"I see someone had a goodnight," Dan commented, sipping on his cup of coffee in the kitchen.
Nathan had woken up early and snuck out of his room, careful not to wake Haley, to surprise his girlfriend with breakfast in bed. He had to be swift in his action, allowing himself enough time to slip on a pair of boxers.
Following the championship game against Pontiac, Nathan and Haley decided to skip the after party at Karen's and head home instead. Haley was tired from the overwhelming stress of this past week and her hospital visit didn't help matters. Nathan had no complaints. He preferred to stay in for the night with Haley and the baby rather than party.
Nathan's decision ultimately benefited him in the end. It was only the two of them in the large house as Dan and Deb celebrated with the rest of the parents. Yesterday marked Haley's official move into the Scott household and she was eager to test out her new bed with Nathan. Nathan couldn't help but oblige to the wants and needs of his pregnant girlfriend.
"I saw this on your desk yesterday," Dan said, handing Nathan his acceptance letter to High Flyers. "It's dated a couple weeks ago. Why am I just hearing about this now?"
"Because I'm not sure if I'm going," Nathan admitted. High Flyers would require him to be away for the entire summer. Haley was going to be in her third trimester for his duration at camp. If he went to High Flyers, he would make it back in time only days before she delivered. He couldn't leave her alone. She was already without her parents, his absence would be hard on her and their son.
"Not going?" Dan questioned. "Nathan this is an amazing opportunity. And going off the heels of a state championship win is even better."
"I know," Nathan agreed. Everything revolving basketball was going perfectly for him but so was Haley. Haley and him were in a good place. Abandoning her and the baby for High Flyers would crush her and possibly ruin their relationship. Since committing to Haley, he tried his best to be the boyfriend she deserved. "But I can't leave Haley and the baby."
"Yes, you can. I'm sure Haley would understand." Dan had been training Nathan for years for a state championship win and this camp. All the pros went to camps like High Flyers. He was not going to let his son throw it away for some girl.
Dan was confident Haley would put up a fight and coerce Nathan into staying at Tree Hill for her and the baby in case something were to happen. However, Dan saw this as a weak excuse. Aside from the stress, Haley and the baby were perfectly healthy. By the time Nathan would return from High Flyers, Haley will not even have went into labor.
"It's too much of a risk," Nathan argued.
"You're making a mistake, Nathan," Dan warned.
"You said that already about staying with Haley and the baby," Nathan pointed out.
"And I stand by that," Dan cemented. Though he was starting to accept Haley and his grandson as permeant fixtures in his family, he still condemned Nathan's choice. "Don't forget that basketball is number one. You've already got the scouts attention and an agent."
"An agent I wouldn't have unless it wasn't for Haley." His ties to Clay were strictly through the James' family connection. He had gotten lucky with Haley. His life turned around for the better because of her.
"And you know how I feel about him." Dan was yet to be impressed by Clay Evans. From his research, Nathan would be his first client. This guy was new to the game and had no prior experience. Dan didn't want Clay to be the reason for Nathan's basketball career to go south.
"Is there a point to this, Dad?"
"Yes. You tell Haley or I will. As simple as that." Dan patted Nathan on the chest with his newspaper before heading out for the day, leaving Nathan to contemplate his decisions.
Would he be making the wrong choice by missing High Flyers? He had to talk to Haley. Nathan had been pushing it off for weeks, not looking forward to the discussion. Haley would not be pleased. He just hoped she would support him if he decided to go.
Nathan shook off his thoughts and remembered the sleeping girl he had in his bed. He'd come down for a reason and that was to make Haley breakfast in bed, not to get all glum about High Flyers and potentially leaving for the summer.
Going into the refrigerator, Nathan grabbed the eggs, orange juice, cheese, and milk. Haley had been complaining how she really wanted homemade cheesy eggs last night, so Nathan thought to deliver upon her request. He whipped up her cheesy eggs and made some toast for the side. It wasn't the most elaborate breakfast-in-bed-meal, but it was within his capabilities.
Heading upstairs, Nathan went to surprise his girlfriend who was hopefully still asleep. He went straight for his room and opened the door to find that his closet had exploded all around him. Nathan was gone for fifteen minutes, tops. How had Haley mustered so much energy in the morning to tear apart his room?
Haley hopped out of the closet trying on a dress of hers. The zipper in the seam had busted at the side. She groaned at the sight.
"Did the closet explode?" Nathan mused, setting Haley's breakfast down on his dresser.
Haley turned around when he heard Nathan's voice. She gave him a weak smile, hoping that he would cheer her up. "How do I look in this?" Haley asked.
"Is there a right answer to that question?" Nathan replied. He didn't want to say anything wrong. Haley had been really hormonal recently and any little comment would set her off.
"Well, none of my dresses fit me anymore!" Haley complained, throwing a hanger Nathan's way as she sat on their unmade bed.
"Baby, you're pregnant. They're not supposed to fit you," Nathan reminded, joining her on the bed.
For the past few weeks, Haley had begun to get more and more self conscious regarding her figure, especially with a boyfriend. She knew she wasn't tall and skinny like his previous girlfriend and the extra baby weight didn't help matters either. But Nathan constantly was assuring her that none of that mattered to him. He thought the baby weight made her sexy, though Haley disagreed.
When she woken up that morning, she remembered that junior prom was coming up in two months. By the time it would arrive, Haley would be about six months pregnant. She needed to find a dress in her closet that would fit right. It wasn't like she had the funds to spend exorbitant amounts of money on one. All the money she made went straight towards the baby.
"In a perfect world, I would go to prom, wear such a beautiful dress, and I would dance with my boyfriend. But even if there was a dress somewhere in this world that fit me, I don't even have any money for it anyway because all of my money is set aside for the baby," Haley cried. Nathan hadn't even begun to think about prom. He thought he had time with it being two months away. "It's okay. You know what? I'll just…I'll go and I'll be pregnant and, you know, most likely wearing sweatpants."
"Hey. Hey, you'll look great in anything, okay? It's all right," Nathan tried to reassure her. "Except maybe that dress."
Haley groaned and pushed Nathan away going back into her closet trying to find a dress that would fit. Nathan chuckled. His girl was something else. That was for damn sure.
"Yo, Nate. What's up, dog?" Skills greeted Nathan as he walked onto the River Court.
"Clearing my head," Nathan said, making a basket. Ever since Nathan was little, basketball was his escape if having a rough day. Between his father pestering him about High Flyer's and Haley's worries surrounding prom, Nathan needed a break. So when Haley went to say her final goodbyes to her parents before they departed for their cross country travels, he decided to go to the River Court thinking he would be alone.
"About what? You just won the game?" Skills questioned. Nathan had everything he wanted. He won the state championship and had the best girlfriend.
"Money," Nathan admitted. He felt extremely guilty that Haley was working at the café and the tutoring center to help with baby expenses while he had no job. She worked so hard while he didn't work at all. His parents paid all his expenses. Nathan realized that morning that, as a boyfriend and father, he hadn't been doing enough to provide for Haley and the baby. "Haley's worked nonstop to earn money for the baby and I've done nothing. I wish I could be more helpful to them you know."
Skills' face lit up at the prospect of Nathan needing money. "Yeah. Hey, look, I got a way you can make some real quick cash," Skills offered. Nathan perked his head up at the suggestion. "You know that club over there on Stinson Street?"
"The strip club?" Nathan questioned. Skills nodded his head eagerly. "Whatever you're about to say, the answer is no."
"Oh, come on, dog. Man, they have an amateur night tonight. A thousand dollar prize, man." Skills had been trying to find someone to enter the contest with him. He was determined to win and after making the moves on Bevin after the game last night, Skills needed to follow through. "Look, them girls went crazy over you at Boy Toy. I'm telling you, me and you together, dog, we can't lose."
"No. The answer's still no. I'm sorry. I'm just not that desperate." Nathan wanted to earn money for Haley, but he wouldn't strip for it.
"Alright, but we could have blew up the place, though. Look, man, I've been watching these new Usher videos on TRL. My moves is tight, dog. Look." Skills gave Nathan a little demonstration, using a few of Usher's moves. "Look at this one. Think about it. Think about it. Think about it. Think about it."
Nathan chuckled to himself. Skills was definitely persistent. The more Nathan thought about it, the more Nathan actually considered the possibility. Splitting a thousand dollars would mean five hundred that he could put towards Haley and the baby.
"Just how naked do we have to get?" Nathan asked out of curiosity.
"See? I knew you would come around. Don't worry man. We're gonna win this thing," Skills assured him with a smile. With every girl fawning over him and Nathan there was no way they could lose.
"I don't know man, you haven't seen me dance. I'm terrible," Nathan admitted. Even Haley hadn't seen him dance and there was a reason for it. He just hoped that he wouldn't embarrass her too much at the prom.
"Man, you'll be fine. We got the best choreographer in town." A car pulled up to the River Court and Skills checked his imaginary watch. "And he's right on time." Nathan cocked his head quizzically wondering on how Skills could have banked on him agreeing so fast. "I had a feeling you'd come around."
Mouth hopped out of his car with a boombox and a few CDs in hand. Skills knew to employ Mouth as choreographer due to his not-so-secret talent of dancing. Brooke had even used Mouth a month ago to help the cheer squad come up with an original routine for the Sparkle Classic.
"Hey, Nate," Mouth greeted setting his stuff down on the picnic table.
"So, look, you can't be that bad, so let's see what you got," Skills said. Nathan threw him his basketball as Mouth hit play on the music.
Nathan awkwardly bopped his head up and down to the music before moving into a poor variation of the twist. Skills had to remain quiet and not let on how horrible Nathan was doing. They were doomed if Nathan was going to dance like this.
"Is he as bad as I think he is?" Skills whispered to Mouth.
"No, he's worse," Mouth said, watching Nathan dance with mostly his arms. It was like a car crash because he couldn't look away. How could someone so coordinated on the court be so bad on the dance floor?
"Maybe it's the song," Skills suggested.
"What's Peyton doing here?" Nathan questioned as Peyton walked into the gym during his dance practice with Skills and Mouth. The less people that knew about this the better.
"Nice to see you too," Peyton said, walking past Nathan to hand the mix CD to Skills. "Track number two. It's the off-the-hook hip-hop jam with a really easy beat to follow just like you requested."
"Oh, so you done went old school on me. I like that," Skills smiled, giving Mouth the CD to choreograph to. The boys were two days away from the competition and had no routine. Nathan could barely dance to the past five tracks Mouth had selected, so they enlisted Peyton for some help.
"So what do you guys need this music for, anyway?" Peyton asked. She was used to making mix CDs for her friends, but Skills had been very quiet and vague about this one.
"Nothing," Nathan lied. If Peyton found out they were stripping, then Haley was sure to find out as well. Peyton would no doubt blabber to her.
"Well, me and Nathan, let's just say we entered a dance contest," Skills smiled.
"Wait. Nathan Scott? No way!" Peyton exclaimed. In her entire time knowing Nathan, there was one thing he refused to do and it was dance. And when Peyton had caught him once last year, it was awful. There had to be something else going on for Nathan to dance. "What aren't you telling me?"
"Let's just say you got to show some skin to win," Skills continued.
"Skills!" Nathan whined, wide eyed. He couldn't believe him. Of course Skills had no shame in telling the world about their stripping, Skills was just one of those people who rarely got embarrassed.
"You guys are stripping? Shut up!" Peyton laughed. This was going to be hilarious. She couldn't wait to see it, knowing Mouth would have something up his sleeve.
"It's for Haley," Nathan clarified.
"Don't you two share a bedroom for that?" Peyton asked. She preferred to not know about the sexapades that went on between Nathan and Haley. Seeing their home movie had been enough for her eyes.
"There's a cash prize and my share is going towards Haley and the baby," Nathan explained in further detail, trying to get Peyton's mind out of the gutter.
"Please, can I tell Lucas?" Peyton asked. Lucas was either going to get a kick out of this or be traumatized.
"Better than that, why don't you tell some girls. They need all the audience they can get," Mouth interjected. While acting as choreographer, he had been slowly spreading the word to ensure Skills' and Nathan's win. If the audience was made up of Tree Hill students, they would most likely vote for the pair.
"Just please don't tell Haley," Nathan begged. The last thing he needed was for Haley to show up. He didn't want her to know that he stooped this low for some quick cash. It was practically prostitution minus the sex part.
"I promise I won't tell Haley," Peyton said. "But that doesn't mean Lucas won't."
After two days of grueling dance practice, Nathan had actually started to land the moves. They weren't as fluid as Skills or Mouth's moves, but he at least hit them and less awkwardly so.
In just fifteen minutes, he would go up on stage and win the money for Haley and their son. Thankfully, Haley was still completely unaware of the stripping. Either Peyton hadn't told Lucas or Lucas hadn't told Haley, but his girlfriend never mentioned it or asked where he was going. It helped that he corresponded his dance practices with her work schedule. He could be out with Skills and Mouth and Haley would never know.
In the wings of the strip club, Nathan watched as more and more classmates from school filled the seats. He really wished Mouth hadn't told as many people. It was nice to have spectators, but with Rachel being there, he'd begun to dread the night.
Rachel had not relented on her quest to have Nathan. They were broken up for months, but she still had it in her mind that they were meant to be. Nathan tried to avoid her at all costs and occasionally she would trap him into a conversation that he couldn't get out of. However, Haley wouldn't be too far behind, claiming what was hers.
Nathan turned his focus back onto the stage. It quelled his fears and worries a little bit. After watching a couple of the acts, Nathan was sure Skills and him would win. Their completion either ranged from overweight to insanely hairy. And he swore their dancing was worse than his, which was saying something.
"The guy's gonna have a heart attack," Nathan commented to the boys.
"I checked out all the other competition. There's no way you guys don't win," Mouth assured them. Nathan and Skills were shoe-ins. They were in good shape and young. That went far in the stripping business, at least that's what Mouth heard. "Did you get a load of the guy who looked like Chewbacca?"
"Wait, I saw that guy! That dude is furry. Skills, check this out," Nathan encouraged.
Skills moved to the sidelines to see what the big deal was. Instead of focusing on the competition, he was taken aback by the audience size. And just like he had hoped, Bevin was in the audience. The pressure was on.
"Man, there's a lot of people out there," Skills said. Feeling a wave of heat and nausea wash over him, he moved away from the curtain and sat down. "Man, is it hot in here or is it just me?"
"Well, it's gonna be even hotter on stage under those lights," Nathan said, not paying attention to Skills' freak out.
"Yeah..." Skills trailed. This was getting too real. In theory, tonight should have been easy. He would go out on stage, dance, strip, and win. However, stage fright had gotten the best of him. He didn't want to disappoint Bevin and let everyone see him without his clothes. Believe it or not Skills was self-conscious about his body. "Maybe I better sit this one out. I don't think I can go on."
Nathan and Mouth turned away from the curtain and looked at each other before locking eyes with Skills. "Skills, this plan was your idea. What do you mean you can't go on?" Nathan questioned.
"Man, you see all them people out there?" Skills argued. There were too many people out there and many of those people he knew. It was embarrassing. He chastised himself for coming up with this idea in the first place.
"Our next act is Double Trouble!" The announcer introduced, giving the audience a warning of what was to come.
"That's us. What's it gonna be?" Nathan asked Skills, who was eyeing Mouth suspiciously.
"What are we doing here?" Haley questioned. Lucas pulled her off of her shift at the café for what he called a "can't miss event." She wasn't sure how a strip club factored into that.
"Just sit down and see," Lucas said, urging Haley to sit down at a reserved table that had Peyton, Brooke, and Julian already seated around.
"Tutor girl, glad to see you could make it!" Brooke cheered. "You haven't missed anything special yet."
"On amateur night, aren't I lucky?" Haley grumbled. She would much rather be at the café than the strip club or better yet at home sleeping. Her baby boy definitely took a lot out of her.
"Come on, Hales, I heard this next act is supposedly really good," Julian grinned. When Peyton had spilled the information to him and Brooke he couldn't wait to see what Mouth had put together for Skills and Nathan. All he knew Mouth to choreograph was cheer routines. Seeing that skill being translated into stripping would definitely be a sight to see.
"And really hot," Brooke added, wiggling her eyebrows.
"Brooke!" Julian scolded.
"What?" Brooke asked innocently. "I have eyes."
"Guys, they're starting," Peyton said, turning the group's attention to the stage.
Lucas handed Haley a stack of ones from his pocket. "You're gonna need these," Lucas whispered.
The act known as Double Trouble made their way onto the stage with their backs turned to the audience. Once the music to "It's Tricky" by Run DMC started to play, the boys began the show.
As the chorus hit, the boys, who were wearing track suits and hoods to cover their identity, turned around to face the audience. Removing their hoods, Haley was shocked to see Nathan under one of the hoods while the rest of the group was thrown off by Mouth replacing Skills.
Nathan ran around the stage as he danced, locking eyes with Rachel at first. He shook off the flirty glances she was giving him and continued with the routine. Nothing was going to get in his way, until he came to a complete halt seeing Haley seated below him.
She did not look happy. Her lips were pursed and her body language reeked of disappointment. It wasn't until her stone cold reaction melted into one of pure joy and laughter that Nathan relaxed. She waved her stack of ones in the air encouraging Nathan to continue along with the rest of their friends hollering.
Nathan continued on with the routine as planned and removed his zip up to throw in Haley's direction. He had to laugh to himself as he caught Lucas trying to cover Haley's eyes, but Haley was completely immersed in it.
Just as they were about to finish, Skills had joined them for the grand finale in nothing but his briefs. Bevin had given him some encouragement backstage which made Skills quickly forget about his fears and apprehensions. All that mattered was that Bevin had came to see her man dance.
The routine ended with Mouth and Nathan removing their sweatpants to reveal basketball shorts. Thanks to Brooke's help, she crafted the perfect tear away pants for the occasion.
The crowd roared by the time the boys finished. Nathan could help, but look at Haley. She was laughing and seemed like she genuinely had a good time.
Though he didn't want her to come initially, he was glad to see Haley loosening up and having a good time before she went into panicking mother mode. She worked herself too hard sometimes. Haley gestured at Nathan for him to call her afterwards and all he could do was blush.
"How you doing, hot stuff?" Haley teased, coming out from the closet twirling Nathan's golden underwear around. Mouth had gotten it as a gag for him and Skills. It was a joke played at his expense. The guys had him fooled into believing that he would be wearing that when he stripped.
"Very funny. Get it all out," Nathan said, setting a box down on his and Haley's bed.
"How much for a lap dance?" Haley continued as she stalked closer to Nathan.
"You done?" Nathan asked, rolling his eyes. He should have known Haley would never live this one down.
"Not even close. I'm serious. How much for a lap dance?" Haley threw her arms around her boyfriend and kissed him softly. Seeing Nathan up there on stage earlier in the night really turned her on.
"I needed some quick cash, okay?"
"What for?" Haley contained her emotions for the time being, wondering why Nathan needed cash. He had an endless supply of money coming from his parents. He didn't need to strip to get some.
"This." Nathan handed Haley the box he had just finished wrapping. Haley sat down on their bed as she opened it carefully. Her breath hitched in her throat at the sight of her gift from Nathan. "They actually have prom dresses in the maternity section. Who knew?"
"Nathan, this is really beautiful." Haley had begun to get teary eyed. It was just last week that she was complaining about not having a dress to wear to prom and here he had gone out of his way to get her one. "You didn't need to do this."
"Yes, I did. I wanted to help out. You're always working around the clock to provide for our son. I thought that maybe if I earned some money I could surprise you," Nathan explained. "I just wanted you to have a great prom, Hales."
"Thank you. As much as I appreciate this, maybe we should have waited to save the money." The dress was perfect for her, but she didn't need it. It was only for junior prom, the real thing was next year. The money would be better suited for the baby.
"I thought you would say that." Nathan handed her the rest of his winnings from his pocket. "I had some money left over and thought we should put it towards the baby. And besides, you said, in a perfect world, you'd wear a pretty dress and you'd dance with your boyfriend."
"Even when I'm this big in a couple of months." Haley gaged the approximate size of her belly would be for prom with her hands. She would be about six months along.
"That's not gonna stop me" Nathan pressed a light kiss to Haley's forehead reassuring her. He held Haley against him as she rested her head on his shoulder while her fingers danced up and down his chest. "Now didn't you say something about a lap dance?"
"You're incorrigible, you know?"
"So that's a yes?"
"As long as you're doing the dancing."
