Bonfire Tradition

18 July 2007

Evans and Reggie raced out of the beach house and leapt from the porch to the yard, skipping the steps completely. The nine- and five-year-old boys ran around Nana, Pop, their uncles and a few guests, (who levitated ice chests) to continue their race toward the beach.

"It's the Cardiff Runespoors! The terror of the Quidditch pitch!" shouted Stan. "Run! Fly! Apparate away!"

"You can't catch us!" Evans shouted as he led the way along the path to the dunes and down to the beach. He turned back to stick his tongue out at his uncle who grinned and made a face.

"My turn! It's my turn to start the bonfire tonight!" Reggie shouted to remind his older brother.

The brothers ran along the beach to the spot where Uncle Sirius gathered driftwood and cast spells to make certain the wood was dry enough to burn naturally. Missy Graves wagged her tail at the two boys but didn't get up to run around with them. Her age slowed her down, but veterinarian potions kept her healthy.

"There's a couple big pieces over there I left for you to bring up," Sirius told the two, pointing. The two boys shouted and hurried to drag the limbs back to the pit dug in the sand. (Dobby and other elves made certain there was plenty of driftwood on the beach on the night of the bonfire).

The tradition of a weekly supper around a bonfire on the beach had begun the first time Harry brought Evans to visit Sirius in Paradise. The one-year-old stared at all the new things and once he warmed up to the stranger with the beard, he went to the arms of 'Paddy' as willingly as Dada.

The marauder was captivated by the toddler and spent the month-long visit spoiling the little boy with conjured toys, flying him around on his shoulders or in his arms, and making up stories about his adventures at Hogwarts. The small child hadn't understood all the words of course but Dada laughed so Evans laughed. And Missy Graves spent most of the day licking the toddler's face (despite Winky, Dobby, and Kreacher wiping his face every time).

When Evans was two, 'Tracy' came with Dada and him for the visit. Sirius and Missy Graves entertained the little boy while Dada and Tracy got time by themselves. By the next summer, when he was three, Evan spent as much time in his mummy's arms as he did his dad's. Then when Evans was four, the family arrived at the island with a baby.

Sirius had listened intently to Evan's complaints about the baby getting all the attention from Dad and Mum. The marauder agreed completely but then distracted the boy's complaints by providing a child's broom to fly around on the beach. (It was limited to a radius of four metres and only one-half metre above the sand). Dad's magical roar when he saw Evans on the broom had been frightening. But then Evans laughed while watching Dad chase Sirius around throwing hexes at him along the beach for an hour after they got caught. That was the first time Evans saw Uncle Sirius turn into a giant dog and race faster than Missy Graves along the beach to get away from Dad's hexes.

While they waited for the others to arrive, Sirius asked about the babies.

"Poopsie and Tinkle are fine," complained Evans.

Sirus snorted when he heard the nicknames and asked, "Why do you call the twins Poopsie and Tinkle?"

Reggie answered, "Cause Lily poops all the time, and it stinks."

"And Phineas tinkles on Mum and Dad when they change his nappy," Evan explained.

Sirius laughed, "He hits Mum and Dad, huh?"

"Winky fusses at them for not using common sense. She yells at them to throw a towel over his wee-wee when they change him," Evans explained.

"And Kreacher laughs at them," Reggie added. "He says that Evans and me both did the same."

The Davis family arrived then; they'd walked along the path and enjoyed the pleasant evening. Nana asked how soon Mum and Dad would join them and Evans replied, "They're dealing with Poopsie and Tinkle."

Pops and their uncles laughed, while Nana snorted before correcting her eldest grandson, "Lily and Phineas."

Mimicking the house elves, Evans replied, "That be what Evans saying, Poopsie and Tinkle."

When Harry and Tracy arrived with the two infants, they were followed by baby carriers, diaper bags, and extra blankets to spread out on the sand. (A coven of house elves carried everything).

Seeing the parade of equipment spread across the beach, Micheal Davis leaned over and kissed his wife. He muttered, "You are the most amazing witch! You did all this without an army of house elves."

"I figured out by the time Tracy was six months that the diaper bag is all that's needed. Tracy and Harry don't believe that, because the elves provide everything. And remember, we never went anywhere until they were all toilet trained!" she reminded her husband.

With everyone assembled on the beach, Reggie reminded everyone, "I get to start the bonfire! Dad! It's my turn to start the bonfire!"

"Yes, Regulus," Harry replied as he handed Lily to his father-in-law who took the infant carefully. "Evans started the fire last week and tonight is your turn."

"Can he do it at five?" asked Nick.

"Yeah, my boys are going to be strong wizards," Harry said with pride in his voice as he crouched down beside the small boy on the sand and drew out his wand.

He asked the little boy, "Regulus Micheal Potter-Black, what's the first rule of using a wand?"

"Never point it at a person, elf, or animal."

"That's right," Harry said handing his magic wand to his second son. He guided Reggie's hand down toward the sand and then turned him toward the pile of wood.

"Now the incantation is Incendio, and we dip the wand down and up before flicking it forward."

"I can do it!" declared the little boy with confidence. Harry Potter blinked to keep tears of happiness from flowing from his eyes. His children were safe and happy. They knew they were loved by their family.

"I believe you, Reggie."

The little boy smiled and cast the spell with Dad holding him safe in his arms. The fire ignited to cheers from everyone gathered around the beach.

THE END

Wait! What About…
Weasleys

Arthur Weasley eventually found work as a clerk pushing paper in the tax office of the Inland Revenue (Magical Division) based in Birmingham. His skill proved to be in deciphering and tracking names of magical persons who tried to hide their wealth behind new identities as the laws of Reformed Magical Britain took hold.

Molly was never satisfied with the new government because the officials never erected any statues to honour Albus Dumbledore. Another reason may have been that her children accepted it completely and participated in the new institutions and culture while ignoring her wishes.

BREAK &&*

Bill Weasley emigrated to Australia where he married a first-generation witch and worked as successful prospector for gems and gold through Gringotts Sydney. The couple had six children – three girls and three boys.

Charlie Weasley returned to the United Kingdom to head up the newly organized Dragon Preserve that stretched from the islands west and north of Scotland to Iceland and Norway. He rose to the position of director, but Molly never mentioned her second son. (Charlie had married a pureblood wizard from Norway and was banished from his mother's mind. Even when Charlie or his husband received accolades from the ICW for bringing three breeds of dragons back from the brink of extinction, Molly refused to attend the awards ceremony with her husband.)

Percy Weasley attended university and worked two jobs with the Reformed Magical Government to pay tuition. He tried living with his parents again, but his mother's tantrums prevented him from studying and sleeping. Fred and George provided their next older brother with an apartment above their store where he could study, sleep and entertain Penny Clearwater when she wasn't studying and working. Percy was proficient with the male contraceptive charm, so he and Penny waited until after graduation to marry. He went to work in the government and helped coordinate matters between the Reformed Ministry and 10 Downing Street for many years. Penny worked in finance along side Fleur Delacour to coordinate the flow of wealth back and forth between Gringotts and the various banks in the United Kingdom. The couple had four children – three girls and one boy.

Fred and George Weasley fathered eight children in their marriages to sister witches from Italy. Their joke shops spread across the world, and no one ever realized each store was a front for MI5.5 and the ICW keeping tabs on magical society everywhere.

Ronald Weasley squeaked by his OWLS with three Acceptable. He never returned for tutoring or cracked another textbook in his life. He found that he loved cooking and took a series of jobs working in the kitchens at Quidditch pitches. However, these jobs meant he never got to watch the games – fans ate prodigious amounts of food at each match. So he moved over to work in the commissary at the Reformed Ministry for Magic and proved to be an excellent cook. This job gave him access to Quidditch tickets and ample time to attend the matches across the British Isles. He never married, but learned the male contraceptive charm well enough that his many conquests among the witches didn't fall pregnant.

Ginevra Weasley was lost for a time that first summer of the reformation. She worried about missing her fifth year at Hogwarts and appeared content to sit at the Burrow. An intervention by the Patil sisters and of all people, Lavender Brown, got Ginny off her duff and into the free tutoring the Royal Reformation offered. Eventually, she studied charms and became a charms mistress. Ginny married Ernie McMillian and had two sons.

Others

The island called Paradise became the permanent home of Sirius Black. The wizard and his pet dog Missy Graves enjoyed the beach, shade, and temperatures of the tropical island. Various witches hung around because they enjoyed Black's company and the pace of life. Once life settled down in Reformed Magical Britain, Harry began travelling to Paradise for a month each summer to relax and hide from bankers, goblins, and politicians who rose up.

Fleur Delacour enjoyed working at Gringotts and eventually became the liaison for the London offices with four other European branches as the figures in Euros grew larger and larger. She married an Italian wizard and had three daughters.

Susan Bones left Britain for three years to attend school in MACUSA. Her guardian Mrs Abbott was reluctant to agree to this plan at first, but Susan argued to get away from Britain. Her estate might recover under the new Gringotts' financial plans but the death of her aunt in prison in September proved too much. Enrolled at Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, she became just another student. After graduation she attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Magical) to study Arithmancy. She married an architect from California who designed skyscrapers that included magical sections for major cities around the world. She remained in touch with Mrs Abbott and Hannah but seldom returned to England during her adult life.

BREAK &&*

Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott reconciled as friends that first summer, but she refused to date him until after they both graduated from Reformed Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1998. She went to university, and he invested his time, energies, and magic into expanding the Longbottom Greenhouse businesses. They married in 2000 and everyone was surprised when Hannah devoted herself to a partnership with Neville to grow potion ingredients, herbs and other plants. They had a large family of eight children who all attended Hogwarts.

Minerva McGonagall lived in a women's prison until she passed away in her sleep in 2015. She was 108 years old. At no time during her incarceration did the witch ever express remorse for her actions.

The legacy of Albus Dumbledore was for memories of his accomplishments to fade into history. Entries discussing the man's contributions to magic always included his defeat of Gellert Grindelwald but revelations of the secret relationship of the two men made thoughtful persons question why Albus waited so long to confront the mad genius who almost destroyed the Statute of Secrecy. His years as headmaster at Hogwarts became known as one of decay and failing standards. His portrait only appeared in the headmistress' office after 2043, and it never awakened when anyone living was present.
