I know this update has been a long time coming. I have been exploring other works that have been coming to mind and I have been writing those too. This one is being updated still and I am actually Writing a lot now I am on a roll So keep an eye out. Pre warning conversations are one point I am working on getting better so please give me feedback since this is conversation heavy in parts.
When Rose woke up she had a pounding headache. Looking around the room she could tell it was late and that she was in the Hospital Wing. Seeing Kingsley she tried to get up to hug him but that action caused her head to spin.
Seeing this Kingsley leaned over and hugged her. Albus must have placed a monitor on her because when they broke the hug he was watching and smiling.
"It is good to see you well miss Rose"
"If you don't get Ron I will seriously kick his behind"
"Ron is actually laying in a bed over there Rose" Kingsley told her, smiling a little at the fire in Rose's eyes.
"That isn't helping anything Kingsley." Albus scolded seemingly not caring that Kingsley was an adult.
"Why is Ron in the bed over there?"
"He and his friends did something noble but extremely reckless" Dumbledore replied before Kingsley could speak again.
"Is my brother okay?" Rose asked. She then looked at Kingsley, confusion clear on her face.
"Why did I say that?"
Before anyone could answer Rose rubbed her eyes. She couldn't understand why she was suddenly crying?
"Why did you say that indeed?" Dumbledore asked, looking at Kingsley worried.
"That knock to her head must be making her loopy, maybe she needs more sleep" Kingsley commented his calm voice not betraying him.
Rose could tell something was wrong with this scene and looked at Kingsley he knew that the memories were coming to her and it wouldn't be long until she knew he had hidden the truth.
"Albus perhaps you could leave us be so rose can go back to sleep"
Albus looked at Kingsley clearly trying to understand just what Kingsley was thinking, his face showing his confusion. The oath Kingsley took when he agreed to look after Rose should have prevented him telling her she had a brother but looking at her reaction he was sure she knew something.
"We need to talk" was all Rose said before rolling on to her side facing away from Kingsley. Kingsley cussed lightly and continued his vigil.
When Rose woke again she was alone with Kingsley, he was sitting in a chair next to her bed. Looking around she could no longer see Ron in his bed. She wondered where he was and if he would be punished but now was not the time to think about that.
Kingsley must have felt or heard Rose wake because he was looking at her with an expression of worry on his face.
"Here is not the time nor place Rose the walls have ears"
Hearing this, Rose gave Kingsley a scowl and started grabbing her things to leave the Hospital wing. It was then she remembered Harry was supposed to be here too. Looking around, only one bed had its curtains drawn so that must be his bed. Ignoring protests from Kingsley, Rose stood and started making her way over to Harry.
Harry was not awake when Rose parted his curtains. Thankfully he didn't look too bad, just some minor scrapes to his face. Rose wasn't entirely sure what had happened but it was safe to assume that they had found the stone and the thief.
Sitting next to Harry gave her time to think about what she had said. She had called him brother and she knew at the time she was certain she was right but now she couldn't believe it would the adults really hide something like this from them and if so to what end.
Seeing Harry's cloak on the bedside table folded under fresh linens, probably to hide it from prying eyes, Rose took it and put it on so she could slip past King, she wasn't ready to have the talk yet she needed facts.
Once securely hidden Rose hoped Harry wouldn't mind her taking his cloak, but couldn't help thinking if she was right then it was as good hers as it was his. Not that she would challenge him for it, maybe ask to borrow it from time to time sure.
Rose made it out of the Hospital wing with relative ease and couldn't help but think how many cool pranks she could commit with this cloak. While pranking had not been a top priority this year thanks to the damn rivalry she did enjoy a good prank and would love to do some in school.
Putting this thought aside for now Rose headed for the Library. She soon learnt that being invisible didn't mean soundless and wondered if a spell would fix this too. Upon nearing the Library Rose took off the cloak she would need to be visible to talk to Madam Pince the strict librarian.
"Madam Pince, I was wondering if there are any public records of children born to noble houses that I could look at."
"Miss Shacklebolt, I heard you were in the Hospital Wing. I hope you have recovered well. Unfortunately those records are kept by the goblins and they will only give you information on the house that you belong to."
Rose swore under her breath but still loud enough for Madam Pince to hear, she didn't look impressed. That's when Rose thought of a different angle.
"Are there any public school records of students that attended hogwarts?"
If Madam Pince had not been so busy she may have questioned why Rose was asking her this but managing the school library on her own kept her very busy.
"School records are kept in the archive room; it is found on the second floor east wing."
Moving into one of the isles closest to her Rose made sure she was alone before once again donning the cloak, not wanting to be disturbed and distracted from her current train of thought. Getting to the second floor was easy but even after heading to the east wing finding the archive room was difficult for some bizarre reason there was no room signposted as an archive.
After trying many of the rooms Rose finally found the right room. By this time Kingley had noticed Rose was missing and was trying to find her, having no luck. Counting back Rose could make a guess when the Potters left school and started trying to find any and all articles pertaining to them.
After a good hour and a half maybe more Rose had many pictures and articles. Rose was very happy to know that the school used to have an active school newspaper and It seemed that the prankster James Potter was often on the cover for his quidditch exploits. While Lilly was not featured as often she was shown to have won many potions club trophies and was seen in a few articles holding one proudly. She was also proudly showing a head girl badge in a later issue.
Rose spent some time examining the pictures, she could easily see Harry in both his parents but it took a little longer for her to see her own resemblance too. It too was clearly there, Lily's facial structure was almost identical to hers, black hair came from James and apparently her nose too looking in the pictures she could see this.
Rose took the articles and put back on the cloak heading to the Slytherin common room to hide the evidence she had found wanting to show Harry when he woke up. Once her evidence was secure Rose returned to the Hospital wing. The only adult to be seen was Madam Pomfrey sitting in her office.
Rose returned Harry's cloak and feeling tired and needing to recover from her own injuries returned to her own bed.
Sometime later it was very frustrated Kingsley who re-entered the Hospital Wing, He was being followed by Dumbledore. Whatever they had been discussing soon came to a halt when Kingsley saw Rose laying once again in her bed. Being quite angry she had managed to slip past him he was very tempted to wake her and scold her but he knew that he would have to show restraint, She was going to be mad enough as it was. Seeing that his services were no longer required Dumbledore left silently.
Sometime later into the early hours of the morning Rose was woken up by the sound of Harry moving in his sleep and groaning in discomfort. She wanted desperately to go to him but before she could get out of bed Kingsley stopped her.
The hospital wing was dark due to it being so late but even in the darkness Rose could see the parchment in Kingsleys hand. It read "Do you know?" Rose wanted to deny it not wanting to talk to anyone other than Harry about this. Growing up with Kingley she knew he wouldn;t let her go to Harry without answering, and remembering the walls have ears, she nodded her head.
Kingsley could see the hurt in his wards eyes as she processed the fact he knew and hid the truth from her for almost 12 years. Having answered his question Rose attempted to get out of bed again, this time she wasn't stopped.
Rose sat on Harry's bed stroking his hair hoping it would calm him. In reality she had no idea how to calm someone down when they were clearly distressed but it seemed to be doing it's job even if Harry showed no signs of waking up.
When Rose woke the next morning she was back in her own bed, Kingsley was asleep in a chair next to the bed and Harry was still unconscious. Looking around the room she noticed that Ron was awake and talking to his mother. Seeing Ron made Rose fill with anger, it was his fault she was laying in a hospital bed when her brother had gotten hurt risking his life.
Before Rose could spend too much time thinking about this Madam Pomfrey arrived at her bedside with a house elf in tow. The elf bowed slightly before placing a bowl of hot porridge on the table by Rose's bedside. Without a word the elf disappeared, having grown up around magic Rose knew most elf's were efficient and didn't stick around to be thanked, Not that many wizards thought about thanking their elfs.
"Please eat Miss Rose and then I would like to examine your head once more"
The Matron was speaking quietly so as to not wake Kingsley but the way she had asked made Rose feel like she was being told to eat rather than it being a request. Thankfully Rose was pretty hungry and started eating.
As she ate she could feel eyes on her. Looking around as she ate she saw that it was Ron who kept looking. Rose refused to look up and acknowledge Ron however and continued to eat hoping that she would be cleared for discharge. Mrs Weasly must have seen her son's gaze because Rose could soon hear Mrs Weasly demanding he apologise to Rose for his part in her injuries, not that she wanted one from him.
Once her check up was complete Rose was discharged from the hospital. She was tempted to leave Kingsley asleep and just walk off but she knew this would lead to her getting in trouble, besides she knew that she needed to speak to her "uncle?" Was he even related to the potters?
Once she had woken up Kingsley Rose changed and followed Kingleys lead. He seemed to be leading to Dumbledore's office which surprised and confused her. When they arrived at the statue Rose was shocked to see that without a word the statue moved aside.
Dumbledore was sitting behind his desk and for the first time that Rose had seen he had a pensive look on his face. Before Dumbledore could say a word Kingsley started speaking, his once calm and reassuring voice was broken and desperate.
"Dumbledore. I ask that you release me of my oath. I have done as you asked for ten years, but I cannot no longer. She needs to know and deserves to hear it from me. I will tell her at the cost of my magic if I have to but I ask you won't make me"
If Dumbledore was surprised by what had been requested he showed no signs of it. He looked between Kingsley and Rose. He was not an unintelligent man; he knew Rose had been to the library and the archive room. He stood up taking out his wand as he did so. Pointing it at Kingley he cast a spell that hit Kingsley in the chest. Once the spell took effect he sat back down and indicated that Rose and Kingley follow his example.
"I request you tell her here I may have answers you cannot provide."
Once sat down Rose looked upon Kingsley expectantly. She knew not what to expect from the conversation and nervously started to fidget in her seat. It felt like a long time before Kinglsey spoke but whether it was or not Rose couldn't say.
"Rose. I once told you your parents died not long after you were born, you couldn't have been more than one at the time. When Hagrid arrived in Godric's Hollow that night It was to pick up Harry so he could live with his aunt and uncle. Living with his aunt and uncle would provide Harry a safe place to live and grow up. It wasn't Albus' first choice but he really had no options Harry had to stay there. He however decided that you didn't have to live that way. If he could somehow hide you away you could grow up normal and happy."
At this point Rose was looking pretty upset and fairly angry at Dumbledore. She chose however not to interrupt; she could see Kingsley needed to get this off his chest and she would have time to respond after.
"Harry having defeated the darkest wizard of the time would be famous and you have seen that indeed he is. He couldn't just disappear there would be an outrage, Dumbledore believed that you would benefit more from growing up in the magical world with a new name and someone who could raise you in our world. My family was obscure enough that no one would question a long lost niece needing refuge from the war. This is why Albus asked me to raise you. I must admit I did not expect to love you so deeply but watching you grow and mature into a talented witch I couldn't help but want you to have that normal life."
By this point Rose was finding it pretty hard to stay calm, her magic was responding to her anger and started to show in the room.
"You took me away from my brother, left him to deal with those awful muggles. Ten years of my life I didn't know I wasn't the only one left in my family. You made me feel like I had no one left in the world. Sure I had uncle King.. Kingsley but I always felt something was missing. I always assumed it was mom and dad but it wasn't it was Harry. Tell me I am wrong!?"
"You need to try to calm down Miss Rose" Dumbledore stated seeing the magic manifesting in the room.
"I wanted to tell you many times as you grew up and asked about your family but Albus felt that if you knew it would break your heart knowing you couldn't be together since he could not live with us and he did not want you to have to grow up there" Kingsley tried to explain hoping his ward would understand the reasoning and calm down some.
"How could you agree to keep this secret from me? You treated me like a daughter and yet you kept a part of me hidden away." Rose suddenly turned to Albus and he could feel the rage pouring off her, could feel it aimed at him like a cannon ready to fire.
"What gave you the right to split me and my brother up? You can't play with people's lives like this who gave you the right to decide where and how I live. As I grew older and had more questions, what gave you the right to think you could deny me the answers. If I hadn't found out how long did you plan on keeping me in the dark?"
Before anyone could say anything further Rose's control finally slipped. Her anger and hurt manifested into magic was too much for her to handle. As the control slipped the window panes in the room shattered and objects that were not secured were pushed away from Rose the room cackled like uncontrolled electricity. Not waiting to see what happened next or how the adults would respond, Rose fled the room, she was the only one to not see small electricity trails following her for a short time.
Hoping to fix the mess that they were in Kingsley tried to follow but somehow Rose's magic had sealed the door. Kingsley being an auror managed to undo the magic but by the time he was down the stairs he had not seen which way Rose had fled.
Rose ran as fast as she could toward the dungeons, she hoped that if Kinsley followed he would not be able to enter the room. When Rose made it to the Slytherin common room she wasted no time finding her bed, she felt tired and betrayed. Her bones seemed to ache as the magic she had let forth took effect on her body, then everything went black and she was asleep.
I really like this chapter so I hope you do too. If you don't let me know why, I'm always looking to improve.
