Legacies and Lightning: Chapter 8
Konoha (3 years later); Naruto's apartment: With Naruto
Naruto's alarm clock went off, beeping loudly as Naruto opened his eyes and looked at the time "Seven AM… great" Naruto said as he hit the button on his alarm clock and sat up while yawning "another day of D-rank missions…yay".
Naruto got out of his bed and looked at himself and analyzed his appearance; Naruto was now 12 years old and stood at 5 feet tall. Naruto's body was more toned to it due to working out with Guy sensei and the manual labor he does in D-rank missions; his blonde spiky hair was longer and the front nearly covers his eyes.
"I should get Kurenai sensei to cut my hair again" Naruto said dully as he walked to his closet and opened it up; Naruto grabbed his cloths and began to put them on. After a few minutes Naruto looked at himself in the mirror.
Naruto's new cloths were an amalgamation of cloths he bought and was gifted from Anko, Kurenai, Yakumo and Hiruzen. Naruto wore dark blue cargo pants he bought from Tenten's store, a black shirt with a orange thorn like patterns from Kurenai, a trench coat from Anko and a special black glove on his left hand from Yakumo.
Yakumo had a black glove made in the same pattern of the white glove from Yuui that Naruto wore on his right hand; while it provided no utilitarian advantage it looked a lot better than just having one glove.
Finally Naruto wore his forehead protector on his forehead to hold back his hair; Naruto made a hand sign and his trench cloak proofed into smoke and he now only wore his black T-shirt he got from Kurenai
Kurenai custom made twelve of these shirts for Naruto because she wanted him to have something stylish and personal; the orange thorns were there because it was Naruto's favorite color and she thought it'd be a nice little reminder of her. On the back of the shirt was a white storage seal made by Tenten so he can seal and unseal his extra Fuma shuriken's or his trench coat in case it ever got cold or started raining.
Naruto moved to a table and put on his kunai pouch, shuriken leg holster and picked up a special sheath holding a collapsed Fuma shuriken; Naruto put the shuriken and the sheath behind him and focused his chakra.
'Lightning Style: Static Strings' Naruto created four static strings from his back to the sheath and pulled it to his body; Naruto pulled on the sheath and it didn't move 'always good to double check' he thought.
The sheath was special made by Hiruzen as it reacted with chakra; Naruto with advice from Hiruzen practiced with his static strings so much that he basically can hold the sheath in place with his jutsu the entire day and it'll take up as much chakra as if Naruto created a single lighting clone.
"Alright then" Naruto said as he began to walk out of his apartment "back to the old grind".
1 hour later; at the Training grounds: With Naruto and Yakumo
Naruto and Yakumo were both eating breakfast together as per their usual routine; Naruto looked over to Yakumo and saw how much she changed. Yakumo was no longer the shy sickly girl he met all those years ago; over the years Yakumo got a lot healthier, although her pale skin made it seem like she never been out in the sun.
Yakumo wore a pink shirt under a dark red jacket, maroon pants, black sandals and a forehead protector around her neck; Yakumo's long brown hair flowed down her back like a chocolate water fall. Naruto thought she was beautiful and constantly had to chase boys away as even though Yakumo has grown a lot, she's still very soft spoken.
"You doing good Yakumo?" Naruto asked and Yakumo nodded as she sipped some tea.
"Of course Naruto, everyday day is a blessing" Yakumo said with a smile "how are you?"
"Bah…" Naruto said as he rubbed the back of his head.
"Oh no… I know that sound" Yakumo said with a sigh "Naruto I get it, you're bored; but things could be worse".
"I know, I know; it's just-" Naruto said before pausing "I've been a ninja for three years already, you've been a ninja for one; when are we going to get some real missions?"
Naruto kicked the dirt and looked at the ground "All we've been doing is these stupid D-rank missions; I'm sick of it" Naruto said "I've busted my ass learning lightning jutsu, taijutsu and all other kind of stuff, and now look at me". "I'm a day laborer posing as a ninja" Naruto said "all because of the village's 'no children on C-ranks rule'".
"Well they have a reason for that Naruto" Yakumo said and Naruto growled.
"So, one dude wipes out his clan and they think 'we'll it's probably because he had PTSD; better put up a rule to stop it'" Naruto said in a mocking voice "I mean seriously, they made him an anbu captain at thirteen but I can't do a C-rank at twelve?"
"Hey, you two" Anko shouted as she and Kurenai entered the training area; both Anko and Kurenai were full jonin now. Unlike Naruto and Yakumo they both were going on C to B rank missions while Naruto and Yakumo had to stay behind "Naruto bitching again about D-ranks?" Anko asked.
"Yes" Yakumo said and Naruto huffed in annoyance.
"Well cheer up Naruto" Kurenai said as she walked up to him and patted him on the shoulder "because we have a surprise for you".
"What? Some old lady need her gutters cleaned, some children need a camp councilor?" Naruto asked but then back tracked "actually, I take that back; I actually enjoy those missions".
Flashback 5 months ago: The training grounds
Naruto and Yakumo were both sitting at a camp fire at night with about eight little kids from the academy; Naruto was given four kids to look after and Yakumo was also given four.
Naruto's group consisted of Konohamaru Sarutobi, the third Hokage's grandson who had spiky brown hair and a long blue scarf.
Moegi Kazamatsuri, a girl with with orange hair tied into two pig tails that stood up; she was Konohamaru's friend and class mate.
Udon Ise, a boy with glasses and a constant runny nose who was also Konohamaru's friend and classmate.
And rounding out the 4 that Naruto was watching was Hanabi Hyuga, Hinata's younger sister and Heiress to the Hyuga clan; Hanabi had long brown hair, lavender eyes and wore a set of her clans purple short sleeve shirt and pants.
"-And then that's when Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usop, Sanji, Chopper, Robin, Brook and Franky realized… that the true treasure… was the friends they met along the way" Naruto said finishing his story "the end".
Konohamaru and the others all looked at him wide eyed and then he spoke "wow…" he said.
"That was a great story Naruto" Yakumo said with a smile.
"Seriously that's it?" Hanabi said speaking up "we spent the last two years listening to that story for that ending; that was the treasure of the 'One Piece'?"
"What's wrong with the story?" Naruto asked and Hanabi began to fume.
"It was too darn long and not enough pay off in the end" Hanabi said "I mean seriously, you take twenty seven years of material to make a story and that's how it ends?". "I swear if the writer of that manga ends it like that… I can guarantee the whole fan base is going to be on suicide watch" Hanabi said crossing her arms "your fan fiction sucks".
Naruto began to grow red with anger and pointed at Hanabi.
"How about you a nice hot cup of shut the fu-" Naruto began but Yakumo bonked him on the head before he could speak.
"Who wants to roast marshmallows" Yakumo said trying to change the subject and the kids all cheered in agreement.
Hanabi looked at Naruto as he grumbled and roasted a marshmallow 'he's such a vulgar boy, about to curse me out' Hanabi thought; Hanabi then began to blush and smile 'he's such a rebel'. 'Just wait Naruto; one day I'll make you mine' Hanabi thought to herself; unknown to Naruto and basically everyone else Hanabi got a crush on her sister crush.
Flashback ends
"I swear if the story does end like that; I WILL kill myself" Anko said and Kurenai looked at her.
"Oh come on; don't be so dramatic" Kurenai said "it's just an anime"; Naruto and Anko both snapped their heads at Kurenai and gave her a look. 'Kami above, I'm the only real adult here' Kurenai thought rolling her eyes "anyway me and Anko are here for a special reason". Kurenai looked at Naruto with a smile "we are going on a… C-rank mission" Kurenai said with a dramatic pause.
Naruto was frozen in place upon hearing this and looked a her wide eyed "what did you say?" Naruto asked and Kurenai smiled.
"We are going on a C-rank mission; as a double team" Kurenai said; the next thing Kurenai knew Naruto hugged her tight and began to squeeze.
"YESSS!!!" Naruto cheered before he gave Kurenai a kiss on the cheek and began spinning her around making her scream.
"Naruto stop! I get it" Kurenai shouted; Yakumo and Anko were both laughing at the sight of Naruto spinning Kurenai around. After a few seconds Naruto stopped and he put Kurenai down and she nearly lost her balance due to the dizziness.
"Lets go, let's go; I want to get the hell out of here" Naruto said as he grabbed Yakumo by the hand and basically began to drag her to the Hokage's office.
Kurenai's dizziness subsided and she looked at Anko "looks like someone owes me some money" Kurenai chirped and Anko nodded as she reached down her shirt and pulled out a billfold.
"Yeah, yeah" Anko said as she began to count the money "one thousand for a hug, on thousand for a cheer and one thousand for a kiss". Anko handed Kurenai the money "three thousand Ryo, but minus two thousand for me; would've been more if he didn't spin you and grab Yakumo" she said.
"Hey, I still won" Kurenai said as she put the money in her pocket "I thought he's also shoot lightning into the air and cry; if he did I'd have three thousand Ryo". "But good call on Yakumo, I thought he'd just run off; and the spinning I thought he'd do that goofy dance he does sometimes" Kurenai said and Anko chuckled.
"Hey… he's my apprentice" Anko said "come on, lets head to the old man before Naruto starts something?"
Kurenai nodded and they both began to chase after Naruto and Yakumo.
Hokage Tower: With Naruto, Anko, Kurenai, Yakumo and Hiruzen
Naruto was barely able to keep in his excitement as he was basically bouncing on his heels waiting to hear about this mission; Hiruzen seeing how excited Naruto was smiled. Hiruzen hated that he had to make Naruto wait a few years to finally do a C-rank mission but it was the law he made.
Hiruzen not wanting to make another Itachi forbid any genin under the age of 12 from going on a C-rank mission; but Naruto was old enough and trained enough to go on a C-rank.
"Well you seem excited Naruto" Hiruzen said with a smile.
"Ohohoho, I'm stoked" Naruto said looking at Hiruzen with anticipation "so what do we got? An assassination mission, save a princess, take out some bandits?"
Hiruzen looked at Naruto seriously and spoke in a serious tone "I have an important document needed delivered" Hiruzen said as he held up a scroll "this scroll is of the utmost importance, if this message is not delivered… the fate of our village and the village it needs to go to will be in jeopardy".
Anko spoke up next "where will we be going Lord third?" Anko asked and Hiruzen looked at her.
"Kusagakure, we have a very fragile relation with that village; this document is important for village relations" Hiruzen said and Anko nodded.
Hiruzen looked to Naruto and Yakumo who were both wide eyed "Naruto, Yakumo… this mission is not to be taken lightly" he said "even though this is a C-rank mission that doesn't negate any risks of combat". "I recommend you prepare yourselves for intense combat" Hiruzen said as he looked at the four ninja in front of him "I have faith in you all; don't let me and the village down".
"Yes lord Hokage" Naruto and Yakumo shouted at the same time; Naruto looked to Yakumo and spoke.
"Come on Yakumo; we should see Tenten and buys some supplies" Naruto said and Yakumo nodded.
Kurenai looked at them and spoke "go on ahead without us you two; we need to speak to Lord third" she said "meet us tomorrow at the North gate at eight AM".
"Ok Kurenai sensei" Yakumo said before looking at Naruto "lets go Naruto"; Yakumo and Naruto both left the room and when they were far enough away Anko spoke up.
"Ok so what really is that scroll" Anko asked and Hiruzen chuckled and spoke.
"It's just an invitation to the upcoming chunin exams being held in six months" Hiruzen said and Anko laughed "I just thought if I made the mission sound more important than what it really was it would light a fire in Naruto". "I mean, he's been waiting for this for years; why should I crush the boys expectations" Hiruzen said and Kurenai chuckled.
"Well I'm sure Naruto will take it seriously" Kurenai said and Hiruzen nodded "after all once he sets his mind to something, he doesn't quit until either he passes out or it breaks".
At 'The Rusty Kunai': With Naruto and Yakumo
Naruto and Yakumo both walked into the weapons shop and immediately turned to the counter and saw two people standing there.
"Naruto,Yakumo, how's it going?" Tenten said excited to see her friend and her long time customer; Tenten was now a genin but still worked in the shop during her time off.
"Naruto, my youthful friend; how are you?" said Rock Lee looking at Naruto and then Yakumo "and Ms.Yakumo, you look well". Naruto smiled and Yakumo blushed at Lee; Lee was Tenten's teammate and Guy sensei's star pupil.
Lee looked just like Guy sensei despite not being related to him; from the bowl cut, to the jumpsuit, to the orange leg warmers.Naruto liked Lee because he was a good sparring partner and pushed him to his limits.
Lee couldn't use ninjutsu or genjutsu so he was a sole practitioner of taijutsu; Lee trained his butt off and was faster, stronger and more agile than his peers.
Naruto had to use his lighting cloak just to be able to stand a chance against him; and even though Naruto wasn't a slouch at Taijutsu Lee was in a different level all together. But Lee and Guy usually tried to make the fight fair by either having Lee fight with no arms or increasing the weights he wears on his ankles.
"Sup guys; glad to see you" Naruto said with a bright smile.
"Hello Tenten, h-hello Lee" Yakumo said with a smiling blush; Naruto seeing this chuckled at Yakumo's bashfulness. Naruto, Kurenai, Anko and Tenten all knew about Yakumo's crush on Lee; Yakumo got a crush on Lee after they met for the first time nearly two years ago when Guy brought him over to train. Yakumo liked Lee because of his upbeat attitude, hit hard work ethic and she thought he was cute… despite the jumpsuit.
"What you guys doing here?" Tenten asked as Naruto and Yakumo walked up to the counter and Naruto spoke.
"Guess what; we finally got a C-rank mission" Naruto said with excitement and both Lee and Tenten looked surprised at this "we came here to get some stuff; is my order done?"
"Oh my god congrats Naruto; I'm happy to hear that" Tenten said with a smile "and yes your order is ready, I'll grab your things; is there anything else?"
Yakumo spoke up at this "can we get some body armor that can fit under our cloths?" Yakumo asked and Tenten nodded.
"Yeah, we just got a shipment in a while ago; I'll grab two" Tenten said as she walked to the back room; Naruto turned to Lee and spoke.
"So Lee, is Neji still a asshole?" Naruto asked and Yakumo looked at him.
"Naruto, how rude" Yakumo said and Naruto shrugged.
"Oh come on, Neji's an dick" Naruto said "he's has the biggest superiority complex I know other than Sasuke, he's some upper crust asshole from a clan who looks down on people, and just like with Sasuke, people won't stop sucking his dick… he's standing behind me isn't he?"
Yakumo and Lee nodded and Naruto spun around and saw Neji Hyuga; Neji had the trademark Hyuga eyes, long brown hair, and a permanent scowl. Neji wore a white armor jacket, brown shorts and had bandages over his arms and legs.
"Hello Naruto" Neji said with a scowl "what were you just talking about?"
Naruto got into Neji's face and spoke "Hey Neji, nothing much, just talking about how much of a bastard you are; you wanna hear it again, I'll repeat it word for word?"
Naruto and Neji didn't get along for a variety of reasons; Neji's superiority complex and arrogance, Naruto's lack of clan status and wealth and the fact that Neji learned that Naruto learned Lightning jutsu from a Kumo ninja. Naruto had fought Neji on numerous occasions but has never won because he's a 'genius' as they say; Naruto was able to beat Lee one out of four times in a fight and Tenten one out of every two.
Their relationship was cold at best.
"Still practicing that garbage chakra nature?" Neji said with a arrogant smirk "it won't do you any good against me or anyone else; once a failure always a failure". "And I'll enjoy seeing you fall" Neji said and Naruto smirked as he clenched his fist.
"Wanna have a go at it pretty boy?" Naruto said his right fist crackling with lightning "I'm always looking for a reason to beat your ass".
Neji activated his Byakugan "bring it peasant" Neji said smirking as well.
"HEY!" Tenten shouted as she came back into the room "no fighting in the store; if you act up in here I'll use those new bull whips we just got in".
"Ok Tenten; sorry" Naruto said as he canceled his lighting and Neji deactivated his Byakugan and huffed.
"Whatever; I came here to tell you and Lee that we have a mission" Neji said "meet in the training ground in two hours". Neji turned to Naruto and spoke "until next time" he said.
Naruto proceeded to flip him the bird and Neji spun around and walked out of the store "god I hate that guy" Naruto said as he turned around.
"Neji's lived a hard life Naruto" Lee said.
"So have I, so have you; your parents died when you were five, I never even met mine" Naruto said as he walked up to the counter "losing a parent doesn't give you the right to be an asshole".
Tenten sighed and spoke "anyway, here it is; two collapsible Fuma shuriken freshly repaired and two ceramic armor kits" she said; Naruto looked at the armor and was impressed.
It was a six inch (wide) by ten inch (long) ceramic plate stitched into a Kevlar vest with two adjustable straps that go into an 'X' on the back.
"They're cheap, lightweight and more comfortable than the steel ones; it'll cover the heart, lungs and the majority of the sternum " Tenten said patting the vests "down side is that after the armor inside breaks it's basically done for; but it'll stop a kunai or a shuriken from killing you".
"Aww sweet; I wonder why people don't wear these more often" Naruto said as he picked up a vest.
"Don't know; comfort, too poor, don't think that they need it" Tenten said with a shrug "chunin and jonin wear their flak jackets which provides some protections; but some still buy armor to have a little extra sense of security". "Neji uses steel plates in his and Guy sensei has one on his back" Tenten said and Naruto nodded.
"Ok so how much; I'll pay for Yakumo's too" Naruto said pulling out his frog wallet.
"What? You don't have to do that" Yakumo said and Naruto brushed it off.
"No problem; I saved a lot of money from those D-ranks we've been doing all these years" Naruto said with a twitch of his eyebrow "oh yeah and any points I have just use them".
Tenten nodded and began to do the math "Ok for the shuriken repairs and the two vests along with the points you are using, that'll be… twenty thousand, five hundred and sixty two Ryo (about 140 USD)" Tenten said and Naruto went wide eyed. "Congrats you saved two thousand, five hundred Ryo" Tenten said.
"Holy crap that's cheap" Naruto said as he handed her the money and Tenten took it and gave him a receipt "thanks Tenten, see you when we get back; bye Lee have fun".
"Bye Naruto, be safe" Tenten said with a smile and a wave.
"Bye Naruto, bye Yakumo; tell me all about your mission when you get back" Lee said and Naruto nodded.
"Oh Yakumo will be doing that; she's a real talker" Naruto said making Yakumo go wide eyed as he grabbed the stuff.
"Well I'll look forward to hearing Yakumo when she returns" Lee said and Yakumo nodded while blushing.
"O-ok then; bye Lee" Yakumo said as she and Naruto left the store; upon leaving Yakumo looked to Naruto and spoke "you're a meanie". Naruto chuckled and they both walked down the street and away from the shop.
The Next Day; North Gate (8 am): With Naruto, Anko, Kurenai and Yakumo
Naruto carrying his backpack and wearing his new armor under his shirt was standing with Anko, Kurenai and Yakumo who were also with their back packs. Naruto was smiling as he was excited to finally be leaving the village.
Anko seeing how excited Naruto and Yakumo were couldn't help but smile herself as she looked over at Kurenai "you ready?" Anko asked and Kurenai nodded.
"First C-rank mission as a jonin sensei" Kurenai said with a smile "a giant mile stone".
Anko nodded and looked to Naruto and Yakumo "ok brats; diamond formation" Anko said "I'll take point, Kurenai will take rear, Naruto take left and Yakumo take right". "Stay on your toes and keep a look out; every time we're outside these gates we're in 'Indian country'" Anko said "never let your guard down and stay close; any questions?"
Naruto and Yakumo shook their heads and Anko spoke with a smile "alright then; lets roll" she said as they assumed a diamond formation and walked out of the village.
