Darkness on the Edge of Town
"I happened to have trained myself to hold my breath for six minutes when underwater."
Within the depths of the river near the Brooklyn Bridge, Donnie swam his way up to the surface with a pair of goggles on.
"I say this because my brothers haven't yet bothered to do the same."
Donnie finally reached the surface, near a downed hand glider, taking a huge gulp of air before spitting some water out.
He made his way onto the docks and rolled over to the shadows. Donnie then zoomed his goggles, which could see in night vision, towards a contraption that looked a lot like a cannon on top of scaffolding, which fired some kind of blue laser into the river.
"That thing, which Donnie calls a vibro cannon, is messing up the East River. And if it keeps going on like this, then all of the South Street Seaport will fall apart and sink into the river."
Donnie noticed that the ground beneath the cannon started cracking.
"Usually, Donnie would be going into geek mode, wondering how the technology works, but he does have the worst timing, if you ask me."
He noticed some shadows form, making him look up at the roof of the building he's next to, seeing two ninjas that were dressed as the ones that he and his brothers fought in that alley several weeks ago.
The two then jumped to fight Donnie, the two wielding katanas.
It was an average night in New York, and with there being no criminal activity or scientific technology going haywire, Alex and the Turtles decided to have some fun.
In a circular tunnel in the sewers, Mikey was riding his trusty skateboard at top speed.
"He is the alpha dog, the thrash meister, the undisputed god of the half pipe." He said like a commentator at a sporting event before flipping through the air, whooping.
Following him was Raph, who didn't ride on a skateboard, instead, he wore rollerblades.
"Who needs half pipe, bro?" He asked with a grin on his face. "We got full pipe!"
He then laughed as he managed to ride along the tunnel in a full circle, cheering "Whoo-hoo! Yeah!"
The pair made it out of the circular tunnel and made a sharp right into the lair.
Coming up behind them from another tunnel were Alex, Leo and Donnie. Alex wore rollerskates, Leo rode a kick scooter and Donnie rode a BMX bike.
Donnie gained speed and entered the lair ahead of Alex and Leo.
"Going for amplitude!" Donnie declared as he rode up a ramp that sent him airborne, spinning slightly before landing near his lab.
Leo then rode up the ramp, getting airborne and spun twice before skidding on Donnie's research table and then he touched the ground.
"Going for grinditude! Whoo!" He then cheered.
And finally, Alex went airborne with the ramp and rolled and flipped in the air before landing on one foot and spun on the spot.
"Going for spinitude!" He cheered before rolling around the lair with his brothers, all of them cheering in unison.
As they have fun, Splinter leaves the kitchen with a tray with tea and a couple of muffins.
He walked towards the couch and the TVs as Leo scootered past him, saying "Excuse me, Sensei."
He soon placed the tray on the coffee table.
"Heads up, Sensei! I mean down!" Donnie cried out before jumping over him, Splinter having ducked.
Then Splinter poured some tea into his cup before noticing that Raph was blading towards him, so he jumped to avoid being hit.
"Nice recovery, Sensei." Raph noted as he sped down a ramp to the central floor of the lair around the river hole.
Splinter sighed, reaching for a muffin, which Mikey snagged as he sped past.
"Hey, thanks, Sensei!" Mikey called as he continued on his skateboard.
"Step aside, Sensei!" Alex called out and Splinter did as requested as Alex zoomed past him on one foot.
"Extreme green and mean!" All five brothers shouted together.
Splinter sighed at their fun as he sat in the armchair and pressed a button on the remote to watch his favourite show.
But instead of changing channels, all the TVs, and even the lights and other electronics, shut off, leaving the lair in pitch darkness, causing the five brothers to crash into each other.
"Nice wiring job, Don!" Mikey said with sarcasm.
"I guarantee it's not my wiring. Maybe it's a blackout." Donnie defended himself.
"Well, that's just great. Now, whoever's on top of me, can you get off?" Alex groaned from the weight of a human sized turtle laid on top of him, feeling whoever it was getting off of him.
"Sorry." Leo apologised.
Soon, Splinter sparked a match and lit a candle that gave some light in the lair and saw that most of his sons were on the floor in front of him, while Donnie was bent over a ramp.
"Ugh, keep that thing away from Mikey." Leo gasped as he and Alex sat up.
"Yeah, he stuffed down a whole chilli pizza for dinner, which was concerning, if you ask me." Alex said.
"Clearly there is a power failure." Splinter deduced as his sons got to their feet. "I suggest you investigate and see if it can be fixed."
"We're all over it." Mikey assured him as he kicked his board up and grabbed it before heading for the exit.
Both Alex and Raph pushed the wheels of their rollerblades and skates, making them look like they're wearing shoes.
Leo folded his scooter and attached it to his belt.
And Donnie folded his bike and carried it on his back.
All four followed after Mikey.
"And hurry up! I do not wish to miss my favourite program." Splinter ushered them on.
Soon, the five made their way up to the streets and stood on top of a water tower on a roof, seeing that a large part of the city had no lights on. They could barely see because of the moonlight.
"You know, I don't think Splinter meant we should investigate this far." Leo expressed a slight concern.
"You can never be too thorough, especially when it comes to topside time." Raph pointed out.
"This whole side of town is dark. A substation must've gone out." Donnie theorised.
"Hold on, there should be emergency lights on. Yet they're not." Alex realised, sensing that there must be something going on.
"Yeah. It's totally dark down there." Raph agreed.
"Which means there's only one thing for us to do." Mikey smirked as an idea came to him.
That idea being riding around with their sports gear in front of a museum.
"Banzai!" Raph and Mikey cheered as they grinded down a rail and then jumped to another.
As they cheered upon landing on the ground, Leo came to a halt.
"Guys, you really think we should be doing this?" Leo asked as Alex came to a halt next to him and Mikey as well, who kicked his board to his hand.
"Yeah, what if someone sees you guys?" Alex agreed with him as Raph stopped next to him, he didn't want anyone to flip out upon seeing his brothers.
"That's the beauty of it, Alex. No one can see us. It's pitch black." Raph pointed out.
"Get with the program, you two. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to session some surface terrain.
Suddenly, Donnie skidded to a stop next to them, looking shocked and worried.
"Hey, check this out." He whispered, pointing towards the museum roof.
They looked up to see a couple of familiar looking ninja scale up the side of the building to the museum rooftop with a rope. The five all hid behind a bush.
"Didn't we fight these clowns once before?" Mikey asked, recollecting that battle from several weeks ago.
"Yeah. And we nearly got waxed." Donnie cringed.
"They must be the reason for the blackout. They're trying to steal something." Alex frowned.
"Who's up for some payback?" Raph asked as he stood and twirled his sais.
The two ninjas entered the museum through the skylight, finding themselves in the Japanese exhibit, full of various artefacts, including a rather unique looking sword with three blade guards that pointed up and the handle was made with gold and silver, a rather odd looking face on the pommel
They approached the display case that housed the sword and one of them cut a circular hole in the glass while the other put on a metal gauntlet with his left hand.
Just as he reached to grab the sword, a shuriken shot past his head and got lodged in the wooden frame. He looked to see Alex and the Turtles facing him and his comrade.
"Gift shop's on the first floor, boys!" Leo smirked. "But they don't take kindly to shoplifters. And neither do we."
The other ninja pulled out his katana while the one with the gauntlet reached for the sword again, being stopped by another shuriken that was lodged in the wooden frame.
"Now, before you try to make off with the goods, you might want to consider a few things." Raph suggested. "One, you're outnumbered. Two, don't let the pretty faces fool you. We're tougher than we look."
Suddenly, more ninjas popped out, surrounding the five.
"And three, we're about to get our butts seriously hammered." Mikey gulped.
The first move came from a ninja with a bo staff, twirling it and then charging at Leo, who pulled out his katanas and charged at the ninja.
The ninja swung his staff towards Leo's head, but he ducked and then sliced the staff.
Initially surprised, the ninja then had a blade pop out from each of the two halves, surprising Leo.
When the ninja was about to swipe at him, Leo turned around and the blade struck his shell, snapping off. Leo smirked before tackling him, launching the ninja into another, knocking them out.
"Whew. Saved by the shell." Leo sighed with relief.
Raph ended up spinning on the spot on his rollerblades.
"Check it out. Blades and blades." He said as he stopped spinning and skated towards five ninjas.
One of them charged at him and tried slicing him with a katana, but Raph flipped over him with a cackle, at the same time, the ninja sliced an antique vase.
Raph skidded to a stop when he landed and faced the ninja.
"You break it, pal, you bought it." He told him off before skating away, the ninja chasing after him.
"And speaking of buying it." Raph grinned before spin kicking the ninja in the chest, sending him right into a gong.
Alex rollerskates around a group of four ninjas, ducking, jumping and swerving their attacks in a circle and eventually sliced their weapons into pieces before curling up and grabbing one of their legs and knocking the rest down with that ninja.
"Much better than a skating rink." Alex grinned as he twirled his katana.
Donnie faced off against a ninja wielding a spear. He unfolded his bike out and sped off from the ninja, who spun his spear and was about to thrust it at Donnie, but the purple clad turtle lifted the bike forward, hitting the ninja.
"Alley oop!" He exclaimed as the ninja crashed into a set of samurai armour, knocked out instantly.
Donnie then turned his bike, seeing another ninja charging at him with a pair of sais, so he pulled out his bo staff and held it out like he was jousting.
"Charge!" He declared before charging at him, hitting him right in the chest, knocking him against a drawer and smashing another antique vase.
"Whoo-hoo!" Mikey cheered as he was on his skateboard, heading right for a trio of ninjas. "Bowling for ninjas!"
He knocked into one of them, making them crash into the other two, falling like bowling pins.
Mikey then grinned as he spun his nunchucks, but then a chain spun around and wrapped around his left wrist, making him drop the nunchuck.
"Uh-oh." He muttered as the ninja pulled the chain so that he could strike Mikey with his kama.
"Heads up!" He warned as he jumped off his skateboard, which hit the ninja in the stomach, knocking him down.
"Way to pick up that spare." Mikey commented before ripping off the foot symbol on the ninja's chest. "And a trophy to boot."
"A little help here?" Leo asked as he was in the middle of fighting four ninjas all at once.
"We're on it." His brothers all said in unison as they came to his aid with their sports gear.
Leo kept up with the fight, barely able to keep going and defending himself.
"Look out!" His brothers cried out as the four ninjas all jumped out of the way, causing them to crash into each other, groaning in pain.
"I sense a teamwork training session in our future." Mikey noted.
"That's the understatement of the week." Alex agreed with him.
"Double time. They're getting away!" Leo informed them, seeing that almost every ninja fled by climbing up rope to the skylight.
The only one that remained was the one with the gauntlet, who pulled the sword out of the display case and tried to join the others, but Alex and the Turtles stopped in front of him.
"Put down what isn't yours to begin with, Sparky, and run off with your tail between your legs." Alex warned the ninja, pointing his katana at him as Raph twirled his sais as well.
The ninja backed up a few feet before he held up the sword, which started glowing brightly with sparks of energy emitting from it. He then aimed it at the five, shooting out shockwaves that sent them flying and crashed into a wall.
The ninja then escaped by climbing up the rope to the skylight.
"How about best two out of three?" Mikey suggested sarcastically as he rubbed his plastron and as Leo and Alex put their katanas in their scabbards.
"What was that sword?" Donnie asked as police sirens filled the air.
"Let's figure that out when we're away from here." Alex said as Raph helped Donnie up.
The five then made their way out of the museum.
They made it back to the lair and showed Splinter the symbol that Mikey took from the fight.
"What does the symbol mean, Master Splinter?" Leo asked.
"Trouble." Splinter replied with unease. Alex noticed a look in Splinter's face, especially in his eyes, that suggested that he knows who these ninjas are. That he has a history with them.
"You know something about these ninjas? Where do they come from? Who do they work for?" Raph asked as Splinter started walking to his room.
"And what do they want with a magic sword?" Mikey added.
"Nope. Not magic. Probably more like a self perpetuating oscillation frequency generator." Donnie explained, shrugging off the idea of magic, being the fact and scientific based turtle.
"Uh, in English, Einstein." Mikey asked.
"He's saying that it packs a shockwave that knocks you flat on your shell." Alex translated what Donnie said, since he'd learned from Donnie, having had a natural curiosity for science and technology.
"We got to go after those creeps." Raph said, pulling his sais out of his belt.
"No." Splinter sternly shot the idea down, surprising his sons. "A wise ninja does not seek out an enemy he does not fully understand."
"But, Sensei, Bushido demands that we fight for honour and justice and -"
"Bushido also demands that you honour your master's wishes!" Splinter cut Leo off with finality in his voice. "I will meditate upon this matter further. Goodnight." He then entered his room and the door closed.
"Undergrounded again." Mikey moped as Donnie was in thought until something came upon his mind.
"Hey." He said, clicking his fingers before running towards his research table with the computer.
"Where are you going, brainiac?" Raph asked before he and his brothers ran after him, catching up as he sat on a stool and typed on the computer.
"There's more than one way to seek out your enemy." Donnie commented.
Up top, within the skyscraper with the foot symbol, the man who sliced the projector screen when seeing evidence of Alex and the Turtles walked into the large chamber at the top of the building with four ninjas standing, like they were waiting for him.
When the doors closed, the man removed his top and the four ninjas knelt before him. He then placed his open hands together.
One of the four pulled out his katana and leapt at the man, swinging his weapon down, only to get kicked in the face, launching him back.
Another spun their chain attached to a kama and then threw it at him, but he rolled away in time before flipping, just as the other two swung their katanas to strike him.
When he landed, he kicked a ninja coming in from behind him in the stomach, also flipping so that he could throw him at a charging ninja.
When on his feet, he noticed that Hun entered with something in his arms, covered by a large cloth.
"Ah, Hun. One moment." The man told him, hand out to make him stop.
All four ninjas charged at him, who he kicked in the face, punched in the chest, kicked near the neck, grabbing his katana, blocked a thrust from the last ninja before disarming him and then kicked him in the side.
In the end, all of them were on the floor, groaning and moaning in pain while the man put his top back on.
"I trust you bring good news." He said to Hun as he walked up to him. The large man knelt before him and the man removed the cloth, seeing the sword that his ninjas stole earlier in the museum, resting on top of a pillow.
"The Sword of Tengu." The man said with a grin as he held the sword with a longing. "Still just as potent after all these years."
He then placed the sword in front of a display case of glass that contained a suit of armour, which was hidden in shadow. The sword's blade glowed in close proximity to the armour.
"And still able to locate other artefacts that share its unique origin." He said, his grin growing wider. "Yes. This sword will help me track those that I have been hunting for all these years. Bring it to tech division." He placed the sword back on the pillow. "Tell them, proceed with phase two."
It was the following night and all the brothers were busy doing their own thing.
Mikey was currently on the couch, eating potato chips and reading some comics, Alex was currently rereading The Hobbit on the armchair, Leo was busy performing some kata, Raph was beating on his practice dummy and Donnie was still working on the computer, now at his set up full of various computers.
All the while, Splinter was still in his room, the thought of it making Mikey glance at the glass door of Splinter's room.
"What's up with the big cheese?" He asked. "He's been zoning in there all day."
"It's that ninja symbol. It's got Sensei all weirded out." Leo replied.
"If you ask me, he knows who they are and is holding back from us." Alex expressed his suspicions as he finished the chapter he was at, placing a bookmark.
"Enough of this waiting around. I say we hit topside, kick ninja butt, take ninja names and find out the whole ninja story for ourselves." Raph growled, kicking and punching the dummy more until he roared and kicked the head clean off, being launched across the lair until it landed in the bag of potato chips Mikey was eating.
"Whoa. Remind me never to get on your bad side, dude." Mikey said with trepidation while Raph walked towards the lair exit, Leo following after him.
"Too late." Raph smirked, being stopped by Leo, who flipped and landed in front of him.
"Hang on, Raph. No one's going anywhere." He told Raph, folding his arms.
"Guys, check this out!" Donnie called out to everyone, who all gathered around him. "I hacked into the power company's computer system. Looks like there's another blackout down by the South Street Seaport."
"I smell a rat, and I don't mean Splinter." Raph said.
"Two blackouts back to back? Something is definitely going down." Alex added before he and Raph headed for the exit, Donnie and Mikey decided they'll join them.
"Hold up, guys. Splinter told us -"
"Not to go after the ninjas. He didn't say anything about not investigating power failures." Raph pointed out as Donnie carried his duffle bag.
"Exactly, Leo. How you word instructions is very important to remember." Alex agreed as he and Raph continued on.
"Excellent. I have a few new surveillance toys I want to test." Donnie said with eagerness as he and Mikey followed.
"Uh, wait up!" Leo called out as he ran to catch up with them. "It's tough being the leader."
Unbeknownst to all of them, Splinter watched them leave from behind a pillar.
The five made their way to the top of the Brooklyn Bridge, looking to see that the area Donnie talked about was in fact in pitch darkness.
"Total blackout. Just like last night." Raph noted as Donnie rummaged through his bag.
"But this time I came prepared." He said, pulling out a pair of goggles, which Alex took and put on, seeing everything in a green filter and brightened up like it was the middle of the day.
"Nice. I was wondering when you'd make night vision goggles." He said with a slight grin as he handed the goggles back to Donnie, who put them on.
"Just never got around to doing them until now." Donnie replied.
"How do we survey such a large area?" Leo asked.
"I came prepared for that, too." Donnie said with a grin as he pressed a button, causing a red hand glider to form out of a backpack. "I've been dying to try this puppy."
"You mean you haven't tested it yet?" Leo asked concerningly, a feeling Alex and Raph shared as well.
"Dude, how's he supposed to test a flying machine in the sewers?" Mikey pointed out, to which Alex shrugged in agreement, though Donnie could've just tested it out during any night out.
"We'll stay in touch via Shell-cell." Donnie said as he lowered a headset on his goggles, Alex's Shell-cell beeping, indicating they were now connected.
"I've worked out all the theoretical aerodynamics. It's practically foolproof!" Donnie said as he ran to the edge and took off in the air, though losing height.
"WHOA!" He cried out as he managed to avoid sinking in the river.
"But is it Don proof?" Raph asked jokingly.
"Did you forget to compensate for the wind drag on your staff?" Alex asked knowingly through his Shell-cell.
"Maybe." Donnie replied bashfully as he flew near the bridge. "Uh-oh." He was heading right for the top of the bridge, but he was able to make a sharp right turn away.
He soon soared past the bridge and headed towards the seaport, where he saw what he could best describe as a whirlpool.
"Guys, I'm picking up something strange down on the river." He informed the others.
"What is it?" Leo asked.
"It looks like they're searching for something under the water." Donnie replied as he descended towards the whirlpool.
"Is it the ninjas?" Alex asked.
Donnie looked at the whirlpool, seeing that it was caused by a blue laser from what looked like an advanced cannon on top of some scaffolding. He zoomed in with his goggles, seeing a couple of technicians that bore the foot symbol on their chests.
"It's them, alright." Donnie confirmed before looking to see that the cannon was being powered by the Sword of Tengu. "They have that sword they stole rigged up to some kind of vibrational cannon." He decided to get in closer. "I'm over Pier 16."
"We'll be there." Alex replied as he and the others all ran along the bridge's support cable.
"I'm going in for a closer LOOK!" Donnie replied, getting too close and was caught up in the laser beam, spinning like crazy to the point that the glider got torn.
"DONNIE!" Alex shouted into his Shell-cell, seeing that he was caught up in the beam, making him and the others run faster.
Donnie then ended up being thrown out of the beam, still spinning out of control.
"Mayday, mayday! I'm going down!" Donnie shouted as he neared the water, screaming until he crashed into the river.
"DON? DONNIE? DO YOU READ ME?" Alex shouted into his Shell-cell as he and the others made it to the docks, growing more concerned when the seconds passed by.
Soon, Donnie made it to the surface of the river, spitting some water out.
"Man, that water stinks." Donnie ranted, which made his brothers be so relieved as they grinned. "And this is from a turtle who lives in the sewers."
"Yes!" The four cheered, pumping their fists.
They then continued making their way through the docks, heading for Pier 16 and soon saw the cannon.
"We have a visual on the cannon, Donnie." Alex said to his Shell-cell. "Those two guys are still there. The rest must be waiting to ambush us."
And that was proven true only seconds later as a whole bunch of ninjas appeared out of the sail ship next to them, surrounding the four.
"I hate it when you're right." Mikey told Alex, who put away his Shell-cell.
"Let's pulverise 'em!" They all cried out in unison, pulling their weapons out and leapt in all directions.
Raph blocked a ninja's katana with his sais while Mikey knocked another off their feet with his nunchucks.
Alex spin kicked another in the head, throwing them into the water before blocking a tonfa as Leo blocked one katana with his two katanas.
He then ducked so that Alex could roll on his shell and then kick another ninja away.
The pair then noticed more ninjas on the ship and jumped onboard, kicking a ninja each.
Alex then sliced a ninja's katana clean off before sweeping them off their feet and slamming his foot down on his chest while Leo blocked another ninja's katana, kicking him overboard.
Meanwhile, Donnie climbed up on the pier, rolling towards the shadows of the building on the pier.
Two ninjas jumped down from the ship to attack him. He knocked one of them into the water with his bo staff, blocking an attack from the other before knocking him into the water as well.
Donnie pole vaulted onto the ship and spun his staff over his head as some more ninjas charged at him.
Alex broke off from Leo and fought against three ninjas all at once, blocking their attacks and moving his way towards some barrels, where he flipped on top of one and then jumped to avoid getting cut. Alex then jumped onto one of the ninja's heads before using him as a springboard and rolled away, spinning on the spot before charging at them, slashing at them in a blur, charging past them.
Once he stopped, the three all fell on the ship deck, moaning in agony from the slash marks Alex gave them.
Raph was climbing up a rope ladder when a couple of ninja stood on the yard above him and one of them cut the rope ladder with their kama.
"WHOA!" Raph yelled as he fell until he managed to dig his sai into the mast right as he would've landed on the deck with his shell.
"Why you…" He growled as the pair of ninjas landed on the deck to face him.
But Raph's attention was currently at the cannon that was still firing into the river.
The two technicians working on the cannon spotted something at the bottom of the river in the centre of the whirlpool.
"We found what we're looking for. Bring in aerial support." One of them spoke to the communicator on their wrist.
"Avast ye scurvy dogs !" Mikey said in his pirate voice, spinning his nunchucks as he faced some ninjas. "Arr! Shiver me timbers and blow me down!"
He then laughed as he backed up, soon hitting a wall behind him, making him realise that he was now trapped.
"Okay, about that blow me down part…." Mikey said, growing worried.
The ninjas were about to charge at him when a sail fell on top of them, trapping them.
Mikey looked up and grinned to see that it was because of Alex, who stood on a yard, giving Mikey a casual salute.
"Hope you don't mind." Alex said to his brother.
"Thanks, bro." Mikey said gratefully with a thumbs up.
A helicopter that was branded with the foot symbol flew in towards the whirlpool and hovered directly over it. The thing that they were looking for seemed to be a suit of armour, which lost parts and seemed rusted and covered in seaweed.
The helicopter lowered a claw and grabbed the armour.
Back on the ship, Raph still faced off against the two ninjas wielding kamas with chains attached to them. One of them threw their chain, which wrapped around one of Raph's sais.
"Nice try, dipstick." Raph mocked as he slid the chain off.
However, the other ninja threw his chain and wrapped it around Raph's legs, causing him to fall over the railing behind him and hang upside down.
The first ninja then jumped down and landed beneath Raph, ready to take him down.
"Who says I never cut you a break?" Leo asked as he swung in from a yard and sliced the chain, releasing Raph, who yelled before crashing into the ninja below him.
"Not pretty, but I'll take it." Raph grinned as he stood and twirled his sais.
Donnie and Alex faced off against a pair of ninjas. The one Donnie faced off swung his katana, hitting Donnie's staff and Donnie struck him in the face, throwing him back. Alex sliced his ninja's katana and then side kicked him in the chest, launching him into the lifeboat.
The ninja Donnie smacked came back and charged at him, but the turtle slammed his staff on the ninja's foot, making him hop as he grabbed his foot in pain.
Donnie then tripped him and threw him into the lifeboat with the other ninja.
With the weight of the two combined, the lifeboat was lowered all on its own at a fast speed and sunk in the water below.
"I think this teamwork effort gets a 'most improved'." Leo said as he and his brothers gathered together, fistbumping Alex.
"School's not out yet. That's one cool as shell helicopter." Donnie said, pointing at the helicopter over the whirlpool as it pulled out the armour from the river.
"Why would they be interested in whatever that is?" Alex asked as the helicopter then closed up once the claw got back in and took off.
"Whatever it is, it can't be good." Raph replied.
They all then got off the ship and ran at top speed towards the cannon.
The technician that was working on the cannon pressed two buttons, which shut the laser beam off and the whirlpool was no more. The two then started dismantling the cannon and one of them grabbed the gauntlet when Leo popped up at a corner of the scaffolding.
"Now, boys, there's a small matter of some stolen property we need to discuss." He told them as Alex popped up next to him.
"Yeah, as well as the blackouts, which are disrupting everyone's day." Alex added.
The two technicians gasped as the one with the gauntlet dropped it before they tried to run off, only to stop when Donnie popped up at another corner.
"Dudes, you really shouldn't be playing with such dangerous toys." He told them off right before Raph popped up.
The technicians ran to another corner where Mikey popped up, growling.
One of the technicians then pulled out a small laser, firing at Mikey, who ducked in time to avoid being hit.
He was so focused that he didn't notice Leo charging at him until it was too late, as Leo jumped and kicked him away just as he fired, his shot hitting the controls for the cannon.
This made the Sword of Tengu overload the cannon, a side effect being that it shook so hard that the five brothers had a hard time hanging on the scaffolding.
"It's overloading. I can't control it." One of the technicians said with worry.
"Who cares? We're leaving." The other shrugged off, pointing at the helicopter from earlier as it lowered and the two jumped on. It then took off as they climbed in.
"They're getting away!" Raph shouted as he and his brothers got on top of the scaffolding.
The cannon started beeping and it fired a laser beam again, this time moving on its own away from the river and towards the seaport.
"I think we got bigger problems." Donnie told Raph as they all looked in horror as the wooden walkway fell apart and the concrete section started cracking and crumbling.
"Talk about bad vibes." Mikey joked.
"Not funny, Mike!" Raph scowled.
"Don, can you shut it down?" Leo asked Donnie, who was looking at the cannon, while Alex grabbed the gauntlet, knowing that it needed to be worn if someone were to wield the sword.
"Well, I might be able to disconnect the sword from the accelerator…" Donnie replied, jumping on top of the cannon with a crowbar, ripping open a panel to work on. "...but crossing the power terminator could result in a feedback loop that might -"
"Donnie, just shut up and do the task at hand!" Alex snapped him out of his techno talk.
"Meantime, let's point this thing away from civilization!" Leo instructed everyone else.
The four went to the firing end of the cannon, trying to push it away as hard as they could, but it was just too heavy to move.
"This is the police!" A voice rang out in the air. Alex and Raph turned their heads to see a police helicopter heading right for them. "You on the pier, stop where you are!"
"Hurry up, Don, before we end up on America's Most Wanted!" Raph urged Donnie.
"Almost there." Donnie tried assuring him as he connected two wires, but instantly realised that he shouldn't have done that. "Uh-oh."
The other four yelled as they were thrown onto the scaffolding because the cannon now started spinning out of control, throwing Donnie off as well. He tried getting back on to stop it, but he got launched back by the firing end of the cannon.
"We got to steady this thing!" Leo shouted as Alex spotted the crowbar next to him.
"Leo, catch!" He shouted and threw it to Leo, who caught it and lodged it into the cannon, keeping it in place, but making it start to overload even more.
Alex then put the gauntlet on and pulled the Sword of Tengu out of the cannon, its overload now increasing.
"Let's get out of here!" Donnie shouted and they all jumped off the scaffolding and ran as far as possible before the scaffolding broke apart and the cannon fell into the river, exploding in a bright light.
"Whoa. Awesome light show." Mikey commented before they all noticed the police helicopter closing in.
"Time to leave this light show." Alex noted before the five of them ran away into a shadow filled alleyway between some warehouses.
They made it back to the lair and showed Splinter the sword, which he held with the gauntlet on, examining it.
"The design is unmistakably eleventh century Japanese. But the metal is unlike any I have ever seen." Splinter told his sons, totally baffled. "Clearly, there is more to this sword than meets the eye." He then got up and put the sword on a display. "Best that it remain out of the wrong hands."
The whole family then walked off so that they could go to sleep after having a taxing night.
At the same time, within the skyscraper, the two technicians were brought forth by the man in charge, having explained what happened, to which the man wasn't pleased.
"For a long time, longer than you can possibly imagine, my enemies have managed to elude me." He snarled before standing up. "Here at last is proof of their presence in this city…" He pointed over to the suit that was found in the river, now in a glass display case. "...and all it cost me was the Sword of Tengu!" He then smacked the display case meant for the sword, smashing upon impact with the floor.
"Master, there were extenuating circumstances. These four strange creatures and some boy, they came from nowhere." One of the technicians pointed out.
"Were these the five you saw?" The man asked, showing the pair an infrared image of the five brothers.
"Oh, yes." The pair replied in unison.
"That will be all." The man told them. They bowed and walked to the doors, horrified to see Hun on the other side when they opened.
They cried out as they grabbed and the doors closed.
"These thorns in my side must be removed…" The man snarled in anger before placing the image on the table and put on the two pronged gauntlet. "...permanently!"
He then stabbed the image, seeing that their deaths were the only solution.
The plot is thickening. And a heads up, the next chapter will have a tease at the very end, won't say what, though.
