Chapter 20: Hidden Tunnels

"Bianca Sanfino! Put the baby down and put your hands up! Now!"

Eddie's blood ran cold, and she dropped her fork onto her plate when she heard Megan screaming from their bedroom. Throwing her napkin on the table, she pushed her chair back and got to her feet. Her heart hammering in her chest, she got to her feet and grabbed for Jamie's hand pulling him up. The couple carefully made their way towards their temporary bedroom and saw several other officers with their guns drawn. Eddie could hear Megan screaming from inside the bedroom. Jamie and Eddie both kept their hands on their guns. Shooting a look to Eddie, Jamie held up a hand towards her.

"I can try and reason with her."

Eddie shook her head, getting a horrified look on her face.

"Jamie. No. She could actually kill you this time. I can take her."

Jamie took his hand off his gun and put both his hands up in front of him.

"I can reason with her babe. It'll be ok."

The pit on Eddie's stomach grew as Jamie cautiously stepped around the corner, his hands in front of him, making a show of peace.

"Bianca. Hey. Please just put the baby down. Let's talk."

Bianca looked at Jamie wide eyed.

"You killed my brother Jimmy! I thought I lost my baby because of you! But it turns out, you had her. This whole time!"

Jamie although on the inside was absolutely terrified about what would happen to his baby girl.

"I'm sorry about your brother Bianca, but I didn't kill him. As for your baby, I'm very sorry that happened to you. But that baby in your arms isn't your daughter. She belongs to my wife and I, and her name is Megan."

Bianca kept shaking her head and tried rocking a still screaming Megan.

"Shh, it's ok baby girl. Mommy's got you."

Something sparked a thought in his mind, Joe had seen the woman who'd taken Megan. But what was Bianca's connection to all this? Jamie keeping his hands in front of him, tried again to reason with her.

"Please Bianca, just put the baby down. No one is going to hurt you here. Ok?"

Jamie was buying time, then he thought quick on his feet, he grabbed for Megan and crouched down on the floor, covering her. Eddie came into the room and Bianca pulled a knife from her pocket, lunging at her. Eddie shouted at her.

"Don't move!"

Eddie aimed her gun and shot twice. Bianca landed like a sack of potatoes on the floor. She kept talking, but Eddie was tuning her out.

"You don't understand…"

A few officers cuffed Bianca and some EMT's arrived. They quickly took her away, and Eddie leaned down in front of Jamie. Megan was still crying. At least she wasn't screaming anymore. Jamie sat down on the floor and shifted Megan in his arms. Eddie ran a hand over Megan's tiny head, and she seemed to calm. She looked Jamie in the eye and then back down at Megan.

"Is she ok?"

Jamie nodded and kissed the crown of Megan's forehead.

"She's fine. Not a scratch on her."

The couple pressed their foreheads together. But no sooner had they, An officer's voice sounded from the basement.

"Commissioner! Sir! You'd better come see this!"

Jamie and Eddie broke apart and got to their feet. The whole family had piled downstairs and was looking at several officers who had their flashlights pointed at an opening in the far corner next to the side entrance to the basement.

"We found this hidden tunnel. It was boarded up. Did you know about this sir?"

All eyes turned to Frank. He responded.

"I didn't even know that was there. Pop? Did you know this was here?"

Henry looked just as surprised as the rest of the family.

"A bootleggers tunnel. Some of the houses around here have them. But I had no idea this one had it to. I'll have to look into some of the old floor plans of this house."

The rest of the family stood with their mouths open. But it was Danny who spoke first.

"Does anyone know where exactly the deep dark tunnel leads?"

Henry and Frank shook their heads no. Then it was Frank who spoke next.

"Well in any case, I think we should seal this up the right way. With cement instead of just plywood."

Everything was finally getting back to normal. It wasn't until a few weeks later that Danny and Joe brought Jamie and Eddie an envelope with information for them. Danny had them sit at the dining room table.

"This is for you and Eddie kid."

Jamie carefully opened the envelope and pulled out a still from the surveillance video and a photo of Bianca.

"You're saying that…"

Danny nodded, but Joe spoke up.

"The woman that kidnapped Megan was Bianca Sanfino."

Eddie's face paled and she shook her head.

"So, this whole time she's had it in for me."

Joe continued his conversation.

"Yes. She had a daughter. Just hours before she took Megan. But her daughter passed away from complications."

Jamie looked Joe in the eye.

"So, losing her brother just pushed her towards her breaking point and then she loses her daughter, and she goes over."

Joe nodded.

"It's still no excuse to try and take out two NYPD officers."

Jamie nodded quietly and looked down at the sleeping baby in Eddie's arms. They did everything for her. Their baby girl. She was now safe.
