Chapter 43

Heaven Is Waiting

The tribes graveyard was full with the pack and their families, everyone who knew about the tribes secret. There had been a service earlier in the day for Billy's human friends and Rebecca's sake. She was the only member of the Black family who didn't know the tribe secret and everyone planned to keep it that way. For that reason Jacob wasn't allowed to attend the first service, neither were any of the older pack members who still phased. Not ageing for fourteen years stood out when you were put next to people your same age. As far as Rebecca knew Jacob was unable to make their fathers funeral. She was angry about it and her poor husband was getting hit with most of it.

Rachel, Paul, Emily and a few others who were able to attend the first ceremony went with Billy's human family and friends to the wake. Some of them had to make an appearance. Once the last of them had left the pack filled the empty seats and Sam repeated the service he had given earlier. Fay sat in the front row with her children. The others filled the area around her. Jacob sat in the back row, his eyes locked on the wooden coffin. He was to focused on it to hear Sam's words, he had listen to the first service and his mind tuned out the repeated words. Once the service was over the pack members said their goodbyes to the coffin before leaving the graveyard.

"Clover go with your brother and spend some time at the wake please." Fay said to her daughter.

"Why can't-"

"Please Clo, I don't want to fight with you today. Uncle Sam will give you a lift. Do not run there," Fay hissed. She did not want her daughter phasing so often. The kids were living in their wolf form more then human.

"Fine," Clover sighed going towards the parking lot where her brother, uncle and Fletcher were waiting already. Fay watched them leave before dropping back into her seat, feeling defeated. Once no one else was left Jacob stood up and approached the front row. He sat three seats down from Fay's and the two stared forward at the coffin.

"She looks just like you." Jacob said, breaking the silence.

"Definitely doesn't act like me," Fay mused.

"I've noticed. She seems like a happy kid," Jacob said.

"Always has been, even on bad days she can get people smiling. She is smart but acts a bit to much with her heart. Forgives to easily. It's gonna get her in trouble," Fay said trying to keep her thoughts straight. "Blake told me he went to see you yesterday, I hope he wasn't any trouble."

"It was fine. He's a good kid too. I can't imagine going through everything he's been through," Jacob said.

"He talked to you about the accident?" Fay asked, shocked. Her eyes flicked over to look at Jacob.

"He said it was a spinal injury from jumping off one of the cliffs," Jacob said looking at Fay but turning away after a second of eye contact. Fay felt her stomach drop as the memory came to mind.

"It was there thirteenth birthday. The twins and Fletcher were born the same week so they always celebrated together. They had been begging to go cliff diving, the weather was horrible and I had a bad feeling about it all but I couldn't say no to them. Seth, Quil, and the other pups were there, only Collin and Brady had phased at that point, they were the oldest of the kids. The others hadn't. I was on the beach with Emily setting up for the party. For some reason I looked over to see how the kids were doing and I watched as Blake fell. I knew as soon as he hit the water something wasn't right. Seth and Quil jumped in after him and pulled him back to the beach. He couldn't feel his legs. We got him straight to the hospital but there was no fixing the damage done." Fay hated telling the story, even if it was only the short version it still brought back all the bad feelings attached to the memory.

"He's a strong kid," Jacob wasn't sure what else to say.

"I have done everything in my power to protect them Jacob, but it just wasn't enough," Fay felt herself slipping.

"He's worried about you," Jacob mentioned.

"I know, he worries about everyone else, I love that about him. Jacob I need to tell you something," Fay said in a strange tone making Jacob look back at her. "I was human again, when we returned from our trip my wolf was gone. We put it down to the fact I was pregnant and my wolf didn't want to put the babies at risk. I was human for three years. Then she came back looking for you." Fay could feel her wolf under her skin, wanting out. She needed to get this done with and get away from him.

"Bella?" The sound of her name on his lips made Fay's skin crawl.

"Who else," she hissed as she re lived the memory.

Twelve Years Earlier

Fay knelt in her garden, her hands covered in dirt, mud caked under her nails. The garden had been a good escape for her. Since Paul had left the house felt strange to her. Being outside was nice, relaxing. Even if it was raining it was still nice to be out. She wore a thick coat to protect her from the rain but still felt a constant coldness in her veins. The kids played in the damp grass, fully covered in their rain coats, gloves and boots.

"My ball!" Clover yelled. Clo raced past the garden bed, chasing after the ball Blake had kicked.

"Clo don't go out of sight honey," Fay called to the fast moving child. "Wait and I'll get it," Fay said standing up, she brushed her hands against her jeans. Fay walked around the house where her daughter had run. Fay halted to a stop as she turned the corner. Clover stood within touching distance of a cold one. The cold one before her was none other then Bella Swan. Fay was frozen as her mind tried to work out if it was real. The cold one held the child's ball and slowly passed it back to the small girl.

"Thank you," Clover smiled taking the ball happily. The little girl rubbed at her nose not able to work out what the strange smell was.

"Clover come here now!" Fay shouted snapping out of her frozen state. The girl looked at her mother with fear, not sure what she had done wrong. "Now!" Clo raced to her mothers side. Fay grasped at the little girl pushing her to stand behind her.

"I didn't mean to scare you," The cold one said slowly.

"What are you doing here Isabella?" Fay asked, trying to keep the fear out of her voice. Failing to do so.

"I'm looking for Jacob," Bella said and Fay would have laughed if she wasn't so shaken.

"Well then your looking in the wrong spot, last time I saw him was the night of your wedding. I thought he was with your family." Fay knew she stood no chance, if Bella wanted to kill her she was already as good as dead.

"He hasn't been with us since we left Forks," Bella said.

"Well then I don't know what to tell you," Fay hissed.

"I guess your little imprint thing wasn't as strong as you said it was," Bella said with a glint of amusement in her eyes.

"I moved on, found someone who was actually good for me," Fay said.

"Looks like you moved fast," Bella's eyes flicked past Fay and Fay couldn't help but glance at what caught her attention. Blake's round eyes peeked around the corner.

"Don't look at them!" Fay demanded.

"From one mother to another, enjoy them while they are young, they grow up fast." Bella smiled still watching the small boy.

"So I've heard. How is your little monster?" Fay asked.

"She's well thank you, just like her father," Bella smiled turning back to Fay.

"Well that's good news for her then," Fay said as a hot sweat broke out on her skin.

"I can't tell if you're brave or dumb. Making comments like that while you're just a human," Bella commented.

"You would really kill me in front of my kids, you would kill them as well, suck their blood?" Fay asked.

"You all smell of dog. I do wonder if you would taste the same as wild wolves but I'm not that bad of person." Bella said.

"Then what are you still doing here?" Fay asked.

"I have time," Bella said and Fay scrunched her face in confusion.

"If you have spare time then go see your father, he still asks about you," Fay said catching Bella off guard.

"He thinks I'm dead," Bella said.

"He knows that's not true. He doesn't know what you are but he knows you still exist in some way." Fay explained.

"He can't know," Bella stepped forward and a tremor ran through Fay. Bella stopped after another step giving her a confused look.

"I would leave if I was you Bella," Fay warned as an all to familiar feeling raced through her veins. "Kids go inside!" She stepped forward a smile growing on her face as a familiar sensation ran over her body. The cold finally leaving her veins. She could hear the children's small foot steps racing into the house, she could smell the cold one and feel the wolf waking up. "You shouldn't have come back here Bella," Fay said as another tremor ran through her.

"Bella! Get away from her now!" Edward appeared in front of Bella pushing her back.

You can't save them from their own stupidity Edward.

"We're leaving," Edward said, holding his hands up. He backed towards his wife. Fay's bones began to crack as the shift started. By the time she landed on all fours the pair were gone.

"I didn't know," Jacob said as Fay finished her story.

"Of course you didn't. After that I couldn't get rid of the wolf. I went years without phasing but it was still there, just under the surface. The heat still running through my veins, completely different to the cold I felt as a human."

"Has she returned since?" Jacob asked.

"Several times. We don't speak much, she comes, she sees, she goes. Sometimes she has company. She hasn't been back for three years now, not since the pack moved here and the kids started phasing. She's the reason the kids wolves came fourth."

"You can't just blame it on her-"

"I can't believe it, you're still defending her! After all this time you still pick her side!" Fay's eyes flashed with rage as she jumped to her feet.

"No Fay please," Jacob tried to back peddle.

"I wish you hadn't come back but the reality of it is we need an alpha." Fay was doing everything in her power to hold her wolf back. It scratched at her inners wanting out and her blood boiled trying to hold it in.

"Why?" Jacob asked.

"Their is no pack without an alpha. We can't hear each other's thoughts. The old pack are connected, the kids are connected and I can hear parts of some of their thoughts but nothing fully." Fay took a few steps away from Jacob trying to keep level headed.

"Why can't someone else do it?" He asked standing up.

"We have tried Jacob, the next one inline to try is Clover and she can't be Alpha," Fay growled.

"Why not?" Jacob asked.

"The kids are planing to leave. I caught part of their conversation one day. They want to leave and live in the wild," Fay said.

"Is that not what they are already doing?" Jacob was confused but trying his best to keep up with everything.

"They want to live as wolves. If one of them becomes alpha they could go and there is nothing anyone could say to stop them."

"Why would they want that?" Jacob asked.

"Because they are scared of the cold ones and what could happen if they attack. They are just kids Jacob, scared kids who need help," Fay could hear the fear in her own voice, she was sure Jacob could hear it as well.

"I'm not the person for that," Jacob said his face softening.

"Agreed but I'm out of options Jacob. Please," Fay stared at him with pleading eyes.

"I don't want to be Alpha, Fay," Jacob said looking away from her.

"One of the last times I spoke with Billy he asked me to forgive you."

"Do you?" Jacob asked.

"I'm not sure if I can but I'll promise to try if you can try being Alpha. It may not even work, but we are running out of options. I can't lose my daughter Jacob." Fay stared at him as she waited with baited breath for his answer.

"One month." Jacob whispered.

"What?" Fay asked, not sure she heard him correctly.

"I'll stay for one month, after that I'm leaving. Wether this works or not." Fay let out a relieved breath at his words. She knew he could break them at any moment but she hoped he would stay long enough to fix the pack.
