Chapter 17: Prehistoric Rascal
The morning sun shone brightly across Oreburgh City as Ethan made his way towards Dr. Fossilia's lab. The streets were already bustling with activity, miners heading to their shifts and shopkeepers setting up for the day. As he walked, a pang of sadness hit him – Conway's absence felt more pronounced than ever.
"Missing your traveling companion already?" Akira's dry mental voice cut through Ethan's melancholy. "And here I thought you'd enjoy a break from the constant note-taking and probability calculations."
Ethan couldn't help but smile. "I suppose I've gotten used to having him around. It's just-"
A soft trilling interrupted his thoughts. Ethan glanced over his shoulder to see Serena poking her head out of his backpack, her eyes bright and curious.
"See? You're not alone," Akira chimed in, his mental tone softening slightly. "Though I must say, your neediness is becoming rather endearing. In a pathetic sort of way."
Ethan chuckled, reaching back to pat Serena's head. "You're right. We're in this together."
As they continued their walk, Ethan took in the sights and sounds of Oreburgh. A group of Machop were helping construction workers lift heavy beams, their muscles bulging with effort. Nearby, a young trainer was brushing her Ponyta, its fiery mane flickering in the morning light. An elderly man sat on a bench, sharing his sandwich with a curious Murkrow.
The diversity of Pokémon and the seamless way they integrated into daily life never ceased to amaze Ethan. It was so different from the world he'd left behind, yet in many ways, it felt more natural, more right.
Finally, they arrived at Dr. Fossilia's lab. He could hear the hum of machinery and excited chatter from within. Ethan pushed open the door to find the lab in a state of controlled chaos. Researchers hurried back and forth, carrying stacks of papers and trays of fossils. In the center of it all stood Dr. Fossilia, her wild hair even more disheveled than usual, gesticulating wildly as she spoke to a group of wide-eyed interns.
Upon seeing Ethan, Dr. Fossilia's face lit up with unbridled enthusiasm. "Ethan! You're here!" she exclaimed, breaking away from the group. "Oh, you won't believe how well the resurrection process went. Come, come!"
She led him through the lab, pointing out various experiments and artifacts along the way. "We've made tremendous progress in fossil restoration techniques," she explained, pausing briefly by a table covered in what looked like ancient plant matter. "Just last week, we successfully revived a prehistoric fern! But that's nothing compared to what we've achieved with your Tyrunt."
They arrived at the resurrection chamber, a large, cylindrical machine that hummed with energy. Next to it was a small, cordoned-off area where a reptilian Pokémon was curiously exploring its surroundings.
"Meet your Tyrunt!" Dr. Fossilia exclaimed, her voice brimming with pride. "He's a healthy male specimen, about as young as we can resurrect them. The process was fascinating – would you like to see the data readouts?"
Before Ethan could respond, she was already pulling up holographic displays, showing complex genetic sequences and energy patterns. "You see, we had to carefully reconstruct the DNA sequence, filling in gaps with compatible modern Pokémon genes. Then, using a process similar to how Pokéballs work, we materialized the physical form."
Ethan listened, fascinated, as Dr. Fossilia delved into the intricacies of the resurrection process. After a few minutes, she seemed to remember why he was there. "But of course, you're here to meet your new partner! Go on, introduce yourself."
Ethan knelt down, meeting the Tyrunt's gaze. The little dinosaur cocked its head, studying Ethan with intelligent eyes. Slowly, Ethan extended his hand. The Tyrunt sniffed it cautiously before giving it a gentle nuzzle.
"Hello there," Ethan said softly. He pulled out his Pokédex, scanning the newest member of his team.
"Tyrunt, the Royal Heir Pokémon," the Pokédex intoned. "Its large jaw has incredible destructive power. Some theories suggest its restored form is but a fraction of its strength from ancient times."
The screen displayed more information: Male, knows Tackle and Tail Whip.
"Fascinating, isn't it?" Dr. Fossilia said, peering over Ethan's shoulder at the Pokédex display. "We've found that resurrected Pokémon often retain instinctual knowledge of moves their species used millions of years ago. It's as if the information is encoded directly into their DNA."
Ethan spent the next hour bonding with Tyrunt, introducing him to Serena and Akira. Serena was immediately fascinated, chirping excitedly and waddling around the much larger Pokémon. Akira, on the other hand, maintained a wary distance.
"I do hope you realize what you've gotten us into," Akira's voice echoed in Ethan's mind. "That jaw looks like it could snap a Steelix in half."
As if on cue, Tyrunt playfully snapped at a nearby chair leg, leaving deep tooth marks in the wood.
"Ah, yes," Dr. Fossilia chuckled nervously. "I should mention, Tyrunt tend to be quite... bitey. It's how they explore their world and assert dominance. In fact, we've been studying their bite force – would you believe it's strong enough to crush a car?"
She led Ethan to a display showing various bite marks on different materials. "We've had to Tyrunt-proof the entire lab. They're incredibly curious and will try to chomp on just about anything."
Ethan watched as Tyrunt continued to explore the lab, his playful nature evident despite his fearsome appearance. A memory surfaced – a beloved movie series from his childhood, featuring young dinosaurs on grand adventures.
"I think I'll call him Chomper," Ethan decided, grinning as the newly-named Chomper attempted to gnaw on Akira's leg, much to the Meditite's mental consternation.
Dr. Fossilia nodded approvingly. "An apt name! Now, before you go, there's something important you should know about raising a Tyrunt." Her tone turned serious. "As a Dragon-type, Chomper will grow incredibly powerful. But with that power comes a challenge – most dragons, as they evolve and grow stronger, will only listen to trainers who command their respect."
She walked Ethan through a series of holographic displays showing various famous Dragon-type trainers and their Pokémon. "Take Cynthia, our very own Sinnoh Champion. Her Garchomp is legendary, but it took years of dedicated training to reach that level of synergy. Or consider Drake of the Hoenn Elite Four, or Lance from Kanto and Johto. They've all mastered the art of earning a dragon's respect."
Dr. Fossilia paused, looking Ethan in the eye. "I'd strongly recommend seeking out a Dragon Master during your journey. Their guidance could be invaluable. Raising a Tyrunt is no small task, but with proper care and training, Chomper could become an incredibly powerful ally."
As if to emphasize her point, a loud crash echoed through the lab. They turned to see Chomper standing amidst the wreckage of a fossil display, looking not at all sorry for his actions.
Dr. Fossilia sighed, a mix of exasperation and fondness in her voice. "And that's why we keep the really valuable specimens in reinforced cases. Good luck, Ethan. You're going to need it."
Ethan left the lab with Chomper safely tucked away in a Great Ball (a parting gift from Dr. Fossilia), his mind buzzing with everything he'd learned. As he reached the city limits, he pulled out his Pokédex.
As Ethan consulted his Pokédex's map feature, he found himself at a crossroads. Two main options presented themselves: backtrack to Route 203 and head to Jubilife City before moving north to Floaroma Town, or take the more direct Route 206 – the infamous "Cycling Road" – straight to Eterna City.
He weighed the pros and cons of each route. The traditional path through Floaroma Town would offer more opportunities for training and catching new Pokémon. The town itself was known for its beautiful flower fields and honey-based treats that Pokémon loved. However, it would also mean a longer journey and potentially crossing paths with Team Galactic at the Valley Windworks.
The thought of encountering Mars, one of Team Galactic's commanders, gave Ethan pause. While part of him was curious to see how the real-life Team Galactic compared to their game counterparts, he couldn't shake the feeling that it might be a dangerous confrontation. His experiences so far had shown him that this world didn't always match up with the games he'd known, especially in terms of the strength and influence of organizations like Team Galactic.
"Prudence would suggest avoiding unnecessary confrontations until we're better prepared," Akira's voice echoed in Ethan's mind. "Besides, I've had quite enough of nefarious organizations for the time being."
Ethan nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "You're right. We should focus on getting stronger before we tackle Team Galactic head-on."
Decision made, Ethan set his sights northward towards Route 206. A closer look at his Pokédex revealed that, unlike in the games, a bike wasn't strictly necessary for the Cycling Road. There was a separate path for pedestrians running parallel to the main bike route.
As he walked towards the city limits, Ethan took advantage of Oreburgh's free Wi-Fi to search for information on Dragon Trainer Masters. He pulled up PokéSearch, the most popular search engine in this world, and began his quest for knowledge.
The first few results were less than helpful. Ads for "Become a Dragon Master in 10 Easy Steps!" and "Top 5 Berries to Make Your Dragon-Type LOVE You!" cluttered the screen. Ethan scrolled past these, looking for more reputable sources.
He found a few promising articles on official Pokémon League websites, detailing the accomplishments of famous Dragon-type trainers. However, they offered little in the way of practical advice for new trainers.
Ethan refined his search, trying various combinations of keywords. "Dragon-type training tips," "raising young dragons," "Tyrunt care guide" – each yielded some useful information, but nothing comprehensive.
Just as he was about to give up, a link caught his eye. It led to a forum called PokéConnect, which seemed to be a popular gathering place for trainers of all levels. Within the forum, a sub-forum titled "Dracarys" stood out. The name tickled something in Ethan's memory, but he pushed the strange coincidence aside for now.
Intrigued, Ethan quickly created an account on PokéConnect and navigated to the Dracarys sub-forum. Here, finally, he found what he was looking for – a community dedicated to the intricacies of raising and training Dragon-type Pokémon.
Excited by his discovery, Ethan composed a post:
"New Trainer Seeking Dragon-Type Advice
Hello, Dracarys community! I'm a new trainer who's recently acquired a Tyrunt. I've been advised to seek guidance from experienced Dragon-type trainers to help with raising and training him properly. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated, especially regarding how to earn a Dragon-type's respect as it grows stronger. I'm currently traveling through Sinnoh, so if anyone knows of Dragon Masters in the region I could potentially meet, that information would be invaluable.
Thanks in advance for any help! I'll be off the grid while traveling but will check back when I can."
Post submitted, Ethan closed his Pokédex and set off towards Route 206. The landscape gradually changed as he left the industrial outskirts of Oreburgh behind. Rocky terrain gave way to gently rolling hills, dotted with clusters of hardy mountain flora.
As he approached the entrance, Ethan was struck by the impressive engineering of Cycling Road. The main bike path stretched out before him, a smooth ribbon of asphalt cutting through the rugged landscape. Above it, supported by sturdy steel beams, ran the Pedestrian's Path – a covered walkway that offered protection from the elements and breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.
Ethan ascended the stairs to the Pedestrian's Path, marveling at the structure. The walkway was wide enough for several people to walk abreast comfortably, with regular benches for resting. Large windows lined both sides, offering unobstructed views of the scenery and the bikers speeding along below.
As he stepped onto the path, Ethan found himself joining a steady stream of fellow travelers. A young couple walked hand in hand, their Nidoran pair scampering playfully at their feet. An elderly man with a Chatot perched on his shoulder nodded a friendly greeting as he passed.
"First time on the Cycling Road?" a cheerful voice asked. Ethan turned to see a girl about his age, a Buneary hopping alongside her.
"Is it that obvious?" Ethan chuckled.
"You've got that wide-eyed look," she grinned. "I'm Mia, by the way. Heading to Eterna City?"
"Yeah, that's the plan," Ethan replied, falling into step beside her. "I'm Ethan. Just started my journey not too long ago."
As they walked, Ethan and Mia fell into easy conversation about their journeys so far. Out of the corner of his eye, Ethan spotted a group of Starly perched on the railing outside, their cheerful chirping barely audible through the glass.
"So, what brings you to Eterna?" Mia asked, her Buneary hopping alongside them.
"The Gym, mainly," Ethan admitted. "You?"
Mia's eyes lit up. "The Contest Hall! I'm hoping to participate in my first Pokémon Contest there. Buneary and I have been practicing our routine for weeks."
They chatted about their respective goals, swapping stories about recent battles and close calls. Mia shared some tips about navigating Eterna Forest, while Ethan talked about his experience in Oreburgh City.
"Oh, before I forget," Mia said as they neared the end of the Pedestrian's Path, "there's this great little café in Eterna, just off the main square. They do amazing Poffins – your Pokémon will love them!"
Ethan thanked her for the recommendation. As they continued walking, Mia pulled out her Pokédex. "Want to exchange contact info? It's always good to have friendly faces to call on during a journey."
They swapped contact information, promising to keep in touch and maybe meet up in Eterna City if their schedules aligned.
After a while, Ethan noticed several sets of stairs leading down from the path at regular intervals. Curious about what lay below, he decided to take a break and explore.
"I think I'm going to check out one of these lower areas," Ethan said to Mia. "Thanks for the company and all the tips!"
"No problem!" Mia replied with a smile. "Enjoy your exploration. Maybe I'll see you in Eterna!" With a final wave and a cheerful "Good luck!" from Mia and her Buneary, they parted ways as Mia continued along the path.
Ethan descended one of the staircases, finding himself in a small, sheltered area perfect for a break. He vaguely remembered there being a cave system beneath the Cycling Road and made a mental note to explore it further later.
For now, though, lunch seemed like a good idea. Ethan released his Pokémon, setting out food for each of them. As they ate, he couldn't help but smile at the sight of his growing team. Serena was daintily nibbling on her food, while Akira ate with practiced efficiency. Chomper, on the other hand, was enthusiastically devouring everything in sight, including a nearby shrub.
A rustling in the nearby bushes caught their attention. A curious Bidoof poked its head out, eyeing their food hopefully. Ethan chuckled, tossing it a few berries, which it accepted gratefully before scurrying back into the underbrush.
"Making friends with the locals?" a passing hiker called out, his Geodude rolling alongside him. "Just be careful not to overfeed them. The Bidoof around here can get a bit cheeky if they think you're an easy mark for snacks!"
Ethan nodded, appreciating the advice. As he turned back to his own meal, he couldn't help but feel a sense of belonging. This world, with its diverse people and Pokémon, was beginning to feel more like home with each passing day.
"You're staring again," Akira's voice echoed in Ethan's mind. "I realize we're a fascinating bunch, but do try to eat your own food before Chomper decides your sandwich looks appetizing."
Ethan chuckled, taking a bite of his lunch. "Sorry, I just... sometimes I still can't believe this is real. That I'm here, on this journey, with all of you."
There was a moment of silence before Akira responded, his mental voice uncharacteristically gentle. "What drives you, Ethan? Beyond the obvious goal of becoming a strong trainer, what is it you're seeking on this journey?"
The question caught Ethan off guard. He pondered it as he watched Chomper playfully chase a butterfly, nearly knocking over Serena in the process. "I suppose... I'm trying to find my place in this world," he said aloud. "To understand why I'm here, and what I can do to make a difference."
"A noble goal," Akira replied. "Though I do hope it doesn't involve too many brushes with danger."
Ethan shook his head, a wistful smile playing on his lips. "Definitely not. In my old life, I always avoided conflict when I could. Being the older sibling with a pretty energetic younger brother and younger sister, I had to learn to let things go, to be the peacekeeper."
His eyes took on a distant look as he continued, "It wasn't always easy. My dad left when I was 12, and suddenly I had to be the 'man of the house.' Watching my mom deal with the betrayal and depression that followed... it forced me to grow up fast."
Akira remained silent, his mental presence a comforting backdrop to Ethan's reminiscence.
"I had to keep things together, you know? Make sure the kids got to school, that there was food on the table. It didn't leave much room for seeking out adventures or taking risks."
As Ethan spoke, Serena waddled over, sensing the shift in his mood. She gently nuzzled against his leg, letting out a soft, comforting trill. Ethan smiled, reaching down to pat her shell appreciatively.
"I see," Akira responded thoughtfully. "And in your old world, did you ever—"
But before Akira could finish his question, a commotion caught their attention. Chomper had wandered off while they were talking and was now gleefully gnawing on what appeared to be an old, rusty bell half-buried in the ground.
"Chomper, no!" Ethan called out, rushing towards the mischievous Tyrunt. But it was too late.
A deep, resonant tone echoed through the area as Chomper's teeth scraped against the metal. The ground began to tremble, and a massive shape rose from the earth behind Chomper.
Ethan froze as he found himself face to face with an enraged Bronzong. The ancient Pokémon's eyes glowed with fury, its body vibrating with barely contained power.
As Ethan's mind raced for a solution, the Bronzong let out a deafening Screech, the sound waves visibly distorting the air around them. Chomper cowered behind Ethan's legs, while Serena and Akira rushed to flank their trainer, ready for battle.
Trapped between the sheer cliff face of the Cycling Road's support structure and the furious Bronzong, Ethan realized they had nowhere to run.
A/N: Thanks so much for the reading and reviewing! I appreciate everyone's feedback.
Jerax: As far as gym leader strength, in this world I think of them as accomplished trainers capable of holding their own against the elite (eg. Cynthia, elite four), and they train multiple Pokémon and modify their strength based on their challenger. They likely all have a core/main team for emergencies. As you'd expect, gym leaders are pillars/protectors of their city ready to jump in during a moment of crisis.
As requested, I will start to include stats on Ethan's team, especially as he learns more about them with time (eg. abilities, natures, etc.).
1. Serena (Togepi), starter
Moves: Growl, Headbutt, Charm, Metronome, Protect, Ancient Power
2. Akira (Meditite)
Moves: Confusion, Force Palm, Detect, Calm Mind, Acupressure, Zen headbutt, High Jump Kick, Thunderpunch
3. Chomper (Tyrunt)
Moves: Tackle, Tail Whip
