Chapter 6:
Hokey Slowpokey
Location: Home
"What'zz the deal?! Roto!" Rotom shouted at me after had eaten my breakfast. "Juzzt thizz Monday, you refuzzed to get up. Roto! Now look at you, up ten minutezz before the alarm! Zzt!"
"Can you blame me?" I said. "I'm getting more excited each day! Tomorrow, I start the Island Challenge officially!"
"Fair, Roto. Well come on! We need to get to school!"
Location: Route 1
"Well, someone's excited," Hau said.
"Yep!" I replied. "So, what's on today?"
"Field trip this afternoon!" Hau replied.
"FIELD TRIP?!" I shouted. "I wasn't given any forms of approval to be signed!"
"Relax!" Hau said. "You're required to anyway! It's just to the beach!"
I gave a sigh of relief. "Well that makes sense. Okay. Hau? Rotom? Off to school!"
Location: Hau'oli Middle School
"Okay everyone," said Emily. "As you know, after lunch we are going to do some fieldwork on the beach at Route 1. We have provided you all with sandals, but since they are limited, please use your own if you've brought them. We can also call your parents to bring them over if necessary."
This was exciting. I had only been to the Route 1 beach when seeing Professor Kukui, and now I was going to see many of the Pokémon that reside there! There was excited murmuring amongst the children.
"Maybe we will find a Manaphy or a Keldeo!"
"I wanna look for a Relicanth! They're Pokémon that haven't evolved for millions of years!"
"I hope I don't find a Bruxish. Those things are hideous."
I had already brought my sandals anyway, so I didn't need rentals.
Location: Route 1
"Okay everyone," said Emily. "Your work for today is to document a Water Type Pokémon of your choosing. You are allowed to catch a Pokémon if you want, but do not argue over a species or you will be going straight home. If a Pokémon is already injured, please inform us instead of catching it. To keep you in line, please go in groups of two."
Naturally, I went with Hau. Rotom Dex was allowed to come to.
"I can't wait to see all the Water Typezz! Zzt!" said Rotom Dex. "I juzzt hope I don't short circuit! Roto!"
Me and Hau walked along the beach, hoping to find something. I wasn't even looking for a big find, I just wanted to chronicle the work. I would rather do a lot of work on the first Pokémon I find rather than scout for the rarest one and have little time do it.
"Any ideas?" I asked. I looked around and found a Pokémon on a rock. It was pink and had its tail in the water. "Hey, that's a Slowpoke!"
Slowpoke (ヤドン)
#044
Water/Psychic Type
Dopey Pokémon
3'11" (1.2 m)
79.4 lbs (36 kg)
There are some places where Slowpoke is worshiped because of a long-standing belief that whenever Slowpoke yawns, it rains.
"Interesting," I said, just as Slowpoke started opening its mouth. At that moment, Hau got out an umbrella.
"It's about to rain!" he shouted.
"Cover me! Zzt!" Rotom Dex shouted, getting under the umbrella.
Nothing happened. The sun still shone.
"Well, I'm gonna catch it!" I said. "Pikipek, go!" Out came my Flying Type. "Use Peck!" Pikipek stabbed Slowpoke with its beak. Slowpoke just lounged there, before hitting back with a Tackle. "Now use Echoed Voice!" Pikipek sent out a soundwave that bounced off the walls and onto Slowpoke. Slowpoke then used Yawn.
"Hold on!" Hau said, getting his umbrella open again.
Pikipek yawned. "Not good! Roto!" Rotom said. "In the next turn, Pikipek will doze off!"
"Nope!" I said, recalling Pikipek. "Come out Litten!" It was an interesting pick, a Fire Type against a Water Type. I had it covered though. Slowpoke then used Curse. This lowered its (already very low) Speed in exchange for an Attack and Defense boost. "Now Lick!" Litten went over to Slowpoke and licked it for minimal but still Super Effective damage. Slowpoke was also paralyzed. Slowpoke then used Tackle back, doing a lot to Litten. "Okay, enough is enough! Go Pokéball!" I threw a Ball at Slowpoke. It landed on the sand, shook about…
And stayed shut!
"Well done!" Hau said, hi-fiving me. "You know, I'm starting to think that yawning stuff is just urban legend, right Rotom? Rotom?"
We saw Rotom Dex over by a weak Pokémon in the sand. It was purple and had spiny-blue tentacles coming from its head. "Something izz wrong with it. Roto."
Mareanie (ヒドイデ)
#136
Poison/Water Type
Brutal Star Pokémon
1'04" (0.4 m)
17.6 lbs (8 kg)
It's found crawling on beaches and seafloors. The coral that grows on Corsola's head is as good as a five-star banquet to this Pokémon.
"We need to heal it," Hau said.
"Stop! Zzt!" Rotom said. "Mareanie izz a Poizzon Type! One wrong move could be fatal! We need to go find Emily! Roto!"
Hau nodded. "You're right. Elliott, stay with Mareanie. Make sure nothing else does more harm to it."
"Got it," I said as Hau ran off.
"What could have caused this?" I said. Mareanie was wounded; was it in a battle of some kind? If it was a battle, it certainly was brutal.
"Zzt! I have a theory," Rotom said. "It could be those no gooderzz from yesterday! Roto."
"You're right," I said. "Don't jump to conclusions though." I lay on the sand, which in hindsight wasn't a good idea as now my clothes were now all sandy. "To think people like that exist. Twenty years ago, about a decade before I was born, there were these bad guys in Kanto called Team Rocket. They were stopped by a Trainer named Red but made a comeback three years later in Johto. Do you think they'll come back again? Team Skull reminds me of them from what I've read."
"Hey, another one! Roto!" Rotom said, pointing to another Pokémon stranded on the beach. This was blue with two red orbs and two tentacles.
Tentacool (メノクラゲ)
#129
Water/Poison Type
Jellyfish Pokémon
2'11" (0.9 m)
100.3 lbs (45.5 kg)
They can be found lying dehydrated on beaches, but they are often still alive. When soaked in water, they will revive.
"We don't have to touch this one," I said. "Let's get some seawater on it. Pikipek, come out!" Out came Pikipek again. "Use Echoed Voice on the water!" Pikipek shouted at the water, causing a small wave to wash over Tentacool. It was enough to get it back on track and into the sea again.
"Clever! Roto!"
"Hey! Elliott! Rotom!" It was Hau running with Emily.
"My my, poor thing," Emily said. "Thanks for altering me of this Hau." Emily got out some special gloves, specifically designed to repel poison. She looked Mareanie over and found a small bruise. She used a Potion on it, and Mareanie was healed. It thanked Emily and retreated to the sea.
"Great job!" Hau said. "Is it alright if I do my report on it?"
"Of course!" Emily replied. "What about you Elliott?"
I sent out Slowpoke. "I'm set! Let's get writing!"
I presented my stuff later, and it all went well.
And now, it's onto the Island Challenge!
Rotom's Move Dex!
Zzt! What a day, Roto! We saw quite a few Water Typezz, so let'zz look at a Water Type move. And what better one to look at than Scald!
Scald is a pretty solid move with a power of 80 where the user firezz water. Yeah, doesn't seem like much. But, that'zz where you are WRONG! Because Scald can actually burn an oppozzing Pokémon! Roto! For you see, the water that izz shot izz BOILING! Don't want to get hit with that.
And guezz what? Scald is a TM move! Most Water Type Pokémon can learn it! So, if you want to make matches a bit hotter with your Water Typezz, Scald izz a move to keep in mind!
