Chapter 4 - Tribute Reveals

A Toast To Our Tributes

Aegis Harrow

26

~ Capitol / Head Gamemaker ~

The scene Aegis saw before him was a stark contrast to what he had seen almost eleven months ago, that fateful day he had been holed up in a meeting room with the rest of his colleagues. That day had been a tense one, filled with angst and suspense that had rendered the majority of the team fractured. To most, they had all been enemies that day, pitting against one another in hopes that it would be themselves, that would be granted with an opportunity they could have only dreamt of prior.

Today, was instead a day of celebration, the qualms of that day a distant memory as they all came together in ecstatic anticipation. Spirits ran high, with chatter and laughter ensuing as the Gamemaker team could finally breathe a sigh of relief. To most of them, it was a brief reprieve; their job was far from finished, and the upcoming few weeks would be arguably the most important part of their work. But for the current day, it was time to relax, and take a break before their real work that would start within the following twenty-four hours.

It was Reaping Day. Everything they had worked towards for the past several months, had finally culminated to this point of time, the day in which the participants of their arena would ultimately be selected. Of course, they were all no stranger to this course of events, they had all experienced it numerous times over the years and this was often a day the majority of them looked forward to, where they could sit back and do nothing whilst the Capitol handled the selection and transportation process of the tributes.

Aegis had no doubt that several of the Gamemakers would be rolling into the observation deck of the training room rather hungover the following day, it was an annual occurrence at this point. But who was he to stifle their fun? They had earned it, and after all - he didn't really need them from then on out. At this point, the hard work and backbreaking hours that they assisted with had been done. The arena was finalised, tests were running smoothly; they had never been more prepared. While conditions under Esteban Perryfeather had been frantic and chaotic, Aegis had managed to take them all under his wing, maximising their efficiency and properly assigning them based on their specialities. He had garnered their respect, and for once it seemed as if the Gamemakers were drinking due to excitement for the games, rather than celebrating the mediocre result they had scraped together.

Their purpose had been fulfilled as far as Aegis was concerned, he could do all the analysing of the tributes on his own. After all… it was his word that would be final in relation to any of the unlucky participants. The opinions and observations of the other Gamemakers simply didn't matter to him, he trusted no one's judgement better than his own - although he was certain a specific 'someone' would be sure to challenge him.

Aegis's eyes landed on Gaia from across the room, who had engaged in a bickering conversation with Flax Brashford once again. It was common place at this point, the two had always butted heads, and whenever Gaia wasn't hovering around Aegis like the annoying fly she had become, she was instead instigating a fight with Flax. These clashes always varied in intensity, most often they were genuine arguments between two headstrong individuals. Today however, the ease of flowing alcohol and the relaxed atmosphere, their interaction appeared to have resulted in a rather tame quarrel, with what Aegis could tell from over the distance and loud noise of raucous Gamemakers - was gambling talk in relation to the Reapings.

This was a yearly rivalry between those two, as their competitive spirits aligned only once in a blue moon, always resulting in this tradition. Gamemakers weren't legally allowed to gamble on the games, as they of course could control the outcome in any way they pleased. This usually extended to the private session scores as well, leaving very little betting for the Gamemakers to be allowed to partake in. Fortunately for Gaia and Flax, the one thing that they as Gamemakers had no control over was the Reapings, which allowed them to bet as they pleased on various facets of the selection process. Essentially, it was a legal loophole.

These facets spanned over various factors of the Reapings, such as colours that specific Escorts would end up wearing, or in relation to the ages of the tributes that would be Reaped. Some riskier bets were in relation to volunteers, as they were always few and far between Districts that weren't Career Districts.

The Career Districts had whole betting scenarios built around themselves, as of course they were always expected to produce volunteers that were usually predetermined. These predetermined tributes were never known to the Capitol public, as they were technically not allowed despite the blind eye that the Capitol turned to the Career Academies. The Districts of One, Two and Four always kept their chosen volunteers very under wraps, with only "candidate options" revealed to the Capitol for them to promote in order to assist with their betting prospects. It was a sophisticated system based on broken rules, but it benefitted the Capitol far too much for them to put a stop to the Career system.

Aegis never particularly had a taste for gambling; he always preferred to rest his chances on situations that he had a way to determine what the outcome would be. Relying on educated guesses was something he was quite used to, however he simply didn't receive the same thrill that others got from putting their money on the line.

To Gaia and Flax however, it was likely more of a contest based on their own pride. Aegis was content with Gaia's distraction, he had already seen more than enough of her over the duration for the development of the 149th Hunger Games. Instead, he was more than glad to be sitting off to the side, enjoying a drink that was just enough to settle his convoluted mind for an hour or two.

"Aegis! Why are you sitting on your own? Come drink with us!" One of his fellow Gamemakers exclaimed from not too far away; a gruff man that was sitting with a group of other Gamemakers whom all turned their heads and joined in on the coercion. Aegis never could have imagined a scenario like this a mere year ago, people actively wanting to spend time with him and partake in conversations with him. Most would have been unaware of his presence at all if he were to be doing the same thing as he was doing now, yet suddenly he had become the one they all looked up to, the one each of them would be doing their best to impress. It truly was a surreal sensation, one Aegis simply couldn't acclimate to despite his best efforts.

"Thank you Carrion, I might join you in a moment," Aegis responded, delaying the inevitable as the Gamemakers would eventually integrate him into their celebrations regardless.

"Oh? He must be chatting to someone important," Carrion smirked to the others, his eyes fixated on the phone that rested next to Aegis's drink.

"Oooo, you think it's a girl?" Another woman whispered not-so-subtly, causing a few of the others to giggle in response.

"Gaia will get jealous," another one of the table occupants cackled, causing the rest of them to burst into hysteric laughter. Aegis turned his attention to his phone, brushing off the comments and pretending not to have heard them. Truthfully, the phone hadn't even been turned on, although he assumed they couldn't tell whilst in their inebriated state. As for the Gaia comment, it was just another among the masses of other similar comments the Gamemakers had been whispering to each other the last few months.

With the way Gaia had composed herself and spent countless hours with him over the past few months, he understood where the rumours had begun to spawn from. Of course, several of his colleagues had prodded the subject with him before, trying to delve into whether there was any truth to the matter. Naturally, Aegis hadn't entertained them with any confirmation nor denials; he had no care for such pointless gossip. Somehow, it seemed as if Gaia was still blissfully unaware of such rumours, as he imagined she'd create quite the storm if she knew these ideas were spreading. It was better for Aegis to not get involved, doing so would imply that such a subject could impact him, not to mention - both denial or confirmation would only fuel their antics.

"I-is it true?" A timid voice arose from the stool behind Aegis. It was a familiar voice, one that sounded soft and serene, as sweet as honey some of the Gamemakers would say. Of course, Aegis had heard it before many times, allowing him to easily recognise who it was. He didn't even have to turn to see that it was Eirene Harmonia, the Gamemakers fabled golden girl. Turning towards Eirene, he made eye contact with her glazed over, chocolate brown eyes. Her long curly golden locks swayed with every movement of her petite frame, her head tilting back and forth slowly to suggest a moderate level of intoxication. If that didn't give it away, the few empty glasses nearby were certainly enough to suggest she had already consumed a few drinks. Her eyes locked onto Aegis's own, her long doe-like lashes fluttering with every blink. "Is it true that there's something going on between you and Gaia?"

Even for Aegis, the question was rather unexpected, particularly from Eirene of all people. The tone she asked with dripped with apprehension, making her appear uncharacteristically dejected. He wasn't overly sure as to why she was asking him specifically, Eirene was Gaia's closest friend here after all, it would have made a lot more sense for Eirene to speak about this with her. Setting that aside, he wondered why she was curious in the first place?

"Why do you ask?" Aegis questioned softly, his expression unreadable as Eirene appeared to search his face for answers. Eirene's eyes widened for a moment, appearing to realise how forthcoming this had made her appear. She faced away from Aegis temporarily, trying to brush off her apparent concern for the subject.

"Oh, it's no reason," she stumbled over her words, her eyes trained on the bar countertop. "It's just that I overheard what they were saying over there… it came as a surprise is all."

"I see," Aegis responded, sensing there was more to it than Eirene led on. "Word of that has been going around for some time now, I just figured you'd have spoken to Gaia about it seeing as the two of you are fairly close."

"T-talk to Gaia about it?" Eirene laughed, appearing dumbfounded by the idea. "I know you're smarter than that Aegis, she'd go ballistic if I were to ask her that, and there ended up not being any truth to it."

"I suppose you're right, bringing such a topic up with her is like asking for a death wish," Aegis agreed, earning a giggle from Eirene in response. It was shortly after doing so, that Eirene perked up with a panicked expression on her face, her eyes alarmed as they made contact with Aegis once more.

"Wait, you didn't deny it. Does that mean the two of you…"

Aegis held up his palms reassuringly, attempting to calm the rattled state of Eirene.

"No, not at all. Gaia and I have a strictly professional relationship… in fact I think she still hates my guts for earning the promotion over her," Aegis explained, managing to cause Eirene to breathe a sigh of relief.

That's rather noteworthy, he thought, studying her expression as she put a reassured hand over her chest. She seems to be glad that there's no truth to the rumours.

"Ahh, I see! Um… well I'm sorry people are spreading these rumours about the two of you," Eirene offered her condolences, which promoted Aegis to shrug.

"It's no concern to me, gossip is a prominent part to every work place. Addressing it will only instigate more spread," Aegis responded, as Eirene put one of her legs over the other, whilst also leaning forward to engage further with the conversation.

"I'm happy it isn't getting to you, I know it would infuriate Gaia if she heard," Eirene laughed, her delicate voice a pleasant tone to the ears. "But I don't think she hates your guts as you put it. She'd never admit it, but… she seems to admire you in many ways. That's why I had my own suspicions."

"That does explain a lot," Aegis commented, reflecting on many of the times Gaia had indirectly praised him during the games development. "I'm not sure of her thoughts on me personally, but she has grown passionate about my plans for the games. As long as we're on the same page there, Gaia and I can act amicable."

"Only amicable huh? Is that what you think of all your work friends?" Eirene teased, jokingly suggesting Aegis was only friendly out of obligation. Little did Eirene know, she wasn't far off the mark with that assumption. The word 'friends' was certainly a stretch when Aegis considered these people of no higher importance than an acquaintance. Naturally, this wasn't something Aegis intended to reveal, instead forcing a humoured smile that made his facial muscles twitch, the unfamiliar sensation feeling alien to him.

"Of course not," he responded, the lie coming far more naturally to him than the smile. "I value everyone here, I just have trouble expressing it."

Eirene seemed to believe his words, a small smile arising on her face as she played with her hair, twirling it around on her finger almost rhythmically.

"E-even me?" Eirene propositioned softly, her eyes evading his own, as a small blush arose on her face.

"Yes, perhaps even more so than the rest. You're an integral part of our team, I couldn't hold them together anywhere near as well without you," Aegis informed her, planting a small smile on Eirene's face as her blush grew to deeper shades of pink.

"That means a lot, coming from you. I-I've really grown to admire you as well," Eirene stammered, her words slurring a little due to the intoxication levels in her system. Aegis felt his body suddenly tense up, as Eirene rested her hand over his, her fingers gently grazing his and eliciting tingles up his arm from the both unexpected and unfamiliar sensation. He didn't know what to make of the act, in fact he felt it was overstepping boundaries in a fair few ways. Yet, he had never experienced a physical gesture that felt so minuscule, yet so intimate simultaneously. Although his brain told him it was a good idea to pull his hand away, somehow it felt frozen to the spot, whether it be out of a faint curiosity to assess where Eirene was going with this, or perhaps not to draw out a potentially awkward encounter from doing so. Ultimately, he decided to let the girls hand linger, which only seemed to encourage her train of thought.

"I often wonder why you always kept to yourself so much before all this, I wish I had noticed you even sooner," Eirene said softly, almost at a whisper. "Now I feel like Gaia takes up all of your attention."

Eirene slumped forward a little, a hint of unfamiliar bitterness latching on to her words as she mentioned Gaia. Now, Aegis was by no means an expert with women, with his exposure to them never surmounting the bare necessities of school of work colleagues, and conversations with them typically being very surface-level small talk. Of course, there were the outliers such as Gaia, the conversations he had with the blue-haired vixen being incessant insults from her and aloof dismissals from him.

There was also Anastasia Thorne, who on the rare occasion should he run into her, would eye him with contempt but always refrain from lashing out. It was as if their first interaction had extinguished part of her confidence in regards to him, and perhaps there was some influence from Atticus's threats against Aegis, making her fear for her own safety by interacting with him at all.

Eirene however, if Aegis was not to be mistaken, within that very moment; appeared to be hitting on him. The very same woman who many of those around him appeared infatuated with, but always appeared so unobtainable due to her apparent naivety to every advancement made towards her. Eirene had always been the subject of desire for many of his colleagues, a multitude of them enthralled by her genuine kindness towards them which as far as he could see was indiscriminate. She seemed to have a habit of making people feel special, even though she would likely never do so with the intention of leading them on. Yet it always worked like a charm, and whether it be unknown or not to Eirene; she effortlessly catches the eye of most people she befriends.

This situation presently however, it was the first Aegis had seen her act this way. The complimenting, the flirtatious mannerisms, her shy yet forward demeanour; Aegis had only ever seen this type of thing from afar, certainly not directed at himself of all people.

The question on the forefront of Aegis's mind however, was why? Why had Eirene started acting this way around him? He had never sensed any interest in him from her before… had the sudden rumours of Gaia and himself had anything to do with it?

Perhaps I'm overthinking it, she is drunk after all, Aegis thought to himself, brushing off Eirene's potential hints.

"There's no particular reason I kept to myself," he finally responded, capturing Eirene's attention once more. "I'm quite simply not that big of a presence. It would have remained the same had I not become the Head Gamemaker."

"No, not at all! I don't think that's the case," Eirene cried out, resisting Aegis's humility. "You undersell yourself!"

Aegis found Eirene's words rather humorous, not that he'd reveal that in the slightest. Underselling himself was quite literally his whole spiel. Aegis knew what he was capable of, and the people around him couldn't imagine the extent of it even in their wildest dreams. However, as his father had taught him, he had to be careful of what he allowed people to see of him - now was not the time nor place to unleash his intellect and capabilities.

Glimpses of it were acceptable, it had been enough to subjugate Gaia for the time being, and clearly had some affect on the adoration Eirene had developed for him. He had drawn the attention he needed, for now it was sufficient.

"I'd like to think… that maybe…" Eirene started, before her eyes widened and her words trailed off. "N-never mind, it isn't important."

"I don't mind Eirene, speak what's on your mind," Aegis responded, sensing Eirene's reluctance with whatever she had been about to say. Eirene bit her lip, averting her gaze as she seemingly tried to get over her apprehensions.

"Well…" she continued, only managing the one word before the two of them were interrupted.

"Alright you idiots, it's time to shut up - the Reapings are about to start!" Gaia's shrill voice cut through the noisy atmosphere, silencing Eirene whose attention turned to the authoritative stance of Gaia, who stood in front of the large screen that would be displaying the Reapings with her hands on her hips. Her eyes were trained on the table of Carrion and the other Gamemakers who had encouraged Aegis to join them several minutes prior, all of which were snickering and laughing with each other profusely. "What are you all so worked up about anyway?"

"Yeah what gives? I know Gaia's bets are ridiculous but they're not that funny," Flax spoke up as he ran his fingers through his thick, red hair, earning a death glare from Gaia consequently. Carrion continued to grin for a few moments, before finally managing to cease his profuse chuckling, whilst the others around him struggled to contain their own.

"Oh it's nothing," Carrion laughed, his eyes resting on both Aegis and Eirene. "We were just speculating something."

Gaia's eyes followed the gaze of the occupants of the table, landing on Aegis and his proximity to Eirene, the two of them having been noticed conversing together. Gaia's face was blank for a moment, before her expression fell slightly as she analysed the pair. Aegis could see how it might've looked, with Eirene sitting with her body leant forward, a finger twirling through her hair, her leg propped over the other, and the act that was most incriminating; her hand still rested over his. Considering she was usually quite reserved with her composure, she certainly must've looked a little… comfortable.

Eirene appeared to realise how it must've looked as well, as she quickly leaned back, pulling her hand away and straightening her posture as she tried to hide the embarrassment on her face.

"W-why are you looking at us? We're just talking!" Eirene exclaimed defensively, her tone far more frantic than her usual angelic pitch.

"Just talking huh?" Gaia responded flatly, clearly far from impressed.

"Am I not allowed to speak to a colleague, Gaia?" Aegis questioned softly, coming to Eirene's defence. Gaia froze for a moment, before appearing rather flustered.

"I-I never said that, nor that I have a problem with it!" She insisted, a defiant tone in her voice. Knowing Gaia, she might've made a bigger deal out of it than was needed, hence Aegis felt it necessary to step in before making the situation more of a mess. Whichever way Gaia may have interpreted the scene before her, he knew that she was fiercely protective of Eirene; there was no saying how she might've escalated the insinuation that Eirene and himself were conversing in any way that exceeded their roles as colleagues.

"I do appreciate you bringing everyone's attention together though," Aegis said, as he stood up from his stool and began making his way towards the front of the room where Gaia resided. He twirled the glass as it was clenched between his fingers, swirling the liquid within it as he steadily approached the screen with everyone's eyes trained on him. "As Gaia mentioned, the Reapings are officially about to start within a matter of minutes, so there are some things I'd like to say beforehand."

As Aegis reached the edge of the room, taking a spot next to Gaia, he could sense her tensing up due to his proximity, her eyes trained on him with curiosity despite her expression that feigned disinterest. The rest of the Gamemakers did the same, some of which who observed him with hazy eyes influenced by alcohol, and others that paid close attention such as Eirene, who appeared quite focused on Aegis in the same manner as she had a moment ago. Aegis left his words suspended in the silent air for a moment, mimicking the same energy President Thorne had done before announcing the recipient of the vacant Head Gamemaker role.

"Firstly, I'd like to thank you all for what we have achieved thus far. You've all been very cooperative with my transition into this role, and what we have come up with as a result… is sure to shake all of Panem to its core," Aegis spoke up, earning several cheers and acts of applause from the group before him.

"What we're about to witness, is the selection of the first crop of tributes to be under my domain. It's unprecedented how these tributes will respond to what we have in store for them," Aegis continued, his eyes turning to the screen which displayed the Reaping stage situated over in District 1's City Square. His eyes washed over the image of grand structures and fine architecture, buildings that were so nice they could've been located in the Capitol if he didn't know otherwise. Among the masses of people that had gathered in front of the stage, Aegis knew he was looking at two likely volunteers hidden within the flood of people.

"But what we do know, is that these tributes are about to go through hell; that is emotionally, physically, and most certainly psychologically," Aegis remarked, almost ominously as he pictured the reactions of the tributes once they discovered the chaotic surprise they were destined to experience in the arena. What the tributes faced, was certain to disrupt the way they expected the games to flow, they'd be forced to adapt, improvise, and depend on people they may consider their enemy. This was all because, in Aegis's arena, friends and allies that tributes thought they could trust - could quite possibly turn against each other in an instant.

"With that being said," Aegis finished, raising a glass to the ceiling as he directed his attention back to the Gamemakers. "Let's pay our respects to the unfortunate fates of those selected today. A toast to our tributes."

The Gamemakers all simultaneously cheered, all mirroring Aegis as they raised their glasses to the air, before erupting once more into excited chatter. As Aegis brought the rim of the glass to his lips, his eyes locked with Gaia's, who silently sipped her own drink. After finishing her mouthful, she shook her head with an amused expression on her face.

"You talk so matter-of-factly about the torture these kids are about to go through… you're a cruel man Aegis Harrow," Gaia chuckled, earning a shrug of indifference from Aegis.

"I never claimed not to be."

Author's Note:

And here we are, we finally have our full cast of tributes! I'm really glad to have gotten to this point, so that now we can really begin this story with all of your amazing submissions. As can be seen above, I have included the list of our lucky (or unlucky) participants for this upcoming arena, as well as a small teaser description for each describing a key part of their character for you to speculate on before being introduced to them. It was a lot of fun coming up with those, so I hope all of them give a sufficient insight into who your tribute might be up against. The list is also on my profile with a slightly different format that displays every submitter's name next to their tribute if that's something you're curious to see. Interestingly enough, the youngest tributes almost came in exclusively at fifteen years-old this time around, until the last submission came in at fourteen. So for the most part, this tribute cast is on the older side. Additionally, I want to express my apologies to anyone who's Tribute wasn't accepted, there weren't all that many that this happened to, but if it did, it was due to the earlier submissions that had lots of competition before it became first come first serve. It wasn't due to a lack of quality that your tribute may not have been accepted, but rather what suited as the best fit for the story I plan on portraying. With that being said, there was plenty of time to submit more for a guaranteed spot in the later stages of the submission period, so to those that did help me out with filling those slots I'm very appreciative of it! I do hope that for any of those that missed out, you'd consider submitting again if I ever get around to a sequel.

That is talk for the future however, as now it's time to focus on the present. For this chapter, we see our last glimpse of Aegis and the Gamemakers for a little while as they prepare to watch the Reapings live and celebrate the start of the Hunger Games period. This time around, we get to see a little more of Eirene, who seems to have developed some affections for Aegis. What should Aegis make of this? Does it say something about the influence he has on people around him? Aegis's monologue also describes a little as to what sort of affect the arena may have on the tributes, an arena that could cause friends to become enemies, and enemies to become friends. Does this have to do with the twist Aegis has planned for the arena? What might it involve? I'd love to hear your thoughts and theories!

So that just about wraps things up for this chapter, I had a lot of fun writing it and I'm really excited to start planning the pre-games phase with all of your lovely characters! I've already got a few ideas and I'm very curious to see how they turn out. At this point in time, it's tough for me to even decide both Victor or Bloodbath candidates, so that says something about the quality of tributes you all have provided me with! Now in terms of the tribute introductions phase, I did promise I'd reveal how I plan on formatting it. As I mentioned, I won't be doing the traditional twelve reaping chapters, but rather the following:

There will be a total of six tribute introduction chapters, all of which will consist of four POV's. The focus of each will be - Week Before The Reapings, Night Before The Reapings, The Reapings, Goodbye Sessions, Train Ride I, and finally Train Ride II.

That's the timeline for the next several chapters, and I look forward to introducing each and every one of your tributes. I plan on giving every tribute at least two POV's before the games commence, with the second one set to come during the Capitol phase of the story. I'm not exactly sure when Chapter 5 will be ready to come out, however I have already began writing it and it is close to halfway complete. Thank you once again for everyone that submitted, especially those that churned out a few characters each to help fill out the roster! Until next time.
