullen."

"Richard O'Donnell." He grabbed her wrist and pulled Alice against him right as he lowered his lips against hers, "call me Rick."

Evelyn's eyes darted between the pair. What on Earth was going on? Well, it was obvious what was going on but that didn't mean she understood it. She'd only just met Rick and here Alice was acting like she'd known him for years.

"Alice, I'm sorry to interrupt you." Evy spoke, "but what's going on here exactly?"

Alice wiggled herself free from Rick and looked at Evelyn. The others had already gathered themselves behind her. Jasper threw his former mate a quizzical look, but he was also aware what was going on exactly. Only why now, why here?

The pixie-haired vampire threw her arms around Jasper's mate and hugged her tight. "Thank you, Evy. This is the best gift you could have given me."

This comment left Evelyn even more confused than she already was, so Alice quickly added. "It's because of you that I finally found my mate."

Her eyes widened and she pushed Alice back, "because of me?"

Alice nodded grabbed hold of her hand. "Let's go to the house and talk about it there,- Because the last thing I want is to start a riot with what I'm about to tell you."

The Cabin

Who could have known, certainly not him. But this wasn't good, not good at all. Coming to the bar had already been a gamble and then she popped up. Out of the blue, without warning. He never saw her coming, he hadn't even had the slightest idea that this was in the cards for him. Now he had to make a choice. Stay with her and risk his neck or go back and staying alive.

Rick looked at Alice, his little fairy. He was overjoyed that she had found him. Over the moon. His mate. But she was part of the Cullen coven. The problem was clear as day, but how was he going to get out of this one? His job to gain Evelyn's trust and get her to meet the Volturi seemed easier than ever because of Alice, but doing Demetri's bidding would also cause a rift between him and his mate. How could he go on?

A small hand squeezed his lower arm and Rick gazed intensely into the eyes of the woman who was suppose to be his for all eternity. Her touch, her voice, as if she'd been made for him. The things he felt deep within were indescribable.

"Care to tell me why you suddenly decided to visit us in Calgary?" Jasper asked Alice.

Alice shrugged. "It's no secret that I was planning on coming sooner or later, it was only until I got a vision of Evy talking to Rick at this specific place, that I knew now was the best time. Before anything bad would happen or before he would up and leave."

Jasper ran a hand through his curls. "I know how your visions work, Alice." He said. "You've known longer."

Alice smiled at Rick for a moment and then looked at Evy who was standing against the wall, the girl's eyes focused only on Rick whilst listening to Alice.

"I'll tell you, Jazz. But you have to promise me you won't freak out." She said.

Jasper arched an eyebrow, "Another thing you already know will happen no doubt."

"Must you be difficult? That's why I want you to promise me."

"Alice, just tell us." Rosalie growled from the other side of the room with great frustration. She also didn't trust the entire situation one bit.

Meanwhile, Rick was getting more nervous with each passing second. Vision? He'd appeared to Alice in a vision? His mate had a gift, the gift of foresight? That's how she knew where to find him. It only just dawned on him that if she could see the future, that probably meant that she knew why he was here? Was that how premonition powers worked?

Oh, he had to get out. Rick cleared his throat. "You know I think it's best if I leave you to this, sweets." He whispered to Alice.

She shook her head, "you're staying right here, Mister O'Donnell. You can't run forever."

He might have muttered something under his breath or jumped out the nearest exit, but Rick stayed put. Somehow his first instinct, which had always been running, had shifted places with something else. Something called, staying near Alice Cullen.

Alice clapped her hands together. "So, as you all know, I've been keeping a close eye on all of you. Well, Evy mostly. The first time I got a glimpse of Rick was a couple of days after you'd all left Forks. I had no clue how he was connected to you,-" She threw a quick glance at Evy. "But it wasn't until your determination of finding out who the scent from around the house belonged to, that I had seen what I needed to see."

Jasper quickly shook his head, "No. You're telling the short version."

"If you would just let me finish, Major Whitlock." Alice rolled her eyes, "I know the reason why Rick has been near the house, it's because,-"

Immediately Rick cut her off by placing his hand over her mouth, "we finally found each other, and now you're already planning on getting me killed?" He whispered through his teeth to her.

Alice pulled his hand down. "They won't kill you, I won't let them."

Somehow that didn't quite made Rick feel any better. Evelyn stepped away from the wall and moved towards them.

"It's alright, Rick. You can tell us the truth...you can will us all we need to know." It sounded demanding, yet soft. Her eyes deadlocked with his.

"I'm after you." He said not even a second after she was done talking.

Alice jumped in front of Rick, just as Evelyn grabbed hold of Jasper who was about to pounce on the other male.

"It's not really his choice! If he doesn't do it, he'll get killed." Alice told them. She threw a pleading look at Rosalie and her mate Emmett who stood only a few feet away, unsure on what to do or what to say.

"If you don't do what exactly?" Evelyn asked directing her question at Rick again, who let out a deep sigh.

"I'm suppose to take you to the Volturi."

"You work for the Volturi?!"

"Well, not necessarily for them..." Rick added.

Jasper hissed angrily and growled a familiar name. "Demetri!"

Evelyn pushed him back. "Calm down, Jazz."

"Did you not hear what he said!?" His lips were curled back, eyes furious and chest puffing. If Rick would get any closer he'd be dead. Alice's mate or not be damned.

"So what, you're Demetri's spy?" Emmett asked moving a bit closer to his brother and Evelyn. Just in case in needed to jump in there.

Rick desperately wanted to shook his head, but couldn't find any way to do it. "I work for him because the payment he'll give me for it is worth my while and if I do this it'll keep the entire Volturi off my back for good. At least that's the promise Demetri made me."

"Your life for my life?" Evelyn said, somehow her words made Rick feel like an absolute piece of shit. But she was right.

"I can't believe this!" Jasper was fuming with rage. "I thought we told him off for good the last time…"

"The Volturi don't know about this," Alice assured him, "Demetri is acting on his own again, just like last time."

"Aro is quite angry with Demetri. He's trying everything he can to get back in his good graces." Rick said.

Boy, he was really outing everything here. Everything he was sure of Demetri wanted to keep on the down low. Was this Alice's influences? Because she was his mate that he wanted everything out in the open. No, that made no sense. His focus shifted to Evelyn for a moment, who seemed to deep in thought. What was she thinking about?

"When it's not Evy, its Bella…or Edward or Alice… it's always someone they want." Rosalie sighed deeply.

"This Bella, is she part of your coven too?" Rick asked Alice.

She nodded," Bella Swan is Evelyn's cousin and our soon to be sister-in-law."

"The Volturi have been mentioning her a lot lately." Again a secret spilled. What the heck was wrong with him?

Again he looked at Evelyn who'd decided to do the same. Only this time she blinked and waved her hand. "I've heard enough. You've told me all I needed to know."

A wave of release fell over Rick and he suddenly felt lighter than before. The witch. She'd tricked him, she'd been using her power in him without realizing it. Oh, she was going to get it now!

Without warning Rick darted away from Alice and reached for Evelyn with teeth bard and hands ready to smash her into the nearest wall. But as quick as he'd been, Jasper had felt the shift in his emotions and was there instead of the female vampire. He struck Rick in the face with brute force. Rick stumbled back, but charged almost immediately again.

Only this time Emmett was there and this colossal of a man was definitely stronger than he was. "Easy now."

"Emmett, let go of him, please." Alice pleaded, "He's only angry because of what Evy did."

"Don't make excuses for me, sweets." Rick said to her gorgeous face, and then his eyes shifted to Evelyn who was walking my way.

It was justified that Demetri told him that she was the way into this coven. She was incredibly powerful compared to most he know. The newest member, the youngest, wanted by a man who had danger written all over him. Going after Evelyn was something he probably wouldn't have said yes to had he known what he would have been up against. Alice would have been the way in, now that he thought about it.

But if he really thought about it, did all of it even matter? He'd found his mate, or she found him was more accurate. The money, his freedom, none of it mattered as long as he could be with Alice. In human terms it would be a crazy thing, but when you were like us…you know exactly who your life mate was once you'd see him or her.

All the anger Rick had felt mere seconds ago seemed to be slipping away. Was Evelyn doing that too? Emmett suddenly let go and Alice appeared at his side, grabbing on to him tightly.

"Thank you Jasper, for calming him down." She said to her brother.

"Don't want nobody to get hurt now." He replied.

"Jasper can control emotions, love." Alice said to Rick.

"Well…isn't this a coven with gifted people…" He growled.

"Rick," Eve said, as she stood right in front of him, "I'm sorry that I used my persuasion on you, but I had to know the truth… I'm sick and tired of Demetri's meddling. He failed, he needs to get over this and face the consequences of his actions."

She looked hurt. They way Evelyn talked to him, it was clear that Demetri hadn't been completely honest with him. Yes, he wanted her for Aro.
He would be happy having someone like Evelyn in his coven, and if she wouldn't listen. There was always Chelsea with her power to change the bond between people. She could make Evelyn believe the Volturi would be the true coven for her.
And once that had happened he could get what he wanted. And what Demetri really wanted more than anything, was Evelyn.

So finally there it is, a mate for Alice.
yes I might have thrown it in just like that. yes, I could have stretched it out more...but it's Alice we're talking about... she sees it and loves to surprise everyone...even the readers of this story :P
