Phoenix Wright:

Turnabout Turncoat

Detention Center 3:30pm

Visitor's Room

Detective Gumshoe walked in, when he saw Phoenix & Maya his face lit up a bit, "Hey pals." He greeted.

"How are you holding up?" Phoenix asked calmly.

"Well, I'm not the most liked person in here, being a Detective and all that." Gumshoe shrugged, it was then when Phoenix noticed some new bruises and cuts, even a black eye forming.

"Dear God-" Phoenix was about to inquire about the injuries when Maya interrupted the conversation.

"Don't worry we'll get you out of here." Maya announced, a look of determination on her face and her fist raised to her chest.

"I know, and I have faith now, being the defendant really put things in perspective for me I guess." Gumshoe said glumly, "How's Maggey?" He asked with sudden worry.

"She's fine." Phoenix answered allowing Gumshoe to breathe a sigh of relief.

"Officer Tyme brought her home." Maya stated.

"He's a nice guy helped me get with her, but I don't know if I trust him with her unsupervised." Gumshoe explained.

"How so?" Phoenix asked.

(Did something go awry in their plan?)

"What happened?" Maya straight up asked catching Phoenix off guard.

"On the day we had planned for them to break up, which was their 3-month anniversary… Officer Tyme said he didn't want to go through with it even though he said he didn't like her.

"Are you sure you didn't cut him off?" Phoenix asked.

Gumshoe started scratching the back of his head trying to remember, "Now that I think about it… I might have." He answered.

(Damnit Gumshoe were you THAT desperate.)

"Hey pals." Gumshoe said as Phoenix buried his head in his hands.

"Yes, Detective Gumshoe?" Maya asked hesitantly partially covering her mouth.

"You're still gonna defend me right pals?" He asked as his eyes started to well up with tears.

Maya and Phoenix looked at each other than at Gumshoe but Maya lingered staring at Phoenix's side profile for a bit.

Phoenix finally spoke after exhaling a sigh, "Gumshoe we're friends" Phoenix announced standing up, "and I don't abandon my friends. I swear… we will get you acquitted of these insane charges.

"Thank you." Gumshoe beamed, "Oh by the way Mister Edgeworth was here earlier with Miss von Karma. I think it might be an even playing field tomorrow pals."

(Not if she whips us)

"Thanks for the heads up, Detective." Phoenix stated, "We need to get to work investigating.

"Okay. Later pals!" He shouted bidding them a farewell.

Police Department

Criminal Affairs 4:30pm

Phoenix and Maya walked in and saw Maggey chatting with some officers and Tyme was amongst them.

Maggey noticed them and waved as they approached, "Hey Mister Wright, hey Maya." She greeted warmly.

"Hey Maggey… do you mind if we talk to Officer Tyme for a second, alone?" Phoenix asked causing Officer Tyme to spit out scolding hot coffee.

"Why me?" He asked worried through frantic coughs.

"We just want to talk." Phoenix answered seriously crossing his arms.

"Is that too much to ask?" Maya asked using the puppy dog eyes that always work on Phoenix.

"Sure." Tyme replied to Phoenix with a shrug before turning his attention to Maya, "Those don't work on me girl." He said cockily with a wink.

(Can he teach me how to resist puppy dog eyes… especially if Maya AND Pearl are doing it to me.)

Phoenix cleared his throat, "So… uh Gumshoe told us you didn't want to go through with the breakup part of your plan."

"Are you talking about the pretty Byrde and Dick plan?" Tyme asked adjusting his wristwatch.

Maya nodded, "Gumshoe said you didn't want to do it even though you didn't like her." She explained.

"Yeah." He replied checking his taser.

"Did Gumshoe by any chance cut you off" Phoenix asked.

"I'm going to stop you right there." He said, Justin took his hat off and brushed some stray strands of hair away before putting his hat back on, "With all due respect Mister Wright, I don't see what this has to do with the Detective's trial, do you think I'm a suspect?" He asked glaring at Phoenix.

"Just answer the question." Phoenix growled.

"Yeah… he did, but that isn't enough motivation for a modus operandi plus the victim is the Chief of Detectives and Gumshoe was at the scene of the crime."

Phoenix put his hand to his chin, "That is true…" he said before smirking and lowering his hand, "but his pistol was fully loaded plus Detective Gumshoe had misplaced it, and he isn't dumb enough to stay at the scene of the crime if he committed it." Phoenix retorted as if he was providing evidence for a contradiction.

"He could've fooled me." Tyme mumbled earning a glare from Phoenix, "What, you even said in the trial today he's not the smartest."

Phoenix shrugged, "Fair enough." He replied, "Can you tell us what you were going to tell Gumshoe?" He asked.

Tyme turned his hat backwards before laughing, "You think I remember, our breakup was over a year and a half ago."

(Wow… Maggey moved on fast. I wonder how long they've been engaged or even dating.)

"I'm sorry for asking that it might have been too much to ask for." Phoenix apologized rubbing the back of his neck.

Tyme shrugged, "It's alright." He said Phoenix and Maya started to walk away, "Hey, hey." Tyme sighed and shouted, "HOLD IT!"

"Gah!" Phoenix and Maya shouted in unison almost jumping out of their skin.

"What?" Phoenix asked breathing heavily.

"Give me your business card I'll text you if I remember." Tyme ordered.

"Uh… okay." Maya replied to him as she took one of Phoenix's business card out of her wallet, "His phone number is on the back." she explained.

"Thank you, little miss." He replied pleasantly with a big smile causing Maya to blush as he took the card from her hand.

Phoenix started to walk away as Maya stood there memorized by the physically fit man when Phoenix realized the burger loving queen wasn't next to him, he looked to his left, then his right, and finally behind him where he saw her staring at Officer Tyme who was walking away from her, "MAYA!" He shouted.

Maya was startled by Nick shouting her name she turned around and shouted back, "WHAT?!"

"C'mon, we have other people to talk to." Phoenix replied.

Maya then realize that they had finished talking to Tyme as he had gone back to the group he was talking with earlier and saw Phoenix continuing to walk over to other potential eyewitnesses, "Wait for me!" She shouted and ran after Phoenix.

"We aren't he to stare at Officers Maya." Nick explained after Maya had caught up.

"I know that." Maya pouted.

"Excuse me Officers!" Phoenix announced in greeting, "Hi I'm Phoenix Wright, Attorney at Law. Do you mind if we ask you about the day of the Chief of Detectives' murder?" Phoenix inquired.

"Uhhh…" the two cops started in unison.

"Listen Mister Wright…" the younger of the two cops s greeted, "The Police aren't supposed to talk to the defense attorney." The officer said sheepishly.

The cop started to walk away before his coworker put a hand on his shoulder, "Now hold on there rookie" the elder officer said sternly, "Do you know who the hell that is?" He asked.

The younger cop looked at his comrade confused, "Should I?" He replied.

"That is the Ace Attorney Phoenix God Damn Wright. He finds contradictions, believes in his clients, and collects evidence and testimony to make sure The Judge hands down the accurate verdict, you might say the" wright" verdict pun most definitely intended…so we're going to help him." The senior officer said.

The younger man sighed, "Fine let me text my girlfriend I'll be late to our date."

(It's after 4 o'clock in the afternoon way too late for a lunch date)

"I'm Lieutenant Jonathan Good" The older officer announced introducing himself, "and this young man is Officer Joseph Batson ." The older man patting his friend on the shoulder.

"Were you on duty the day of the murder?" Phoenix asked taking out a pen and a notepad.

"Um…" Batson said scratching his head, "was I? I don't remember."

(Jeeze, this guy reminds me of Larry)

"I was." Good answered, "I'm willing to recount the events as I saw them."

"Great, thank you so much Lieutenant." Maya happily replied putting her hands against one another.

"Any information would be helpful." Phoenix said calmly.

"Let's see I was just arriving from a crime scene when I heard a bang from outside, I ran as fast as I could but by the time I arrived Officer Tyme already Dick on the ground, and get this… he was resisting a little bit-"

"Hold on." Batson interrupted before clearing his throat, "Pardon my intrusion but he wasn't resisting he was spazzing because Tyme tased him."

"What!?" Maya shouted astonished.

"That's a bit extreme." Phoenix growled astonished and angered.

"Yeah, I think so too." Batson replied.

"Well, he probably got jealous because still hung up on her." Good said taking a sip of coffee and inhaling a doughnut.

"By her you mean Maggey Byrde correct?" Phoenix asked.

The Officers nodded.

"Wait but Tyme dumped her." Maya pointed out, "Why would he be the upset one?" She asked.

"Might be because of how fast she moved on?" Batson replied putting a hand to his chin.

"That's probably it." Good said nodding in agreement with Batson.

"Tyme mentioned that they broke up a year and a half ago, dose that sound about, right?" Phoenix queried.

"Ha!" Officer Batson shouted, "Not exactly… more like a year and a quarter."

"That isn't much of a difference, just three months." Maya pointed out.

"Word around the precinct was she took a break from dating and focused on earning money, it caused her to have a pregnancy scare because she was so stressed." Good said, "Dick is a great man for comforting her, I can't believe he did it." Good stated solemnly shaking his head.

"We don't think he did." Phoenix said, "But we need to get back on topic."

"Right. Hmm" Good started to think, "His gun was smoking and something fell out when it was picked up by forensics as Gumshoe was lead to a patrol car, I asked what was going on but they didn't need to answer I saw the body."

"I'm sorry to say this but the story you just told… contradicts the facts as we know them." Phoenix replied grimy serious.

Maya's eyes widened, with realization "Your right Nick Ema told us the pistol hadn't been moved since the murder happened… well until you picked it up to check the clip."

"I could swear someone picked it up." Good said scratching his head.

"Hmm." Phoenix said getting an idea.

"What?" Maya asked confused.

"Batson what can you recall? Did forensics pick up the so called murder weapon?" Phoenix asked.

"Uh… no but something did fall out of the barrel of the gun."Officer Batson answered.

"Really?" Phoenix asked his eyes widening.

"What was it? Maya asked, "Tell us please." She snapped strain in her voice trying not to beg.

Batson scratched his head trying to remember."Hmm" he said, "I think… oh yeah it was a cigarette still smoking."

Phoenix and Maya gasped.

"That explains the smoking barrel." Maya said to Phoenix.

"Yeah." Phoenix replied to Maya.

"Do you know where that cigarette is now?" Maya asked.

(Ugh, Maya's cluelessness never fails to astonish.)

"Maya, it's been three days since the crime I'm pretty sure that they've taken the trash out since then.

"Oh right, heh heh." Maya said slightly embarrassed.

(There's a pack of cigarettes on the table. I should ask if I can take it as evidence.)

"Officer Batson, do you mind if we take those cigarettes as evidence for tomorrow's trial?" Phoenix asked as he examined the box.

(There's a missing cigarette… could it be?)

"If you can convince me that they relate to the case, sure.

Phoenix smiled, "I think I can." Phoenix announced.

"Huh!" Lieutenant Good spoke for the first time in moments.

"Okay." Batson replied to Phoenix crossing his arms, Let's see the evidence."

"The question isn't where did the cigarette go, its where it came from, more specifically who's desk. Perhaps the victim's." desk Phoenix stated full courtroom mode, "I present the very cigarette box, if you look inside, you'll see there is exactly one cigarette missing could the one missing be the reason that the barrel of the gun was smoking?" Phoenix questioned.

"I'm convinced." Good said, but Officer Batson shook his head.

"It could've been planted there to throw you off the trail." Batson retorted.

(Damnit he's got a point… I don't know if-)

"How about this Maya announced holding a receipt.

(!)

Phoenix took the receipt from Maya's handand quickly read it.

(Jackpot)

"This was just found in the victim's desk, it's a receipt for a pack of cigarettes." Phoenix hands the receipt to the Officer, who started laughing.

"What's so funny?" Phoenix asked as Maya pouted.

"The victim didn't smoke." Batson replied.

"Then why would the receipt be in his desk door? TAKE THAT!" Phoenix asked finger outstretched courtroom mode in full effect.

Batson smirked, "Well played." He complimented Phoenix, "Take it, you might be on to something."

"Thank you." Phoenix replied putting the incomplete packet of cigarettes into his pocket.

Wright & Co. Law Offices 5:55pm

Phoenix was sitting at his very messy desk fingers intertwined mulling over something, "Maya." He said at one point, "Can you channel Mia?" He asked.

"Why?" Maya asked confused.

"I need her advice." Phoenix answered.

Maya hesitated but nodded and started the channeling and the glowing white figure's shape changed from the petite girl into the very mature figure of Mia Fey.

"So, Phoenix." Mia said causing Phoenix to look his mentor's spirit in the eye, "Can you fill me in?" She asked.

"Detective Gumshoe has been framed for murder, by a member of Los Angels's finest but the only proof I have is a cigarette, I can't connect that to any particular officer. What should I do?"

Mia looked disappointed at her former protégé, "Phoenix you've met the true culprit."

"What!? I have!" Phoenix shouted in shock, "Who?" He asked eagerly.

Mia's figure started to glow, "That you will need to figure that out yourself." She said as she changed back into Maya, Phoenix rushed to catch Maya before she hit the ground and barely caught her. Phoenix cradled Maya in his arms and quietly walked over and placed her on the sofa.

(Phew… thank god Pearls wasn't here to see that, we'd never be able to convince her that were not "special someones:"

Phoenix approached one of the windows deep in thought.

(I've already met the culprit… think Phoenix think who… no! It. Can't. Be. But he has a motive admittedly a weak one but that emotion makes us do crazy things. But when I asked him if he remembered I didn't see a psyche-lock but-)

Phoenix's inner monologue was interrupted by a yawning Maya who had regained consciousness, "How was your catnap?" Phoenix asked crossing his arms behind his back but not turning around.

Maya grew wide eyed, "You knew I took a nap!" She shouted shocked, "How?"

Phoenix sighed, "Maya I've known you since you were seventeen pretending to be unconscious after you regain it to sleep is something that you would do." Phoenix explained.

Maya scoffed, 'C'mon Nick when have I ever done that?" Maya asked.

"The Steel Samurai Case."Phoenix answered, "You convinced me to watch every episode of that show under the pretense that there might be a clue… if I had known you better I would've pressed further. Be honest you just wanted to watch Steel Samurai didn't you ?"

"Guilty as charged."Maya answered gleefully.

"Get up We're visiting Gumshoe." Phoenix ordered as he headed for the door.

"Okay." Maya replied slipping on her sandals.

Detention Center 6:50

Visitor's Room

Detective Gumshoe walked in and saw who his visitors were, "Hey pals we can't talk long so what do you need? He asked.

"Tell us about your" Phoenix paused to clear his throat, "apprehension."

"You want to know how I was arrested?" Gumshoe asked confused.

"Yes. "Phoenix answered firmly, "more specifically how Officer Tyme apprehended you."

"But Officer Batson told us he was tased by Officer Tyme." Maya blurted.

"Well, that's true, he also said not to worry Maggey will be safe with me." He sounded kind of threatening when he said it." Detective Gumshoe explained.

"Oh really?" Phoenix replied raising a eyebrow.

"That doesn't sound good." Maya said quietly a hint of fear in her voice.

Phoenix nodded in agreement.

"Do you know Tyme brought her to the Criminal Affairs Department?" Phoenix asked.

"Yeah. She brings the boys doughnuts; she uses it as as an excuse to see me at work and see her friends." Gumshoe replied.

"That's sweet." Maya replied.

"Detective, be honest with us." Phoenix ordered stone faced, "Does Maggey bring them over after 4 in the afternoon?" Nick asked.

Detective Gumshoe shook his head, "No she brings them around lunchtime." He answered.

"Then why did Officer Tyme bring Maggey after 4pm?" Maya asked cluelessly.

"I don't know pal!" Gumshoe shouted angrily slamming his hands down.

"I have a suspect." Phoenix announced.

"Really?" Maya asked cocking her head to the side.

"Who?" Gumshoe snapped slamming his hand on the table, "Who framed me?!" Gumshoe shouted the question, "I DEMAND TO KNOW!" Gumshoe ordered.

Phoenix sighed, "I'm afraid I can't do that."

"Why not?" Gumshoe and Maya asked.

"I have no evidence. If I can't prove it, then it's just baseless conjecture." Phoenix explained.

"Oh." Gumshoe said glumly, "Pals can you do me a favor?" He asked writing something down.

Phoenix and Maya nodded.

"What do you want?" Maya asked.

"Can you check on Maggey for me?" Gumshoe asked, "I'm worried about her." Gumshoe explained sliding the piece of paper to them, "Here's my address she should still be up."

Phoenix took the paper, "Of course we can." He replied with a reassuring smile.

"You can count on us." Maya said with a bright smile, wink, and a thumbs up.

Gumshoe Residence 8:55pm

Phoenix and Maya got out of the taxi and headed towards the medium sized house. As Nick & Maya approached, they noticed a police car in the driveway.

"It looks like she has a guest over."Phoenix noted, and Maya nodded in agreement.

Maya skipped to the door and knocked a total of 3 times before Maggey answered, she was wearing a light blue nightgown and the pins were out of her hair, she looked very tired.

She saw Phoenix and Maya and after yawning as chipper the sleepy woman could she greeted them as she rubbed the discharge out of her eyes, "Hey Mister Wright and Maya, this is a surprise."

"Hey Maggey, I can tell your tired, so I make this quick." Phoenix replied, "Your fiancé wanted us to check and see if you're okay.

Maggey smiled shyly a hint of pink in her cheeks which grew more red at the thought of her beloved Richard for being so worried that he would send 2 of her oldest friends to check on her, "That's sweet of him, I'm fine I was on my way to bed when you knocked." She finally replied.

The world around Phoenix looked like it had the negative filter on it except for Maggey and chains wrapped around her slender figure and a lock over her heart.

(Are you kidding me! Psyche-lock)

"Maggey, it pains me to say this but…" Phoenix outstretched his arm finger pointed at her, "…you are lying to us!" he said authoritatively.

The lock immediately broke as Maggey broke down crying, "He won't leave."

"Who?" Maya asked concerned.

"Who's your unwelcome guest?" Phoenix asked.

"I-I'm scared. I-I've never scene this side of him. H-He wants to…" Maggey trailed off and looked away.

"He wants to what?" Maya asked her worry increased.

Phoenix placed a hand on her closer shoulder, "You don't have to say it if you don't want to. We'll understand." He said comforting, Maggey stated crying into his chest.

"He wants to have his way with me." Maggey mumbled.

Phoenix went from shocked to anger, Who?" Phoenix asked, "Who the Hell wants to take advantage of you? TELL ME!" He ordered.

"I'm scared to what he'll do to me if I do." Maggey said again.

Just then Officer Tyme walked out buttoning up his shirt, he looked up to see Phoenix and Maya, "Hello there." He greeted, "To what does Pretty Byrde owe this visit for?"

"Detective Gumshoe asked us to come." Phoenix growled because the lock had returned to Maggey's heart and Phoenix knew his hunch was correct.

Tyme shrugged his smile was more sinister than charming given what Nick knows, "I guess that makes since, I was just leaving myself." He announced bidding a farewell.

"Thank God." Maggey mumbled under her breath, if Tyme notice he didn't show signs of it.

Phoenix glared at Tyme as he drove away, "Tell Detective Gumshoe tomorrow. He needs to know." Phoenix ordered.

Reluctantly Maggey nodded, "Okay I-I will. Goodnight Mister Wright, goodnight Maya." Maggey said bidding them a farewell for the evening.

"Goodnight Maggey." Phoenix replied.

"Sweet dreams Maggey." Maya said hugging Maggey trying to comfort her.

The Next Day

District Courthouse: 9:15am

Defendant Lobby No. 1

Phoenix and Maya approached the entrance to the courtroom, Detective Gumshoe turned his head hearing them approach, he didn't look happy, but he was relieved it was them.

"I assume that you told him." Nick said to Maggey instead of a greeting.

"Hell yeah she did pal. I can't believe I trusted that bastard." Gumshoe growled.

"Does anyone care to fill us in?" Edgeworth asked with a mysterious black haired young woman.

"Police Officer Justin Tyme tried to have his way with the future Mrs. Gumshoe." Phoenix growled.

"Good lord!" Edgeworth shouted appalled.

Phoenix noticed the young woman finally, "Miles who's this?" He asked curious.

"What?" Edgeworth asked confused.

"He's asking about me." The young woman said.

"Oh of course!" Edgeworth shouted in realization, "Where are my manners? This young lady is Kay Faraday, she's helped me in cases during my early years and today it will be an equal playing field."

"Today is going to be a long one." Phoenix said determined "Even if we don't question the culprit."

"There's always the final day." Edgeworth said attempting to be reassuring.

"Yeah, and we'd be able to gather more evidence. "Maya snapped at Phoenix.

Phoenix nodded in agreement.

"See you in court Wright." Edgeworth said as he and Kay walked away unnoticed to anyone Kay was spinning Maya's green magatama around her index finger.

To be continued…
