At the castle, Hunter was in his room working on something special for Varian. Since they started going out, Hunter wanted to give Varian a special gift to show how much he loved him and because Varian wrote to him that it was his birthday. Hunter was trying to sew together a special patch on a small bandana, but his stitching was horrible. There was even a bandage and staples on it trying to hold the patch on. Flapjack was perched on his shoulder giving him a weird look at what he was making. "I know. I have no idea what I'm doing." Hunter said to Flapjack.

There was a knock at the door, Hunter told Flapjack to hide then he went to open the door. When he opened the door, he was shocked to see his uncle in his scout uniform, he didn't look too good. He was about to pass out, but Hunter caught him and led him to the bed. His uncle had pulled another night shift working for Belos, which worried Hunter. His uncle had been working day and night on the portal and small jobs that the emperor assigned him. Sometimes his uncle would skip meals or avoid sleeping and that made Hunter worry. He knew his uncle was enduring all this just to keep him safe, but Belos mostly enjoyed seeing him suffer.

The door flung open again but this time, it was two guards; one of them threw a letter at Hunter's face then slammed the door shut. Hunter grumbled before opening the letter, it was from Belos ordering his uncle to lead the coven heads for the day since his duties were keeping him busy. Hunter looked over at his uncle heartbroken, he already had enough on his plate and Belos was making things worse. So, he decided that he would lead the coven heads for the day. He made sure that he wore his golden guard uniform then tucked his uncle into bed. He whispered to his uncle that he would take care of his duties for the day.

Before leaving he grabbed the bandana and hid it then walked towards the throne room. However, he saw almost all the coven heads leaving the throne room instead of staying for the meeting. Hunter tried to get them to come back but they all refused to listen. He marched into the throne room to find Eberwolf and Darius looking through scrolls. Hunter demanded Darius tell him why the coven heads were leaving when they were scheduled to have a meeting. Darius groaned with annoyance then he turned towards Hunter. He told Hunter that all the coven heads agreed to reschedule the meeting.

"You can just go play arts and crafts or whatever it is you do," Darius stated with a smirk.

He then spotted the bandana Hunter hid and snatched it from him with his abomination hair. Darius chuckled at Hunter's poor attempt to sew and that made Hunter mad. He tried to get the bandana back, but Darius gave Hunter a smirk and decided to keep it. "Just give it back Darius. It's a gift for..."

"Your new boyfriend?" Darius asked.

Hunter's face went pale "The cat delivering your letters was a giveaway. But this..."

"It's a work in progress. And it's a raccoon, not a cat."

Darius didn't listen and just walked away with Eberwolf, muttering about how falling in love was just a waste of time. Hunter wasn't sure what Darius's problem was, but he knew he had to come up with another gift for Varian. Then he remembered Varian told him that Hexside was having a club fair, he figured that there might be something he could find for Varian. However, he didn't want to just abandon his uncle and have him suffer. But he figured that it would just be a quick look, he'll be in and out without anyone knowing.

At Hexside, everyone had been preparing for the club fair. Luz and Amity were trying to get more people to join the Azura book club. Willow decided to start Hexside's first Flyer Derby team and be the team captain just like her dads. Gus offered to help Willow at her booth to get people to sign up. Varian wanted to look around the clubs to see what might interest him besides his alchemy. He started taking up drawing in his journal about all the adventures he was having in the Demon Realm.

He was walking past a few club booths when he bumped into someone. He looked up to see that it was Hunter in a Hexside uniform for the potion track and Flapjack sitting on his shoulder. Hunter helped him up; he also noticed that Varian had dropped something, and he picked it up. Varian was flustered when he saw what Hunter had picked up, his journal with all his sketches. Hunter opened the journal and he saw most of Varian's sketches, he thought they were good then he saw a sketch of himself in Varian's journal. Varian looked so embarrassed, but Hunter told him that he liked it and that he was really talented.

Hunter handed Varian back his journal "I thought you were busy with your Golden Guard duties." Varian spoke.

"Belos had other things to deal with, so I decided to come and check out the club fair," Hunter explained.

They started walking around but Hunter accidentally stepped on Viney's pet Griffin, Puddles which made him mad. Viney tried to hold Puddles back, but it started chasing after Hunter as he took off on his staff. Varian apologized to Viney for the trouble and then chased after Hunter. Puddles tried to bite him, but it took one of Hunter's boots, exposing one of his red cardinal socks. Hunter zoomed around and then charged at the griffin, grabbing the boot from its mouth. He put his boot back on, but he got grabbed by vines and was pulled towards the ground in front of Willow.

He thought Willow was going to hurt him but then she asked him if he wanted to join her Flyer Derby team. She and Gus recognized who Hunter was as the guy who saved Varian from Eclipse Lake, but they didn't know his name. So, Hunter gave them a fake name, Caleb Jasper Bloodwilliams. Varian caught up to Hunter who was talking to Willow and Gus. He told Willow that Hunter was here for the club fair and was interested in joining a club. Willow suggested that he could join the Flyer Derby team after she and Gus saw his amazing flying. Hunter decided to give Filter Derby a try and he even asked Varian to join.

"I don't know. I'm not a sports kind of person." Varian stated.

"Please. It's been a rough year for Willow. She's really looking forward to making this team a thing." Gus begged.

That convinced Varian to join the team plus it would be a nice way to spend some time with Hunter. A few moments later, Willow had Hunter perform a few tricks to get the students excited and they managed to get a team together. At first, Hunter thought that the team was pathetic but Willow proved him wrong, she dragged him to the field and all of them showed off their skills. Gus was the speed demon of the team due to his unique way of flying, Skara was the team's strategic wizard, and Viney was the best healer in the school. And like Willow, they were all misjudged and Hunter took back his comment on them being pathetic.

Willow gave each of them green Flyer Derby uniforms and green paint for their face paint. Varian used the paint to draw a sun symbol on his cheek. He looked at Hunter's face paint which was a jagged scar like Flapjacks. "Not a bad look. But why a sun?" Hunter asked.

"Oh, it's the symbol of Corona, my home. I thought it would be nice to honor my home." Varian explained.

Hunter took the chance to ask Willow about why this team was so important to her. She explained that her whole life she was called half-a-witch Willow because she wasn't good with magic and it made her a target for bullies, both students and teachers. She used to be on the abomination track with Professor Hermonculus but she switched to the plant track. And now, Hermonculus believed that she wasn't fit to be captain of the team unless she beat his Flyer Derby team in a match to get the team approved. Hunter actually understood what it was like to a half a witch since he was one too.

So, he told Willow that they were going to prove the professor wrong. The time came for the big game, Hermonculus's team was on the right of the field wearing purple and Willow's team was on the left wearing all green including face paint. Viney saw her friend Jerbo on the other team, and she looked livid seeing him. The whistle blew then the game began, each team member splitting up to grab their opponent's flag. Hunter grabbed the first flag for his team and then handed it to Gus who placed it on their goal. Skara got blasted by Hermonculus's team which gave them a point.

Varian was their backup flyer on the team and after Skara got blasted out of the game, Varian joined in. Viney and Jerbo both crashed into each other trying to grab the flag. Hunter snagged a flag off Hermonculus then Willow used her vines to grab the last two. But Hermonculus used his powers to knock Willow off her Palisman. "Oops. My hand slipped." He stated, innocently.

All of Willow's teammates glared at the professor; he did it on purpose to get Willow to lose the match. Willow managed to hand Hunter the other flags before creating a flower for her to land on. Gus gave Hunter a push to the goal then he put the rest of the flags on their goal and Willow's team won. When Hunter landed, Viney grabbed a barrel of apple blood and dumped it on Hunter as a way of celebrating their victory. "May I please have your team's name?" Hermonculus asked in defeat.

"Shoot. We never thought of a name." Willow said.

"The Emerald Entrails." Hunter blurted out, "You know, because we're green, and there's more to us than you think."

The team agreed with the name even Willow snapped a picture with her scroll for their team photo. Hunter confessed that today was amazing, and he was glad that he made a few new friends. Willow surprised him by calling him Hunter, both Varian and Hunter looked embarrassed. She and Gus saw the live stream from the Coven Day dance and Luz kind of told them about Hunter being the Golden Guard but also Varian's secret boyfriend. "Don't worry, we won't expose you. You seem like a nice guy and Varian really likes you. But if you break his heart, I'll break your legs." Willow stated.

Hunter promised not to break Varian's heart mostly because Willow kind of scared him. Varian left to get something to drink. Hunter asked Gus and Willow if they knew that it was Varian's birthday; Luz had told them, and they were even planning a surprise party for Varian at the Owl House. All of them had gifts for Varian and that made Hunter feel a little ashamed about his gift for Varian. Suddenly they all heard Varian scream; Hunter panicked and ran towards where Varian was. What he saw shocked him, some scouts from the emperor's coven showed up and kidnapped Varian.

Willow and the others saw Varian get kidnapped; they thought Hunter was the reason why Varian was kidnapped. Hunter swore that he had nothing to do with this. But he had a hunch about who was behind all this. He asked Willow and the rest of the Emerald Entrails to help him free Varian. They all agreed to help him, Hunter took them to one of the precincts that he knew. That was when he saw a ship above the precinct that was piloted by none other than Darius. A scout handed Sapphire over to Darius in a cage then he took off with Varian on the ship. Hunter and the others got on their palismen and flew after the ship.

Darius was mostly scrolling on Penstagram while an abomination piloted the ship. When he saw Alador's account he muted him and then muttered the word hack. Varian tried to reach out for his palismen but Darius would stop him. "What is your problem?! I haven't done anything wrong!" Varian shouted.

"I will not have Hunter's heart broken by someone like you," Darius spoke in anger.

Varian remembered Bump had told him that Darius and Alador were a couple until something came between them and Alador broke Darius's heart and married Odalia. He guessed that Darius must have found out about Hunter and his relationship. "This is because of Alador Blight, isn't it?" Varian questioned, "Principal Bump told me that you two were a couple."

Darius was about to speak when Hunter showed up and punched Darius right in the face. He freed Sapphire from her cage and he and Varian tried to get away when Darius grabbed Varian by the foot. Hunter pulled Darius's hand off of Varian and then stepped in front of him protecting him. "Out of my way, Little Prince," Darius spoke, menacingly.

"That's enough Darius! Varian is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I'm sorry that your love life was bad, but Varian is not like Alador Blight. Varian is kind, honest, and smart, and he makes me feel like I can be myself. I won't let anyone, not even Belos, hurt him." Hunter bravely spoke.

Varian blushed at Hunter's speech; he felt a warmth in his heart seeing Hunter so protective of him. Hunter and Varian grabbed each other, ready for Darius's attack. But instead, Darius smiled at them and landed the ship, right near the Owl House. Hunter and Varian looked so confused and so did their friends who had followed them. Darius explained that all this was just a test to see how serious Hunter was about Varian. He gave them scrolls so that they could communicate through Penstagram instead of sneaking letters to each other. Darius even handed Varian the bandana that Hunter had made but he fixed the stitching.

"And I thought Luz was a romantic." Varian commented, "Did you make this?"

"I did. I know it's not anything fancy, but I wanted to give you something special. And I think Darius fixed my sloppy stitching, I'm not that good at sewing." Hunter rambled.

Varian hugged Hunter tight and told him that this was the best gift he had gotten. All of them went inside the Owl House but the place was dark. Suddenly, the lights turned on, then Eda, Luz, Amity, and Hooty yelled out surprise. King even popped out of the cake to yell surprise. Varian had tears of happiness streaming down his face, Hunter thought he was sad and tried to comfort him. Varian told him that those were tears of joy, this was the first time he celebrated his birthday with friends and not just his dad.
