FOREWORD:
In the mainstream DC universe, there's no such army as the Lime Lantern Corps. Either way, this story, and others that might/might not share continuity with them would organize the Lantern Corps based on something called the Plutchik wheel; a chart that classifies emotions. In accordance with that, the Lime Lanterns, in this story, draw power from emotions such as admiration, trust, and acceptance; emotions whose "spoke," on the Plutchick wheel, is of various shades of lime green.
So, without more ado, here's what happens:
This is Occipre. It's a moon that orbits a series of planets that are very close to the heart of the universe. There's something about the scenery of all of this that tends to take most visitors in, emotionally... But then, it often helps if the visitor in question has a soul to speak of... It also helps whenever there's any air to breathe.
On this part of Occipre, it often feels like Venezo, a region of Earth's Italy, in the springtime. It's a land of post-pluvial blooms that cover the entire landscape. It's a land of post-storm, horseshoe-shaped rainbows. It's a land where the dormice sleep without fear of disturbance. It's a land where the coati packs forage. It's a land where the ocelot prowls. It's a land where the cardinaline bird never stops singing or having chicks; this'd include the cardinal, the tanager, the grosbeak, the bunting, and the pyrrhuloxia. It's a land where rabbits, cavies, and fawns lie concealed among the undergrowth. It's a land where a water well is never too far away...or even ran dry.
On farms, flowers are grown. In lakes and some inland seas, characins, cichlids, and other small fish are fished for. On ranches, pheasants, doves, and small ungulates are herded. In coastal orchards, limes are grown...
This is Umar, the planet's main city...although it's more like a police mega-station. It is, in fact, such a mega-station. It's a city of very tall pillars that're made entirely of lime green-colored light/energy. The city has a lunar-port...as well as a hoverport, a marina, and a taxi terminal.
Throughout the city, vireos fly. A vireo is a green songbird. These vireos are the city's unofficial messaging service. These vireos, specifically, are more of a lime green, in color. That's mostly because they serve a comparable calling; and that's hardly just a bird call...
From block to block, small vehicles levitate. Many of the blocks, too, levitate...and are, in fact, cube-shaped. Their doors and windows tend to be small...but not too much so. Not to worry, though; they can, in fact, expand every time someone bigger than expected needs to enter or exit. Ergo, Winnie the Pooh would not repeat his most famous nightmare if he ever came here. (And Idon'tmean getting attacked by a swarm of bees...)
In the ground, there are holes. They're reminiscent of the hobbit holes of Tolkien's Middle-earth; their doors and windows, too, are similarly reminiscent... Hobbits don't live in them, though; local furry aliens do. These beings require such spaces to settle and raise their many pups, cubs, kits, or whatever not. They're not all furry; some of them have feathers, scales, slimy skin, fins, and/or exoskeletons... Some are made of organic metal. Some are made of organic glass. Some, even, are made of organic quartz. Case in point, they all require deep holes and a lot of security and shadow.
In town, there's an embassy. Inside, there are controlled portals to a pocket world called the Destroying. Thunder has been known to rumble each time the portals are opened. People who come from the Destroying often have issues with either falling apart or causing more damage than they're worth. Such are the issues of about half of the embassy's staffers.
Among the hobbit holes on the ground, there are dog runs. Down here, the local alien dogs (or whatever not) take their daily walks...sometimes multiple times a day. They never do this alone; down the runs, they tend to march two-by-two in small packs. They wear masks over their eyes and noses, so they don't get distracted; a pilotage gadget guides them, so that they don't lose their way.
Among these dog packs, there are Chihuahuas. They wear British school uniform outfits... Some of these cute uniforms, in fact, mimic Hogwarts ones from theHarry Pottermovies... Tim Hunter would either be proud or insulted.
This lime-lit planet is the HQ of the Lime Lantern Corps. The Lime Lanterns are universe-policing cops, who're armed with power rings. Their rings draw their power from emotions such as acceptance, trust, and admiration...as well as from smaller amounts of love and submission. In their own special way, they protect and serve the universe's 3600 inhabitable sectors.
The Lime Lantern Corps is full of heavy-hitters. Alas, there are also relative featherweights in this figurative fighting league as well.
This is a citadel. Umar has at least a few. And the keep of each citadel provides more than a view; especially from atop the topmost battlement. This city has never had a Bat-Signal... But then, with luck, it'll never need one. This city already has plentiful security, as things are.
This is a bedroom; or rather, it's a barracks room. It plays host to a queen-size bed...among other amenities. On Earth, one would expect this to be a police chief's chambers... Commissioner Gordon, of Gotham, surely wouldn't mind loafing here... He just...wouldn't want to stay here if he thought that his daughter Barbara would use this as a venue to have a tryst with some alien boy he'd never learn to like...
Across the bed, two juvenile humans lie. One is white, and from Kansas. One is yellow, and from the Chinese part of Montreal. They're two human Lime Lanterns...and hardly the most predictable candidates that Earth has to offer... But then, mostpeople have a hard time predicting who the fallen Lime Lanterns' successors are going to be...if they don't have better things to do...
On either side of the bed, there's a bedside table. Atop each one, a lone power ring lies on its side. Each ring, as one might expect, is jeweled with a sole peridot gem. (It glows when it's being worn.) The object that takes up more room atop each bedside table, though, is a power lantern. These lanterns exist for the purpose of empowering the power rings...and hence, like the rings, also draw power from emotions such as acceptance, trust, and admiration.
Like most barracks, this one has a furnace. It's high-tech. Inside, a small lime-green star burns; it's a nano-fusion. It generates white noise, while doing so; a helpful feature for someone who tries to sleep here.
On either side of the furnace, there's a gadget. They're automated fire guards. Back in the day, fire guards were supposed to keep the barracks grates stoked all night, and hence, also keep the grates from setting the barracks ablaze in the night. Even though most grates on Earth have been replaced by centralized HVAC, the practice...or at least by the US military, anyhow...is still used. Throughout the night, two guards are always posted...and they each keep watch for an hour, before awakening two of their barracks mates, sending them to succeed them, and retiring. In this barracks, though, there's no need to awaken anyone; these two gadgets keep the furnace in check around-the-clock.
As the two Lime Lanterns lie across the bed, it seems this is reminiscent of something; specifically, perhaps, the music video for Justin Bieber's "Love Yourself..."
Into the barracks room, a vireo flies. It lands near Ystin's ear. There, he chirps something into his ear. Soon enough, he flies away.
Ystin rises and stretches. He grapples across the bedside table for his ring. He finds it. He slips it on his right hand (this is his stronger one), and holds it up to the power lantern. As this happens, the lantern generates lime-colored light; so does the ring.
Behind Ystin, the Chinese-Quebecker chick continues to sleep. Strangely, the light doesn't wake her at all... But then, she's wearing a mask over her eyes; its exterior is fern-print patterned...
Soon, Ystin is ready...glowing mask and all. At times, this mask makes him feel like either the Riddler or the Harlequin's Son; vigilantes from his own Earth... He changes and levitates towards the exit...
At the exit, he stops, looks back, and surveys his roommate, as she continues to slumber. She doesn't even flinch. Ystin only scoffs, for some reason, and takes his leave...phasing right through the door as if it wasn't there.
In his absence, the Chinese-Quebecker chick rolls over on her back, and stretches. She doesn't wake...but she moans. She hasn't noticed, it seems, the tiny wallow within the bedding where Ystin was only moments before...
