Turnabout Turncoat
District Courthouse 10:00am
Courtroom No. 1
The Judge slammed his gavel down., "Court is now in session for the second day of the trial of Detective Richard Gumshoe." The Judge announced.
"The defense is ready Your Honor." Phoenix announced placing one hand on his desk and the other on his hip.
"The Prosecution is ready Your Honor." Edgeworth announced with a bow.
"Prosecutor Edgeworth." The Judge said, "Who is the young woman next to you?" He asked.
Edgeworth was about to answer but Kay interrupted, "My name is Kay Faraday, I am The Yatagarasu." She announced proudly.
"The Yatagawhat!?" The Judge shouted confused.
"Yatagarasu, it means "The Great Thief" Your Honor. But you need not worry she is only here to even the playing field by acting as my legal aid today." He outstretched his arm and pointed at Maya, "Similarly to Miss Fey, every trial that Phoenix Wright works." Edgeworth explained.
"Let's stop dilly dallying and get to the testimonies." Phoenix stated authoritatively slamming both hands on his desk.
"Wow." The Judge stated shocked, "Your really in a rush today Mister Wright. Do you have a date after this?" The Judge asked.
"I concur with Mister Wright we have a lot of witnesses to get through today." Edgeworth announced.
"Very well." The Jude announced and turned to Edgeworth.
"Prosecutor Edgeworth, please summon the first witness." The Judge ordered.
"The Prosecution calls, Police Officer John Blake to the stand. " Edgeworth announced. An early 20s man walked to the podium, "State your name and profession." Edgeworth ordered.
The young man saluted, "Yes sir, my name is Johnathan Blake I'm a proud defender of the law as a part of the Los Angels Police Department." The Officer introduced himself.
"You were on duty the day of the crime correct?" Edgeworth asked.
"Yes sir, but I was mostly on my beat." The young Officer said.
"HOLDIT!" Phoenix shouted.
"Sir?" Officer Blake asked confused.
"How long were you on your beat?" Phoenix asked.
"From 6 o'clock am to 3:30pm sir." Officer Blake answered.
Edgeworth slammed his hand forcefully on his desk, "YOUR HONOR!" Edgeworth shouted before taking a deep breath, "I apologize for calling a witness who is more useless than the defendant, if he wasn't the one on trial." He said through gritted teeth, then it was like a lightbulb light up inside his head, "Your Honor the Prosecution would like to change its first witness!" Edgeworth announced, "The Prosecution would like to change it to"He outstretched his arm and pointed to the defendant's chair, 'the defendant, Detective Richard Gumshoe. " Edgeworth announced.
"Hmm. Mister Wright." The Judge said.
"Yes your Honor?" Phoenix asked.
"Do you have any objections to your client taking the witness stand?" The Judge asked.
Phoenix turned to Gumshoe, "Detective, do you want to take the stand?" He whispered.
"Well… anything I say might incriminate myself pal." He said out loud.
"But we proved yesterday that your gun was stolen." Nick replied.
"I don't want to take the stand. " Gumshoe replied firmly crossing his arms.
Phoenix nodded and turned around, "The defense is exercising the right to not have the defendant testify at this time." Phoenix announced. The people in the gallery murmured in disapproval.
Edgeworth sighed, "Very well, good thing the Prosecution has a back up." Edgeworth announced.
(Of course Edgeworth dose, because he's Edgeworth)
"The Prosecution calls, Lieutenant Jonathan Good to the stand." Edgeworth announced.
Lieutenant Good approached the stand, "Your name and occupation." Edgeworth demanded.
"Lieutenant Johnathan Good, and I work for the Los Angels Police Department sir." Lieutenant Good replied.
"Do you know anything about the case?" Edgeworth queried, "I don't want a repeat of the previous witness." Edgeworth said sternly.
"Sir yes sir, and I am willing to testify." Lieutenant Good announced.
"Lieutenant please testify." The Judge ordered.
"Yes Your Honor sir." Lieutenant Good said saluting.
Witness Testimony: What I Know
"The whole truth is I didn't see the actual shooting, but I did see the aftermath and was able to put 2 & 2 together. When I arrived at the station, it was in a state of pandemonium, after I got in I asked the first person I saw what happened, they didn't need to answer, I saw the Chief of Detectives dead and the smoking gun and I assumed that the gun had been fired at point blank range. After that I heard a zapping sound and a thud, The defendant, Detective Gumshoe was spazzing out on the floor as Officer Tyme has tased him and was arresting him.
"Hmm." The Judge said, "That seems a bit excessive."
The Judge turned to Phoenix Wright, "Mister Wright your cross-examination. "
Phoenix nodded, "Yes your honor."
Cross-Examination: What I Know
Phoenix approached, the witness, "Lieutenant yesterday it was proven that Detective Gumshoe's firearm wasn't the murder weapon, so your recount is already inaccurate. I want you to think back to yesterday and my talk with Officer Batson and yourself." He said.
Flashback
Police Department
Criminal Affairs 5:03pm
"Batson what can you recall? Did forensics pick up the so called murder weapon?" Phoenix asked.
"Uh… no but something did fall out of the barrel of the gun." Officer Batson answered.
"Really?" Phoenix asked his eyes widening.
"What was it? Maya asked, "Tell us please." She snapped strain in her voice trying not to beg.
Batson scratched his head trying to remember."Hmm" he said, "I think… oh yeah it was a cigarette still smoking."
District Courthouse 10:30am
Courtroom No. 1
"A cigarette?" Edgeworth queried before realization set in, "GAH! Y-Y-You d-don't m-m-mean?"
Phoenix nodded, "As a matter of fact I do." Phoenix replied before reaching into his suit jacket pocket and removed the pack of cigarettes, "TAKE THAT!" This pack of cigarettes was found on the victim's desk, even more shocking than that there is only one missing from the container." Phoenix announced.
"HOLD IT!" Edgeworth slammed his fist down, "How do you know he was the one to purchase that item?" Edgeworth queried.
"Hmm." The Judge said, "Well defense? Can you prove that it is the victim that bought the pack?" He asked.
"As a matter of fact I can." Phoenix said smugly with his fist on his hips.
Maya reached into her robe's pouch but couldn't find anything, "I swear I had it yesterday." She mumbled.
"Looking for this?" Kay asked Maya smugly holding up the receipt with a smirk.
Edgeworth buried a hand in his hair, "Goddamnit Kay."
He growled, "Give that to Mister Wright immediately." Edgeworth ordered Kay glaring at her.
Kay sighed, "Fine."
"Along with the Magatama!" Edgeworth shouted.
"What!" Maya shouted, "She stole the one I gave to Nick?"
Kay walked over and handed both back, "Here 'ya go." She said smugly before returning to Edgeworth's side.
After Phoenix's brain finished buffering and was able to register what just happened he said, "Anyway." Phoenix then shouted at the top of his lungs as he flung his arm forward holding the receipt, "TAKE THAT!" He shouted, "This receipt was found by my assistant, Maya Fey in the victim's desk and the only item on the list is… one pack of cigarettes." Phoenix announced.
"That makes sense to me." The Judge announced.
"Your Honor, I'm not finished yet." Phoenix announced.
"What?" The Judge said surprised.
"There's another contradiction, one we actually covered yesterday Your Honor." Phoenix announced.
"You mean, the lack of gunpowder burn?" Edgeworth queried.
"Exactly." Phoenix snapped his fingers and the photograph popped up, "Lieutenant, take a look at this photograph." Phoenix ordered pointing at one of the monitors
"Sir yes sir!" Lieutenant Good shouted.
'Make sure that it is a good look." Edgeworth snapped.
"Well it's the crime scene photo, the murder weapon is on the desk and the victim is sitting there dead."
"OBJECTION!" Phoenix shouted. Pointing his finger at the witness.
"How confident are you in that point blank assumption?" Phoenix asked a smug smirk on his face.
"Uh… pretty confident the gun is definitely point blank range ."Lieutenant Good answered scratching the back of his head.
Phoenix shook his head,That assumption is just wrong." He announced.
"The crime scene photograph contains proof of that." Edgeworth commented.
"How so?" The Judge asked.
"I would also like to know." Lieutenant Good said quietly.
(How is The Judge so forgetful? Actually I'm not surprised.)
Phoenix sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, "Your Honor, literally yesterday the first contradiction I pointed out was that the distance of the shot cannot be said to be point blank concretely." Phoenix explained.
"Huh?" Lieutenant Good said puzzled, "W-What do you mean?"
"Look closely at the victim, more specifically his forehead." Phoenix ordered as he crossed his arms and walked closer to the evidence table.
"Okay." Good said and looked intently until his eyes landed on the bullet hole, "Wait a second."
"Surely you have noticed the contradiction to the shot being point blank. If it was point blank …" Phoenix shot his arm towards the witness stand, "WHERE IS THE GUNPOWDER BURN!?"
"Uh… beats me." Good mumbled scratching his head in confusion.
"No further questions Your Honor." Phoenix announced.
"Alright." The Judge replied
He turned to the Lieutenant, "You May leave the stand." The Judge announced, Lieutenant Good saluted and left the stand.
"We shall take a quick recess and summon the next witness in twenty minutes." The Judge announced before slamming his gavel down.
To be continued…
