A/N: I'm BAAAAAACCCCCCKKKK! Did y'all miss me? :3 So I'm veering from Outlast (Shocking right?) and going for a different approach. I'm hoping that Ky plays this game, but that's why I wanted to put my spin on it. A special thank you needs to be given to my friend KyzerAndTheVoices. Without him, I wouldn't have been inspired to write this.
So let's get this out of the way: I do not own the characters or franchise of The Mortuary Assistant or Undertale/Underswap. This was just a silly idea I came up with. All rights go to their respectful owners of DarkStone Digital, publisher DreadXP, and Toby Fox. Another thing is this will be on both my wattpad and Ao3.
Also there will be cursing and disturbing imagery in this story. You have been warned. Buckle your seatbelts folks! We're in for another spooky ride!
Fear. That's an interesting concept. A four letter word that describes the emotion of being alert in the presence of danger. It both biological and chemical in our nature. Fears can lead to many health issues, so why is it that as humans we find scary things entertaining? Is it the adrenaline that pumps through our veins when we know something is about to jump out? Is it the concept that monsters could be real? Morbid curiosity? Why do we like feeling scared?
This was a constant thought in Blue' mind. Fear to him was a strange concept. He hated getting scared, but in a sense it was… fun? He shook his head, trying to get the idea of fear out of his skull. That wasn't important right now. What he needed to focus on now was the new game Kyzer had purchased on Steam. Blue had been doing his research about the game and found that the game consisted of him playing as an assistant in a mortuary, but with spooky things happening within the background. He wrung his gloves hands softly as he watched his fatherly figure untangle cords, letting out a hissed curse word every now and again. "Ky? Do you need some help?" Blue asked him.
"Nope! I think I got it!" Kyzer said, popping his head back up to look at the blue clad skeleton. He was covered in wires and cords, which caused Blue to chortle over his appearance as Kyzer looked like a mad scientist covered in that many cords. "Gah! Fuck! One of these cords just shocked me!"
"Well, maybe we need to throw that one away." Blue smirked.
"Hell no! Cords are expensive! I'll make it safe so that we can keep using it." Kyzer grinned.
"Whatever. Don't come crying to me when you get shocked again." Blue shrugged.
"Ooh someone is spicy today. What's with the attitude?" Kyzer asked, untangling himself from the pile of cords and wires. He sat beside the little skeleton and looked at him, seeing the look of confusion and other perplexing emotions written all over his face.
"I'm just… perplexed is all."
"About?"
Fear. "This new game Stretch and I are playing. You said it's about a haunted mortuary?"
"Yep. Basically you are working in a haunted morgue, embalming the decease." Kyzer said. "But something tells me that's not what is actually bothering you. Now spill. What's the actual reason?"
Blue sighed. "I don't understand why humans like to be scared. Is it an adrenaline rush? Morbid curiosity?" Blue asked. "Plus… What if this game sucks me in like the last two did?"
"A little of both. Humans like to get the rush from a good scare, plus morbid curiosity kinda takes over. And while I can't guarantee what will happen… what I can guarantee is that no matter what happens, we'll all be here for you." Kyzer smiled, giving the smaller skeleton a hug.
"Plus you have me by your side." Stretch said as he entered the room.
Blue smiled at Kyzer and Stretch, feeling a little bit better. "Thanks you two."
"No problem bud. I'll let you two get started on the recording. Paula and I have a romantic date planned~ Have fun!" Kyzer smiled as he stood up and left the room.
"You too!" Blue called out. He scooted over and gave Stretch some room to sit down as he looked the creepy demon on the screen, with the words "The Mortuary Assistant" displayed on the screen. He sighed as he handed a pair of headphones over to Stretch and got the recording software ready to record their adventures. He put his own headphones on and pressed record.
"Well folks it's been a while hasn't it? The last game I played was Kirby Star Allies and Stretch played Happy's Humble Burger Barn, so I'm a little rusty when it comes to playing the scary games again. Stretch? How was Happy's Humble Burger Barn?" Blue asked him as he clicked around on to get the game ready.
"A freakin' nightmare. Let me tell you, that game was weird! It was a simple precise of making burgers while creepy shit happened, but there was some nasty food orders in that game. Still can't believe it was a damn simulation." Stretch said as he leaned back in his chair.
"Ugh it sounds like it. Any-hoosen, hello ladies and gentlemen! And welcome to Blueberry Jams to The Mortuary Assistant! I am your host, The Magnificent Blue!" Blue exclaimed as he clicked on "New Game."
"And I am his apathetic, pun-loving co-host, Stretch."
"I'm not excited about this game. I've been told that we are working in a morgue… Which means we will have to deal with icky dead bodies." Blue groaned
"Ugh. That's not going to be fun. I'm already dead thinking about that." Stretch smirked.
"Really? A dead joke? You had to make that joke even though you're a skeleton? You just had to didn't you?" Blue asked in a deadpanned voice.
"Yep. I killed it with that joke!"
"STRETCH I SWEAR TO-!"
A loud noise cut Blue's sentence off, causing the Swap Bros to cover their non-existent ears and wince at the loud noise. A bright flash of light engulfed the two skeletons as they were yet again zapped into the game.
After a few agonizing minutes of being unconscious, Blue groaned as he woke up, rubbing his skull as a headache split his skull in half. "God, my head is killing me…" He groaned as he rubbed his eye sockets. As his vision cleared up, he saw that he and Stretch were sitting in an old diner booth with an older woman sitting across from him and Stretch, causing the smaller skeleton to yelp in surprise. "Who the hell are you?!"
The older woman looked at the character Blue and Stretch were posing as. " I'm so glad it's almost over. Congratulations sweetie."
Blue opened his mouth, but all that came out was a soft giggle and the reply, " Thank you." from a female character, the protagonist.
" I'll never understand why you chose such a… macabre field but-" The older woman started, but was instantly cut off by Blue's character.
" There's nothing disturbing about it! It's just-"
" -but I'm proud of you… I really am. You've come so far…"
Sans looked at his brother and shrugged. "I'm guessing this is our Gran Gran?"
"I guess so?" Stretch said.
" So! You haven't told me what's next. Will you get a job where you are or?" The grandmother asked.
" They actually have everyone they need. But my old teacher, Mr. Delver, transferred me to his office to finalize my internship there." The protagonist stated.
"That's actually really nice of our teacher." Blue smiled. "It gets our feet wet!"
"In more ways than one." Stretch said, nudging his brother's ribcage.
"Stretch don't-"
" Oh well that's good! I remember you mentioning him. Where's he located? Are you moving away from me?"
"Aw Gran Gran doesn't want us to leave her. That's sad. Maybe we won't be too far from her." Blue said.
Blue's character chuckled he picked up the coffee cup. " No. No. I'm not moving. He's actually located around here… River Fields." The protagonist replied.
" Oh Rebecca… I don't like that." the grandmother said, shaking her head.
"Why? What's wrong with River Fields?" Blue replied, feeling confused.
"Is it in the bad part of town?" Stretch asked.
" Grandma-" The protagonist, Rebecca, groaned.
" Even I've heard things about that place. I'd just be worried about you…" The grandmother said.
" People make up stories! Death is a scary thing to a lot of people. We try to explain things we don't understand and we want comfort when we lose someone we love. No one's embalming any ghost bodies or whatever. It's fine." Rebecca snapped at her grandma.
"Hey! Be nice to your Gran Gran! She's just concerned for your safety!" Blue said.
" Alright, alright. I'm sorry. But… I wanted to give you this anyway… so… here." The grandmother said as she set a rosary for her granddaughter/Blue on the diner's table.
" I… I don't know if I want that." Rebecca said softly.
"Hell I do!" Blue said.
"We'll need all the protection we can get!" Stretch said.
" Just take it. Please… It should be yours anyway." The grandmother pleaded.
A few minutes passed before Blue was allowed to pick up the rosary and put it in his pocket. Rebecca's character dialogue thanked her grandmother, making her/Blue look down in response.
" Alright. Enough spooky stuff! I'm so proud of you. When is all this happening? When do you start?" The grandmother asked.
An ambulance blared it's sirens outside the diner as Blue and Stretch glanced at one another. " I've actually been there for a few weeks now… my review is tomorrow." Rebecca's dialogue replied.
Sans and Stretch winced as the ambulance sirens and a firetruck's horn blasted, causing a horrible and shrill noise to resonate throughout their skulls. The Swap Bros were in for it now…
