Chapter 4
Dean woke first and found his clothes had been washed, folded, and lying neatly on the dresser. After checking that Sammy was still okay and sleeping, he went to the bathroom and then headed downstairs to find Bobby. He wandered into the kitchen where Bobby was sitting at the table reading the paper and drinking coffee.
"Morning Dean. Is your brother still sleeping?"
"Yeah, I didn't see any reason to wake him. Thanks for washing our clothes," Dean replied pouring a cup of coffee and sitting at the table with Bobby. He fidgeted for a moment as he tried to gather his thoughts to talk to the older hunter.
"You needed something clean to wear," Bobby shrugged. "Is something on your mind son?" he asked when he saw the confused, concerned look on the boy's face.
"It's Sammy," Dean finally said. "I'm worried about him."
"Why is that? Is he hurt?"
"No, nothing like that. You see, Sammy woke me up in the middle of the night to tell me something bad was coming and we needed to run. And it's a good thing I listened to him and we did."
"So, Sam knew you two were in danger?" Bobby surmised as he pursed his lips.
"That's right and when I questioned him about it…Well, he said he dreamed about it. It scared him and it's scared me too. How could he do that Bobby? How could he know those strangers were looking for us?"
"I can't rightly say son, but I don't think you should worry so about it. Has anything like this happened before?"
"No, not that I know. Or at least Sammy never mentioned anything to me about it. Is there something wrong with my brother?"
"No Dean, I don't think so," Bobby replied as he thought about Sam's dream and what it could mean.
"I should try calling Dad."
"I've already done that Dean. There was no answer, and I got his voicemail. I left a message for him to call me about some research I had for him."
"You didn't tell him we were with you?"
"No, if something has happened, I didn't want anyone knowing I had you boys. I've got some feelers out to other hunters to be on the lookout for your Daddy or the Impala. And if anyone hears any rumors, they are to contact me."
"Thanks Uncle Bobby," Dean sighs as he let his body slump forward. He was worried about their father now and what could have happened to him. "What if he was hurt or pissed off the wrong person and is in hiding or the monsters got to him? What if they wanted him dead?" Dean asked fearfully. Fear and uncertainty ate away at his soul, but he quickly hid it when Sammy appeared in the doorway of the kitchen.
"Hello young man, did you sleep okay?" Bobby greeted him with a warm smile.
"I guess," Sammy replied. He yawned and rubbed his eyes as he moved to sit down beside Dean.
"I ain't got much to eat but I can fix some eggs and toast until I get into town for a supply run," Bobby told them getting up to fix breakfast.
"Can I have some coffee?" Sammy asked while watching Dean drink his.
"Nope, it'll stunt your growth," Dean told him.
"There's milk in the fridge Sam; how 'bout a glass of that?"
"Okay Uncle Bobby. I can get it." Sam got up and went to the fridge to get the carton of milk and a glass. He poured a glass and set the carton on the counter for Bobby to use. He moved back to the table and sipped on the cold milk as he looked at Dean for a moment like he wanted to say something but didn't.
Dean studied Sammy and knew something was on his mind. He knew his little brother better than Sammy knew himself. There wasn't much he could hide from Dean. He didn't say anything for now thinking Sammy might talk to him one on one instead of with Bobby around.
"Here you go boys, eat up," Bobby announced sitting plates in front of each of them. "After you eat, wash your dishes and stay in the house. I'm going to run into town to replenish the pantry. Will you two be okay here alone?"
"Yes Uncle Bobby, we'll be fine," Dean told him. "I can take care of Sammy; I have been for a long time."
"I know you have Dean," Bobby told him hiding his true feelings. He knew Dean had to grow up too fast and wasn't given the chance to be a kid. "Don't answer the phone or the door. If anything happens, you two head downstairs to the panic room and lock yourselves in."
"You have a panic room?" Dean questioned in surprise. "When did you do that?"
"I had a free weekend. Now behave and don't be getting into anything. Do you two need anything from the store?"
"We could use some toothpaste and shampoo," Dean replied shyly. "I'm sure Dad will repay you when he comes to get us."
"Don't you be worrying about that. You can help me in the garage or something to pay me back."
"Uncle Bobby, can I use your computer?" Sammy asked.
"Go ahead, just don't mess anything up." Bobby patted Sam's shoulder before leaving to head into town.
"I won't." He didn't look at Dean as he forked eggs into his mouth and chewed.
Dean shoved his eggs into his mouth and gobbled them down. He had something to explore now and was anxious to see the panic room Bobby had built. When he was done, Dean took his plate and cup to the sink and ran some water to wash them. He told Sammy to wash his dishes and that he was going downstairs for a few minutes.
When Dean stepped onto the basement floor he looked around and finally spotted the iron door off to the right and walked over to it. He ran a hand over the surface and could feel a grainy substance on it. There was a lock on the outside and a viewing window. He pushed the door slowly open and craned his neck to see inside. Carefully, Dean stepped over the lip of the door and into the room.
There was a cot on one side of the room and a couple of desks with chairs against another wall and on the opposite walls were shelves filled with waters, canned foods, blankets, candles, matches, weapons, tools, bag of salt, holy water, and other odds and ends that you might need to stay in the room. Curtained off in a corner was a portable toilet beside a sink. He ran a hand over the weapons as he happened to look up and saw a large fan with a devil's trap painted on it. He thought this was awesome and wondered if Bobby had used it yet.
Sam finished his food and washed his dishes before heading to Bobby's office. He sat in the desk chair and pulled it closer so he could use the computer. After it booted up, Sam went online and typed in dreams trying to find anything that would explain his dreams. He scrolled through articles, skimming them and clicked on a link for psychic abilities. He found articles on premonitions and began to closely read them.
"Hey, what are you doing?" Dean asked when he stepped into the office.
"Nothing," Sam stammered quickly closing the windows before Dean saw them.
"You seem awfully jumpy with doing nothing," Dean questioned knowing Sam was trying to hide something. "Are you looking at naked women?"
"I was checking our email account to see if there's anything there from Dad," Sam snapped in disgust as his face reddened.
"Well, did you find anything?"
"No, nothing from Dad."
"Do you want to watch some television?"
"No, I think I'll read some," Sam replied getting up and grabbing a random book from a bookshelf nearby. He headed into the living room and plopped down on the couch before opening the book to see what he had picked up. He just hoped it was in English since his Latin wasn't that good yet.
Dean took Sam's place at the desk and spun the chair around a couple of times before tapping on some keys to go online. He looked at a few articles and then decided to check the search history to see what Sammy had been up to. He clicked on open and read the title making his breath catch in his chest. Dean began to read it and a chill ran down his back wondering why Sammy was researching this. Dean looked toward the living room and studied his brother's form on the couch, his concern for him had doubled.
