Chapter Thirteen: Darkroom
Sam's POV:
Andrew asked her to marry him, it was a shock. They'd only been dating for a few months and it hadn't been that long since they'd met. She wasn't ready to settle down and get married, not to him. Sam spent the night, going over it in her head. She had a feeling Andrew had asked her for the wrong reasons. They hadn't said they loved each other, she figured probably because if they had it would have been a lie. He was threatened by Peter, no matter how many times he said he wasn't there was no denying that and it was clear to her he was still high on the excitement of his new bike. Sam didn't want to hurt Andrew but her heart belonged to someone else, Peter Rivers and no matter how hard she tried she couldn't hide from that, she couldn't ignore her feelings.
So the next morning when he got back from the meeting at the school, she knew she couldn't wait any longer to tell him. He was upset but he understood, he understood that she didn't feel that way about him enough to make such a huge commitment. She felt bad for not telling him everything, that she was still in love with Peter but she also didn't want to admit that to herself, not fully so she left that part out.
Andrew surprised her in a way when she'd heard he'd handed in his notice, she'd never pegged him as the type to leave his job because of a relationship break down. Sam was in her classroom working on some lesson plans when Peter found her. Sam couldn't look at him when he asked if Andrew was leaving because of him, because she had split up with Andrew because of her feelings for Peter. He was right of course, that's why she walked away into the darkroom at the back of the class.
Peter followed her, a determined and unwavering look on his face. She didn't want him to talk at first but when he started, she couldn't stop herself from listening;
"You're the only person I've ever loved, you changed me. I'm mot sorry it didn't work out with Bell, it hurt me when you was with him" Peter said, she looked him in the eyes, for a brief second before looking away, trying to think of something else to do, to get out of the situation she was currently in.
"Peter, please don't..." Sam started, her voice was low and she was scared. Scared of what he might say next, what he might do because she was sure she wouldn't be able to resist him this time. Like all of the times before, when she knew being with Peter was wrong but she couldn't stop herself. Peter stopped her from walking away and they were now eye level, Sam couldn't look away.
"I want you" Peter said. His words were simple, they were true and suddenly she couldn't help herself. Peter leaned in and they kissed. Slowly at first, both of them seemingly feeling unsure of themselves. The feeling of his lips on hers, was familiar and electric. It was as if all that time she'd spent fighting her feelings for Peter didn't matter anymore, it was time wasted because this was what she truly wanted. Peter's hands on her, roaming around her body, sent fireworks down her body, made her regret the lost time they'd had. Her heart felt like it was about to explode, with all the love she felt for him. All those feelings she'd tried to hide from him, from herself were all coming out all at once in this exchange between them. The whole world could explode right now and she figured she wouldn't notice because she was finally happy again, in the arms of the man she loved. They tumbled go the floor, and all of a sudden she was straddling him, kissing him with such hunger, because that's what her body had been wanting all this time. She wanted him too and she couldn't deny it anymore. Not to Peter, not even to herself.
The door flew open and suddenly she was staring up at Andrew, the man who had proposed to her last night, who she had said no to this morning. She stopped in her tracks and the guilt of what she had just done, came over her like a tidal wave. Andrew stormed off and Sam was just left in the darkroom with Peter, she stood up and walked away.
Rivers POV:
Bell was hurt, that was evident when he came up to him in the courtyard. Peter ignored him, the words he said were bitter and untrue. He didn't believe that Sam truly loved him, but he knew all along that they were, especially after what they had done yesterday afternoon in the dark room. Bell was mocking him, trying to make him believe he was stupid, trying to make him think Sam didn't really love him.
"She's leaving Friday, for good. She's running out on you too" Bell said as he walked away. Peter didn't need to think about it, if Sam was leaving then he was leaving too. It was as simple as that, what did he need to stay for anyway? Jodie had already moved out, she was about to go on tour, Hartley High might be closing because of low admissions and he just didn't care as much about school, not as much as he cared about Sam. He turned up at Sam's flat, he felt nervous and excited all at the same time but he didn't know what she would do either and he was a little bit scared. He knocked on the door and waited.
"I know you're leaving" Peter said when she opened the door, he walked in without waiting for an invitation. He was determined to talk to her, let her know that he wasn't going to give up.
She told him the same self righteous bull from last time.
"Its a mistake, we are a mistake" Sam said, but he knew she was lying. He'd felt everything yesterday, her love was undeniable and he didn't believe that their feelings were a mistake. He told her he wanted to go with her. She looked at him, her eyes were sad and she bit her lip.
"You can't leave school" Sam said, but her hazel eyes were a dead give away. Peter told her it was his problem and he meant it, he didn't care anymore. He wasn't going to stay there and look at Mr Bell every day, the only thing left for him at Hartley High was Steve. He had more reasons to leave than to stay, he could write or be a mechanic anywhere. He could do both if he wanted to.
She looked into his eyes as they spoke, neither of them could look away and it didn't matter how many times she told him he'd regret it or that she was going to leave alone, it didn't matter. She was worried his future, but it was his future.
"Don't even think about leaving school, Peter. Especially Not unless you wanna guarantee that you are never gonna see me again" Sam said, she opened the door and told him to leave. As he walked away he could hear it, the faint sound of her crying and he knew he had no doubts whatsoever, she was still deeply in love with him.
Peter was packing when Steve walked through the door to the warehouse. He couldn't help but feel disappointed that it wasn't Sam. Even though he'd already started packing, Peter was still unsure of himself. His heart told him that she wanted him, that she loved him just as much as he did and he couldn't help admitting all of that to Steve. If he was honest with himself, he did feel bad about leaving Steve and the warehouse behind. He had such good memories of living there with Steve and Jodie. The best friends he didn't know he wanted, he didn't know he needed even. He felt the need to ask Steve what he should do.
"Go. Man you were a pain in the butt last time, spare us. You go with her" Steve said, he was sad and Peter had to admit he was a little sad too but he knew, Steve was right. He knew he couldn't handle, Sam leaving again. It had been torture before. All those months spent missing her and wishing she was with him.
Peter said his goodbyes to Steve and Allie and took off in his ute knowing exactly where he was going. Peter stopped his Ute and waited until he saw Sam riding her motorbike, she pulled up beside him and took off her helmet.
"So where are we heading?" He asked. Her beautiful smile filled her face and he knew he had made the right decision.
"North" Sam said. He smiled back at her, the trip they had always planned to take was finally here and he slowly walked up to her. They hugged, for what seemed like forever but yet not long enough. Peter held Sam tight and started to kiss her, the sexual tension rising between them. The kiss ended goo quickly, but he didn't mind because he had her back in his arms again, hugging her tightly and he never wanted to let her go. They both pulled apart reluctantly and started their journey north.
