It was another ordinary day in the Land of Oz. The sun was shining as a multi-colored rainbow filled the deep blue sky.
It was no ordinary day in this magical land. All of its animals and inhabitants, from the farmers to the to the dragons to the Jackdaws and even the Bun People of Bunbury, were in celebratory fervor, as they had received wonderful news: the Wizard had arrived the previous day.
However, not all of its inhabitants were happy over this news.
The story of what actually happened when the Wizard arrived in Oz was incomplete. To those who witnessed the first attack on the Wizard, it appeared that the Wicked Witch immediately knew that he landed in Oz and sought to kill him.
But this wasn't what happened at all. In fact, Evanora did not even believe in the "prophecy", much less know that a man by the name of Oscar Diggs landed in Oz. Instead, she secretly, and without her sister's knowledge, had assigned several baboons to watch over her sister. If any unfortunate Ozian had run into her, the baboons were instructed to kill anyone who did so and Glinda was to be blamed.
Unfortunately for Evanora, they failed at their task when the pre-wizard outsmarted them. And when those two baboons returned to Evanora and told her what had happened, she started to scry on this upstart from the palace. Who was this person that evaded her ferocious baboons? Still, she believed this rather lucky man to be of little importance or consequence. With the faintest sense of morbid curiosity, she continued to scry on the pair, with only a slight chance that he could be an agent of Glinda.
Evanora was not the only one to secretly spy on them the day the pre-wizard arrived in Oz and met her sister by chance. Shortly after the last baboon began to chase after a white dove, a man dressed all in black emerged from a cave and helped a woman in red onto a stone step. She was looking into his eyes lovingly and entrancingly as they embraced.
Unbeknownst to the pair, someone else was watching from the nearby Winkie Peaks, who was more powerful than all of the witches in Oz combined. She was even more powerful and resourceful than Oscar Diggs himself. It was the same mysterious figure cloaked in yellow that had surreptitiously arrived at Evanora's cabin deep within the Munchkin woods and even told Agatha herself at Glinda's palace about the Wizard's secret mission to the Wicked Witch of the West's castle. She was now using two strange devices, one that not even Oscar Diggs himself would have recognized.
The first device consisted of two small refracting telescopes, which were mounted side by side, and was being used to spy on the pair from afar. The second was a handheld and portable communication device, which emitted a low-level hum of static. This static remained until she pressed a button, which released a small and quick beep.
"The Wizard has arrived…"
An unidentified masculine voice greeted her. "What happened?"
"He survived…this time", she responded.
"If he dies, then the process will have to start all over again. But my time grows increasingly short…I will be once again crossing the Shifting Sands…"
Her hood shook slowly as she continued to stare as the pair slowly and carefully made their way onto solid ground.
"We will get this right, my old friend…"
Static returned once more as her hand released the button, ending the conversation. She then slowly placed the device into her cloak pocket, but not before running her hand along a curious engraved marking.
