Ch. 21: The Flames of What Was
Taking Dani's hand, Maura closed her eyes and concentrated. Despite being not gifted magic, Maura was able to take up the original connection that Regina created. Almost immediately, her arm felt like a static amplified by two-fold then the feeling going to her head. "If you need to close your eyes, Maura, it's okay," Adam assured as he placed a chair behind her.
Maura nodded and lowered herself into the chair. Darkness was what she saw at first until she felt a hand touch her own. Her eyes opened to stare up to a night sky and a familiar face.
"Welcome to my realm, Doctor Isles," Hyde greeted casually.
"It's a high bounty," Regina commented as she's reading the sheet in her hands.
Jane looked over Regina's shoulder. Her eyes widened immediately at the sight of the many zeros, "Holy shit."
"What," Korsak inquired.
Regina handed the older detective the paper. He took the paper then his eyes widened. "He put that much out for all of us," Korsak asked.
Regina looked down at their attacker. "You are a nomad," the witch pointed out, "so money is nothing to you."
"Not when I can get trade," the witch hissed. She tried to lunge toward Regina once more with Frankie and Frost pulling her back.
"So how are we getting back to the safehouse," Frost shouted.
"Don't worry, I got that handled," Regina assured. She looked around the area and approached the old mausoleum. She pulled out a piece of chalk from her bag and drew a large circle with some runes on it. She then placed the chalk away and waved her hand in front of the drawn circle.
In an instant, the portal opened to show the safehouse.
"Magic is so cool," Frankie praised.
They walked through the portal, dragging their suspect until they were on porch of the safehouse. Being on the porch, they unlocked the door and pushed it opened with Adam walking into the foyer. Upon seeing that she was entering the room, the attacker started to fight against her restraints.
"What do you got," Adam asked, rushing over to grab the witch.
"Solitary witch going for a bounty," Regina answered then she pulled out the bounty poster.
Adam glanced at the poster, trudging toward the staircase when he halted. "You sure," he asked seriously. Regina nodded and Adam looked back at the witch, "You definitely have something to say."
"Fuck you monster," the witch snarled.
Adam raised an eyebrow then lifted her up, placing her over his shoulder and began to walk down the staircase toward the lower level. Vince, Frankie, and Frost decided to follow Adam while Regina walked quickly toward the parlor with Jane following close behind.
"Maura," Jane called out. There was no reply, prompting Jane to hasten her steps toward the room. When she reached the doorway, she observed Nina checking on Maura's pulse.
The sight stopped Jane in her tracks. There was a flush feeling that reached the top of her head and her ears started to ring as if she went through a loud area. Maura knows what it is called, her mind remembered vaguely.
"Jane…"
Her fingers tingled and her scars seemed to throb uncontrollably then she felt a hand on her shoulder causing her to grab hold of the doorway quickly. Regina steadied Jane and asked, "Are you okay?"
Jane opened her mouth then closed it. What words that Jane wanted to express could not get pass her lips. Sensing that Jane was struggling to speak, Regina guided the detective toward Maura and Dani. Finally looking away from her laptop, Nina took Jane's other arm and gestured toward a chair next to Maura.
Once she felt the cushion below her, Jane let out a shaky breath. Her fingers twitched as she raised her hand to push a blonde strand. "Seeing her this way, I feel…helpless," Regina heard.
"I understand that but, she's very brave to do this."
Jane let out a chuckle. "She's always been brave even when she was scared. First time I knew that she was meant to be in my life was she was willing to protect me from a serial killer." She took Maura's hand, taking in the soft but cold touch, "She'll do it if it means if it will help someone." Brown eyes darted up, "She's going to be okay?"
Regina sat down. "Magic is delicate but Mama taught me well," the witch assured.
Jane's attention snapped. My big ass mouth, Jane groaned inwardly however, Regina shook her head and patted Jane's shoulder.
"Jane, I know you don't doubt my abilities."
Jane's shoulders lowered, "My filter isn't working right."
"I don't expect anything less especially with our loved ones in these positions."
Jane's fingers fiddled at her watch, twisting it backwards then back around. "So, we wait," Jane commented.
Regina nodded, "We wait and listen." She then adjusted the portal enough for Jane and herself to peer through. "Give it a moment and we should be able to see them. Hopefully, they will hear us as well."
"Hopefully."
The doctor wobbled. Hyde grabbed a hold of Maura and steadied her, "Whoa there, doc. Try to get your sea legs."
"Am I supposed to feel this unsteady," the doctor inquired, attempting to gain her footing.
Hyde shrugged, "I don't know how magic works exactly. Just know that you are here and everyone else is out there."
"Out where?"
"Somewhere."
"Hyde…"
"It's not meant to be a play on words, Maura. Look around you."
Maura sighed but took in her surroundings for the first time to see that she was no longer in the safehouse's library but on a cobblestone street. "It feels so real," Maura said as she released Hyde's rough hands to feel the breeze against her cheek.
"As much as it feels like this, everything is a vision; a memory in the back of Dani's mind," Hyde explained.
Maura looked around, "But Dani isn't here."
Hyde shook their head, "At times, she is but I think going so deep in her mind is a lot on her."
"So, what do we do?'
"We start to walk and hopefully, we will find the memory."
Regina's eyes darted to the screens, watching as the lines move along the screen. She raised her hands up, feeling her fingers shake slightly. Magic was potent; it constantly ran through the veins with great speed. Now as the leader of the coven in Boston now, she held now two lives in her hands. Jane closed her eyes, holding Maura's hand while the mirror continued to stay somewhat fogged.
She wasn't sure what it exactly meant but, hopefully, Hyde and Maura would show up somehow. However, she needed to focus on the other situation and it was the large bounty on their head. She seen some high bounties, ranging in hundreds to thousands but she never saw over a billion before.
"Regina," Jane raised her head up to see Korsak standing at the doorway. "The witch is getting a bit…aggressive."
"I can't leave," Regina retorted.
"I can watch them, Regina," Jane assured as she stretched in her chair. "Like you said, it's a waiting game right now until they find something or Dani reacts." Regina's lips pressed together with a small unsure look at Maura and Dani then back at Jane. "Also," Jane started, "I got Nina still here with me."
Regina sighed, "Alright but, you need to get me if something happens."
"Scout's honor, I will."
The witch pivoted, "Shall we?"
They descended the stairs toward the basement to see Frost and Frankie sitting behind their makeshift interrogation window while Adam waited with the witch inside. She refused to look at the creature as he spoke, "Listen, we just need to know your name and who put the bounty on us?"
"Like I would say anything to you," she spat.
Adam crossed his arms, "Listen, whatever Dorian is giving you, it is not worth it."
"I'm not doing this for Dorian," the witch clarified.
Regina's eyes darted toward the bag on table. She opened it briefly then looked back at the interrogation room. "I'm going to take this," she informed before she walked into the room, placing the bag in front of the witch. "So, Eleanor, want to explain how you got these," Regina gestured toward the items in her hands.
"Give those back," Eleanor lunged toward Regina, prompting the other woman to pull back the pages in her hand. She slid them over toward Adam, who collected the pages to read them.
The creature's eyes drifted toward them. "Look like ancient ruins," he pointed out.
"Shut up," Eleanor hissed.
Regina snapped her fingers quickly and Eleanor's voice was muffled. Adam gave a surprised expression as Regina pointed toward the paper, "Those are pages from the Black Magic Book." Adam's eyes widened while Eleanor lunged once more, attempting to scare Regina. However, Regina did not flinch at the sight but continued, "Dorian gave this to you over money. Why?"
Eleanor looked away; her eyes refusing to meet Regina's. "Do we worry," Adam inquired, trying his best to decipher the runes.
Regina waved her hand, unsealing Eleanor's lips. "You know that the pages are useless especially with them being ripped out from their original source," Regina smirked.
"You lie!"
Regina sighed, "I have no time to lie especially with my lover in a deep memory sleep." She took the pages from Adam's hands and placed them down, "So let's start again. Why did Dorian pay you with these pages?"
Time was a vessel.
There is no physical idea of past, present, or future. It has been like this for a long time or at least, in theory. What others consider to be in the past could be their future or even their present and yet, Maura stood in the limbo of it all.
So far, Hyde showed that Dani's mind was never ending with memories popping out in every direction. She spotted little children running in the streets; transparent but clear enough to know that they were laughing and playing aloud. They would fade away then she heard other voices echoing in this world.
"Father is sick, Henry."
"I will fix him. To stop whatever this condition is."
"Henry, you cannot save him."
"I will try!"
"Henry was determined to cure something that was beyond his power," Maura commented.
Hyde leaned against a lamp post. "As Dani once stated that Henry related more to her father than she did. Maybe, at one time, they related but, she was always quiet about it."
She watched as a young Dani ran pass her until it changed to a teenaged Dani wearing a ripped skirt and covered in charcoal. "You need to act like a young lady," Maura could hear an older man chided. Dani rolled her eyes then rubbed her charcoal covered hands onto the skirt, making it worse. The young teen faded and an older one appeared, sitting on a chair in men's dress pants and a short sleeve button shirt. Though the clothes were different, it was noticeable that the Dani that sat there was the one she knew, give or take a couple years.
"Will you ever change," Maura turned to see an older man approaching in a pants suit. He pulled out the pocket watch and checked the time.
"Stay still please," Dani commanded; her eyes not leaving the easel.
Maura looked over at Hyde who continued to observe from the side. "Why am I seeing this," she inquired.
Hyde shrugged, "Not sure."
"Hyde…"
"What," Hyde snipped, "I'm getting lost as you are."
Dani stood up from her seat, passing Maura to stand next her father. "I'm not changing who I am to appease you or to save you from scandal," Dani crossed her arms.
Her father's eyes narrowed, "So be it." He started to walk away but stopped and took one more glance back, "I only want what's best for you, Danielle."
"If you love me then you don't change me or ask me to change."
"Pulse is steady," Nina observed.
"But still no sign of them in the mini portal," Jane sighed.
Nina gave a small knowing and sympathetic smile. She gave Jane a small squeeze on her shoulder, "Remember, Regina even said that magic isn't exactly perfect."
Jane gave a small nod of acknowledgment. She then stepped back toward Dani's body, observing the vitals until she noticed Dani's hand started to twitch. Nina jumped to the computer, trying to analyze the brain waves that were starting to go erratic. "What's happening, Nina," Jane worried.
"I'm not sure," Nina answered.
Suddenly, Maura's hand began to twitch as well.
Jane lunged toward Maura's hand, watching Maura's pulse jump erratically. "Get Regina now," Jane commanded. Nina jogged out while Jane glanced at the portal to see anything and all she saw the fog becoming thicker but, there was a low rumble.
"Thunder," Jane muttered.
Maura looked up at the sky as the thunder rippled with a flash of lightning. Rain began to fall with a light shower and Maura attempted to shield herself from it until an umbrella appeared above her head. "I think we are getting closer," Hyde answered.
"You think so," Maura wondered, placing her hand out to feel the rain. The rain drops were hitting her hand and despite it being a placement in Dani's mind, it was real. She looked down the road, seeing the carriages fading into a fog which prompt Maura to resume her walk then she noticed as she went further into the fog that the umbrella disappeared. "Hyde, what's happening?"
There was no reply; she turned around to see that Hyde was not even there.
"Maura!"
The doctor pivoted quickly, "Jane!"
"This is my chance to save him!"
Maura's head turned to the voice and suddenly, there was a loud clap of thunder and lightning flashed, causing Maura to cover her eyes. When she uncovered her eyes, she blinked a couple times to refocus and finally, she noticed that she was now standing several feet from a large manor covered in fog.
"Where am I," Maura mumbled.
She felt confused and she began to ring her hands, feeling the anxiety start to shoot through her body. "Calm yourself, Maura," Jane's words hummed in Maura's ear. The doctor wanted to lean back, wanting Jane's arms to envelop her but, when she did, her back hit a bench. "I'm not going to let you go," Maura heard.
"John," Dani called.
Maura stood up from her bench to see a young Dani, dressed in a suit, rushing up the manor's front stairs. At the sight, Maura knew that she needed to follow. " Danielle, do not bother to see him," a man warned.
Dani pushed through the man that was running down the staircase; his suit was a mess and his expression showed pure horror or, shock. "I can help him, John," Dani argued back.
"As your lawyer and friend, you cannot." The older man grabbed hold of Dani's shoulders. "He is beyond help, Danielle," he urged. However, Maura knew that Dani was not going to listen to her lawyer. To listen to him was to give up on Henry, an idea that Dani did not want to entertain. Dani pulled away from John and pushed forward as the other man shouted for her but, as they ascended the stairs, the voice faded away.
There were no candles or lights on, leaving the room dark as night itself. But, on instinct, Dani continued through the house until she reached the metal doors. She did not bother to knock but pushed the door open to hear two voices below. "I will live inside you forever," Maura heard the first voice sneer.
Dani started to move faster until she reached the doorway of her brother's lab. Maura's eyes widened in horror as Henry's body seemed to contort; his arm knocking the glass beakers, knocking them off the table, and breaking into pieces.
Maura watched as Dani entered the laboratory and looked around. There was broken glass on the floor; each time crunching under Dani's feet. "I see we have company," Edward sing-song as his body contorted once more. Henry's usual short brown hair had grown longer, and Edward pushed it back with a sweaty hand. Clean clothes were gone and replaced with a blood covered shirt that was ripped in certain places and pants covered in a dark substance; either more blood, dirt, or a mix of both.
Maura saw Henry and she saw a very sophisticated man but Edward Hyde was the opposite. The blonde's definition of 'monster' has changed so many times; monsters from books that are now real, Charles Hoyt, her own father but, this was beyond everything. She never thought she would see anyone worse than Hoyt but, looking at Edward Hyde, she was seeing evil incarnate.
"Edward, let go of your hold of my brother," Dani ordered.
"Or what? You are going to try to fight me," Edward chuckled as he jumped at Dani, pushing her against a wall. Maura gasped in surprise as Edward tightened his grip and laughed, "I will take over your brother then continue my reign of terror."
Suddenly, Dani was thrown across the room with a Bunsen burner hitting one of the liquids. "Oh no," Maura mumbled, knowing the reaction.
Like a match striking, fire began to form and started to travel. Heat began to intensify, and the room was starting to become engulfed in it. Edward stepped on the glass on the ground as Dani groaned in pain and on instinct, Maura crouched down to examine. But, as she reached out, her hand went through Dani cleanly as if she was made of air.
"Only shadows of a memory," Hyde reminded.
"Look at you," she heard, prompting Maura to turn her head. Edward Hyde stood over them with a menacing look, drawing his sword from his cane. He kicked Dani in stomach, making her flip over onto her back. Small cuts were on her face as she breathed heavily as Edward continued, "So this is how it ends for you," his foot stepped on her chest and the sword being pushed slowly into her shoulder. Dani cried in pain as Edward continued, "A young woman living a life of vile debauchery and you know, your beloved Lily," he leaned down and whispered, "She enjoyed having me as a lover more than you."
Maura felt her heart clenched, remembering how Dani wrote it in her journal. It was still hard to comprehend for the doctor. The betrayal and hurt showed in Dani's eyes but, Maura recognized an emotion she hadn't seen before: fear.
"So, what do we do with her," Korsak asked.
Regina shrugged, "She doesn't want to answer about why Dorian paid with the pages."
"Are they that valuable," Frankie asked in amazement.
Regina nodded. "They have value because it can give unlimited, unrestrained power to a powerful magical being."
"But why damage it? It's basically a Grimoire," Adam questioned.
Frankie gave a confused expression and looked at Frost. "What," he muttered.
Frost rolled his eyes, "It's a dark magic book, bro."
"How do you know that?"
"I read," Frost answered.
"Eleanor wants power most likely," Regina suggested.
Korsak nodded in agreement, "But, we have the bounty on our heads. They want us dead or alive and the formula."
"Dorian wants Dani alive. Without the location, who knows what they are doing."
"But what are they doing," Adam questioned aloud. "They took valuable artifacts and valuable paperwork. The translation for the Book of the Dead is gone now. They kidnapped Mina and Mephistopheles is attempting to cut his deal."
"Hopefully, Maura and Hyde find something in Dani's mind. Jane's monitoring so we might get something."
"Regina," the group turned to see Nina jogging into the room, "you need to come back…something is happening…to Maura and Dani."
Regina passed the papers to Frankie, rushing away with Nina. "Frankie, Frost, watch her," Korsak commanded the two detectives. He jogged through the door and rushed upstairs, leaving Frankie and Frost with the mute Eleanor.
Edward twisted the sword in Dani's shoulder before pulling it back completely. Dani cried in pain, breathing heavily and tried to grab at Edward. "Pathetic," Edward mumbled,
"You'll burn down with this place."
"NO!"
Despite not hearing Maura, Dani's apparition reacted. She leaned over and reached a shard of glass from the broken beaker. With all the force in her body, she stabbed Edward in the calf causing him to cry out in pain. He turned back toward Dani and grabbed her by her shirt, lifting her up.
"That was foolish," Edward hissed.
"No. This is," Dani retorted before head butting Edward in the face. With the impact, pain began to course through her body fueled by the anger and hate that was already building up; that is when it happened.
Dani dropped onto one knee with her hands on her head as she began to cry out in pain. Edward, still feeling stunned, was able to shake off the pain to see Dani holding her head. "Weak," he muttered as he grabbed her once more, but Dani lifted her head up to reveal the dark red eyes.
"What the-"
"Hello brother." With a quick knee into his abdomen, Edward dropped to the ground then Hyde grabbed the table beside them and slammed it over Edward's head with great strength. Edward, however, was not deterred and drew out his cane sword. He swung and Dani's other half ducked, hearing the strike hit wood. Edward attempted to pull his sword out but was tackled to the ground.
Hyde tried to stay on top of Edward and he was bigger than them. They knew that they were also running on borrow time with their new found control of Dani's body. They lifted a fist and punched him in the face, the action repeated twice until they were flipped over with hands clutching at their neck. Edward tightened his grip, trying his best to end the fight and be done with his new counterpart. Hyde tried to clutch onto the arm but, it was pointless for Edward was stronger.
The red eyes blinked to the familiar brown eyes that Maura knew. "Henry," she called.
Edward smirked, "That won't work, I have total control of your brother."
"Henry...come...back...please-"
The grip released with Dani reaching at her neck, coughing loudly. "Dani...go," she looked up to see Henry holding his arms in the air, shaking ferociously.
"Henry, no."
"I cannot hold this monster off any longer," he roared before his hands dropped in agonizing pain and the large beam dropped on top of him.
"Dani," Maura whispered, watching as the apparition looked away from her brother. Dani then touched her forehead, groaning in pain as she blinked with the red eyes returning. With Hyde once more in control, they began to move forward away from crouched figure.
Out of the corner of their eye, they noticed an open book.
"Come on, Maura," Jane shouted into the portal.
There was no sign or reaction but the heart rate monitors were continuing to go off as if one of them could have a heart attack. However, it was evident that Dani was suffering from it as her body convulsed sharply and almost fell off the sofa that she was on. Jane held her up as one eye opened to show red and other being brown and there was a deep gasp before Dani's body went limp and there was a flatline.
"Shit," Jane hissed as she placed Dani on the floor and began to do CPR. Her eyes darted up to look at Maura whose pulse was still steady. "Come on. Beat."
"Jane," Regina called out as she rushed into the room.
"Her heart just stopped!"'
"If we can't revive her, Maura will be sealed in!"
Maura glanced at the book, rushing over to look at it. Henry Jekyll's journal was a simple dark brown leather book; inside, she could see notations with unfamiliar chemical symbols. "Did you know what this was in that moment," Maura inquired.
The current Hyde watched as their past self-rushed toward the notebook. They shrugged, "I'm not sure. I barely remember anything and seeing this…"
Quickly, they reached for the item, knocking away any ashes that were starting to smudge the writing. The house was starting to creek; the room was start to fill with smoke with certain chemicals getting ready to combust. The flames were spreading, leaving Hyde looking for the laboratory door. "Got to keep moving," Hyde coughed, tucking the small book into their shirt.
"We have to go back for him," Dani's voice echoed suddenly. Maura looked around to see if Dani was standing next to them but instead, the illusion reacted instead.
"He's a dead man walking," Hyde grunted.
"He's all we have left," Dani's voice thundered.
Hyde growled, forcing their body to trudge forward but the movements seemed to not to compute. Instead, Dani's body turned sharply with Hyde gritting their teeth and struggling to get control back. But as they moved, Hyde's teeth gritted, feeling like a million needles were poking and prodding at once. Eventually, they dropped onto their knees and their back curled with a low groan escaping. In that short moment, Dani gasped and grabbed the railing to push themselves up.
Maura watched the struggle as Dani would stop and restart her movements with bare feet touching the hot, burning floor. She soon reached Henry.
This place will collapse any moment, Maura thought. She wasn't sure how Dani was able to escape but as she watched on with Hyde. She pondered if they would escape at all. the beam off her brother, grabbing him. Trying to carry his weight, Maura was amazed to see that Dani somehow made it out of the family home, covered in ash and burns. She could hear the whistles of police and fire carriages approaching, prompting her to lift her brother once more. "Leave me," he muttered.
"No, we are in this together."
Maura watched as Henry's hand began to wander away. Immediately, she noticed that he grabbed a piece of wood on the ground. "Henry, don't," Maura shouted; her voice echoing on deaf ears.
Suddenly, there was a loud gasp.
Dani raised her right hand; the fingers trembled as dark red blood. There was a small thud beside her and she watched as her brother's saber rolled away covered in blood, making a heavy feeling drop to her stomach. Henry's face shadowed a smile, "Good catch."
"No, Henry," Dani scrambled, placing her hands on the wound.
"It's okay," he mumbled, pushing her hands away. She continued to fret until he grabbed both of her hands. "Danielle, stop."
"You are not going to leave me," Dani urged; tears were starting to run down cheeks.
Henry raised his hand weakly, placing it on her heart. She placed her hands over his. "You have to... be strong," he mumbled.
"Henry-"
"Be...better than...I." Before Dani could argue back, Henry's grip on her hand loosened. Eyes focused on the hand for moment then moved toward the ground to see eyes looking away with a blank stare.
"No..." Dani's body scrambled to her brother's side, placing her head on his chest. "Don't do this."
Suddenly, the world stilled in front of Maura. Movement was gone from the flames of the building; Dani's expression was frozen with pain. With hands gripping on her brother's body, Dani lifted gently and brought his body into her lap, closing his eyes then she kissed his forehead.
Maura bowed her head then looked at Hyde who was looking away. The memory froze instantly and suddenly, the flames were gone and Henry's body was not in Dani's arms. Instead, Dani was covered in dark mud and blood from her feet to her face; the approaching storm that was coming arrived in full force. The shovel was tossed aside with her walking away from her brother's grave site, pulling out the leather-bound journal.
"Where did you put it, Dani," Maura implored. The memory faded and Hyde grimaced, prompting the blonde to walk over quickly. "Are you okay?"
Hyde shook their head. "My head is starting to pound heavily right now," they informed. Their strong stature started to crumple and they started to fall forward. Noticing this, Maura grabbed them by their arm to balance them.
"Lean against the wall," she ordered. Hyde leaned against the wall; they attempted to take in a deep breath but coughed loudly as if gagging. "Easy Hyde, try to relax," Maura calmed. Hyde nodded and slowly slid along the wall to sit on their bottom. As Hyde tried to regain their composure, Maura noticed that they were no longer in front of burnt manor but, sitting in a room with Dani and another man.
"Maura!"
The doctor looked around then noticed that Jane was on the floor with panic. "Jane," Maura reached out but her hand faded into the vision. She then glanced back to see the room was no longer there and what remained was Dani sitting in the chair at a bar top. She looked completely disheveled with bags under her eyes, hair in a ponytail that was falling apart, and mud covered clothes; the same clothes she wore when she buried Henry. On the bar top was a large bottle with brown substance that was also in Dano's glass and in her other hand was a pocket watch. She checked it then closed it before pulling out the journal from inside her coat.
Maura then heard footsteps. She turned around to see no one there but Dani turned her head and gave an annoyed expression, "You are late, Robert..."
"You're drunk," a man's voice pointed out.
Dani sneered, "Pointing out the obvious." She lifted the glass in her hand, taking a large sip before waving the journal in the air. "It appears that I have...caught...your interest...of the great Mister Stevenson."
"It was indeed enticing."
Robert Louis Stevenson, Maura realized. "She's giving him the journal."
Dani's hand shot to her forehead. "Fuck," she cussed then back slammed another shot.
A smell hit Maura suddenly; woody, thick, and almost burning. "Whiskey," Maura deducted.
"That's why I feel…like shit," Hyde muttered. "Haven't drank that heavy in a while."
"Should you even be feeling it," Maura inquired.
"I didn't think-" Hyde let out a large hiccup and groaned, "that I would."
"I'm still not sure why you want to give this to me," Stevenson stated. "Let alone give me a canvas with an unknown lady."
"A canvas," Maura said to herself.
"I just want it gone and I figured that you might want a new story."
"But why me?"
"Because you need a new hit and I want to disappear. You pay the price I want and you get all the credit."
"All?"
Dani lifted her glass with a sad smirk, "All as long as you make sure that all know that this is fiction. Henry Jekyll never existed in reality."
Suddenly, Hyde gripped Maura's hand and the vision disappeared. "Something is happening," Hyde informed her wearily.
"What's wrong?"
Hyde pulled themselves up from the ground. They grabbed their forehead once more and looked around, anxiously. "Someone's trying to break through the spell," Hyde muttered.
"Are you sure?"
"Maura," the doctor heard once more. However, it was louder and more urgent. "Maura, you need to wake up now!"
"Why did you do this?!" Maura covered her ears and watched as Hyde dropped to the ground with a thud. Dani's voice shouted, "To live forever? To torture us? What is there to gain?"
"Nothing," Hyde muttered.
"Pathetic," a new voice echoed, prompting Maura to stand up and step in front of Hyde.
"Leave them alone," Maura defended.
"You think you can stop me, mortal," the voice yelled causing Maura to cover her ears. The floor shook and Maura grabbed Hyde's arm, lifting them up. "You can't escape me."
Suddenly, Maura was lifted from the ground, clenching at her throat.
"Regina!" Jane watched as Maura's pulse began to fluctuate quickly. Regina looked away from Dani and rushed over to Maura to notice a handprint was forming around her throat. "What's happening," Jane questioned.
Adam crouched down next to Dani and lifted her eye lid to see a new shade of almost greenish black. "That's dark magic," he pointed out. Without any other words, he stood up prompting Jane to stand up as well and follow him as he left the room.
RI
Maura tried to fight the hand at her throat. "Let…her go," Hyde coughed.
The witch waved her hand, sending Hyde into a distance. "Now, tell me where the formula is," she questioned.
Maura glared, "I won't…tell…you."
"Then you died," Eleanor squeezed once more.
"Get out of our head," Hyde screamed, charging at the witch.
RI
"I thought you had that witch secured," Jane questioned.
"We did but we may have underestimated her powers." They reached the basement door, opening the door to see Frankie and Frost were against the wall, both knocked out.
"Frankie," Jane shouted, about to run in. Adam pulled Jane back quickly. "What are you doing?"
"We cannot just jump in there with a witch being nuts."
"Then what do we do?"
Adam peered inside, trying to get visual. Based on his observation, he could see Eleanor focusing straight at the one-way mirror with a large smirk. He lowered himself to the ground, "I'm going to tackle her and you retrieve Frankie and Barry."
The creature began to commando crawl toward the door. Jane crouched, trying to avoid the one-way mirror, moving closer toward her brother and partner. As soon as they were close enough, Jane looked at Adam who locked eyes with her. He gave the nod to Jane and she reached, grabbing her brother's hand, "Frankie…. Frost, wake up."
Frankie groaned, "Jane…look."
"You're mine," she heard then a loud thud.
"Hell no," Adam snapped.
Jane let out a sigh of relief as she grabbed Frankie while Adam popped out with Eleanor who was struggling and now wearing a ripped piece of Adam's shirt sleeve over her eyes. "Her eyes were glowing," Adam informed. "How are Frankie and Frost?"
"Concussed, I think." Eleanor shuddered suddenly as her head lolled back then snapped down with a thud to the floor. "What the hell?"
"Jane," Nina shouted, "Regina needs you!"
Jane looked over at Adam. "I got it," he reassured as she sprinted back up the stairs.
Upon entering the room, Maura's pulse was normal and the handprint was no longer there. In addition, Dani's heartbeat had calm as well. Regina gestured to Maura, "We are going to bring them out of it."
"Ok."
Maura touched her neck as Hyde crashed into the witch. But upon standing back up, the witch was no longer with them, prompting Hyde to pace in anger. The white room then began to reshape and once again, they were back in the alley. Maura took in a deep breath, attempting to collect herself then looked over at Hyde; they were looking worn out and it seemed that exhaustion was taking over. Maura began to walk to the bench by her until she felt her knees buckle. Her body was about to fall forward until she felt Hyde support her body. "You're okay," Hyde reassured.
They sat Maura down then took a seat next to her. "Thank you," Maura said.
Hyde didn't respond but gave a small nod.
Usually, Maura understood this as a mark to leave the individual alone. But, as she continued to observe Hyde, she sensed that she needed to lean over and take Hyde's hand. They weren't like Jane's; there was no scar along soft, somewhat calloused hands. Instead, Hyde's hand twitched at the touch before it calmed under Maura's touch. "You are good, you know," Maura stated.
"I guess," Hyde shrugged. "Still forced immortality on myself and Danielle."
"Why did you want immortality?"
Hyde opened their mouth, trying to voice their answer then closed it. "I…was angry…frustrated…alone," Hyde said finally. "The only person I could affect was right here."
"Maura, wake up please."
The room was bright when she opened her eyes. Maura gasped for air as a sigh of relief was heard. Jane held her girlfriend in your arms as Maura was trying to gather her surroundings. "I got you," Jane whispered against Maura's head. "You're okay. You're safe."
"Dani," Maura muttered.
Jane glanced over and Maura looked over Jane's shoulder to see Dani's heart beat slow on the monitor. Her eyes opened slowly then blinked, trying to get a sense of what was happening. Dani then reached hand out to Regina. "I'm right here," Regina told her as she took hold of Dani's hand.
Dani gave a small nod then leaned back, closing her eyes from exhaustion.
"Jane," the detective looked back at Maura who rested her head against Jane's shoulder. "I know where the journal is."
