A New Dawn
The first sensation Jamie registered as she slowly drifted back into consciousness was the comforting warmth beneath her cheek. It was solid, but not unyielding, radiating a calm that matched the slow, steady rhythm she could feel pulsing through it. The second thing she noticed was a delicate scent—a mix of something almost like sandalwood, with a hint of a crisp, unidentifiable Vulcan note. Her senses were hazy as if she were trying to surface from the depths of a pleasant, albeit disorienting, dream.
Jamie stirred, shifting slightly as awareness gradually returned to her. The warmth beneath her cheek moved, just barely, in response. She blinked her eyes open, registering the muted lighting of her quarters, and it all came rushing back—everything that had led her here, the culmination of emotions and understanding, the deep, spiritual bond they had forged.
And Spock. Her hand was splayed across his chest, and she was nestled into his side, one of his arms securely wrapped around her. The slow, steady rhythm she had felt was his heartbeat, strong and soothing beneath her palm.
"Jamie," Spock's voice was a soft, deep rumble that she could feel more than hear. It reverberated through her where she lay pressed against him. "How are you feeling?"
She tilted her head slightly to look up at him, her eyes meeting his dark, intense gaze. The concern was there, but tempered with something else, something she had rarely seen in him—a quiet relief, perhaps even contentment.
Jamie gave him a faint, reassuring smile, though it was still tinged with the lingering fog of sleep. "I feel… different." She frowned slightly, trying to put the sensation into words. "Not in a bad way, just… different."
Spock's brow furrowed slightly in response, though he remained calm. "You experienced a significant shift in your neurological and emotional centers during our bonding process. The difference you feel is likely due to the connection we now share, both mentally and emotionally."
She nodded, recalling the deep mental merging they had shared - as they made love - the way their thoughts and emotions had intertwined so effortlessly, so completely. It was something she could never have fully understood until she had experienced it herself.
Her gaze drifted past him to the nearby table where a familiar medical scanner lay. Her eyes widened, and she pushed herself up slightly, the sleepiness fading as mild panic set in. "Please tell me you didn't send for Bones!"
Spock's lips twitched in what she might have dared to call the beginnings of a smile, but his expression remained composed. "I did not. I utilized the scanner myself after you lost consciousness. Unable to sense your mind, though you were in no immediate danger, I deemed it prudent to ensure your vitals were stable before moving you."
Jamie let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding, and relaxed back against him, the tension easing from her shoulders. "Thank goodness. That would have been embarrassing."
Silence settled between them, comfortable and familiar, the bond they now shared thrumming gently in the background of her thoughts. She could feel Spock's presence there, like a constant, steady beacon, reassuring and calming. It was unlike anything she had ever experienced, and it was somehow both exhilarating and grounding at the same time.
But then a new thought struck her, bringing with it a sense of impending responsibility. "We're going to have to inform Starfleet about this, aren't we? They'll need to know about the change in our relationship circumstances and my god I need to tell Sam."
Spock nodded, his expression serious as he looked down at her. "Correct. However, I have already taken the liberty of filing the necessary documentation with Starfleet Command. Our change in relationship status has been officially documented and will be reflected in our personnel files. As for your brother, I believe it would be best if you informed him personally. I have already informed my parents of our bond. They were... pleased, and wish to meet with you at your earliest convenience."
She blinked at him, surprised. "You… already did? Exactly how long have I been out?"
"You have been unconscious for approximately eight hours," Spock replied, his tone matter-of-fact. "We are currently late for Alpha shift by one hour," Spock replied, as though it were the most ordinary thing in the world.
"One hour!" Jamie sat up abruptly, the sheet slipping down to her waist as she moved. Her heart raced at the thought of being late, of having missed her duties, but the weight of Spock's hand on her arm gently brought her back to the present moment.
"There is no need for concern. The conn -"
"Spock, what did you do? Who is currently in charge of my ship?"
"Mr Sulu."
Jamie exhaled slowly, some of the tension leaving her shoulders. Of course, Spock would have taken care of everything. He was nothing if not thorough, always three steps ahead. Having Starfleet know that they bonded was one thing it was another having her crew know.
"There is no need to feel embarrassed Jamie. What happened between us -"
Jamie had forgotten that he could sense her emotions now. "Spock shut up." Then it dawned on her. "You said you informed your parents?" Jamie felt a mixture of relief and nerves at the thought of meeting Spock's parents. "They want to meet me?"
"Indeed."
"Great, just fantastic -" Jamie mumbled sarcastically, "probably should have met them whilst we were on Vulcan. Before bonding."
"My mother suggested the same thing."
Jamie wished for a black hole to swallow her up.
"I'd rather it didn't."
"You can hear my thoughts too?"
Spock does not respond to her. Which tells her all she needs to know.
"Congratulations, Captain, Commander. I'm so happy for both of you. I hope this bond brings you both great joy."
"You just had to file the change of relationship status with Starfleet!" Jamie muttered under her breath, feeling herself blush. "Thank you, Uhura."
"Your well-wishes are appreciated, Lieutenant."
They proceed a bit further, running into Doctor McCoy who looks at them with a smirk and a raised brow. Before he even utters a word Jamie holds a hand up.
"Nope, do not go there. Not one word."
McCoy laughs and pulls her in for a hug. "Congratulations you deserve it." over her shoulder Bones utters to Spock, "Take good care of her, alright?"
"That is my intention, Doctor."
As they reach the entrance to the mess hall, the doors slide open, and the room inside is filled with a mix of officers and crew. They all turn to look at the newly bonded couple, and a round of applause breaks out. Spock and Jamie exchange a brief, meaningful glance before stepping into the room, welcomed by their friends and colleagues.
"To the newly bonded couple!" Sulu shouts out. "Congratulations Captain, Commander."
Cheers erupt as the couple is ushered in, and the scene fades into the warm camaraderie of the Enterprise crew sharing a meal in celebration.
Later that evening, Jamie sits at her desk, the room quiet save for the occasional hum of the ship. She activates the communications console, inputting the coordinates to contact her brother Sam, and his wife, Aurelan. The screen flickers for a moment before their familiar faces appear.
"Jamie! It's great to see you. How's my favourite sister doing out there?"
"I'm your only sister."
"That's why I get to call you my favourite."
"You look radiant, Jamie, it's not often we get to hear from you like this. I take it you have bad news for us," Aurelan said.
"What other news could it be - when is the trial? - do you need us -"
"I love how your first thoughts are that I've been court-martialed - ye of little faith." Jamie said crossing her arms.
"Well you're not injured - and you're calling us so you've not -"
"This is about that him, the Vulcan you wouldn't talk about when you were with us last."
"Spock?" Sam confirms then adds in a concerned tone. "Jamie?"
"Well, I've got some news. Something pretty big happened. Spock and I—well, we went through a Vulcan bonding ceremony."
"A Vulcan bonding..." Sam states, "the bonding process of marriage?"
"That be the one!" Jamie confirmed wincing waiting and right on cue Sam went into a swearing rant.
"Ignore him, he's happy for you - underneath all his protectiveness -," Aurelan said, "we both are."
"I wanted you both to know. To hear it from me. Thanks for being so supportive Aurelan."
"On that front, you should know whilst we have you - I'm expecting again."
"That's wonderful news. Another baby Kirk on the way. How far along?"
"I'm roughly eleven weeks so it's on the down-low."
"Can't wait to meet them. Love you."
"We love you too," Sam responded now having calmed down. "Look after yourself."
